Bedtime in Alaska – Open Thread

What a day!  Before I pour myself into bed, I thought I’d share some great videos from today’s rally.  Enjoy!  And thanks to all the Mudflatters who were there today, and all those who were there in spirit!

Good slideshow of the Alaskans for Truth Rally.

Shannyn Moore speaks at the rally.

I don’t know who did this, but it’s great. “Sarah the Knife” musical montage.

Every 15 mins stopping to cosmically send some positive energy to my brethren in Alaska.

Sending out as many press releases about the rally to media connections all week by us has worked. People are getting it; All Alaskans are not blindly supportive of Sarah Palin.

    When people try to give me the executive experience line I now say;

    a. Four years as POTUS didn’t help Bush the second term.
    b. Took her less than two to get investigated for ethics and abuse of power.
    c. What kind of experience does she have when she hasn’t had to balance a budget deficit and with a surplus has been reticent to tackle the REAL issues of Alaskans? I’ll give you a week for your answer.
    d. How many times have you met a Lady who seemed to have it all together and you thought that she MAY be the one and then when the spell wore off and you paid attention you found that you were in bed with a total nut case?

OK on another note late last night I turned from political talk to watch Chris Rock, Boxing and 30 Days of Night.

In the story a small Northern off road Alaskan town was taken over by vampires during 30 straight days of nightime. It reminded me of the fragility of the small towns way up north that are off the road system and I wondered are they really ignored for weeks while they sit in darkness?

My life and attitude about Alaska has been changed forever… I was the Black lady who didn’t get off the ship for long because I felt an energy of unwelcomeness that my white traveling companions also picked up on.
I have now pre-booked two trips by air with open dates and await feedback from ALASKANS when I should take my two 5 day trips over the next few months. ( Is the Anchoage Sheraton nice digs?)

Waiting for input: It would be great if next trip can be during an Anti-Palin rally pre- election and the other when she is being impeached.

    OFF TOPIC:
I just read @ TalkingPointsmemo .com that the McCain people are talking about the “benefit” of having Bristol & Levi get married BEFORE Nov 4th.

“Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”‘

    Sunday News Shows –

    - McCain on “This Week” seem aggressive and defensive – not presidential at all.

    - Obama on “Face the Nation” seemed thoughtful, reasonable, clearheaded. I hope undecideds watched both and saw the contrast.

    - Fox News panel seemed to set the bar so low for SP that if she shows up at the debate and pronounces Gwen Ifil’s name right, they’d consider it a victory. Kristol (at least I think it was him, was reading Mudflats at the same time :-) ) complained about the campaign not letting her be herself. Seemed to be getting back to the notion that what she knows is irrelevant, she’s just qualified b/c she has maverick DNA. Should be an interesting debate.

Mainiac- Given the fact that Sarah Houdini is trying every trick in the book to dodge her *tormenters* to the point that it’s become a national joke, an announcement of a shotgun wedding (and the need to choose family first over frivolous national concerns) would hopefully open the eyes of any fencesitters (or die hard repugs for whom a light bulb suddenly get juice). However, I bet the research pollsters are asking those very questions, ya think?

Funny though that I remember a Sonoma-Williams gift registry (fake, I’m assuming ?) for the couple that hit the email circles about a month ago with a wedding date of October 4 so who knows.

there is an interesting post up at “american conservative” magazine, in a blog, “eunomia,” by daniel larson that you all might be interested and reading and passing along to your “conservative” friends and family.

    it begins:

