Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Sarah Palin Busted by Weather Underground?

thermometer

It’s a lazy slow news day here in Anchorage. Seems like a good morning to have a bit of sleuthing fun. A reader familiar with Juneau had noticed something unusual in the recent Human Events interview with Sarah Palin. I was so focused on the fact that apparently our Governor thought she’d be able to appoint a replacement to Ted Stevens’ senate seat, bypassing that pesky law that calls for a special election, that I missed another interesting point…

Let’s play, “Can You Spot the Dubious Claim?” Here’s the passage:

Veteran Republican political consultant Holly Robichaud, who had arranged the first “Veepstakes” interview between Palin and Gizzi, set up their latest exchange December 12.

Speaking from her office in Juneau, Gov Palin set the scene: “It’s five below, not too cold to snow, which is nice, absolutely beautiful and white and crisp,” and then Gizzi began the interview with her:

Did you get it? Those of you who don’t live in Alaska, may not. Bonus points for you if you do.

Here’s the dubious claim: 5 degrees below zero in Juneau, on December 12th.

Hmmm.

People in Alaska tend to be a bit weather obsessed. Even those of you who do not live here can imagine why. I’ve got about a dozen weather sites bookmarked on my computer, and one of those remote weather stations that tells me what it’s doing outside. In a lucky coincidence, it’s about 5 below right now as I check the temperature here in Anchorage. 5 below zero is darn cold, I can assure you. I know that when I go out later, I’ll need to dress a lot differently than I would if it was 30 or 40 degrees warmer than that. There’s no way I’d think it was 5 below by mistake. It’s not unusual in Anchorage to have temperatures in this range in December. But it’s pretty unusual for Juneau, which is farther south, and has a more moderate, moister climate.

So, I did a little checking and chuckling while I enjoyed morning coffee. My source? You’re gonna love this. I went to a site called “Weather Underground.”

On December 12, the day of the interview in which Palin, supposedly in her Juneau office, said it was 5 below zero, the actual temperature in Juneau was…(drumroll)…

High 32F Low 21F

Pretty balmy! The day before, it had even been above freezing in Juneau. It hasn’t been below zero in Juneau in more than 10 months. (scratches head) That means she was off by between 26 and 37 degrees? Well, that’s peculiar.

Just out of curiosity, let’s check the weather in ….oh, I don’t know…Wasilla on December 12th.

High (O) degrees F – Low (-11) degrees F

Bingo! We have a winner.

So, in the grand scheme of the political world, is this a little silly? Probably. But that’s really the point, isn’t it? Why on Earth would Human Events and/or Sarah Palin lie about either a) the weather (highly unlikely) or b) where Sarah Palin was when she gave the interview. Why the silly lie? Here’s one theory. Palin, who has come under withering criticism for the lack of time she actually spends in the state’s capital, wants to take every opportunity, (real or not) to say that’s where she is. And if that means lying, well….whatever. Who’s going to know, right?

Answer: The Weather Underground.

You know, at first I thought she might be confused, perhaps confusing celcius and farenheit (easy to do, especially if it’s not -40 degrees — the only time the scales actually line up). Lots of self-employed people, and those under contract, “write-off” home offices on their taxes. However, it must be where you do most of your business. The Governor is only suppose to have one job. It has been her choice, and her choice only, to work out of her home, while occasionally commuting to the Anchorage office. I don’t believe you can claim per-diem (as an “away-from-primary-place-of-business expense–i.e. Juneau) while at the same time claiming a business office in the home. You can’t have it both ways. On the other hand, she could be on vacation days during the holidays. Paid vacation, in her case, but would NOT qualify for per diem.

It rally comes down to something simple….Her agenda is not that of the people of Alaska. Her agenda is personal, and we pay for it with public funds. And we are in dire need of leadership. NOW.

