The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

PIT BULL vs. pit bull, and a Strange Hypnotic Tale.

It all started with the now infamous joke during the RNC speech, which has turned out to be Sarah Palin’s peak of approval with the public at large.

What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?  Lipstick.

From that moment on, Palin was the quintessential pit bull.  There were pit bull buttons, pit bull t-shirts, and pit bull references everywhere you turned.  The pit bull became the official totem animal of the clan of Palin supporters.

A creepy example of pit bull "Sarahphernalia" available at a Palin rally

A creepy example of pit bull "Sarahphernalia" available at a Palin rally

Well, if Sarah Palin is a pit bull, then the woman who will hit the news on Monday can only be described as a Pit Bull.  I present to you all – Andree McLeod.  A former close political associate of Palin, McLeod has seen the light, and it has ticked her off.  By “the light”, I mean all the hypocrisy, rule bending, law breaking and shennanigans that are commonplace in the Palin administration.  McLeod has pulled on the mud boots, grabbed a rake, and waded in.

You may know her as the one who is currently involved in a legal case trying to get more than 1000 emails released to the public that were sent to Todd Palin, and are being withheld by the Palin administration.  The withholding is due to claims of “executive privelege,” even though Mr. Palin is not a state employee, and is just a regular citizen like you and me.  Back in December, the Anchorage Daily News reported the following:

“This latest refusal by the governor’s office to hold back official state e-mails has left me no other choice,” McLeod said. “And this is real important: The state can’t cloak these communications in secrecy when the governor and her staff have broken the chain of custody by sharing them with a mere private citizen, who is not … a state employee. Therefore, that entitles all citizens the right to examine these documents in the light of day.”

McLeod’s lawyer, Donald C. Mitchell, put it this way: “If Todd Palin is entitled to see them, then any other Alaskan, starting with Andree McLeod, is entitled to see them.” The governor’s office declined to comment on the appeal, filed in Anchorage Superior Court.

But this coming  Monday, expect new ethics charges to be filed by the real Pit Bull, Andree McLeod.  In this breaking story on the Huffington Post, Geoffrey Dunn who has written some great pieces on recent Alaskan political skullduggery, tells all.

In her current complaint against McAllister, McLeod sites a series of activities that she contends violate Alaska’s “Executive Branch Code of Ethics,” which prohibits public officials from using or authorizing “the use of state funds, facilities, equipment, services, or another government asset or resource for partisan political purposes.”

“These campaign activities have absolutely nothing to do with the public’s business, and everything to do with promoting Palin’s personal endeavors and political aspirations,” McLeod declared in an exclusive interview. “This must not go unchallenged.”

In her complaint, addressed to Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg, McLeod charges that state documents indicate McAllister traveled with the Palin entourage to Minneapolis for the Republican National Convention and that he was on the Alaska payroll September 1 to 5, 2008, allegedly “to provide staff support to the governor regarding state business.”

Yet an email from McAllister to Palin (on her controversial private Yahoo account) indicates that McAllister was clearly coordinating Palin’s activities for the RNC.

“The convention itself is requesting you to act as a surrogate for McCain for national media. Available blocs of time daily, are 5-9 a.m., 11 a.m. – 9.a.m Within those, they ask when you might be available for this purpose.”

Three other state of Alaska employees–Perry, Janice Mason and Sharon Leighow–were also copied by McAllister on what was clearly Republican Party business.

Janice Mason, you may recall, recently and suddenly resigned from her position in the Governor’s office.

But back to Bill McAllister. McLeod’s complaint cites several examples of McAllister boldly crossing the line from “state activities” to blatantly partisan ones, in defiance of the Ethics Code.

McAllister was once a respected and beloved news anchor at KTUU, Anchorage’s NBC affiliate.  Then, one night, [insert harp music here] he was sitting at his desk, working late.  The room, illuminated by only a desk lamp, gave good cover asa shadowy figure slipped into his office unnoticed.  If he had been paying attention, he might have heard the faint click click click of red pumps, but our intruder was stealthy.  As he sat, absorbed in his work, an object appeared in his peripheral vision.  Something shiny, and round…golden…and it was…swing-i-n-g…in front of his eyes, and he…just ….couldn’t…look…awayyyy.