“Ross mentioned Palin’s old CNBC and C-SPAN interviews as evidence of what she was capable of when she is discussing subjects she is more familiar with, but what becomes painfully clear on reviewing these is that she has an established set of rote remarks on Alaska, energy production and “hungry domestic markets” that she honed over many years and yet she has nonetheless produced confusing or nonsensical answers in connection with her presumed area of expertise in just the last few weeks. If you watch her interview with Bartiromo, you hear all the same things that you’ve heard over the last few weeks including the apparently incorrect 20% figure she keeps throwing around, and you begin to realize that if you pressed her much on any of these points she would resort to the same bizarre filibustering that she did in the Couric interview. Her apparent fluency and ease in the CNBC interview in particular were the products of her being allowed to speak uninterruptedly about something extremely specific to Alaska along with the relative unfamiliarity of her interviewer with Alaska. The questions were not challenging, and there were no follow-ups demanding elaboration or specificity. ”

interesting article. what I can’t understand is why a lot of reports on Palin always begin with “she is smart”. Being able to SOMEWHAT memorize a list of talking points, and having some skills at looking good while public speaking does NOT show me that she is smart. If she were smart, she should be able to discuss the issues “off the cuff” and that she has failed miserably at. My trained dog can memorize tricks and look good! Doesn’t make her(my dog) smart enough to be VP.

    Good Morning Mudpals!

Just stopped by Fox News (a good gauge really) and the interview this morning was about how McCain is coming off snarkey and not “maverick-ish” anymore. The whole ploy about cancelling/not cancelling is not winning him points and he looks weak and will repel undecideds. (paraphrasing here) Bottomline, when Fox starts to rip on him they are in big trouble.

On a light note…every birthday my hubby and I take a trip. We have done Machu Picchu, Paris, Mexico, etc. Well, yesterday afternoon he asked with all sincerity if I wanted to go to Alaska for my birthday this year!! He said “then you could meet some of your friends and show support”. The best part is he’s a Republican for Obama and he really meant it. So I have one question…how’s the weather up there in mid-October? ;)

I must admit my ignorance here, I always thought you were on the same time line as Los Angeles.

Off topic, but until they changed the time zones in Alaska to make things like VOTING and banking and things more convenient, Alaska covered FIVE time zones! Our capital city, Juneau, and that LOVELY little leg of the state known to travelers as the “inside passage,” or South East, used to be in the same time zone as LA, but the whole state, except for the Aleutian chain, was consolidated to what is called the “Alaska Time Zone,” while the chain was put into the Hawaiian time zone, one hour earlier for part of the year, and two hours earlier right now. (They don’t do daylight savings time in the Hawaiian time zone.) I can’t remember when this change was decided, but I moved here in 1980, and it was just before or just after we moved here that they changed it. It’s weird for the lighting, but our sunlight is always in flux, and, like so many aspects of Alaska life, more extreme than down south. Where I live used to be two hours earlier than PST, and on out west there were two more time zones! So our votes REALLY were made LONG after the rest of the U.S. in those days! No wonder it didn’t seem to matter sometimes whether we got in and voted! It was often all decided before some of our polls opened! THIS year it matters SO MUCH! I’m STILL hoping we go BLUE in ALASKA (and NOT from the COLD!!)

But as I’m watching all of it a very strange thought crossed my mind. Does anyone think perhaps Palin accepted the VP nomination because it was her ticket out of the Troopergate investigation?

It obviously wasn’t because she was qualified or could even seriously believe herself she was qualified to take on this responsibility. I mean seriously.

But the speed that the McCain machine descended on Alaska to try and squash the investigation just makes me believes more and more that was a deal offered to Palin if she took the job.

And the speed in which Palin jumped on the train and turned her back on Alaska makes me believe more and more that this investigation has more on Palin than anyone originally thought or knew. Palin may have grabbed a ride on the McCain no-talk express because she needed a ride out of town – FAST!

Bec posted this link to an op ed piece from the Chicago Trib by Mary Schmich. “Tracing Source of Women’s Hate for Palin.”

Here’s a short quote from the piece:

“At its most logical, the hatred many women profess for Palin is rooted in the feeling that she has ascended to power she hasn’t earned and that she could turn that power against the beliefs and best interests of most women.

But the way some women talk about her risks making us look like the very thing she is sometimes accused of being: mean girls.”

Sigh. Men and women can speak viscerally and emotionally about McCain and Obama and Biden. But the minute women respond with outrage to the usurpation of what could be a hugely historic moment for this country, the election of a woman to the Vice Presidency (and potentially, the Presidency), by an embarassingly unqualified, token caricature of a candidate, the ‘mean girl’ stereotype is invoked. And by a woman. Thanks, Mary, for perpetuating one of my least favorite, divisive stereotypes about women.

