Palin and Her Understanding of Senatorial Succession. “A Little Odd.”
As another post-holiday afternoon rolls by, I feel like so many others at this time of year. Out with the old, in with the new. Clean off my desk. Get rid of unwanted and not needed stuff.
Along with that comes all those things that have been bouncing around in my brain for the past week and a half, that I never had time to get out. And as this blog started to allow me to get stuff out of my head, I need to clean up a few things. So, they may be old news, and I may be the last to talk about them, but my brain will feel cleaner. And that’s a good thing.
Waaay back on December 22nd, my favorite conservative website “Human Events” had an interview with Sarah Palin. It wasn’t particularly remarkable for the most part. While reading through it, you could tell that some editor had removed most of the quirky syntax, and goofy grammar that makes interviews with our Governor so much fun.
But, there was one thing that was left in, that really blew my mind. I know that Mudflats readers, in general, are pretty savvy about Alaska politics, especially if they’ve been reading for a while. So see if you can find the mistake. Here’s the exchange between Palin and Human Events political editor John Gizzi.
GIZZI: You made it clearin our interviews earlier this year that you were not close to fellow Republicans Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young from your state, both of whom you said had a different vision of Alaska’s dealings with the federal government than you did. Were you pleased with the election of Democrat Mark Begich who defeated Stevens and with the re-election of Rep. Young?
PALIN:I met yesterday with Sen.-elect Begich to see that we are on the same page as we move forward as he starts his new job representing Alaska.
I thought that Sen. Stevens was going to be re-elected, and it was so close, and that if he were to step aside because he was convicted [on corruption charges], then I would get to appoint a Republican. So I was kind of surprised at the outcome there.
It is what it is, and I wish Sen. Begich well. We’ll work well together. He’s going to be in the majority party and that’s all the more reason for Mark Begich and me to work closely together. We will.
Did you get it? It’s in the second paragraph of her answer; “then I would get to appointa Republican.” Wha…? Wh-wha…? After a double and triple take, and a couple rereadings of her answer, I still couldn’t believe it.
If you didn’t get it, I’ll remind you of the background. And keep in mind while I recount, that Sarah Palin was Frank Murkowski’s immediate successor. She ran for Lt. Governor in 2002 when all this started. She was not living in the woods, subsistence hunting, and cut off from civilization.
Once upon a time Alaska had a Senator named Frank Murkowski. He and Ted Stevens were Alaska’s senators for a long, long time. Then, Murkowski decided that he was going to run for governor. So he ran, and he won. Now came the question of who would succeed Frank in his Senate seat. All the Republicans in the state who felt they were qualified, puffed up their chests, and preened their feathers, and paraded themselves in front of the Senator-now-Governor hoping to be “the chosen one.” This was one of the big power seats in the state, and they don’t come open that often.
And finally, after reviewing the candidates, he made his decision. Frank chose his daughter, Lisa Murkowski to fill his seat. She was a state representative at the time, and Frank decided to hand the crown to the next generation. Everyone who wasn’t Lisa Murkowski went ballistic. There was hand-wringing, gnashing of teeth, kicking of dogs, and Republicans and Democrats alike across the state were seeing red. It was a huge, big, fat, major deal.
Then, Alaska’s other senator, Ted Stevens, began to muse aloud about how he was getting on in years, and just might think about stepping down from his seat, and handing the reins over to someone younger, someone with fresh, new ideas, someone like….his son, state senator Ben Stevens. Uh oh.
We saw the writing on the wall. And to make a very long story short, the issue made it to the ballot. Should Alaskans continue to allow Senators to appoint their replacements, thereby assuring the continuity of representation in the Senate? Or should voters hold a special election, foregoing the continuity, in favor of keeping control over who actually gets the seat.
The special election won hands down. The governor was stripped of the power of appointment. And during the same election that this ballot measure passed, Lisa Murkowski was re-elected to the seat. Go figure. But nonetheless, the law was writ, and everybody who wasn’t living in a cave knew it.
Apparently Sarah Palin was living in a cave, because she just told the planet how bummed she was that Ted Stevens didn’t win, and then get convicted, so she could appoint a Republican to his seat.
Shortly after Palin’s Human Events interview was released, Shannyn Moore talked to Senator Elect Mark Begich on Air America. She asked him what he thought of her misperception, and complete lack of understanding about what she does and does not have the power to do.
King of the diplomatic understatement, Begich said he was “a little surprised” when he read it. He went on to say, “You and I both know, as do thousands of people who voted. I don’t know what that all meant. It was a little odd.”
I’ll tell you what it all meant. It meant that Sarah Palin has not been paying attention to some incredibly basic aspects of Alaska government, and hasn’t been since at least 2002 when Murkowski the Younger was appointed to the Senate. She also wasn’t paying attention in 2004, when the law was changed. She also wasn’t paying attention in 2008 when every national news media was asking whether she had the power to appoint, and the answer was no.