A soft voice, slightly nasal, whispered in his ear.  “Bill, you are getting sleeeepeee.  You also can’t keep your eyes open any longer.  Too, though, you will allow yourself to fall into a deeeep sleeeeep.  In five minutes, you will awaken.  At this moment, you will do my bidding without hesitation.  You will ignore your common sense, your degree in mass communication, the Alaska Executive Branch Code of Ethics also, and listen only to me.  And you will awaken refreshed and filled with a sense of mission.  You will be so wired for that mission, Bill.  Now sleeeep…..”   The shadowy figure slipped the golden pocket watch back in her blazer pocket, and the heels quietly clacked down the hall, heading for Meghan Stapleton’s office.

Five minutes passed, and our protagonist snapped awake, his eyeballs slightly dusty from not blinking for so long, but otherwise feeling refreshed and rewired.  The next day when the Governor’s office offered him the job of Communications Director, he answered yes before they even finished the question.

At least that’s how I imagine it in my mind.  Reality may vary.  Maybe he’s just smitten.

The other target of McLeod’s complaint is Palin assistant, and long time friend,  Kris Perry.

McLeod’s charges leveled at Perry–Palin’s former campaign manager who headed up the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce while Palin was mayor there–are similar to those directed at McAllister. Apparently, Perry spent six weeks on the campaign trail with Palin. She also traveled to Georgia with Palin when she campaigned for Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss–all at Alaskan taxpayers’ expense.

All this, of course, because Palin refused to turn the reins of the state over to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell.  As I’ve stated before, I certainly wouldn’t trust Sean Parnell to run the state either.  But neither did  I vote for Sarah Palin. (licks finger and scores one “air point” for self)

So, I invite you all to spend your Sunday, imagining all the components of the Palin “collective”, scurrying around, wringing their hands, and madly punching their Blackberries with big saucer eyes.  I know I will.

And if anybody sees Bill McAllister around town, do me a favor and check out my theory.  Walk up to him and snap your fingers really loudly in his ear, and see if he jolts awake, not knowing where he is.

Who can forget Palinbot Meg Stapleton joined at the hip with the McCain operatives that hijacked Alaska when Palin took to the VP campaign trail — standing in front of big McCain/Palin signs to anser all questions about Troopergate??

Or the campaign related press releases that recently came out of the EgoGov’s office on state letterhead – the ones with her whining/blaming the media for ‘attacking her family’ .

Certainly all of that falls under state laws which prohibit public officials from using or authorizing “the use of state funds, facilities, equipment, services, or another government asset or resource for partisan political purposes.”

Andree McLeod has more balls than any of our wimpy legislators and I hope she doesn’t let anything stop her from revealing the truths about Palin. Go Andree!

Well this sounds like a good development for Alaska although it is a tangent to some of the other issues that have been aired elsewhere. IANAL so I can’t say whether it makes sense or not to address this complaint to the AG, after all he participated in advising state empoyees to ignor legislative subpoenas. Incidentally, if you look up the roots of that word, sub > under, poena > penalty. The implication is that there is supposed to be a consequence if you don’t appear.

That is why I think the US attorney should be investigating the AG of Alaska.

I would also like to point out that in the not that distant past, the president of the US was subpoenaed in a civil lawsuit to give a deposition. He responded and as a consequence was impeached but not convicted. Yet by any measure he abided by the law whereas the Palin administration appears to be flaunting them. So one might well ask, is justice meted out evenhandedly?

If minor staff members of the executive branch can ignore the law with impunity in this administration, why should anyone have to pay traffic fines, or appear for jury duty?

Do not let them get away with it!

Otherwise, sweet dreams and zai jian….

Andree is awesome, I’ve spoken with her several times. She and Palin go way back.

I had a hunch Bill McAllister was going to work for Palin (or was secretly in love with her IMO) LONG before he announced he was leaving KTUU. As a viewer I had emailed him on several occasions stating my opinion about ACES and AGIA. His responses were ALWAYS favorable to the governor. I even commented to my husband that something was going on, no journalist worth their salt would be so blatantly one-sided in their responses. I don’t watch KTUU now, ever, for they cannot be trusted after suspicions arose involving Megan Baldino as well (she was allegedly feeding info to Todd Palin). She has since moved to South Bend, Indiana.

To date KTUU has provided Palin with: Rhonda McBride, Meghan Stapleton, might-have-been-next Megan Baldino, and Bill McAllister, We joke here in Alaska: “Who’s next?” My guess? ADN’s Wes Loy. His blog reports include such important state info like “Palin Sighted a Bear on the Way to the Office,” and “Palin Served Cupcakes Tonight at Reception.” Quality journalism—-NOT!