But look at that first quoted paragraph. If that’s not a good reason to really, really dislike Sarah Palin and what she represents, then what is? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I think what he was really meant to say was… “Good grief George. You and I both know the stupid broad doesn’t have a clue what she is talking about! Quit asking her questions and most of all quit listening to her answers!”

Woohoo! Way to go AKM and Alaskans!!! An AP photo (no story beyond the caption!) of yesterday’s rally appears in our local paper this morning. The photo was of the chickens, a few of the signs and the caption names of two of the participants. No wide shot or mention of the size of the rally, but to have any mention of it here at all is nothing short of astounding.

Our local paper is strongly right-leaning. Ann Coulter is the most favored (and most hated) columnist, and some of the locals think George Will is a liberal. I’ve noticed that the paper has not had an op-ed page several times this week. So locals that don’t read other sources haven’t seen many of the recent conservative columnists questioning McCain’s choice of Palin. Despite all that, there’s the photo, right on the front of the “Second Front” section, where all the national and international news is covered.

As I’ve mentioned before, Bush/Cheney ’04 signs were EVERYWHERE last time, and I’ve only seen one McCain sign this year. During the primaries, Ron Paul yard signs and street corner demos were in evidence.

I’m having problems with Website, too. I wonder if all the new photos that were posted overloaded it for a bit.

Wired — I was disappointed in Mary’s take on Palin “hatred” too. I actually thought the first Tina Fey skit on SNL illustrated the “unearned” aspect of the VP slot in vibrant imagery — just seeing the quivering expression on Amy/Hillary’s face said it all. McCain handed the honor of a female VP candidate to one of the most undeserving people imaginable. And in her narcissistic spunk – Palin jumped at it. So there is a feeling of hatred here – yes – but maybe directed more at McCain, and all the Repugs who immediately started singing her praises and still put up their phoney mantra when interviewed on TV.

The one caveat to this is — we know Palin must be ready to explode from being yanked from her home and comfort zone these past few weeks, holed up in a hotel rooms, traveling all over the place, and bombarded with policies, 101 lessons, and being muzzled. I’m thinking an implosion is near.

Do we “hate” Palin? I think really – we HATE being insulted like this.

The Sept. 22 issue just arrived in Alaska and I’m wondering what corner of the planet Time’s superficial reporting on Sarah Palin is coming from? I wish Palin were “the reformer” she purports to be. Time’s irresponsible reporting on this candidate is about as reckless as John McCain’s selection of her for V.P. I believe you’ll be hearing from women on this one.

Palin has shown to be as ignorant of women’s issues as she is clueless to international affairs. Her tenure as both a local small town politician and that as a short term governor has been rife with scandal and vindictive politics.

OOOOOOh that Times magazine thing has me ticked off!

Here’s my letter that I sent off:

I would think that you, as one of the preeminent voices of the mainstream media, would be in a position to know that following the initial euphoria post-RNC Ms. Palin’s appeal is not worthy of the cover of your magazine. To report her appeal is nothing more than pandering to McCain’s sound-bite campaign.

I am a born & raised Alaskan who has lived here for 35 of my 40 years. I was formerly registered Republican, but am voting Democrat for the first time since I have been able to vote. My husband, who remains a registered Republican, intended to vote for McCain until Palin was added to the ticket. He will now vote for Obama. He & I share the fiscally conservative views of Republicans, but have become disenchanted with their evangelical radicalism and war-mongering over the course of Bush’s tenure in the White House.

Let me be perfectly clear: intelligent & informed women voters are not in the grip of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin represents all that is counter to the rights of women throughout America. Women voters who vote on evangelical beliefs before the economy, military & diplomacy are not putting their country first, and those are the voters in Ms. Palin’s thrall.