I’m under pressure to spot the mistake. Yikes!
“She was not living in the woods, subsistence hunting, and cut off from civilization.”
Yeah, but she was “Living in her own private Idaho!”
Yep, even I knew that she couldn’t appoint a Senator.
JAYSUS!
Her photo should be hidden among the hazelnuts in the previous post!
Hmm… Palin doesn’t know what a VP does, not all that sure of the President’s role, had to have help with her mayor job, seems to be making it up as she goes with the governorship….
No. Not surprised.
She doesn’t know what a VP does, doesn’t know what a community organizer is, doesn’t know what the tiebreaker in the Senate does, AND DOESN’T EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE DOES AS GOVERNOR!
She needs a good firing. You need to recall/impeach this dipstick. I know people think that vetting document where her IQ was in the 80s was a hoax, but how else do you explain this?
AKM,
Does the winner get a prize?
Holy cow.
That woman is something else. Science should spend some time and brain cells to figure out how a rock and an amoeba managed to mate. There. Also, too.
Can you imagine her within 50 miles of any red buttons? “Oh. Well, I was a little disappointed when it asked me for the president’s eye print and all these heathenish things. I, as the executive, need to be able to execute at will without any of these silly interferences from – who did this anyway? Fire him. Todd? TODD!! Here, Todd!! You fire him. And get this silly button thing repaired.”
I do not even live in Alaska and knew little about your wonderful state until SP oozed onto the scene, and even I knew she could not appoint.
Ditto cagney. I obviously don’t live in Alaska, but just from reading this blog picked up the mistake immediately. Wow, maybe I should run for governor!
I did see it when you mentioned there was something wrong, but have to admit I missed it the first time through. Oh goodness…..
I’m still confused… I keep hearing about Blago in Illinois getting in trouble for trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat, because as Governor Blago has the power to appoint. But Sarah doesn’t?
In many states, including Illinois (and New York), the governor does have the power to appoint someone to a vacated Senate seat. But, for the reasons AKM explained, that power was removed from the governor by the voters of Alaska.
Maybe it’s like the Troopergate thing. She kept insisting that “she didn’t do anything wrong, there.” Maybe she thinks that if she just says it enough (i.e “didn’t do anything wrong,” or “can appoint an empty senate seat”) that she can just will it to be so? Perhaps she meant to just appoint someone and see what happened? See if she’d be challenged?
Or, perhaps I’m just giving her waaaaay to much credit.
BTW, I live in Boston and knew that your state had held a special election to strip the governor of this privilege. Because I read the papers. Not even all of them!
I saw that interview last week and realized the same thing as AKM. I was surprised that SP did not know that she could not appoint a Senator – many blogs pointed that out (due to Alaskan law) – as did the numerous newspapers that SWWNBN reads , “all of them.”
When will the “S.S. Delusion” crash and sink ??
@ Ira2 – Hehheh! You funny!
@ West Virginian – No. You’re apparently intellectually over-qualified.
@ ds55 – Nope. Sarah doesn’t. Not even if she clicks her ruby stilettos and says three times, “There’s no place like Nome…”.
Not no-way, not no-how!
Mr. Whitekeys, where are you????? I hope you’re getting all this down for an all-new smashing, wing-ding Whale Fat Follies in the Sullivan Arena!
Also, too, AKM, I think this new category Numbskullery is going to get really big really fast…
Staggering ignorance of the powers of her own office, let along the office sh sought AND she didn’t answer the question posed. No surprise there.
“she” sought. Perhaps SWWNBN is a better solution, since I at least have to proofread it…
I think Sarah DID know that she could not appoint a Senator; It was basic and common knowledge. I believe she also knew about the Supreme Court case of Exxon Valdez (I saw a not-so-old interview where she commented on that case extensively). Yet, SP did not bring it up when Katie Couric asked her to discuss ANY Supreme Court case. Now I am wondering if SP may have a memory problem or medical problem. I realize this might be giving her the benefit of the doubt, but it is inconceivable to me that she had SOME knowledge and then lost that knowledge. Could be attention deficit disorder, short memory or perhaps she is just totally overwhelmed. It is curious indeed. Medical or not, dangerous for Alaskans and possibly the U.S.
I realize that I’ve missed hearing her silly syntax.
We now know why Katie Kouric was so curious about what, if anything, the Governor reads (short of “the TV Guide”). Not surprisingly, the Campaign folks did not immediately follow up the bungled non answer, by releasing a comprehensive listing of Palin’s favorite reading material.
Basically the only thing that Palin reads, is ” all and everything that is put in front of her”. Not very much.
I also wondered in the same article about her saying that she and Ted Stevens hadn’t been close.