Unless she is quoted as saying, “I’m in Juneau and it’s five below,” there’s not basis for assuming that that’s what she meant to convey. And no reason for an Outsider to assume that she shuns the state capital as she does.

Weather underground has the temp in Juneau at -5 c some time after 4pm on the 12th Did she mean -5 c ?

“Not too cold for snow ?” Too cold is about -20F
-5C is Not even close to -20 F. -5C is Cold enough -to- -have- snow…

Crisp ? @ Juneau was at about 96% humidity and a few degrees below freezing. Probably not ‘crisp.’

    Wasilla at 1pm ? -5F and 50% humidity… Now thats crisp !

Not a slam dunk, but I think Palin is … well … when I can think of a positive adjective, I’ll get back to ‘ya.

She did not mean -5C. There is no way anybody living somewhere where it’s -5F doesn’t know it’s -5F! 30+ degrees difference is quite noticeable. AKM

  36. 36
    CRFlatsNo Gravatar says:

Joe, I agree. A cigar is sometimes just a cigar. This is just a cigar (tho probably a Havana).

An interviewer would naturally call the Governors Office (in the State Capitol of Juneau) to set up an interview. Her calls are then connected to her “office”, which is at her home in Wasilla, and she is asked about the weather. She is talking about one thing, the interviewer is assuming the obvious. Again, with SP, what seems obvious to us, is not her separate reality.

  37. 37
    austintxNo Gravatar says:

Okie Dokie – under what category do the days spent on the campaign trail fall under ??? Vacation !?!? 38. 38
    KaJoNo Gravatar says:

joe mcginniss (15:21:55) — and CRFlats — you suggested that the interviewer may have assumed SP was in her office in Juneau, and that “unless she is quoted as saying, “I’m in Juneau and it’s five below”….

Well, she did. This is what the 4th paragraph in the interview says:

“Speaking from her office in Juneau, Gov Palin set the scene: ‘It’s five below, not too cold to snow, which is nice, absolutely beautiful and white and crisp,’ and then Gizzi began the interview with her”…

    No assumptions there.

    CRFlatsNo Gravatar says:

AustinTx, good question for the Legislative Finance Committee. Another thought would be to create a State Office staffed by peeps not appointed by any present Gov., only past Guvs and Leg. that was our version of a General Accounting Office. The current Legislatures per-diem pay when not in session, is on the “honor system”…..I spit out my coffee when I read that little ditty in the ADN’s piece on the proposed salary increases (and introduced by non-other than Mr. Doogan, himself). I happen to agree they need an increase, but mostly, IMHO, they really need to get rid of anything requiring the honor system with this bunch.

  40. 40
    CRFlatsNo Gravatar says:

Kajo, I’m saying the interviewer simply assumed she was speaking from her offices in Juneau, because that is where they called. SHE was speaking from Wasilla. Easy confusion. Face it, confusion is her middle name.

  41. 41
    KaJoNo Gravatar says:

OK, I get it…it all depends on where the apostrophes are…. :) She isn’t actually QUOTED as saying “I’m in my office in Juneau…” not verbatim in the article, anyway.

…although she might very well have told Gizzi that in pre-interview remarks…

Another little detail we don’t really know.

But the temperature variances between Juneau and Wasilla are enough to make you do a double-take, reading the interview, if you know enough about typical weather in AK and other parts of the USA…

  49. 49
    DrChillNo Gravatar says:

    Hey AKM
If its 23 degrees in Juneau, and I say its -5 out, then I can claim – “… but I meant -5 Celsius” because 23f=-5c. That’s a bit unusual but its plausible.

If SP is saying its “crisp” in Juneau when the humidity is 96%, isn’t quite right and, if she’s
saying its “not TOO Cold to snow” when its closer to -melting- than it is to being TOO Cold (-20f) to snow, that isn’t quite right.
I’m guessing most people in AK do NOT use Celsius.
So, using Celsius in America for the out door temp isn’t quite right either.

Dubious indeed! I agree. I think you’re right.

