Brutus Speaks – The Palin Reaction to Alaskans for Truth Rally

truth14.jpg

Sunday, organizers and rally-goers were basking in the afterglow of the “Hold Palin Accountable” rally. The rally got front page coverage in the Anchorage Daily News, and was featured on local and national broadcast news. It was also picked up by newspapers across the country. This was a big step up from the coverage of the last anti-Palin rally. We are being heard.

Shortly after the rally, we heard the official response from Sarah Palin, via Meg Stapleton. For a little background, Stapleton was a former news anchor at KTUU, Alaska’s most widely viewed news station. She has at various times also been Palin’s press secretery , and special assistant. She was offered and accepted a position as mouthpiece for the McCain-Palin campaign in August. People used to like Meg Stapleton, the way you do news anchors and assistants to popular governors.

Since Stapleton’s faustian bargain with the McCain campaign, she has been the smirking, smearing, condescending, fib-telling face of the “Truth Squad.” The very name of the Squad is Orwellian, and so is Stapleton. She keeps saying, “2+2=5″, and expecting the world to believe it. Not only has the Truth Squad been dishonest, but they have systematically and surgically attacked well-respected public servants, for doing their jobs with integrity and the best interest of Alaskans at heart.

Here’s a good summary from The Anchorage Press (9/25/08)

“Today, we reiterate and emphasize the ongoing cooperation in the truly independent investigation involving the only legal forum in the state for the Monegan inquiry,” Stapleton said Monday. “As you know, that is the Personnel Board.”

Except that we don’t know that. And that was never asserted prior to Palin’s August 29 selection by McCain as his running mate.

And that’s not the least of the inaccuracies and inconsistencies being peddled by Stapleton and O’Callaghan.

When Stapleton alleged that Senator Hollis French (D-Anchorage) decided not to subpoena Palin’s former chief of staff Mike Tibbles, KTUU’s Jason Moore pointed out that it was actually Fairbanks Republican Representative Jay Ramras that requested Tibbles not be subpoenaed. Following that report on KTUU, according to TPMMuckraker.com, Stapleton called Moore’s wife and told her that Moore was calling Stapleton and O’Callaghan liars, then followed up by calling KTUU news director Steve Mac Donald to complain.

In trying to paint Commissioner Monegan as a rogue, the Truthers alleged that Monegan had sought to go to Washington, D.C. in July to seek federal funds to fight sexual violence in Alaska without the administration’s approval (the campaign called this “the final straw”). However, ABC News unearthed the travel authorization—signed by Palin’s chief of staff Mike Nizich—authorizing Monegan to go to Washington to attend a meeting with Senator Lisa Murkowski.”

OK, now we’re ready for the official response from Meg Stapleton about the rally that saw more than 1500 people converge in a downtown Anchorage Park. It is conveniently color coded for you in a lovely shade of muck…just to beat the point to death.

“Clearly this was an Obama rally and nothing else. The rally proves the point of partisanship which the Governor has been trying to remove from the investigation in an effort to get a fair and just result.

The Governor remains an open book and is fully cooperating with the non-partisan Personnel Board and its independent investigator, which are statutorily authorized to conduct an investigation.

As you no doubt noticed the personal attacks at this rally, it is unfortunate that while we discuss the Governor and her record, the Obama campaign is resorting to personally attacking those who will continue to stand with the Governor and Alaskans and against personal smears.”

Now you know why several people at the rally had signs directed squarely at Meg Stapleton. When Alaskans start quoting Julius Caesar’s “Et tu, Brute?” (Even you Brutus?) you realize the extent to which she is seen as the ultimate betrayer.

Strangely, the last time Meg Stapleton got national media attention was during her days at KTUU when a story she was filming made it to Jay Leno. While she was reporting a human interest story, at Christmas time, she knelt down by one of Santa’s reindeer. It got spooked and literally ran her over. Sometimes animals have pretty amazing instincts.

Please help spread the following statement across the West and elsewhere where hunting and fishing is important to help counter the NRA attacks and lies. Target outdoor publications, newspaper opinion pages, and groups in areas with outdoor interests.

