McCain Camp Figures Out Sarah Palin’s Problem!
29 09 2008Rarely do things actually make me laugh out loud, alone in a room…especially the Wall Street Journal. But, there’s a first time for everything.
(clearing throat and trying to be serious)
Apparently Republicans have figured out what Palin’s problem is, and what she needs to do to bolster her plummeting poll numbers. I DARE you to keep a straight face.
Some prominent Republicans and senior members of Congress have expressed worries about certain facets of the Palin campaign, particularly that Gov. Palin may be “overprepared” and not encouraged to be herself, an adviser said.
And, the same article plants the seed for the “need to spend more time with my family” excuse that some are starting to think may be the excuse used to mark the end of her candidacy if things tank after the debate.
“For his part, Mr. Palin has worried about the frequent separation of his wife from her family, friends and Alaska staff, an adviser said.”
Ahhh…Todd is not pleased.
But, back to the debate on Thursday… Here’s the strategy we can expect.
“It’s time to let Palin be Palin — and let it all hang out,” said Scott Reed, a Republican strategist. Yes, enough of that”overprepared” rigid Palin who lets none of her personality escape. Go ahead….let it all hang out. I’ve got my popcorn.

SP has a problem if she drops out. After all the interference of the McCain people in Alaska politics and Troopergate, will they stay if she isn’t in the race? Think of all the people on both sides of the aisle she–and they–have ticked off! I don’t see them as ready to cut a deal with her, so she’ll need the atack dogs to help her out of this mess! Can McCain afford to leave them in Alaska to do this? Seems he’d need them and the money for spin and to launch the new VP candidate (Pilsbury Dough Boy? It least he’s served on a ship!) If she doesn’t make a deal with McCain for this support, I’m not sure she can afford to drop out, but just has to hope Troopergate is all taken care of before the election.
If she drops out after they’re elected (Jaws theme here) then McCain’s appointment to the VP slot has to be approved by the Senate!!!!!!!!! How fun it that! And if there’s no VP and we need a replacement Pres, well, then it would be the Speaker of the House, and right now, that’s Nancy Pelosi. She’s a mother of 5, too. And religious. And successful. Say what you will about her politics, in any way you cut it, she’s sure more ready for the job than Ms Troopergate 2008.

Thanks everyone for the words for my Palin Lingo Bingo game that we’ll be playing during the debate. 8 of us heading to the local brewhouse/theater where it will be on the big screen, with beer & food served. Excellent night!!!
I added Christian Values to the list, of course! Don’t know how you missed that one, you heathens!
And welcome Ira! We have all had our days where it was all too much and the hatefulness of this divisive election got us down. I’ve had a couple of days where I got my venting done via mudflats. This is such a great community, though, that I worked through it. Hope that you find it as supportive & engaging as I have.
g’nite everyone!

If by some horrid chance McCain wins, I do not for a minute believe Palin would agree to drop out. She is a narsisist, and believes she is smarter than she is. I believe she will do what she can to get power, once she is in office.

Rene in Texas, 85 billion split between every adult is way more sensible than what’s been planned so far by the congress. Let the idiot companies and their CEO’s sink. Give all the tax payers a break. And for Lord’s sake, do something that makes people happy. That hasn’t happened in the last 7 1/2 years. We’ve earned it!

Thanks, Enjay. That’s what I based my question on – her inability, so far, to separate personal beliefs and public service. It just seems impossible to me that she should be able to do a 180 going from local and state politics to national and international politics. It’s another thing that makes her dangerous… and I think that no amount of “cramming for knowledge” can outdo what’s running her mind. She may be able to learn to cover it up well for the sake of her public image (i.e., apparent vote-worthiness), but her stripes are inside her skin and I don’t see them changing.
Interesting to me is that much of what seems to be so attractive about her here (to her fans, of course) is a big turnoff to people in Europe. You can’t really find a good word about her on German-language news sites and the BBC. A European is hard pressed to be infatuated with a politician whose claim to fame is “I’m just like you” and things like shooting moose and liking hockey. If it’s the same distance from where you live to the nearest trouble spot of Islamic fighting as it is from the US coast to Kansas, a hockey mom in America isn’t what you’re hoping and praying for… you want skilled, capable, serious politicians at the top of the country which has the power to make all hell break loose in your neighborhood.
I haven’t read anything mentioning race (black/white isn’t really a topic of general interest there), but people do get suspicious when someone comes barging in with Jesus on his or her shoulder. Religious hardliners have wreaked much havoc on Europe (and beyond) over the centuries, so the suspicion – or call it caution – seems justified. The same goes for gung-ho warmongers.

Before heading off to bed – will take a shot at answering you question(s)
She can’t or won’t — looking back at the blog over the last month – she continues to inject her personal & religious beliefs into her “work” as mayor or governor.
Troopergate is an example of personal retaliation against someone who offended her or her family
Picketing the local hospital in Wasilla because they performed abortions – against her religious & personal beliefs that life begins at conception – regardless of rape / incest
Charging rape victims for their own rape kits – not just to save money in the community of Wasilla – but probably because Rape Kits generally offer a “morning after pill” thereby offending her religious & personal beliefs

JT, that’s what I’m thinking. My sister and I discussed very briefly what we think of Palin, and we both came up with “Hitler”. Not that there’s a direct comparison, mind you, but some of the parallels are nevertheless scary. The immense personal ambition to make it to the top (didn’t Palin say “I want to be president” when she was told she might make governor in as little as – what, ten years?), the using of people to climb up and then the dropping of them (how many of those who paved her way to governorship has she fired since then?), the knack for rallying masses of people by way of “talk” (she’s credited with having a real gift for “reading” an audience and knowing and delivering what they want to hear)… these are just a few examples that don’t have much weight over here and yet seem so obvious where people have cheered and then suffered from a politician’s blind ambition and refusal to keep personal interests and public duty apart.
Honestly, if there’s only little old McCain between her and the presidency, she’d be as good as there. The mind reels at the thought.

