Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Levi Johnston’s Mother is Arrested – Updated

If anyone is still bothering to watch reality TV, or soap operas, I really don’t know why. Quit wasting your precious time, and tune in to real life in Alaska. It’s far more dramatic and compelling, and you’ll get a lot more bang for your entertainment buck.

Ready for this one? Sherry Johnston, mother of Levi Johnston, (boyfriend of Bristol Palin and soon to be father of her child), has been arrested on six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Troopers served the warrant at Johnston’s home at the “conclusion of an undercover narcotics investigation,” said a statement issued Thursday by the troopers as part of the normal daily summary of activity around the state.

Troopers charged Johnston with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance — generally manufacturing or delivering drugs — as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.

Troopers released no other information, including the kind or amount of drugs, because details could jeopardize an ongoing investigation, spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

Asked how long the investigation had proceeded before Johnston’s arrest, Peters would only say “a while.”

The Palmer District Attorney’s office had no comment.

Sherry Johnston was arrested around noon and booked at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility, according to a booking officer there. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond just after 2 p.m.

No charging documents had been filed at Palmer courthouse by the end of the day, a clerk said.

Levi Johnston sat with Bristol and the rest of the Palin family in St. Paul, Minn., during Gov. Palin’s speech to the Republican National Convention, and he joined the family on the stage afterwards.

When asked about the arrest, Palin’s spokesman, Bill McAllister, issued the following statement by e-mail: “This is not a state government matter. Therefore the governor’s communications staff will not be providing comment or scheduling interview opportunities.”

I’m sure they won’t. They’re not going to touch this one with a ten foot pole. Answering questions about whether your pregnant daughter was hanging out in a crack house, or a meth lab is not on anyone’s list of things they want to do today. And the fact that this arrest comes just two days before Bristol’s stated due date just adds a whole other layer of unbelievability.

We last heard from Sherry Johnston, back when Levi joined the Palins on the campaign trail. At that time,

Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it is difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy; having the entire nation watching makes it worse.

Levi Johnston, a hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-09, and his mother wouldn’t say if he graduated. She said simply he’s no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.

The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.

“This is out of my league,” Sherry Johnston said. “I’m just a country gal, and I want to keep it that way.”

Well, gee then, it probably would have been a good idea not to be cookin’ up drugs in your house. Just sayin’.

OK, everybody, all together now. You can’t make this stuff up.

UPDATE: Just announced that the drug involved in the charges is Oxycontin.  Read the full story HERE.

Will SP issue a Governor’s pardon just like Chimpy on his way out of the WH ?? OR, will SP find a way to barter some of Sherry Johnston’s stash for another wardrobe from Neiman Marcus ?? ( I know that’s snarky but it goes in the same vein with SP’s extended family news from Alaska….)

OT – on the many days of xmas, did Palin go to 5 colleges or 6? I had always thought it was 6.

But back to Sherry Johnston… does delivering mean they caught her dealing or just that she had too much in her possession for “personal use”? Again, a Palin family situation in which the guv’s office says something opposite of how they approached the Wooten matter. Double-standards must be the convenience of choice.

Five. My understanding is that it was either manufacturing or dealing…or both, I suppose. AKM

Yes, we do indeed have a family of Wasilla hillbillies!

Such a sterling example of religious-right, fundamentalist family values. Alaska, this is what you chose to lead you? McCain, this is what you hold to be worthy of leading this country? Republicans, this is what you consider to be the perfect representative of your party? Really??

To her it was terrible that Obama and Ayers were appointed to a board for a nonprofit. To her it was terrible that Obama attended a campaign info meeting hosted by Ayers. This meant Obama was a terrorist and supported terrorism.

I guess with your daughter visiting the home of a drug dealer/manufacturer, with the drug dealer/manufacturer being your daughter’s future mother-in-law there must be some link. I’m sure the Palins (SP and Todd) visited Ms. Johnston’s home on more than one occasion. Based on SP’s logic, that MUST mean that SP and Todd are either drug users of dealers themselves.