Here’s the quote ” GIZZI: You made it clear in our interviews earlier this year that you were not close to fellow Republicans Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young from your state, both of whom you said had a different vision of Alaska’s dealings with the federal government than you did.”
Since when?? I always thought she and Ted were pretty tight for a while weren’t they??
……..uh……I’ll just go with grossly unqualified……………
No one should be able to “appoint” and elected position anyway @@ What a head trip !
Whatever happened to that little song writen years ago, and so suited to Alaska’s sad excuse for a governor. It was “Bimbo, Bimbo – where you gonna go -ee-o, Bimbo, Bimbo – what you gonna do-ee-o?”
You guys sure know how to elect ‘em – I KNOW you have some really intelligent people up there – I’ve met many of them. So, how come these mental lightweights keep getting elected? Wassup with that???
This reminds me of when judge Glass said she didn’t know if OJ Simpson was ignorant or arrogant but then decided he was a little of both. The assesement would seem to apply to Governor Palin. She also seems just intellectually lazy. How and why do such people get elected?
Maybe some of you have seen the movie Frost/Nixon. I have only seen the trailer where Nixon states: “….if the president does it, it is not illegal”. Maybe that is the mentality we are dealing with here.
AlaskaDisasta – these mental lightweights like Palin and Bush keep on getting elected because the average voter bases the choice on 1) is this someone I can pray with, and 2) is this someone I can have a beer with? Now the real question that should be asked “Is this someone who can walk and chew gum at the same time?” Unfortunately, in most cases of elected officials, the answer will be a resounding “no”.
Oh I’m sure she was dissapointed…we all know dud isn’t a Repub!
And Bristol expecting and all….
couldn’t appoint her!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She is quoted as saying as Mayor of Wasilla, when told her appropriation of 50K without the city council’s approval was illegal…she said” I’m Mayor and I can do as I want until the courts tell me otherwise”….So yes we ARE DEALING with this MENTALITY here!!!!
I really don’t think that sister sarah cares about anything enough to read about it, try to understand it or retained it. People like her think they are always right and would never think that what just came out of their lips could possibly be wrong.
This slightly off topic or may not and I could be wrong but I don’t think so…..
I seem to remember when the shrub counted votes and said he won when I was still able to listen to him …said something like….sometimes I may be wrong but I will always be strong….sound like some one we know…
Great work AKM,,,big fan,,:]
She’s met with her future mom in law for ‘coffee’ a few too many times.
Have any of you come across this wonderful piece of writing (BARF) from our very own Ignorant Conservative Bigot, Ann Coulter. Prepare to have your brains explode allll over your computer screen.
Since we are on the subject of SP’s arrogance & incompetence & the fact that she seems to be completely opposed to doing one single damn thing in Alaska’s favor… can I please get you all to read this?
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/drama_at_dot_roads_to_somewhere
I am completely & utterly infuriated to learn that she is axing desperately needed Dept of Transportation projects that qualify for Federal funding in her selfish quest to promote herself as an energy expert, submitting only those projects that are directly related to the NON-EXISTENT TransCanada Pipeline?????????
And still our spineless legislators support her, at the expense of their constituents, some of them even sending out some pathetic little plea to Obama to give $20 billion of taxpayers’ money for the non-existent pipeline!
Uhm, why in world should we give $20 billion to a CANADIAN COMPANY for a pipeline that will likely never be built by them? And why are our legislators not sending out pleas like those on behalf of local vets, displaced & hard-pressed Native Alaskans, uninsured children & adults of ALaska, etc.?
Is it just me, or have Alaskan politicians completely lost their minds?
I have never, in my nearly 40 years of living in Alaska, seen politics descend into such complete & utter hell in this state.
There is more on this DOT issue in her own words in the full interview I cite above. Check the link. And no, it isn’t just you. AKM
Palin continues to demonstrate to Texans she is a dumba$$.
Appointment is the method of choice for Repulicans seeking long term offices in Alaska. Until this election our entire congressional delegation was intially appointed, not elected. Stevens, Young AND Murkowski the younger. And all Republicans. It must be a bitter pill to swallow now that it is no longer allowed.
Palin = Failin (failing)
It is truly amazing and I am looking forward to hearing her back pedal all over this answer if she is ever called on it. I was living in Minnesota when the whole Murkowski fiasco took place and even 3500 miles away people were talking about the appointment. By the time the people of Alaska recovered from the shock and held a special election, I had moved to Wisconsin, and was now 4000 miles away, and I heard about the results. How is it possible she did not hear about this? During the campaign,( I am now living in Alaska) this very subject was raised in conversations all over the state. I love Alaska, I married an Alaskan, I have lived most of my adult life in Alaska, and I have no idea how this woman was elected. Wow.