The smoke & mirrors game that McCain is playing with Ms. Palin’s flock is a disservice to America. This is not about Obama, everyone deserves to have a vote for whomever they choose; rather this is about the fact that your magazine has chosen to perpetuate this sham. Your credibility is lost. I will never buy your magazine again, even if your cover states that you have the key to everlasting youth, to unlimited riches, to the solution of this unending & pointless war — your story about Sarah Palin is certain to be as credible as any that you might write about those issues.

After reading my opinion column in the Anchorage Daily News this morning, fellow Alaskan blogger Tom Lamb, asks “Why is it that Andrew Halcro who is so critical of Palin, wanted to be on the same ticket with her.”

That’s an easy answer; because I believed Sarah Palin had the qualifications to be a terrific Lt. Governor. And watching her struggle to give coherent answers on the national stage, I believe more today than ever before she has the qualifications to be a terrific Lt. Governor.

  129. 131
    TerpsichoreNo Gravatar says:

I think it might be helpful for us Non-Alaskans to help get the word out about what’s going on up there. I read my local papers (Ft. Laud. Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald) and there’s barely a blip. Granted, there’s a lot going on. But the responses on the blog posts are STILL saying Palin’s got such a high approval rating. At least we can help dispel that myth. And they are not even talking about Troopergate. I haven’t seen the issue raised by anyone lately. The Anti-Palin posts tend to focus on her disastrous showings on the interviews, but as we have seen, some people can see and hear the exact same thing we do, and they see “she held her own” while we see “complete disaster”.

Ignoring subpoenas, though, and encouraging people to do so, that’s bad. So is the McCain campaign apparently not ALLOWING Palin to speak for herself about the matter (Are the Vegas bookies taking bets on when her book deal is signed and for how much?).

If you haven’t already, take this info to your local blogs. Let everyone know the people of Alaska do not have such a favorable rating of their governor and why. The pictures and videos from the rallies are great resources for that.

However, I have one suggestion – when linking to videos, I suggest you use the link straight from YouTube, if available, rather than the mudflats link. Not that I’m so worried that would lead to us being inundated with trolls – I think we know how to handle that – but because if people read the comments here, they might dismiss what they’ve seen or read because the source was “biased”, e.g., “Oh, those mudflatters, there just all biased against her”, whereas the YouTube forum I think provides a little more universality.

We’ve just had a short 15 minutes of analysis of the first debate (on a Swedish current affairs programme). Swedish conclusions: McCain’s body language took things too far; Obama won on most points; Obama was the most presidential and appeared most suitable to be Commander in Chief; Obama is the candidate who is looking ahead and looking for change…

…and the commentators couldn’t keep their smirks under wraps when Palin was mentioned (leading in to next week’s debate).

    Visibility is huge!

Get it out there, Alaskans. Solidarity of souls. You will need your friends and will need people to know you are there, good work!

If, as is looking increasingly possible, Obama and Biden are elected and Palin returns to Alaska as governor-what will happen to Alaska?
One scary possibility is that there will be a surge of the rabid Palin supporters who have sprung up around the country towards Alaska, as a refuge. A kind of self-fulfilling end days stampede. I think certain players might encourage that. At the very least, she will potentially have a huge new pool of outside supporters and money and power to draw on. What kind of threat she could pose to democracy in Alaska remains to be seen. Could it turn out that the rest of the country goes modern and democratic and Alaska turns into a refuge state for every damaging thing that Palin supporters hold dear?

A Palin neofascist dictatorship grips hold of Alaska? The oposition to an Obama administration finds its holdfast in Alaska?

Forgive my concern. The best defence against that danger is to network and build solidarity among Alaskans as well as gain visibility and sympathy nationwide. Which is exactly what Mudflats is doing. Keep up the good work! And for the rest of us outside Alaska-we can’t let ourselves lose touch with Alaskans when this election is over. Sarah is going to be centered in Alaska again, but this time with a hornet’s nest of bitter, defeated supporters from all over the country potentially at her service. Alaskans will need our concern and support. This is no silly battle, this is the real “struggle for survival”.
I so hope Alaska can hold on to the sane and human ties binding neighbor to neighbor that make community life the blessed gift it is, that overcomes maddness and works for the good things possible in life for everyone.