    Obama on Hunting and Fishing

“Hunting and fishing are not just recreational pursuits, they are part of our national heritage. America’s hunters and anglers uphold a tradition that connects generations and brings families and friends together across our great nation. Today, we celebrate this tradition and the conservation legacy of hunters and anglers. “National Hunting and Fishing Day is a time to reaffirm our commitment to America’s sportsmen. As President, I will protect the right to bear arms, increase access to places to hunt and fish, take on polluters and clean up our streams and lakes, and protect our nation’s important wildlife habitat and wetlands. I will enhance programs that encourage young people to hunt and fish and respect and protect the outdoors. “Our nation’s sportsmen have made sure that this and future generations can enjoy our natural resources and wildlife. As President, I will stand with them and ensure that America’s hunting and fishing heritage endures.”

My wanting Obama to be the president isn’t why I want the Gov. I don’t want the Gov. to blow off the law and the people. The fact that she is doing this, just like her running mate, is why I don’t want THEM and their ideology and outlook to continue to run the country! That’s one part of it.

A completely different part of it is that I want Obama for president because I believe he will do what he says he will do, be accountable, think!, make changes that improve the lives of EVERY ONE both here and abroad (with our continued help and support!), and be intelligent, caring, courageous and powerful with INTEGRITY and RESPECT for persons and for democracy!

That has nothing to do with Palin – IN EVERY SINGLE WAY! Those who want to continue to rape the earth, (and probably charge us for the kit!), and to spit on the downtrodden, those who want to continue to dehumanize their own and every other country that doesn’t serve THEIR needs and comforts, those who want to lick the boots of the rich and famous and kick everybody else in the face — those who can’t allow any voices but their own — those folks need to think – HARD – about what America means. There were very few Obama signs at the rally. I spoke with someone, obviously bemused (out of towner pilot, I think) about it for a bit. As I told him, it was NOT an Obama rally — that is NEXT Saturday — it was an Alaskans For Truth rally. My signs, and I brought five of them (handed out to others), did not say a thing about Obama. The fella had heard about Troopergate of course. The main goals for the ralliers, I told him, were to eject the McCain legal team from Alaska, recall a corrupt Attorney General beholden to our Gov for his job, and to ensure that our legislators see that the Branchflower investigation is carried out and the results made public.

Anyone viewing the signs can see that there was little about Obama in this rally. Of course it behooves Meg, as a McLame snake in the grass, to continue to use their “partisan” & “personal attacks” lines. Naturally it is the McLame campaign M.O. to use partisan & personal attacks, so they would not recognize a non-partisan issue if it bit them in the ass. Further, of course it’s personal, these are PEOPLE committing these outrageous acts against our state & public servants, not inanimate objects!

There was an important document given out at the rally, “The Countdown to Truth” — I don’t know if it’s been addressed at the Forum, but if it hasn’t I will type it up over there. Please please check for it (in 1/2 hour or so) and read up. It is very important, and will shed more light on the truth of the rally & what Alaskans for Truth are trying to accomplish. If it’s already on the forum somewhere I will come back to this thread and tell you all where.

    **************************
The official “Countdown to Truth” begins on October 1st…10 days from the date we are supposed to receive the report from Stephen Branchflower, the independent investigator appointed by the Judicial Council. AnneinWA is exactly correct. Not passing the bailout was an act of political cowardice. The House members know there’s a lot of anger out beyond the Beltway. Some of it’s rightly directed at Wall Street, but Congress aided and abetted them by de-regulating the industry and then not funding the inspectors or providing any oversight themselves.

So, now, rather than exert some real leadership, they’re looking to each other — sort of a “you go first” deal. They want the plan to pass, but don’t want their name attached, especially this close to the election. That’s not putting country first. That’s not leadership. It’s cowardice.

Meanwhile the Dow is dumping, along with the European markets as bank failures spread there as well. That’s why I’ve been blogging about the bailout for days. Please forgive the shameless self-promotion, but the links from our names to our blogs seem to have disappeared with the migration to the new site…

The bailout failed today because of politics not because anyone in the House really believed it wasn’t necessary. That is the truth. I know there is much discussion everywhere that this bailout isn’t necessary. Kos himself has come out strongly against it.