I think she was in Wasilla when it was really “crisp” (50% humidity), and
very cold “-5″ (f) ; “but not too cold to snow.”
I think she was not in Juneau where it was just below freezing, damp and 23 degrees.

I predicted that when the Branchflower report came out, she’d cite it as vindication, and she did.

Now, if someone tried to nail her on this, I think she could claim to have been all metric-y, scientific-y and tres’ internacional.

Just when I’d hopefully seen the last of SP, except for an occassional dip into the Mudflats to see what she’s doing up north, what should appear in my very own Sunday, Lewistion Morning Tribune, Parade Mag., but a not to flattering front page photo of her same. Under the headline of “The Best & Worst of 2008″, an unforgettable year of change and challenge.

OK, I just had to see was she in the “best” or the “worst” column? So I quickly thumb over to page 4, where on the left page the mostly “bests” are listed, and then there on the right (page 5) under “Newsmakers: How They Changed the Year” It appears to be a draw as beside yet another photo of her same, a short clip states: “Sarah Palin (cover) Whether she was the best or the worst o f the year is a matter of opinion. A few years ago Governor Palin was mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska (pop.7028) Her selection as Johy McCan’s Vice Presidential running mate appalled some and energized others. With her eye on 2012, Palin could become the future of the Republican Party — or just a blip on the national memory.

Now back to todays topic, it would seem once again the Gov isn’t concerned with what she tells the media, or what they say about her, just so long as she keeps her name and face out there in the public eye. She has her own ways of keeping the locals (as in her staff and the legis.) in line if they get to unflattering and now she can spin the noise lower 48 critics make as “non or our business” until she once again jumps up to energize the “base” and save the Repub Party.

I’d love to go with her being just a “blip” on the national memory, but she’s more like the blip on a heart monitor, you don’t want to watch, but you can’t turn it off either.

Crystal! Don’t feed the trolls! I know it’s tempting, but don’t do it!

Bottom line: If SP’s lips (or the lips of any of her spokespeople) are moving, she is LYING. We know that, it’s not news! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

How about some DOT drama? I can’t wait to see how that unfolds!

Or, better question (someone above posed it) — will the Gov bail out on opening the legislative session so that she can try to get a stellar photo op at the inauguration?

Best question — when is Alaskans for Truth going to come up with a plan that will galvanize Alaskans? Let’s get rid of Governor Grifter!

Isn’t December 12 also the day that Palin’s church was set ablaze in an as yet-unsolved arson attack? Was Governor Palin in Juneau or was she in Wasilla on December 12?

Good question–where did she give that interview “apologizing” for whatever her role was?

I thought that she came there the next morning (sat?) after it had burned the night before…? They are never very clear about her timeline’s, but she went there and made the whole issue about her…of course!
Yes SMR If her lips move, She is LYING! 8)

As I recall, Bill McAllister, Palin’s spokesminion, issued the news bulletin saying that Palin had stopped by the church on Saturday (Dec 13) to apologize if the church arson had been a result of the negative publicity about her VP nomination. I don’t think there was an actual interview with Gov. Palin on that date.

As has been mentioned, she apparently was in Wasilla Saturday morning. From KTUU (AKA Palin News Network) :

Palin’s church damaged in suspicious fire

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Gov. Sarah Palin’s home church has been badly damaged in an arson fire.

Authorities estimate the damages to the Wasilla Bible Church at $1 million.

No one was injured in the fire last night, which was intentionally set while people, including two children, were inside.

The local fire chief says the fire “is definitely suspicious.”

Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say if the blaze was politically based or directed at Palin, the failed Republican vice presidential candidate. He also declined to say whether the church has received any recent threats.

Palin stopped by the church this morning. Her spokesman, Bill McAllister, says Palin told an assistant pastor she apologizes if the fire was connected to the “undeserved negative attention” the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate on Aug. 29.