The logic applied to Obama can be used regarding SP and Todd. If she doesn’t like that same logic applied to herself, I would “respectfully” suggest that she publicly admit that she was incorrect during the campaign and make an apology in MSM both verbally and in writing. Otherwise the suspicious links are way too close.

I keep watching for the diversionary tactic/”reason” for there to ultimately be no Bristol/Levi baby. I still cannot shake the feeling that those kids were used, and that this is one heck of a cynical farce. If Bristol is said to have “miscarried”, and charges against Levi’s mom are dropped…. ???

Well, as ridiculous as those thoughts would be to me under nearly any other circumstances, I just can’t seem to shake the sense that we’re about to see something that absurd.

And please, let me also state right now that my heart goes out to those kids – all of them. As my grandparents used to say, “Those chilluns needed raisin’.” Sadly, it doesn’t seem that either the Palin or Johnston kids got any.

I used to emphasize to our children/high schoolers I coached that the law makes little distinction between those who break drug/alcohol laws and those who are with those who are arrested for drug/alcohol use. We make about the same amount of income as the rest of the average joes in America, but pay twice the expenses. It is NOT Wasilla. The Valley (Wasilla, Palmer, and surrounding area) was once a nice little farming area with quaint towns…now a suburb of Anchorage, is called the Meth Capitol and the right wing evangelical capitol. Not representative of the Alaskan communities I am familiar with. I know, also, some very nice, progressive people, and those that are non-political who live in The Valley. Just wondering…are there any connections between using meth during pregnancy and Down’s?

I copied this out of one of my old pathology texts. I’m fairly certain that use of methamphetamine during pregnancy won’t be a causative factor for trisomy (Down syndrome), but could lead to other birth defects.

“As mentioned earlier, the most common cause of trisomy, and therefore of Down syndrome, is meiotic nondisjunction. The parents of such children have a normal karyotype and are normal in all respects. Maternal age has a strong influence on the incidence of Down syndrome. It occurs in 1 in 1550 live births in women younger than 20 years, in contrast to 1 in 25 live births in women older than 45 years. The correlation with maternal age suggests that in most cases the meiotic nondisjunction of chromosome 21 occurs in the ovum. ”

Be of good cheer and twinge-free, mwThatOne; I don’t recall ever reading in any Mudflat’s comments that all of AK was ditzy or corrupt, or that all of any town or area was corrupt. Alaskans themselves have named the Valley the Meth Center and evangelical hotbed. Hmmmmm…well, if that were even possible, I imagine all the decent people would jump ship leaving, perhaps, a relatively small population to carry on the evil. Although there has been considerable activism recently in AK, it’s still a drop in the bucket compared to a state in the lower 48. Political outcry is the answer; fan that good twinge into a righteous fury, and direct it at your politicians.

Melangell–Nothing at all unusual about a $5000 bond in my neck of the woods–in fact, that would be quite high for a person with no adult criminal record, if that’s the case (at arraignment there would certainly be mention of whether there’s a record or not, because that’s a critical factor in setting the amount likely to ensure future appearances). Bond is set at an amount designed to ensure appearance at future court proceedings, and a person with no record and with strong ties to the community (please fill in your own joke here, about her immediate community and/or ties) generally is not going to be required to post a high bond. It’s not clear to me, by the way, whether the $5000 is the cash-option of (generally) one-tenth of the bail amount (thus, a bail might be set at $50,000 with a $5,000 cash alternative, putting the bondee on the hook for the full amount if there’s a failure to appear), which would mean there was an incfredibly high bond set for this kind of case, or whether it was a straight $5,000 with no cash alternative and she put up the whole thing.

P.S. on above post: the defendant’s resources also make a difference in setting bail: the amount is supposed to be enough to ensure appearance but also within reach, so a person without a significant criminal record and without a lot of resources is not likely to get an outlandishly high bail figure.

A little OT, but in my district, even first-degree murder is a bailable charge. Amazes me every time, because we have a mandatory life sentence upon conviction, and that seems a pretty good disincentive to appear for one’s trial.