But as I said (in another thread) orginally I was against it (gut reaction) but now, I’m not so sure. I’m not a young kid anymore. I’m a middle-aged woman who has worked hard her entire life and I have a very modest retirement compared to a lot of people. But sorry but I really don’t want to lose it.

But what we really need right now is strong leadership. Bush is of course a huge joke and with his 18% approval rating (or whatever it’s tanking at these days) he is completely useless. McCain is just an ineffective as he is a proven liar so no one really believes anything he says.

Obama, however, could really provide some very necessary leadership at this critical time because people believe him. I fear he is trying to avoid the fallout from being too supportive of the bailout plan as so many voters oppose it.

This is a crazy time right now. The leadershp void in this country is just plain scary. I understand that it’s not Barack Obama’s responsilibity to take the leadership reins as he is not the president and he did not put us in this mess.

However, I personally believe, Barack Obama is one of the few politicians right now, that still has the trust of the majority of the American people.

I sincerely wish he would speak out clearly about where he stands on this bailout and more importantly why! The American people need assurances that this bailout is necessary and I personally believe Barack Obama is about the only guy around who can provide it.

Someone needs to tell the American people what the ramifications are if this bailout doesn’t go through.

That is what I personally am still not hearing loud and clear and trust me I’m looking and I’m listening. I want details and specifics – not gloom and doom end of the world predictions. (If I wanted that I would join Sarah Palin’s church).

And I believe that lack of specifics is what has turned the American public against the bailout.

I’m 64 and keep hoping it will recover before I’m 70, but I’m willing to risk it all in the hope that they will come up with a better plan which will be more acceptable. If you don’t want her to debate then come out and say she can’t debate because she sucks! We all know that anyway so maybe you could garner one iota of respect for telling the truth just once in this campaign.

Pathetic. There are no words for how low McCain has sunk.

He just blamed Obama for the whole mess today

That Stapleton would link the rallies to Obama/Biden is ludicrous and just demonstrates the level of denial and spin. She’s thinking like the Republican machine and doesn’t know genuine citizen concern and participation when she sees it.

The best plan I have seen for the bailout is the Swedish plan detailed in the NYT. The current measure, also known as ‘take the money and run,’ deserved to fail. As Paul Krugman just said on his blog, ‘We have become a banana republic with nukes.’ Thanks, GOP. Now Limbaugh is trying to pin this on the Dems, as is McCain. There are no perfectly white hats here but it is a thankless task to clean up or at least put a finger in the dike during this benighted administration.

I want Obama out in the media NOW condemning McCain’s statement and putting out the TRUTH.

How exactly is this Obama’s fault?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

From everything I’m reading, it’s more McCain’s fault because he has no leadership status AT ALL within his party and was not able to recruit the necessary Republican votes needed to pass the bailout plan.

Republicans bailed on accepting the plan after promising they would support it.

    How is that Obama’s fault?

Or is it Obama’s fault that McCain voted against any regulations involving the banking industry for the last 24 years?

Ok, I just read something that makes a lot of sense. The 700 billion bail out of Wall Street was supposed to cost each taxpayer $2,500. How many taxpayers lost that amount of money in their retirement account today with the stock market falling 700 points. And the same will probably happen the day after and the day after.

So, which would you rather have. Would you rather pay $2,500 to bail out the Wall Street thieves, and retain the money in your retirement account or would you rather do nothing and see your retirement go down the drain.

If we bail out Wall Street, we will all feel bad because they don’t deserve it. But Obama can fix things so that Wall Street can never rip us off again like that. I’m not sure how Obama will be able to fix a total melt down of our economy and the loss of your retirement.

    Re: the bailout
I don’t think anyone WANTS the bailout, but my husband (primary wage-earner) works for Science Diet. If the market tanks and the economy worsens, there is a probability that customers will no longer buy premium food for their pets. If this happens, he loses his job and we lose insurance. So although “No to the bailout!” sounds good, the truth is that we need to do it. Hold our noses if we must, but it has to pass.