Also Alaskan’s, at the very least, push your legislators to:

    1) elect (not governor appoint) a state Attorney General! AK is only 1 of 5 states that appoint, get a clue.

    2) lay down rules for state communications, private emails should not be allowed, period.

    3) take a clue from this prez campaign example……make it a state law that the gov would be required to hand over the reins to the lt. gov.

“The overriding issue for former Lt. Gov. Jack Coghill, however, is that Palin continued to call the shots as governor during her unprecedented absence from the state to run for national office.”

State officials have said the governor ably handled both jobs.
(my note: which state officials “have” said this? McCallister? who? too vague reporting, perhaps this reporter could clarify who said what, what state work was done from afar? we know she missed meetings, didn’t have the budget ready or the energy report ready on time, much less a real energy report, what about those appointed to committees that did nothing? what did that cost? while people are freezing to death and starving)

In the 2000 presidential campaign, then Texas-Gov. George W. Bush turned over his duties to Lt. Gov. Rick Perry when Bush was out of state. (my note: even Bush was smart enough to do this)

In identical circumstances in the 1992 presidential campaign, then Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton turned over his duties to the lieutenant governor, Jim Guy Tucker, as called for in that state’s constitution. (my note: as called for by state constitution)

Coghill, an author of the state constitution, said he remains unwavering in his conviction that Palin should have done the same in her cross-country campaign as the state constitution implies but doesn’t explicitly require. (my note: implies!? but does not require? is this poor judgement on Palins’ part?)

“It’s not a moot issue. It’s a constitutional issue, even after the fact,” he said. “Now you can have someone come back later and say, ‘Well, Palin did it.”‘

“Hello – I got hooked on reading Mudflats ever since the “largest political rally” in the state of Alaska let some of us in the lower 48 learn more about your governor. We have Arnold. Sigh.”

“So now I have a Mudflats habit and check your site almost every day. Today, for the sake of learning more about Alaska and understanding references and issues surrounding energy resources and environmental impacts, I clicked over to the official state of Alaska website at: http://www.state.ak.us/.

“Surprisingly, I encountered another rendition of the story of how Sarah Palin has been wronged. It seemed like a very odd, painfully personal, and alarmingly inappropriate item to appear on the Alaska state government homepage. On that homepage, in the topic area “Headlines” was the following link:”

” Governor Says “There You Go Again”
to Salacious Nature of Recent Reporting ”

“However, after reading about the “salacious reporting” I clicked on Sarah’s portrait on this same state homepage. This click took me to the Governor’s homepage or “online office.” And here I once again found another very odd, painfully personal, and alarmingly inappropriate link. In the topic area entitled “Governor’s Office” I was able to click on the “First Gentleman of Alaska.” I might have assumed that information on Sarah’s husband or the governor’s family would have been listed under the topic area “Links of Interest” rather than as part of the “Governor’s Office.” It was another interesting read.”

“Before today I’d learned a bit about Todd Palin’s involvement in the governor’s office and in official affairs, but hadn’t expect to see him actually listed as part of the office with detailing of his areas of interest … which include a good bit, it would appear, on apprenticeship programs.”

” Office of the Lt. Governor
    Boards and Commissions
    Administrative Orders
    Proclamations
    Management and Budget
    Governor’s Biography
    First Gentleman of Alaska
    Official Portraits
    Contacts/Locations”

“Now I have to go check the official state of California webpage. Who knows what I’ll find. Thanks for all the info at Mudflats and for all your work. A special thanks for all the good links you provide! It really helps me take a time out from my real life here in California. I bet Sarah pulls out that letter Frank wrote several years ago stating that Nancy goes where he goes. Nancy never walked the halls and made demands of Frank’s staff, nor was she ever included in on cabinet meetings. We did not elect Todd, so he should not be included either. She needs to appoint him to something so that he is legit, or she just needs to make hard copies of all her emails and let him read them as her confidant outside of the state offices.
Kris Perry’s relationship with Sarah makes me wonder if Kris is actually our governor and Sarah is fronting her? It wouldn’t be the first time Sarah hired someone to do her job for her.