Yeah I thought “Uncle Ted” was one of her mentors. I am sooo confused right now. But even I knew that she could not appoint. That came out back before the November election. But then again I became seriously obsessed with Alaska politics. Just today my 5 year old was going on about how she got a moose “pez” dispenser from Alaska for Christmas. And you know Sarah Palin is from Alaska. My husband and I were cringing and waiting for her to come out with one of her favorite lines “Sarah Palin Lies!” since we were having professional pictures taken at the time. And I am guessing that the 5 year old might even be able to tell you what state has which laws. But not gonna swear to that one. But she does listen to NPR with me all the time and LOVES Countdown…she gets mad when Keith Olberman takes a night off I might add
Maybe Sarah had been a little closer to her future in laws and has been helping out in the family business …just a little..
mhrt oregon, “sometimes I may be wrong but I will always be strong” pretty much sums up Shrub’s terms in office. Probably the only thing he can point to is AIDS in Africa as one thing he’s helped besides his cronies.
SP is just wrong, most of the time. And she’s helped her cronies and vice versa. Her term in office can’t be over soon enough and may the IRS and FBI get her for all the crooked things she’s done already.
Ballot Measure 4 passed, Sarah!
http://www.elections.alaska.gov/2004oep/bm/measure_4.pdf
AKM–actually, Lisa was only a state representative at the time of her appointment by Frank to the US Senate seat.
And, as to SWWNBN’s “closeness” to Ted, did AKM not point out many moons ago that she had been on the board of one of his PACs or some such thing like that? So, that wasn’t because they were close, but because why, then?
Wow. Knew that. Fingers weren’t listening to brain, apparently! Thanks.
Yes, Palin was a co-director of Stevens 527 group called, Excellence in Public Service, Inc. from 2003-2005.
AKM
Actually, according to the Alaska statute, she could have made a temporary appointment … but it doesn’t sound like that’s what she meant. However, I’ve also heard that the statute that the legislature passed conflicts with the voter initiative so if this had happened, it probably would have taken a court decision to resolve it. The statute follows:
Sec. 15.40.140. Condition and time of calling special election.
When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or United States representative, the governor shall, by proclamation, call a special election to be held on a date not less than 60, nor more than 90, days after the date the vacancy occurs. However, if the vacancy occurs on a date that is less than 60 days before or is on or after the date of the primary election in the general election year during which a candidate to fill the office is regularly elected, the governor may not call a special election.
Sec. 15.40.145. Temporary appointment of United States senator.
When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator, the governor may, at least five days after the date of the vacancy but within 30 days after the date of the vacancy, appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy temporarily until the results of the special election called to fill the vacancy are certified. If a special election is not called for the reasons set out in AS 15.40.140 , the individual shall fill the vacancy temporarily until the results of the next general election are certified.
The legislature voted in something which allowed a temporary appointment in hopes of negating the ballot initiative, but the Supreme Court ruled that the Legislature’s proposal was not “substantively similar” to the initiative, so the initiative went ahead, and was voted upon. So that’s what stands. No temporary appointment. If she had tried to do it, she would have been swarmed with lawyers like ravens on a dumpster! Never would have been allowed to happen. AKM
@realalaska (23:36:26) :
Yeah, even the Div. of Elections wasn’t sure what would happen if she tried to make a temp. appointment and said it would prob. be sued and sent to the Courts as soon as she tried!
I wondering if she is ADHD, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder.
I am not diagnosing her but just wondering if there is a problem.
And I’m wondering if she had to go off her medicine when she became pregnant and can’t take the meds while breast feeding.
Perhaps that’s why her medical records were not released.
Her speech pattern is not logical and difficult to keep on topic.
She went to 5 different colleges. When she was Mayor, she had to hire a city manager to get the job done.
While she is Gov. she spends an lot of time on other things rather then her job. She travels rather then governs.
Her decisions appear not to be well thought out.
I would never say a person with a disability should not be gov. or even President. Nor am I saying that SP has a disability.
But, something is not right. She is not learning from her errors and is not taking care of matters she was elected to do. She has ethic problems and it looks like your legislators will not hold her accountable.
AKM, did you notice in the Palin interview with Human Events that she stated that the weather was -5 outside? It’s rarely that cold in Juneau, and in fact, the National Weather Service documents that it’s been in the 20s all week in Juneau. Yet the Human Events writer claims that the interview took place in Palin’s Juneau office. You and I know that she does not work out of Juneau, that she works out of Wasilla and Anchorage and charges the citizens of Alaska a per diem fee for working at home.
Good catch! AKM
@alaskan4alaska(21:44:43) :
Who was Frank appointed to replace? I think Stevens replaced Bob Bartlett and Young got appointed to Nick Begich’s seat, after his plane disappeared. Didn’t realize that Frank the Bank was also appointed…
Oh, wait, found something on Wiki:
1980 race for U.S. Senate
Frank Murkowski (R), 54%
Clark Gruening (D), 46%
There’s the Republican swing after the pipeline construction brought so many southerners up here.