I received this in an email I just wanted to see what others thought about this plan. If this is what we could receive with 85 bil what would 700 bil equal.
I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. etc>>>
This email has been doing the rounds for some time.
I was told that it is incorrect…too many zeros (0000s).
Apparently if the $85 billion was divided out each person would only get about $425

JTNo.
Don’t believe for a moment that McCain will give her anything meaningful to do as VP. He has just used her to get the vote. She will be shut out and relagated to social functions. OHHHH POOR Sarah….NOT.

If you give everybody enough money to pay off their debts, and they do. Doesn’t that mean that all the lenders have cash but no income?

Hi Zim, How’re the markets in Oz? We’re a bit shaky over here – one Swedish bank rumoured to bit a bit unsteady, but I don’t think it will be allowed to collapse.
I have Palin fatigue today, I just want to hide under the covers and wake up to a Democratic new world on Nov 5. Still, I’m glad someone made the point that there’s not really that much difference between Islamic and Christian fundamentalists/extremists – somebody want to point it out to them?

***TOTALLY OFF TOPIC***
If you haven’t visited the “Aging Hippies for Obama Club – ANYONE CAN JOIN!” thread at the Forum, you have missed reading absolutely incredible stories! They are posted on the General Chat thread.
Oh my! I knew this was a unique and talented group of people (NO! I am not talking about ME!), but you folks, collectively, have restored my belief that there is a huge group of us who are largely unnoticed but genuinely concerned about the future of America…and we may just be the October/November surprise!
Your shared experiences have made me laugh, cry, play my “oldies but goodies RECORDS”, call former “partners in crime” to reminisce, hunt-up old pictures and giggle…and, most of all, LONG TO BE IN A JAIL CELL WITH JAMES TAYLOR!
Thanks for allowing us to peek into your pasts, in hopes of rekindling the unity required for changing our country’s future!

Much as I’d love to receive that check for $425,000.00, the math works out to $425.00. Remember how much good that $600.00 “stimulus check” did for ya? It bought me 3 1/2 tanks of fuel for my truck…

Todd worrying she might not be spending enough time with her family reminds me of the scene in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” where Loretta Lynn is recording her first song in the studio and can’t do it till her husband brings the kids in to be her audience.

2 things:
Mr. Palin = reTODD
second. Joe Biden has just as much common man appeal as SWWNBN has as the hockey mom. If she goes on about her family life, he can too. And he can talk about his son in Iraq, if she does. he can talk about taking the train to work, too. That will be a losing argument for her. He’s the opposite of elitist, IMHO. And his smile lights up a room as well as hers.

From Huffington Post:
Top 10 Reasons Sarah Palin Cancels The Debate:
10. Suspicious Russian tourists spotted across the Bering strait in Dezhnevo
9. Wrasslin’ a bear
8. Learns Tina Fey will be watching
7. When taken on tour of White House by McCain handlers, is “inadvertently” locked in Cheney’s man-sized safe
6. Schedule for memorizing state capitals thrown off by need for new schedule to memorize states
5. Speechless after finally looking up what “MILF” stands for
4. On deadline to finish her book, Namin’ Your Baby the Alaskan Way
3. Needs more time to really nail those hilarious hair-plug zingers
2. No matter how hard she scrubs, she can’t get Kissinger’s moral stank off of her
1. Stuck in traffic on the Bridge to Nowhere

I suggest you go back to shots. Why be sober in the second half-hour? If you train yourselves to associate Palin’s ravings with tasty munchies, you will end up thinking of her every time you have some – wouldn’t work for me, how about you?
Avril, you wrote:
“Are the candidates allowed to wear ear pieces to be given info while at the podium while debating?”
No.
“If not then how do we know that they are complying?”
Search under Palin’s hair if she’s wearing it down.
“Also do they know the questions in advance?”
If the questioner is honest, no.

Not totally farfetched. In 1900 the New York State Republicans pushed Governor Theodore Roosevelt to run for vice president because they wanted him out of New York. McKinley and Roosevelt were elected, and then McKinley got blown away. McCain claims to be a successor to Roosevelt – but could Palin be hoping she is?
JM, you wrote: “Are there any people who prefer being the ‘power behind the throne’ rather than on it? [If one studies histories of monarchies, quite often there have been regents who really ran things on 'behalf of' minor kings.]”
Dick Cheney, Karl Rove…
Ira, you wrote : “I have no college education

I would not have guessed, after reading your other messages, that you have not had the benefit of higher education. So the answer to your question is, Yes. You think, and you write in complete, grammatical sentences. Therefore you are the enemy.

My grades in English were the German equivalent of the American “F” for several years running before that, so it’s rather obvious that “school” and “I” simply never got along. I’ve always been a voracious reader, though, and incorrigibly curious about everything and nothing.
Being free to make up one’s mind based on a grand variety of information rather than having to go by limited and pre-chewed opinion would serve our politicians well too – and even more Us The People. ‘Course, that’s not realistic, but it’s a nice dream.