    Hooray for Andree—
She is doing what all the news media in this state will not do! Andrew Halcro and her are our only venues to get this news out. Now….Andree, could you please follow up on the coruption going on at the Division of Agriculture and the Board of Ag? Now the NEW Matanuska Creamery received $650,000 in Fed grant money, a million $ of equipment plucked out of the old dairy, and a brand new $630,000 UNSECURED loan, and all their creditors paid off to clean up all their debt for the last year……….. Unbelievable as it sounds—this is a totally ILLEGAL loan. Two of the owners are defunct dairy farmers who have defaulted on over 4 MILLION DOLLARS in agriculture loans from this state. (they have come back for MORE!) Our state statutes state that once you default on a state loan, you do not qualify for another. So…how is this being allowed!!!!!!!?????????? Talis Colberg has been informed and looks the other way. On top of this, when they requested the money it was to be a one year note–then it was changed to a three year note and now as of last Thursday, the board is allowing them to not make ONE SINGLE payment for an entire YEAR! So…what are the odds that this bunch of con-artists will have enough to make a huge payment a year from now…..NONE. (they will do like last time—ask for another year moratotium and then default on the loan after they have stuffed their cookie jar full of free money) It will be wiped clean because of the relationship between Palin and this renegade bunch. The Director of Ag is a high school buddy of Palin’s…Franci Havemeister. She used to be a part time realtor who worked for Kristan Cole who is Palin’s best friend. ugh…and…Franci’s father and mother in law babysat Palin as a child. No conflicts of interest, though, eh???????? The long time loan manager who knows all about state statutes and knows they are blatantly being broken has been REMOVED from the dairy issues. She has been replaced by Ray Nix who people from the Valley say is a convicted Felon who was hired by the Division of Ag while out on work release. So…as we have it, the FOX is guarding the Hen House. Two assistant AG’s and two attorneys have resigned from this bunch because they cannot keep them “coloring inside the lines” and did not want to be held personally accountable for blatant corruption and law breaking.. This is stuff that all will come out. For starters you can go to the division of Ag webpage on the State of Alaska website and read the posted meeting minutes. The November 2008 one is interesting…one board member asks if the meeting is being recorded—why is that????? Worried????/ Andreee—-remember some of those emails you finally got from FOIA and the ones with Mat Maid in the subject line were blacked out? There is a reason. Lots to hide. They kinow it and ADN knows it….they keep removing any refeerence to this new Valley Dairy DBA Matanuska Creamery. No amount of money is too much to spend to keep subsidizing this bunch of crooks…it was Palin’s first big BOO-BOO and she will go to any lengths to cover up how much money has ACTUALLY been filtered to her friends in the Valley. They are “milking the state.”

Then you have Ralph Carney , former board of Ag member who resigned from the board so he could apply for his own AG loan for his potato chip company. Come to find out he put his business up for sale on December 24, 2008 while at the same time trying to get some of this loose money from the state. What happened behind closed doors in executive session? On his sales flyer under “reasons for selling” he stated that the he was not knowlegeable enough to take the business any further. So he is stating HIMSELF he does not know how to run his business but then is trying to get one of these sweetheart deal loans from the Divison of Ag? What is actually going on????? All the vegetable and crop farmers in the Valley are now calling the Division of Agriculture the “Division of Dairy.” Those 4 dairy farmers have dominated everything that goes on in that division for over two years now.

What happened to the 80,000 lbs of listeria laden cheese the new dairy produced? Word is that a transportation company in Anchorage hauled thousands of pound of cheddar cheese to the Food Bank in Fairbanks. Surely our DEC would have made sure that the cheese was disposed of in the landfill….but was it? Not one person in that plant has any experience in food manufacturing. They have had two milk recalls and then the disaster with the cheese. Who is watching and checking their bacteria levels?

If Talis Colberg will not look into this….WHO will? There is no where to go with this but through these blogs that will print the truth without filtering. Time will take care of this. Palin has made too many enemies and some will start taliking

Thank you for the opportunity to get this out.

It’s only been 5 days since he was inaugurated, so I’m going to give his transparency promise the benefit of the doubt at this point, but I think it’s reasonable to believe that everyone will be up in his business from here on out, expecting a lot of that transparency & accountability that he was talking about. Of course our Gov talked plenty about it as well, and when the citizens actually called for it, suddenly there was all sorts of fingers in ears and “I can’t hear you.” I have faith that Obama is a million times the leader that both W and Palin were/are, and until I see proof that that is not the case I will continue to have faith.