___
On all of the questions about how Sarah got elected, here’s the election results from Wiki. It was a three-way race.
2006 race for Governor, general
Sarah Palin (R), 48%
Tony Knowles (D), 41%
Andrew Halcro (I), 9%
—
@Diane(23:54:44) : I wondering if she is ADHD, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder.
***
I’ve wondered that, too. The McCain campaign people complained that they couldn’t get her to sit still and do her homework. She’s a really high-energy person, but she’s a runner and she’s in really good condition.
—
I just found an interesting bit of trivia: Tony Knowles has an economics degree from Yale. He was a frat brother of Shrub’s (Geo. W. Bush). The economics degree was a surprise, because when Knowles boomed up here to work the pipeline, he roughnecked on drilling rigs on the Slope and out in the Inlet. I don’t know of any other guys on drill rigs with degrees from Yale, although all of the roughnecks I know personally are bright and well-read.
It’s going to hit -50F. in the upper Yukon Valley by mid-week. Brrr!
And during the same election that this ballot measure passed, Lisa Murkowski was re-elected to the seat.
This is slightly OT, but technically, Lisa Murkowski was not re-elected to the U.S. Senate seat. To be re-elected, presumably one is first actually elected. In 2004, she stood for election to that office for the first time (as an appointed incumbent.) While the voters returned her to the seat, that’s not quite the same as re-election. She’ll have her first real opportunity for that in 2010. At least, that’s how I see it.
32 below in our neck of the woods tonight. Cheers!
Oops, sorry about the italics tagging mistake. Was just trying to get the first line.
SMR (21:32:41) : Is it just me, or have Alaskan politicians completely lost their minds?
I have never, in my nearly 40 years of living in Alaska, seen politics descend into such complete & utter hell in this state.
It’s the ol’ trickle-down effect: The attitude, personality, and work/personal ethic in the leader of any group (CEO, Prez, Gov) affects everyone under him/her. They start thinking and acting like the leader. It’s human nature.
The only way you will turn things around in Alaska is to get rid of SP, as quickly as possible. Don’t wait for the next election; she can do enormous, possibly irreparable damage to Alaska in the time she has left. Of course, since she affects the legislature, they will be rudderless and without focus…it will be impossible to get them to impeach her. Your best bet is to recall her.
First time commenting for me. I have been reading however for months and as the new year grows near this website gives me so much hope as did the 08 election that there are so many honest and good people keeping an eye on the officials that abuse their power. Thanks all you mudflatters for being a part of that hope!!!! Oversight and speaking truth to power has returned!!! I may live in Iowa but part of my heart is in Alaska!!!
Now seems like a perfect time to ask, “Hey Alaskans, how is that Governor recall effort going?”
not close to Stevens?
” Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens. ”
huh?
No, no, no…this can’t be true. The SP calendar is tops on Amazon & there are all sorts of 5 star reviews….for a calendar?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/26/sarah-palin-2009-calendar_n_153634.html
Caught her wishful thinking in the blog, rolled my eyes and then realized with her track record she would definately try to appoint someone and be damned the lawsuits. That is how she rolls.
Loved the part how she threw Ted so far under the bus that he could read the tire manufacturers logo. I was hoping Ted would be elected and then removed from office so I could appoint someone! Wow what a great friend! LMAO Bullpucky she was not close with Ted or Don Young I too have read articles where she states these men were mentors.
My last thought I had after yesterdays blog and todays is to make sure I write to my own state senators and the Obama website, to make it clear I do not want any of my federal tax dollars to go to any pipeline project in Alaska! None period! Another SP project to Nowhere.
phoebe: The calendar is getting five star reviews because it actually has all 12 months and the days are correct for 2009.
A little arm chair psychology from me. When you tell lies regularly, your brain gets “tangled” in what’s true and what’s not true. It has to work extra hard at keeping everything sorted. Ask anyone who’s ever lived with PTS. There’s the reality of day to day life; then there are the memories; then there is the constant work of numbing of the memories (“Oh, yeah, Vietnam wasn’t that bad if you were tough like me.”). That’s why PTS people break down. Their brains just can’t keep juggling all the different levels of truth and fiction.
Sarah reminds me of that. She lives in so many dream worlds of her own making. Remember this is the woman who believed she was QUALIFIED to be VP of this country. And that belief was not based on facts or intelligence but on nothing more than her desire.
So when your brain is as busy juggling stuff as hers is– managing the lies, halftruths, shifts in loyality, spin work– yep, lapses happen. Like someone above said, Palin knows these answers– she just has her “senior” moments of saying what she hopes is true rather than what IS TRUE.
That’s my theory. And I do hope the whole constructed mess that is SP crashes soon. . . For those of you who haven’t yet checked out http://www.palindeception.com you may find it particularly interesting right now.