Does that mean he’s actually worried about holding the GOP together???? I would have expected a huge list of moderate blogs to inundate. * the author was not able to find any support for Palin’s claim that she was involved in “trade missions back and forth” with Russia. A commentator mentions that there is an Alaskan Office of International Trade and that there have been Russian political visits, but nothing directly supporting her claim of involvement in a trade mission.

    * when the author asked Palin’s spokeperson Kate Morgan for examples of Russian trade missions, Morgan replied that she could not “legally discuss any trade missions” because of a “stringent” state law prohibiting state employees from discussing matters that the questioner learned about “in the context of the campaign.”

Not hard to believe to Palin embellished her “trade mission” credentials, but very hard to believe that there is a law prohibiting discussion of official state business, even if learned “in the context of a campaign.”

Is there anyone who knows the actual facts on both of these points?

    @ Cassie,
Actually, the national debt clock will only go up about $2300. Sort of gives you a real perspective of the actual size of the total debt if $700,000,000,000 can be added to the total debt and have each person’s share only rise by $2300!

I don’t mean to minimize the per person share of the bailout, but let’s keep it in perspective. For everybody who’s living off their retirement funds or trying to build a 401(k) or an IRA or even a college fund for their kids, take a look at what’s happened to that over the last several months. To do nothing would very likely plunge us (and the rest of world) into a depression — and I’m not talking about a Phil Gramm style mental one.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the total cost will almost certainly be far less than $700 billion. Some economists are even going so far as to predict it will be a net gain to the Treasury. I don’t buy that — at least not yet. But the loan to AIG may already be showing a positive return on investment. As it’s now structured, the bailout is more like capital investment, not just a money sink.

And just maybe, we might just turn the corner on the greed and excesses that got us here. I posted a couple of thoughts today on my blog to add to the discussion.

I am familiar with the economics of all this, but I do not trust that the greed will disappear from the money managers, or the “firms left standing”.

My major concern is this: I have felt for a long time that the “real polls” (see previous postings” are not the ones reported by the MSM. I’ve been trained to follow the money.

In my meager experience, this entire 7 months represents a lining-up-at-the-trough. Line up and get yours before an administrative change.

“The money” indicates to me an insistent poll that the United States is going to vote for Obama.

That said, if you want yours, get it now.

But, again, who is lobbying for us? Where do “we, the people” get in line?

And, coincidentally, if these government welfare “emergencies” continue, how can we fund needed programs in a new administration if the cupboard is bare?

Typically, the neocons foul the nest…our nest…and effectively hamstring an Obama administration.

    My 2 cents.

Somewhere on this site earlier today I read a warning about the practice of “caging”, a new term to me and apparently a scam to disenfranchise voters. I did some google research & find it is a cause for real concern. Please read about it at the link included here & spread it on to others. Forewarned is forearmed. Hard to believe the “dirty tricks” of a legitimate party in a “democratic country”.

    Re: Alaska Trade Missions w/Russia

Heard yesterday at the rally something that relates to that. This person said that MsP had had opportunities to participate in those sorts of forums here in AK while gov, but had not participated in ANY of them. Apparently whenever/wherever it was that she met the Pres of Iceland did not impress her enough to remember that she had done so…

Bwhahahahahaaha! You had some feds come in and take control of your state Gov about a month ago without any cause or legal right, and you all walk around with some signs! Bwhahahaha.

    Alaska is a joke.

“VERY, VERY impressive. I never knew much about Alaska before except that your weather got cold before ours, and that your state was drop dead gorgeous, but I have gained such respect for your courage, your tenacity, your brilliance ( those signs were priceless!) and your willingness to speak up when something is wrong.”

Thank you for all you’ve been doing, and we’re busy spreading the word down here… Form proud2ba mud puppy in Boston.

Proud2b- How long would a crew from Washington last taking over the state house on beacon hill? Oh that’s right…. less than half a second! Nice signs though… Alaska is a joke!