Say No TO Palin In PoliticsNo Gravatar says:

first off, Palin is too dumb to use c*, we know that.

I either read or heard on video that on the night of the church fire someone came to their house at 1:30 am or so to let them know there had been a fire.

It is fun to catch her in the lies and fub ups isn’t it, lol……and there’s so many! let’s dig them all up.

I bet she would have loved to put Parnell in Stevens seat, then she could finish her gov term, run for Pres and have an Alaska rebup senator in her pocket, even if temp he’d probably then get elected in the special election, with all her favor and adoring Alaskan fans……all sorts of senarios don’tcha think?

so lets play name that “who her Senator” game……those who know Alaskan politians…….

I guessed Sean Parnell……didn’t she endorse him for something before?

Ya know she had “some” plan up her sleeve. She actually may have thought she could pull that putting someone in the seat business off. She’s dam sneaky and getting very cocky…….she likes getting things her way. She REALLY likes to take people out and put her people in.

Remember the comment she made while in New Mexico with McCain early in the campaign when they made a suprise stop at a restruarnt and someone asked Palin if she either endorsed or was going to vote for Stevens ( I can’t remember exactly)….Palin said, you know, he’s under indictment. (or something to that effect). She probably was scheming and plotting with who knows (another rebublican senator like McCain possibly?) way back then about what could happen to that seat if he was found guilty. And remember after the trial both Palin and McCain said he should step down.

It’s fun to “try” to think like the repubs and Palin but it does give me a headache and make me mad as heck if any of it could be true.

Interesting how the first couple of comments I made went through without a hitch, and then the last comment I made last night was suddenly blocked as spam?

I’m not a troll. What a way to welcome new readers. Calling them ‘trolls’ is the quickest way to lose them.

Jen, you broke the “you people” rule. When your first comment on a blog uses that phrase, you have pretty much taken a red Sharpie and written “I am a troll” on your virtual forehead. Civil disagreement is welcome. Rudeness is not. You are “suddenly blocked as spam” because you have been rude. This means when you comment, it will go to the spam bin. If you are playing nice, I will let your comment pass. If you are not, I will delete you. If you become too labor intensive, I will ban your posts. If you are not a troll, then please don’t act like one.

I believe that SP and the family headed back to Wasilla on 10 Dec., the day after they were in Juneau for the Governors’ House Annual Open House. So, she would have been in Wasilla or Anchorage from 10 Dec. till the evening of 14 Dec., when she apparently flew back to Juneau so she could announce the budget from here on 15 Dec. I would guess that she rapidly flew back to Anchorage/Wasilla that evening, though I don’t know for sure.

Oh Sarah, Sarah, Sarah. For a religious lady, you sure do have an elastic view of the truth. I don’t think it’s silly at all. She needs to be called out each and every time she tells a whopper to make herself look good. I know she doesn’t have much material to do that with, but inventing it is just wrong.

    Good job.

Ah, I see. So when addressing a group of people, I wonder what to say… You folks? All of you? Dear group? My deepest and most profound apologies for not following rules I had no idea existed.

If you want to legislate rudeness, I suggest you delete this site altogether. This is one of the rudest sites I’ve ever seen. And no worries, I won’t be back. It’s clear that unless my alleged rudeness is directed solely at Sarah Palin like the rest of the commenters, I am unwelcome.

SP has invaded my home twice more since she went down in flames with “crashy” McCain. (heh heh.. crashy and trashy..)

She sent a tourist packet to everyone in the lower 48 I think and then her mug was on that dumb “Parade” magazine, and I too was fooled into looking inside to see if she was one of the worst.

My skin crawls when I see she said things like:

“But my reliance on seeking God’s direction in all that I do — that is good enough for me. And others who have a different worldview and different strategy on messaging and such, I would like to have the opportunity to prove to them that my gut instincts were going to be quite adequate. ”

I think these sentances are worse than the ones that don’t make any sense at all…