I have news for any Sarah Palin supporters: In my 40 years in Alaska she is hands-down the worst governor we have ever ever had, puts Frank Murkowski to butt-burning shame in the cronyism/back-door-dealing department, and has underminded the best interests of Alaska from day 1 of her tenure as Governor. Check back w/Alaska one year from now, then 2 years, then 3 years, then 10 years, and see if that TransCanada pipeline has been built, and maybe find out how in the hell we’re going to get back that $500 million that we so desperately need. CNN, NBC, BBC, everyone showing up at his door, still he did not exploit those opportunities. I was tempted to ask if he’s had book offers as well, but didn’t. Regardless, he is a man committed to taking the high road and not dragging his state through the mud, unlike some others who could be named… Anchorage would be lucky to have someone as ethical & intelligent, with great leadership skills, as its Mayor.

@Blue Idaho — God no, no baby stuff from me. My second baby was born more than 24 hrs after my water broke, and was in the hospital for days to ensure that there was no infection/complication as a result of that. Therefore I believe that she is either lying or very irresponsible — one or the other, doesn’t matter which to me, frankly, as both are irredeemable in my eyes. The circumstances as related by her make her even more loathesome, but I wouldn’t write a story about it.

Boo,boo bear-What happened to the 80,000 lbs of listeria laden cheese the new dairy produced? Word is that a transportation company in Anchorage hauled thousands of pound of cheddar cheese to the Food Bank in Fairbanks. Surely our DEC would have made sure that the cheese was disposed of in the landfill….but was it

What I dont get is how the Evangelical crowd is able to put blinders on and earplugs in when it comes to Sarah Palins actions. She has repeatedly said that when she found out the baby would have Downs, she and the First Dud prayed over it and decided to go ahead with the pregnancy and “put it in Gods hands “.Is that not a personal choice that she made ?Exactly how does this make her pro-life ? In my mind, she is pro-choice,because she made the choice to stay pregnant with him .Of course, choice may only be appropriate for Sarah, you know,”do as I say,not as I do “. I do believe she gave birth to Trigg ,and that she may have indeed left it in Gods hands,in that she took no precautions to insure his health,it was up to God.

Don’t worry…I keep posting both yours and Audrey’s sites everywhere I go. I believe those photos are worth a 1,000 words. And, you know, when someone tries to discourage others, well, that makes them want to go and see for themselves…so, let it roll off your back. Your site is great and so is Audrey’s. Won’t be too long before the story breaks wide open. And I still think you should consider putting all of it in a book, and titled, “How a Governor Faked a Pregnancy!”

seems reinstatement of the freedom of information act by Pres. Obama should asst Ms. Mcleod?? anyone should have the freedom to access State information.

You are talking apples and oranges.

Seems to me that the Palin issues are matters under the state public access laws.

Whatever Prez Obama does is under the federal FOIA statutes. In nearly all instances, state records cannot be accessed by a federal FOIA request. That is something which the US Prez cannot change.

Unfortunately this is likely to go nowhere because she filed the complaint with Talis Colberg, Palin’s hand-picked lackey. He will undoubtedly quash the complaint.

There is an easy cure for the Colberg disease. It is called a writ of mandamus. Someone with standing (pretty much any citizen of Alaska) needs to go to the appropriate court and file a writ of mandamus seeking to force the AG to enforce the law. It will be a process, but the filing alone may shake things up enough and cause Colberg to reconsider his position and methods. And it will force everything out into the open. The light of day.

“You folks cant respect any sanctity of information between a husband and wife? You folks can’t look at your own marital relationships and understand that perhaps Todd Palin would be Governor Palins’ closest adviser on major decisions.”

    ___________________________

So what you are suggesting is that no woman can do her job without her husband being her “advisor.” Or, in other words, no woman is worthy of a job at any level unless her husband is there, sitting in her chair, making all the decisions for her.

    Wow.

Go ahead. Join the AIP. You’ll just be another treasonous seditionist.

Sarah Palin, not Todd, was elected as the governor of Alaska. With the position comes certain responsibilities and restrictions, none of which may be hidden behind some clever interpretation of the marital privilege.

Someone else posted they don’t understand her supporters. That is my question too. They seem SO blind it is frightening and it feeds right into Palin’s warped narcissism. Why can’t they see how phony, corrupt and non-Christian acting she is?? I do not get it. I was reading some of the adn.com forums and I can’t get over how nasty and blind her supporters are. And if someone writes about her, they immediately call you a name and slam Obama. They don’t even address the issue at hand intelligently. They cut down all liberals and criticize having a good education!!!! Thanks for reading my rant but I find it shocking.
I just hope Andree’s actions work. Palin has got to be stopped. She and her low iq supporters are dangerous. Have you noticed how they love to say we are afraid of Palin? Well yeah, for good reason!!!!!!
