Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

All I Want for Christmas is….a Deck of Alaska Outlaw Playing Cards!

I don’t know what enterprising soul did this, but they deserve my $9.95.

Alaska Outlaw Playing Cards! Brilliance.

And, of course, the majority of the deck is made up of politicians. Some names you may recognize are Sarah Palin as the Queen of Clubs, Ted Stevens as the Ace of Clubs. His soon to be indicted son Ben is the Jack of the same suit. And of course there are a whole slew of lesser known political ne’er do wells, and historical figures to round out the deck.

outlaw-cards

The idea for Alaska Outlaw Cards was sprung sometime in 2007 in Anchorage, Alaska amidst a major local corruption scandal featuring a large cast of colorful Alaska characters. Grab your history books and you will find that this has been a long-time state tradition: swindling, bribing, cheating and otherwise bucking the establishment in uniquely rebellious Alaska style. Hence, the Alaska Outlaw Cards were born.

Share them with your friends, send one as a gift to your Uncle Ted, or start up a friendly game of poker, just don’t get caught cheating. This quality deck of 52 playing cards (and two Jokers) features 52 different Alaska characters.

And if you order the “Joe Six-Pack” special, they’ll send you seven decks for $59.70. Stockings across Alaska and beyond are sure to have a little extra something this year!

There’s even a little video analysis of the deck, courtesy of the Anchorage Daily News.

There’s no way I can wait for Santa for this one.  I’m on a mission.

I hope Frank Murkowski is included! Instead of “selling” the senate seat for a better job for a family member, he just gave the better job directly to Lisa, eliminating the middle man. He is no better than Blagojevich, just more efficient.

I made my first major forey (sp?) into the forum last night commenting about the porposed amendemt to end Presidential pardons. My comment was totally calm and clean. It froze, I couldn’t even edit it, couldn’t post it, couldn’t log off, couldn’t close the internet, couldn’t restart my computer and had to power down and reboot. Wasss UP?

I’m hoping some of the original swindlers from a hundred years ago are on a few of the cards. Soapy Smith and E. T. Barnette come readily to mind.

Although we were really pissed at Frank the Bank for putting Lisa in his senate seat, Lisa was actually qualified for that seat. She’s a lawyer who had served a couple of terms in the Alaska Senate. There’s a good chance that if she had stood for election to that seat, she would have won it on her own merits. And, as it turns out, she’s a pretty good US Senator who has since won re-election all by herself.

If you ever get to DC, go pop your head in Lisa’s office. She’s on the 7th floor of the Senate Hart Building, down the hall from Obama’s office and across the hall from Arlen Specter. She’s got a gorgeous Tlinget button blanket on the wall and a bunch of other very cool Alaskan artwork in the reception area. Her conference room that we met in has a painting of our old bucketline dredge in it. I always wear a 1/4 ounce nugget that literally came from 100 yards upstream of that dredge. My mining camp is two miles upstream. Lisa and I both got a kick out of the coincidence.

Maybe Lisa was qualified and could have won on her own but that is hardly the issue! Nepotism equals entitlement equals personal gain. It is wrong! Maybe the person Bagojevich would have appointed would have been qualified, too.

Even Lisa says she originally got her seat through nepotism. Blag was trying to SELL the senate seat — there’s a huge difference there.

Some of the 26 potential candidates to replace Frank Murkowski in the US Senate were Johne Binkley, Jerry Mackie, Jerry Hood and Sarah Palin. In hindsight, Frank the Bank probably did us a huge favor by putting Lisa in his seat.
