The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Welcome To The New Mudflats!

welcome.jpg

Welcome, and behold the new and improved Mudflats! You’ll noticed that the name has changed to “The Mudflats”, but otherwise, things should look pretty familiar.

  • The old Mudflats site will remain where it is, with archived comments, if you need to refer to them. Copies of the older posts themselves will migrate over here bit by bit as I have time to copy and paste them.

And finally, a big huge THANK YOU to my wonderful, generous, brilliant tech guru and fellow Mudpuppy Snoskred and her trusty sidekick Sephyroth! They are the ones responsible for the look and functionality of this new blog, and for setting up the forums. If you haven’t heard from her at Mudflats recently, it’s been because she’s been working long hours for days on end to get this place up and running. So everyone, please, a huge, 6-continent round of applause for Snoskred and the rest of her team!

And as a congratulations for making the leap over the mud puddle to land in our new space, check out the Fun links over on the right. Hopefully they will provide you with a few relaxing moments of Zen between now and the election, or whenever this whole crazy political mud bath becomes just too much.

Greetings, muddies. Another hot day here in McCain’s home state. Sure would be nice to turn his place blue on 11/4. I guess I could just hold my breath till I TURN blue, or maybe drown myself in blue magaritas.

Just saw on HuffPo that McClairvoyant already has an ad stating that he won the debate. You know? The debate? The one he wasn’t planning to attend? Seems the ad was posted this morning before he made the big announcement that the show will go on.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

Here’s a more readable repost of a previous message — a preview of an article to appear in a major daily newspaper, based on the reporter’s query:

“Psychologically (NOT politically) speaking: What makes Sarah Palin such a polarizing figure? How is it that she hooks into people (especially women) so strongly? Does she show signs of having borderline personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder? Is that why women have such a strong emotional response to her?

“I would particularly like to hear from therapists whose female clients have been discussing Palin in their therapy. Also, do you have clients who are strong Obama supporters while their husbands are for McCain-Palin? How is that affecting their marriage?”

And, there’s an op-ed by Dorothy Samuels in the NY Times today re: Palin and charging victims for rape kits when she was mayor in Wasilla.

    Watch the unraveling…

(And of course most of the Russians are unconcerned about their proximity to Alaska. Most of the Russians live on the other side of the continent – although I find it curious that an even closer proximity to Canada doesn’t count more than seeing a remote Russian island from a remote Alaskan island does!)

I’m reposting to this other thread:

Not sure which thread we’ll get back to discussion about the debates and financial crisis on here yet – but I had to share what I just read in my paper that really alarms me.

The University of Illinois sent a memo to its employees last week telling them they can’t wear or distribute anything on campus that supports a particular candidate or party! U of I President Joseph White says the memo was intended to remind employees not to, as he put it, use school resources for politics.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? No buttons, tees, bumper stickers? I can’t believe this on a major university campus, in Obama’s home state. What college campus doesn’t have political discussion and identities present? It wouldn’t be a institution of higher learning if it didn’t.

I’m used to hearing about nearby Wheaton College firing faculty for drinking (in the privacy of their own homes) or for getting a divorce. But U of I – not even a campaign button? YIKES

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

“”" Palin was in New York City Thursday.
(CNN) – Prominent conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is “out of her league” and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party.

The criticism in Parker’s Friday column is the latest in a recent string of negative assessments toward the McCain-Palin candidacy from prominent conservatives. ….. “”"”

    @Bec,
Four years ago, the University of Rochester sent a similar email to employees re: political activities. I don’t remember all the details, but as I recall, the thrust of the email r/t university “resources” – not buttons or bumper stickers. The concern was that if the University was seen as political or partisan, by allowing its resources (such as its email system) to be used for political activity, it could affect its nonprofit status and funding. Certainly, nothing/no one stopped us from talking (crying, commiserating) with co-workers about the election!

Wish all the moves I made were this easy! Where do you want me to put this big plant? I thought it’d be nice for you to have something green to look at during those loooong snowy days.

Can I have the corner room upstairs? Love the view!

Not only is the Cafferty File good — some of the comments are EXCELLENT!

“One thing she has educated me on is the definition of foreign policy………….. just think how well qualified all of Americais with all of the foreign people flying over us all the time. i am laughing my self silly at McCain Insane pick for VP.”

“Only if an intelligent life forms takes up residence in her body”

“she is qualified to be the President of Russia. Russia is closer to Alaska (and you can see from there to boot) than the lower 48 states that most of us live in.”

Just a few of the over 400 comments — may have to bookmark so I can have a good laugh before bed tonight

I really like the ability to edit your post for 10 minutes. I can’t count the number of times I have hit the submit button and gone “oh $hit, I goofed”. Thanks for the ability to un-goof!

Congrats AKM and many thanks to Snoskred and Sephyroth. This is the only blog I visit. Well, it’s more than visiting. I live here. The links other posters provide keep me up to speed on what others are saying, so thanks to the other posters too.

I’m a little bummed that when I put my cursor over a link, I can’t preview it anymore, but I can live with that.

“The University of Illinois sent a memo to its employees last week telling them they can’t wear or distribute anything on campus that supports a particular candidate or party! U of I President Joseph White says the memo was intended to remind employees not to, as he put it, use school resources for politics.”

It actually makes sense to me. If I were a student, or if my kid was at college, I wouldn’t want them influenced by school employees. Too intimidating an atmosphere. As long as students aren’t silenced, I’m OK with that.

Who knew? Thank you for the Vermont information. My mother graduated from Middlebury, and my father gave the bacculauleate sermon in the chapel there many years ago. Just a wonderful memory to hear from you re: names. My cousin and aunt live there now, and I have a bumber sticker for Leahy which I cherish.

    Congratulations on the new digs!

I will have to look around later tonight, but I have a quick question,

Can anyone direct me to a site where they list the organizations that endorse the candidates? I looked on Obama and McCain’s sites, yet could not find a list of the different organizations that have come out and given endorsements.

    Thanks!

    Again….congratulations!

This is by far the best site on the web and it keeps getting better and better.
I only wish I had time to read everything. I work, come home, and sit here reading for hours and still…I can’t made a dent.

I look forward to watching The (new) Mudflats website evolve into even bigger & better things in the future. Yes, I plan on hanging around here long after November’s election is nothing but a bunch of “Saturday Night Live” skits that my grandchildren will view one day and ask, “Did the Republican Party mess up that badly during the 2008 election season?” ;-)

    Congrats on the new site!

A donation worth every penny to not have to read vile troll comments. I really needed a place to visit that is up-to-date with what’s going on as well as “friendly!” Thanks for leaving the light on for the rest of country – heck – make that world:) I’m all fired up for the debate. So as my co-worker said, let’s break out the Crystal Lite and microwave popcorn, it’s Hammer Time!

An artifact of my failing senior brain — I’m at a different computer, and just tried to go to “www.themudflats.com”. This turns out to be a bar and grill in Ohio. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Maybe you (sysadmin) could arrange reciprocal “if you were looking for the other Mudflats..” blurbs on the home pages??

Heck, maybe we can draw them in and convert at least a piece of Ohio to AK Mudthinking.