Proud Community OrganizerWA wrotes: “phoebe: The calendar is getting five star reviews because it actually has all 12 months and the days are correct for 2009.”
————————————————————
I’m thinking it’s getting those reviews based mostly on sales…which means there are a lot of snarky folks out there who gave those calendars to friends and relatives as joke gifts. . . that’s like a friend sending me a Thanksgiving Card from the White House – picture of GW and Laura, with the caption; “This year, there are a lot of things to be thankful for. . . ” Open the card and the caption continues. . .”Like I won’t be in the White House next year!” As for having all the months and days correct in the calendar, the real question would be “are they in the right order?”
The reason so many calenders are being sold can be summed up in 2 words -”gag gift”…..I spent x-mas at the family ranch and had to listen to racist , hateful , ignorant tripe from immediate family members ……at gift time I was given a great Obama calender……..in front of children – the tripe continued……..my favorite lame statement was”Michelle is the dangerous one “………when I asked if anybody thought Sarah was qualified …….the guys said “she’s hot”…….gals said “she’s a good mom”……..SIGH……..since ya can’t pick family – ya have to tolerate ‘em !! Anyway – I bet that most of the sales were gag gifts…….
AustinTx, I agree. And the emphasis would be on “gag”. If anyone had given me an SP calendar, the dart board would have had a new “face”.
Is there any way you can find a new family, austintx?
CNN must be clearing their head too. I fell asleep with the TV on and woke up to see and hear that obnoxious GASH spouting her also and too speak all over my poor sleeping brain. Curse you Blitzer.
She will be making the rounds on all the 2008 year end specials as we collectively clear the cobwebs. So many clips and video’s to pick from.
Please may I request some Yellow Earplugs be added to the Mud Gear for sale? OH and a Yellow TV brick made in the shape of some nice Yellow boots.
My 24yr. old daughter who lives in Boulder WILL NOT even speak to “those red-neck dumd-f**ks”………..
austin & grey
re: Sarah’s calendar
I read a few of the reviews & sadly think the buyers like her….really really like her……constant vigilance is needed…never underestimate FOS’s (Friends of Sarah).
Regarding Sarah’s remarks about Ted. Not only was she incorrect, but what a brainless political move.
SillyWhabbit – wait until you open your Sunday paper and see who is on the cover of Parade magazine……..not a nice way to start the day………
Greydog & Austintx:
I think you are right, gag gifts for people who hate her, but also lets not forget her ever faithful, teamsarah and the other ilk…lipstick on dogs whatever (rolls eyes) They would be buying them by the case just to push up sales!
Ok gang I went to Amazon and read the reviews and yes the new ones all tout how great these are for gag gifts! LMAO
My favorite review posted stated that it is not only a calendar but an idiot detector also! LOL Hang it up and if someone says what a great gal, or she is wonderful, you will know that there will be no intelligent conversation with that person! ROFLMAO
Several were buying them for dart boards, coloring books for the children (you know to draw in dead moose and dismembered turkeys), Toilet Paper tho one guy decided it was too much of a risk as he might end up with hemorrhoids if he uses it.
Many were disappointed that she was not wearing high heels and a thong, naked etc….
OMG I am laughing so hard I can’t get my breath and tears are blocking my vision.
It astounds that SP has not been outed as a complete impostor of a human… It seems the more she tries to get her mug plastered on the front pages of the daily papers everywhere, the dumber she seems to get!
I’m wondering if she still takes her queues from one of McSame’s aides OR have the fumes from her mates “snow machine” finally gotten to her brain-housing-group???
Hopefully, next spring when Alaskans have thawed out, they and the rest of reality will come home to roost and SP gets to go the same way as Blago in Illinois… OUT!
apparently those folks in Texas don’t realize Alaskan’s mostly despise Texans.. apparently they haven’t heard Alaskan Texan jokes.. (so who is the fool?) I’m just making the point and not trying to offend.. the Gov has short term memory issues..
wow, first of all …how long is that goofy b*** going to be your governor?…..sigh*…I’d like to see her go along with our governor ‘Good Hair’ Perry…
and as for the comment before mine….ya’ll hate us texans?…????? well…f***! I didn’t know that…we hate philadelphia, washington, new york, pittsburgh, and any city that has a nfl team that kicks our ass..which is about most cities these days..so until ya’ll get a nfl team that kicks out ass too, you remain on our ‘your ok’ list.
SP went into labor in Texas.. concealed her labor to flight crews when she delivered in Alaska Todd said we weren’t going to have our baby in TEXAS.. the palins don’t like Texas…
No offense taken – careful when you use plurality in describing people from a specific place……..because right now when people think Alaska……..they think Sarah Palin……just sayin’
Lucky me…I don’t get the Sunday Paper.