Fear not Alaskans last I checked Pacific county Washington was the official meth capital of the US followed closley by Cowlitz county. Meth is, unfortunatley very common in rural communities and small town. We have never been a law abiding lot in general we don’t like the government a bunch so what they think we should do means very little. The most common professions for meth use are truck driver and fisherman who make a living staying awake for long periods of time.
I have known more than my fair share of meth users, most have seemed to get into it in their 40s and it takes them for a ride right over a cliff.
Does meth cause downs syndrome? No it does not. They have yet to really identify all of the birth defects caused by meth but sucking and swallowing problems the inability of children to drink without getting it into their lungs.
Do meth users speak in incomplete sentences? Yes, most often when they are high it can be diffacult to understand them because they will change topic in mid sentence. They also tend to unbearably perky and full of energy when high. Meth is so addictive because it is works as the nuculer bomb if antidepressants. It goes in and blows up the endorphin centers of the brain releasing tons of endorphins at once but destroying the area so it cannot create more.

Where there’s a search warrant, there was an affidavit to support it, and all the details should be available when the affidavit becomes public. WASILLA — Wasilla resident Sherry L. Johnston, the mother of Bristol Palin’s fiance, faces a Jan. 6 court date for an oxycontin-related arrest at her home Thursday by Alaska State Troopers.

Little additional information was available Friday on the case as authorities remained unusually tight-lipped about details. But Palmer court records listed her scheduled court date and a troopers spokeswoman said in a release late Friday afternoon that the charges “are in relation to the drug oxycontin.”

Tafficking in illegal oxyContin is mandatory 20 years if death or injury is involved. Here’s background on the stuff.

“The introduction of higher strength preparations in 1995 resulted in increasing patterns of abuse. Unlike Percocet, whose potential for abuse is somewhat limited by the presence of paracetamol (acetaminophen), OxyContin and other extended release preparations contain mainly oxycodone. Abusers crush the tablets to break the time-release coating and then ingest the resulting powder orally, intra-nasally, rectally, or by injection. Research has shown that the brains of adolescent mice, which were exposed to OxyContin, can sustain lifelong and permanent changes in their reward system. It is notable that the vast majority of OxyContin related deaths are attributed to ingesting substantial quantities of oxycodone in combination with another depressant of the central nervous system such as alcohol, barbiturates and related drugs.”

When you are raised in a dysfunctional family, the problem is that you HAVE NO ROLE MODEL for what is correct behavior.

And look at the role model Sarah has been to her children. She has shown them that it is of to lie, cheat and steal to get what you want. Not my idea of a good role model.

I think there is a distinct possibility this is Palin’s doing. I can’t imagine the State Troopers didn’t apprise her of the situation and the timing is certainly curious.

I disagree with you totally. Sarah Palin is the State Trooper’s least favorite person in the world. They are under no obligation to inform her when they make an arrest and I doubt they did this time. I’m thinking that they were glad to arrest Levi’s mom, thinking that “payback’s a b|tch”.

Well, I’m not surprised at any of this. Sad, sickened, sorry….just not surprised.

I don’t see the fascination with this drug – I have had to take it off and on, especially during chemo, but the only thing it seemed to do for me was to make me constipated – and it worked really good for that – really good. :-(

Life must be awfully boring where she lives – that’s the only thing I can deduce from this bruhaha…

Miss Sarah’s frenetic energy levels and disjointed communication style and total lack of self-reflection my indicate a mental disorder (eg bipolar) but may also be symptoms of some sort of illegal self-medication on drugs . . . older video clips of when she was running for governor do not exhibit the same level of verbal incoherence (altho she still didn’t say much that was substantive, she did manage to say insubstantive stuff rather more coherently).

I have thought ever since Trig was born that her energy levels for a new mother in her mid-forties with other dependent children were suspiciously off the charts . . .

The Alaskan budget appears to be based on the same mechanics as the Federal budget and most, if not all states. The Govornor proposes a budget which is a starting point and the state legislature is free to accept it as if (which never happens), basicly ignore it and do their own thing or more commonly use it as a starting to point. How close the legislature feels the need to stick with the proposed budget depends on whether the same political parties control both branches and how popular the Govornor and her policies are. I gather the Legislature was not impressed with Palin’s budget and will probably largely ignore it, if she does come up with something more plausible.