    A Brit Abroad,

I am a bit late in responding (or a bit early, depending on how you look at it), but the simple answer is “NO!” I don’t think I have had a good night’s sleep since this campaign began! and I KNOW I haven’t slept well since Sarah Pitbull notified the world she’s the one who is “in charge of watchin’ Russia and keepin’ us safe!”

Then make that ***OFF KILTER!” I’ve been out “Riding for Obama” until I am pooped! It’s a good thing my horse loves to visit PEOPLE – I am looking for an OBAMA sign to put on her :)

If you haven’t visited the “Aging Hippies for Obama Club – ANYONE CAN JOIN!” thread at the Forum, you have missed reading absolutely incredible stories! They are posted on the General Chat thread.

Oh my! I knew this was a unique and talented group of people (NO! I am not talking about ME!), but you folks, collectively, have restored my belief that there is a huge group of us who are largely unnoticed but genuinely concerned about the future of America.

Your shared experiences have made me laugh, cry, play my “oldies but goodies RECORDS”, call former “partners in crime” to reminisce, hunt-up old pictures and giggle…and, most of all, LONG TO BE IN A JAIL CELL WITH JAMES TAYLOR!

Thanks for allowing us to peek into your pasts, in hopes of rekindling the unity required for changing our country’s future!

    ecp-

I am trying to think of some states in the lower 48 that would allow their entire system of gov and judicial due process to be taken over by a team from Washington for months. I am having a hard time coming up with many State governments that would lie down for that kind of thing. Signs are all fine and dandy- but how come you folks up North have not hired a team of lawyers and press agents to fight back? How come you have not petitioned your state reps to push for a special session in order to back up your bi partisan subpoenas?

Seems pretty weak to me. Nothing trollish about it. You may not like the observation, or the way in which it is framed, but It is a legitimate question.

    PCVIRGINIABEACHNo Gravatar says:

Also- there is an arguement in this thread abotu what Bush has done federally, and that somehow that explains how an entire state can be taken over by outsiders and manipulated for political purposes. That is a weak argument. We are talking about a simple question of single State’s power and authority, being challenged by a partisan outside group that represents a single political party.

Sorry for my framing earlier… I am wondering…. literally, what more is being done?
I have also seen a lot of people stop giving interviews, and retract statements that might have been harmfull to Palin. That has to make me wonder about the protections that are in place for speech.

McCain’s public statement of support for Palin late this week just sounded to sweet to be true. It had to be issued to keep the Palin hoards at bay. I don’t think McCain is happy about Palin’s fans dominating campaign rallies, because they are not his fans. The jokes about her usurping his place as head of the ticket are probably not sending John into convulsions of laughter.

I don’t think John likes Sarah anymore. I think he wants her to go away.

The now established McEdict that this woman should be seen and not heard has gone too far. By now it has surely undermined any claim about Republican support for women’s advancement that her addition to the ticket was originally used to make. It completely obliterates any illusion that the “Hilary voters for McCain/Palin” phenomenon is anything more than a Republican hoax.

Women should be seen but not heard.
Repeat after me: Women should be seen but not heard.

This team is off their game-the partnership is on the rocks.

    P.S.
Women are being taught a new lesson in gamesmanship.
I wonder how the evangenical women who were honestly looking for Sarah’s candicacy to help expand their often restricted roles within their church and culture are taking this. I actually do hope women in those situations find a way to increase their opportunities. I think we all might care to be supportive of their struggles in this regard. Oppression is not healthy.

Been lurking for weeks but decided I’d better come out onto the mudflats with the following info:

I’ll post this on other threads and will try to join and post to the forum too, but I wanted to let people know that there is a rally in the planning stages for Juneau on October 11, prob. at 10 am, on the steps of the Capitol. I think the organizing group is calling it Alaskans Protesting Palin or something like that. Bring signs, mudflats/mudpuppy boots, spouses, kids, friends, neighbors, dogs, whatever. I’ll post more details when available. They’re trying to keep it under the radar for now, but I figure this is a relatively safe place to start to get out the word. Let’s try to circle the Capitol (not that she’ll be there to see us, but…)!
