Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Don Young. Why?

You walk into my office and see me sitting in front of my computer, violently banging my head on the desk, obviously unaware of your presence.

“Why?” [bang] “Why?!” [Bang] “WHY?!” [BANG]

Suddenly noticing you, I rub my forehead and smile sheepishly. “Good morning,” I say. “I was just thinking about the fact that Don Young is about to begin his 19th term in congress as the one and only representative of the state of Alaska. How are you?”

There’s an interview with Don Young in Politico, and it ‘s everything we’ve come to expect from our “Congressman for all Alaska.” Which is to say, it makes many Alaskans want to write an open letter to all members of the U.S. House of Representatives saying we are deeply deeply sorry, and many of us just don’t get it either. But it’s hard to write an open letter to congress while your hands are on your face.

Last week, Shenanigans wrote an item about the many animal carcasses in Georgia Republican Rep. Paul Broun’s office. (A lion, a bear and six animal heads.) But that doesn’t nearly compare to the menagerie in Young’s office — which could lovingly be known as a pet cemetery. Thirty-three heads and 21 horns, to be exact.

And apparently Young wouldn’t mind another head on the wall, if only metaphorically. Here he speaks of John Boehner, and his own ouster from the top Republican spot on the House Natural Resources Committee.

“He’s a big boy,” says Young, “and he’s puffed up with big horns and struts around the mountain, and he’s taking care of all those does. And he’s doing good, but there’s a young ram, and he sees he has a little limp in his step. So he fights the ram. And the old ram just gives him hell and finally whips the young ram and knocks him off the hill. But the old ram is out of breath and limping a little more and there’s another young ram ready to take him on.” Pause. “It happened to me this month!” Young readily offers. “But what they don’t know is, I’m going to go back and kick their ass!”

OK, I could really do without the mental image of John Boehner strutting around Capitol Hill “taking care of all those does,” but it’s too late now. There’s no unringing that bell.

Speaking of unpleasant images, I’ll give you the option of viewing Don Young in his natural habitat, aka the “pet cemetery” rather than just posting it here forcing you to see it against your will. For the morbidly curious, click HERE.

As for me, (rubbing that big knot on my head), if I’m only going to get one member of the House of Representatives, please can’t it be someone who doesn’t need testosterone-laden animal imagery to make a point?

I think I need a bag of ice.

I wonder if Don Young got the drop on any of those beasties whose heads are on the wall by carrying a concealed loaded weapon on his person, just in case they drew first…

Nah. It was illegal, and Pres. Bush’s removal of the ban on concealed weapons in National Parks still doesn’t make it illegal until early next year.

Don Young wouldn’t do anything illegal, would he?

I guess I just don’t understand the fascination of having a beautiful – but dead – animal head on a wall. A stuffed animal of any kind in a room or an animal skin rug, either.

Not to offend anyone reading this, but I think it speaks to their soul – that any person would choose to do something like this. There is something within me that strives to protect those without a voice – be it a small child, an elderly person, a little puppy or beautiful Brian the moose.

    Just sayin’

Jayzus!! Who sounds more stupid…..Young, Palin, or Dyson???

I’m beginning to see why many Alaskans are apparently not concerned about Palin’s critical shortage of intellectual discipline. They’ve been hearing this tripe from all quarters.

Side note….I can’t say that my confidence in our leaders in Washington has been elevated much by Young’s unfortunate comparison with rams in rut over fertile does. Seems like a recent Clinton got into a wee pickle by “taking care of all those does” instead of keeping his mind on governing.

I am beginning to wonder about most of the politicians in Alaska…Palin, Stevens, Dyson, Young?
Here we have Andrew Halrco who ran for Governor and lost but was in the House for a few years, Senator Begich, who barely won over corrupt & Convicted Ted Stevens? Is the only requirement to have a pulse and a barely functioning brain to be elected for most of the elected positions? :(
I was trying to post this to the “moose nugget’ thread but the tubes ate it up!
OK the more I think of this, the more mad I become! :( I do not live in Alaska either, but since barbie was foisted on us by John mccain as VP I feel entitled to know, is she a honest person? Is she Ethical? This investigation (troopergate) was going on During the Campaign!!!
I live in the SF bay area and write Sen. Diane Feinstein allot, and also a Rep. that I don’t really care for, but whether pro or con (such as the bailout) they always reply in a well written, courteous, respectful way. Sometimes its email, and many times I’ve received written letters from Sen. Feinstein. Never ever, in my life received the unprofessional POS email that Dyson sent!!!! I have gotten a couple of emails from Reps/Leg re: Troopergate and most being email were somewhat “informal” but not disrespectful and full of hubris & downright idioticy, like Dyson’s!
Is there somewhere to report Senators like that??? He is SUPPOSED to be a US Senator and report to the American people.

Just checking…not that it makes his analogy any clearer- I’d give him a “D” due to lack of clarity. Talk about an ego- I don’t think the Repubs will be putting another “tainted” Senator back in a powerful position…not a wise move, if they want to get rid of the corrupt label-

    SoCalWolfGal (14:30:25) :

I agree on Obama’s choices; Sen. Ken Salazar from Colorado is a moderate Democrat who is experienced in environmental law and Western issues. He is not totally pro-business like the last few- We will miss him as our Senator, but Gov. Ritter, also a Dem, should appoint a good choice.

lol, the first time I heard that, flipping the channels, I thought, “Who’s that idiot?” and kept going through the channels. Then someone at work told me it was a classic and I should watch it, so on the 24 hour special last year, I sat through the whole film and saw how funny it was.

Salazar is definitely Western; his family has ranched/farmed in Colorado for more than 100 years. He is a lawyer, and has been good (in CO and in Senate) at creating consensus. He is against drilling in the Arctic Refuge, but is in favor of some offshore drilling- if it can be done safely. He will definitely help undo a lot of what Bush was done-

Returning to Don Young’s dubious metaphor of the old ram/young ram with respect to John Boehner….

Boehner is 59 years old. Young is 74 yo.

So who’s the young ram….. and who’s the old goat….. in his metaphor??

Who the eff is knocking who off the hill?

I’m really, really confused… It sounds like Young is the victorious old goat with the limp who keeps whipping the young rams…..but , but…the old goat actually got his a** whipped and now he says he’s going to get his second wind, “going to go back and kick their a**,” and presumably round up all the eager does….. See the dilemma here?? It’s killing me. I can’t figure out who’s getting knocked off the hill, whose a** is getting kicked, and who’s fiddlin’ with the does while all the rams are rutting around on the hill. Is it Capitol Hill? Or just a generic metaphorical hill? Are the “puffed up horns” phallic symbols? Or just regular horny horns? Do rams actually have asses that can be kicked or just rumps…or hinds? No…hinds are does. Sigh.

The old goat talks jabberwocky. Too long in Washington. Throw the bum out, fer cryin’ out loud!