Sarah defintely has “selective amnesia”………
There’s even better news now….she has been voted Gallop’s # 2 most admired person of the year….how I will never know… name recognition maybe??
That’s female of course….sorry I should have put that in there.
Male of course was our own PE Obama
There are red necks & religious right wing nuts everywhere. I live in Northern Calif & we have our share. It’s too bad we can’t corral them somewhere so we could keep a collective eye on them. Kind of like a benevolent Big Brother. Just an idea.
PS Austin….just got back from Texas & loved the place & people…..even better weather than “sunny Calif”.
@ Austin… I had a cousin tell me Christmas morning that PE BO wasn’t even born in the US so he couldn’t even take office…so I have it too… said he didn’t even have an original birth certificate…so I asked him if he did… he said well yeah. I said no you don’t. No one has the original…those are kept at the state .. you have a copy…. don’t think he believed me… I called him a right wing nut job… he didn’t like that but if the shoe fits…lol but you are welcome to join my family… we only have one or two that get a little crazy now and then….lol
AKM, I did a little NOAA research…
In that interview between Palin and Human Events political editor John Gizzi on December 12, 2008:
the temperature in Juneau was 32d.F. in the daytime on December 12th, according to NOAA, and in Anchorage, same day & time of day, 13d.F.
-5d.F. is 18d.F. COLDER than that Anchorage temperature.
Makes you wonder just where Sarah Palin was when she conducted that interview….
Wasilla is often colder than Anchorage. It was about -5F that day. That’s my guess. AKM
Where’s the baby? Time for the ever-obliging Dr. Baldwin-Johnson to induce?
She was using poetic license to make it sound good….lol Wanted people to feel sorry for her cause it’s so cold in Alaska and she is so tough she can take it.
Phoebe – there was an article in the Fri. NYT about the island in Hawaii – Molokai – on the western end of the island is the remnants of the infamous leper colony…….the lepers were taken by boat and literally thrown into the ocean and told to swim ashore and that would be their new home…..a horrible chapter in the history of Hawaii….none the less……..kind of gets ya thinkin’………great read…….ck. it out…..in the Escapes section .
I just thought your pro palin relatives might find it interesting that Mr and Mrs. Gov. would risk her and her baby’s health to avoid having a child born in Texas.. I’m sure the comments were in the local press…
austin
thanks…will do. We have relatives that have lived in Kauai for about 25 years. We’ve visited many times & I’ve always wondered about the lepers on Molokai. You can see Molokai from Kauai…..just like you can see Russia from Alaska. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Wasn’t it Father Damian who headed the leper colony on Moloki – administering to their health as well as ministering to their spirits? He also did of leprosy and is buried on the island alongside his parishioners. “What greater gift. . . ” There are a lot of such instances in which superstitions wreck havoc on people. . . and where seeing the human in humanity has overcome that havoc. . .
Should read” he died” . . . going back to my gardening.
Phoebe – the part about the colony is at the end of the article….I don’t know of an island big enough for all the wing-nuts……or a boat big enough to get ‘em there……oh wait !!……they can all go on board the “S.S. Delusion” and Sarah can be the queen !! …..all aboard !!
In a way, it’s too bad Sarah’s scenario did NOT play out. Maybe, if she had ignored State law and attempted to appoint a Republican, Alaskans would have been unable to overlook something so egregious and would’ve finally been able to get rid of her. I’m wondering what it WILL take?
Greytdog – yes – and the good father is up to be canonized next year !!!
The rules do not apply to her highness. Have you all forgotten her statement when she was called on the carpet for misappropriation of city funds to redecorate the Mayor’s (of Wasilla) office?
“I’m the mayor. I can do what I want until the courts tell me otherwise.”
or words to that effect.
Why is everyone so surprised?
she is the Queen. All bow down before her.
Could be attention deficit disorder, short memory or perhaps she is just totally overwhelmed. It is curious indeed. Medical or not, dangerous for Alaskans and possibly the U.S.
Now that makes sense. She really does show symptoms of ADD. On the other hand she also shows symptoms of being bi-polar. Perhaps she’s both.
Is it really so odd? This coming from a woman who, by her own admission – did things “her” way as Mayor of Wasilla, with disregard at times of the proper procedure, protocol or rules and regs in place.
Nope…not odd, just par for the course. She’s a Maverick, ya know!;-)
The Sarah Palin calendar comes with a pile of old shoes – great target practice should the Bush Buffoon ever drop by for an inarticulate conversation.
FOS’s: Friends of Sarah or Full of Sh!t
Proud Community OrganizerWA (07:42:30) :
phoebe: The calendar is getting five star reviews because it actually has all 12 months and the days are correct for 2009.
Thank heavens for that unrecognized and unthanked proof reader at the calendar factory.
Sarah had originally inserted a 29th day in February, and double-dipped to have back-to-back November 15ths (Sadie Hawkins Day).