    @oc liberal
I’m with you! Whether the comment about pulling SP from the debate is true or not, it’s believable… and that in itself says volumes. Given her response to Katie Couric (and McCain’s own response during the debate) on the economic crisis and how the bailout would create jobs and reform healthcare…. Need I say more?

Bush would be better off going on vacation. At least then he wouldn’t be doing any more harm. He needs to let the grown-ups try to pull the fat out of the fire.

Pelosi may have been absolutely correct in her assessment of blame. I agree with her. But that wasn’t the time to make her remark She should have known that it was incendiary. I was disappointed in her. That said, I do think someone should go up to the Hill and knock some heads together. We don’t need political cowardice right now. We need some actual leadership. No wonder people are even more pissed at Congress than at Bush!

So, right after I’ve blasted Congress for being self-serving, I just posted a rant on my blog… ;-)

This ‘bailout” has not been explained to the public at all well. It MUST be passed in some form, or the consequences to people’s jobs, life savings, retirement accounts, etc will suffer much more than the “fat cats” that many people seem to think not passing the bill will hurt. With credit tightened up to the extreme all over the world, it will be harder and harder to meet payrolls, expand businesses, and hold on to your job. By not passing a bill, you end up cutting off your nose to spite your face. The financial crisis that is pending will be your ‘trickle down economics’ big time! I think some people don’t really understand the word ‘socialism’, confusing it with communism. Canada, New Zealand, Australia, France, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Austria, etc etc are all DEMOCRACIES with some sociaIZED programs. Needless to say, it works quite well and has for centuries. What is going on now in the US is unfettered greed run amok, passed off as capitalism that is ‘good’ for the average citizen. Lunacy – it’s good for those at the top with little trickle down effect for those lower down on the social ladder.

Congress is recieving messages against the bailout of at least 100-1. This is a populist movement that includes both Democrats and Rebublicans by the tens of thousands! Contact your Senators and Represenatives!

They admit that they have no idea if this massive bailout, using our money, would even work! Remember the rush to war in Iraq? We had to do it immediatly or there would be a mushroom cloud! So… is this a financial mushroom card? Yes! Exactly! Yet, another fraud by our Government!

I have to agree with Soldotna Sue. I contacted Stevens, Young & Murkowski and asked the they proceed with caution! This is not something that happened overnight, and it will not be solved overnight. I particularly want the issues of executive compensation & Sec of Treasury powers addressed. We cannot have it both ways! We can have a reasonable & equitable solution that will work in the long-term OR a quick-fix. I don’t think we can have both, but that’s just my opinion of course.

In regard to the latest remarks by mclame re: Obama sticking a spoke in things, one hopes that voters who have not yet decided on a candidate see through his posturing & partisan poison. There has been plenty of flip-flopping going on, and hopefully the big MSM streams will call him out on it. Hold on to hope everyone!

From my vantage point, there was never meant to be a fix, but a short term necessity in order to get the markets flushed with money again in order to provide needed credit.
Without that, people, small businesses and corporations would not be able to get the money needed to do day to day living, such as buying homes, cars, meeting payrolls, etc.

My issue is they are not selling it with the correct amount of information. They keep calling it a “BailOUt” and it is not a bailout, notany more. This is no longer about Wall street, it is about mainstreet. As someone said in an earlier post, almost every area of our lives is tied to wall street in some way.

We cannot let the economy or wall street crash, “don’t forget 1929″. That is not an option. People think they are losing jobs and homes now, they’ve not seen an anything yet. Not to mention the world markets. AsUS goes; so goes the rest of the world.

Congress, Wall Street and the media have all talked about the doom and gloom and have not provided enough information to the average American as to the benefit of this on the upside. IT is not guaranteed, however there were provisions included that would help protect taxpayers as much as possible.

Bottom line is, that need to st op the scare, panic tactics and give a realistic explanation as to why this is a good deal based on the circumstances.

The main thing is don’t panic, get information, don’t listen to the media or the politicians and begin looking at what additional options we need to put in place on a personal level to increase our own revenues.
