Boots on the Ground – A Mudflatter in D.C.

muckboots1

Just got a report from one of the scads of Mudflatters who are in D.C. this week.  Fawnskin (who hosted the Southern California Mudstock recently) checked in to give us a peek into her pre-inaugural activities.

All in D.C. are invited to send me updates & pictures to share!

*********(report from Fawnskin below)******************

I attended the Emily’s List luncheon today which was the epitome of our country’s progressive hope evidenced by the power of women.  I’d bought a table for the event and as there was a congressperson at each. I was in great anticipation of just who would sit down next to me!   I dared not hope, but hope came through!

Someone said, “Hi” put out her hand and said, “I’m Debbie Wasserman Shultz”.
Except possibly for Hillary or Senator Kay Hagan, this is the one person whom I’ve admired most throughout this election, and she was my luncheon mate for the talking and hob-nobbing and general feeling good of the occasion!

The speeches from the honored, and the atmosphere of things being done and people getting things done permeated the afternoon. We (all two thousand of us) lifted the rafters when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton entered the ballroom, and once again reminded us how far we’d all come with the rights of women…but how much harder we had to fight to make our freedoms available to women world wide.

I cried the first tears of the week this day. Many more are to come as I absorb the joyfulness of the thousands here in the capital of these United States.

Yippee! You met our “Little Debbie”, my Rep. from South Fla. I’ve watched her since I moved here (2 weeks before Hurricane Andrew – not a nice welcome to the state) and knew she could go places).

I expect to be writing her a lot on the next four years, but I also suspect it will be in support of what she’d do anyway. She really does work in our interests here.

That even included getting us needed money from those earmark thingies.

    Am I first?

I was telling a fellow blog reader in e-mail this morning:
I am not sure if it is one more day until the Bush Regime is out of power, or if it is one more day till Obama takes office and I can stop saying elect before his title…
I am OK, but I am floating in a muffled limbo, suspended in in a hyper-sensitive “What the fluff are they going to do on their way out?!” state. Maybe it is what they once said was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It certainly feels like the same thing as I felt once the ex was away and I was no longer getting beat on.
I want to feel like it is the night before Christmas and I will wake up tomorrow and get great presents from Santa Obama but, I know this is not how it will go down. I DO believe the fight we fought was just and that in many ways we won, so hopefully the elation will arrive. I needed to feel like I mattered and taking those fuckers out of power WAS a good thing. Slamming the door on the same old republican shit was a good thing. Now we just have to keep it up because nothing good comes easy and this is in reality just starting. So many things to fight for…

I keep telling myself, this is JUST the start. We STILL have a lot of work to do.

Nice to hear that you were at the Emily’s List event. Our own newly elected State Senator Jeanne Shaheen was honored as well. NH’s first woman senator and a democrat too – yipee! It has been great to watch Jeanne Shaheen succeed, she is a great voice for NH and for women’s voices everywhere.

To begin their transition, they asked everyone to do a day of service. I will be teaching native youth-and doing art with them in which we will use our language. while cooking a meal for the students who may not have food.

and I cried again, reading that! I sure wish I was able to be there, but it simply didn’t fit the budget.

For the day of service, I dropped off some food to the local food bank, and will try to do that on a regular basis.

Fawnskin, Your report gave me chicken skin. What an event! And having Debbie WS as your tablemate! Awesome in its own right, and as a bonus, it puts you at 2 degrees of separation from Rachel Maddow, who had Debbie on her show a number of times during the campaign.

I was in DC for an inauguration once. But it was Reagan. :-(

    Two Boots on the Ground

On this day of the inauguration, shortly, after midnight, I find sleep to be an impossiblity. I am in Alexandria, Virginia. Within six hours I will be joining the throngs of Americans entering the Metro Line or walking across bridges into our Capitol City. I will be simply this. One of many.

We will be witnesses to a new day, a new hope, a new opportunity for peace and prosperity, even in these troubled times. While steps from the Capitol, my thoughts and prayers will be with one place, the State that I love, Alaska.

It is time now. It is time to look past our present day trifles and think what is best for our land. The only answer I can think of is protect and fight for our home. Create a State where our environment, our greatest supporter of human life form, remains diverse and healthy. Create a State where our wildlife can thrive — where polar bears will live long past the next 50 years. Create a State where our diverse cultures can pursue their unique design yet come together for common good. Create a State where education is valued, where a 66% high school graduation rate is an insult to our people. Create a State with a sustainable economy. Create a State where the least among us find hope and desire to accomplish their greatest dreams.

These are my wishes. This inauguration leads me to believe they are not only possible but probable.