The Palins put the calendar out for printing prior to Sherry Johnston being charged for drug distribution, and the family figured at that time that the Bristol/Levi nuptials needed all of the nudging that they could give it.
Levi got away scot-free last Sadie Hawkins Day (Todd misplaced his shotgun), but there is no way that the First Family is gonna allow Bristol to continue to be milked through a fence through all of 2009.
Austin
Interesting read. Prejudices can be scary. I know in Kauai there is a section of the island reserved for native Hawaiians, but there is lots of violence & problems. Locals are being crowded out by tourism & corporate money. I’m sure the same is true in Alaska. Sarah is robbing the place of its goodness & spirit for her own personal gain.
katiebegood – I know a woman very well that is bi-polar and if she does not take her meds on time and every time – she loses her faculties quickly……….also there can be unbelievable meltdowns that include vicious verbal assaults on anyone….including kids……..has anyone seen an outbuurst from Sarah ??
Does she think that she is like the governor of Illinois? She is certainly as audacious as he is. She is certainly an enigma. I believe she knows this law. She is just choosing to ignore it. She does this in interviews either (a) when it suits her, and (b) when she is playing dumb because she has her mind on others things and isn’t really listening to the interviewer.
Halcrow
LOL…I guess nothing is ever straight forward in the lives of those wild & crazy Palin’s…..maybe that’s why she appears so addle brained all the time….or maybe it’s the “coffee”. Years ago there was a skit on the Smothers Brothers Show called “Share a Little Tea with Goldie”…Goldie was stoned. Maybe for a new career direction Sarah could have a TV show….Share A Little “Coffee” with Sarah & the first guest … Sherry Johnston.
I think she knows she cannot appoint and just doesn’t care. Remember her Mayoral line ( summarized here) that she will do whatever she wants until a court/judge tells her not to?
It’s worked pretty well for her so far and what’s she go to lose by trying.
“Better to ask forgiveness than beg permission.”
Of course I don’t agree with doing that, but I think it’s part of her sel-delusion that she does not have to follow the rules other do. At RNC she was told to spend about $25,000 and ended up buying Todd silk underwear. The donor was “shocked” when he got his credit card bill but a little to late to unring her bell.
This a very sick woman and getting worse due to the high level of publicity and her loss as VP which promises diminishing spotlight for her narcissism.
With Sherry Johnson arrest I but Palin is ready to implode/explode–having someone embarass her, AND her daughter publically. Remember how p.o.’d she got at Wooten. Sherry is likely #1 on Palin’s revenge list now
Sarah’s trajectory is on the down side of the curve now……..pfffft……..crash…….burn……..another one bites the dust !!!!
@ Liz P.
With Sherry Johnson arrest I but Palin is ready to implode/explode–having someone embarass her, AND her daughter publically.
I can not imagine any action which anyone could ever do that would be more embarrassing than having mommie dearest “out” Bristol’s pregnancy and upcoming wedding on national and international TV.
Of course, Sarah blew that, too, as neither the baby nor the wedding seem to be any more than a figment of mom’s imagination. Maybe Pastor Muthee “prayed” the baby away?
Halcrow – You are spot on about the mommie dearest aspect of this saga…….thats why the karma crash is gonna be spectacular……..
whats the diffrence between an appointment and a special election?
In an election the people have actual responsibilities.
Once again, Sarah P shows the world how narrow her world view is. Can she really see Russia from her house…of course she reads magazines and newspapers in Alaska…oops, well if she was reading or listening or even vaguely paying attention (oh my, remember the pardoning of the turkey episode)…I guess she’s just plain oblivious to the goings on in Alaska and the world…and there’s talk about her for the 2012 race, she’s the #2 most admired woman for 2008? This world is really NUTS!
The seeing Russia claim from her house is wrong…….the only place in AK. that you can actually see Russia is a poor as dirt village……..the people there are on record saying they have never seen Sarah Palin. ever.
austintx–you’d be welcome tocome join my family; we’re all reasonable people with the correct outlook on life and politics! And we even have a realtive or two in TX like you, stuck inside an otherwise rightwing family. Hey, are you actually related to me?
Thank you for the invite !! My 24 yr.old daughter lives in Boulder, Co. and denies the very exsistence of “the rotten limb on the family tree” She can be most eloquent and vicious in 30 seconds flat…….it’s best I don’t ask her to please attend.
austintx–Hm, do you already have relatives in AK too?
No – just my fellow mudpuppies…….
Greta article and very good comments. Kudos to the author for the category “numbskullery.” I’m still chuckling over that one. Is it reserved for the Governor?
http://intelligence.typepad.com
“While reading through it, you could tell that some editor had removed most of the quirky syntax, and goofy grammar that makes interviews with our Governor so much fun.”
OH, that’s why I was so sad after reading it!
