The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Sarah Palin and the Alfalfa Club.

Now THAT's an Alfalfa Club that Impresses Me.
Now THAT’s an Alfalfa Club that Impresses Me.

Here’s the latest news from our globe trotting Gov.

Next month, Palin will address a gathering of influential conservatives in Washington but before then, the big date in her diary is Saturday’s Alfalfa club dinner in Washington. The event is an invitation-only occasion for some of the most powerful men and women in America.

Usually the president himself speaks at the dinner, though the highlight for many guests is the mock nomination of a future presidential candidate.

But wait, there’s more!

[The Alfalfa Club] is an exclusive Washington, D.C. club for the rich and powerful, founded in 1913. Its sole purpose is to hold an annual banquet each January honoring the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. There are approximately 200 members. Each member is eligible to bring up to two guests to the $200-a-plate dinner. The club always serves filet mignon and lobster.

No press coverage is allowed inside the banquet hall and the proceedings are ostensibly secret, but the Washington newspapers always seem to get a fairly detailed blow-by-blow description anyway. Regardless, the congenial atmosphere lends itself to politically-incorrect humor. In essence the event is just another roast, providing one more showcase for Washington bigwigs to unveil their professionally-written jokes.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a mock presidential nomination, and acceptance speech by the pretend winner.  Previous Alfalfa nominees have been Prescott Bush, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John McCain and Ted Stevens.  So far, I’m not impressed with the Alfalfa Club.  Guess we’ll have to wait and see if Palin is “Miss Alfalfa 2009″.

So, after all that, my question is, will Kris Perry or Bill McAllister be tagging along to join Sarah and Todd for surf & turf?  Amid the flurry of new ethics charges against her administration, it will be interesting to see how the personnel, and finances all pan out for this little shindig at the Alfalfa Club.  Rumor has it she’ll also tack on some time to attend the RNC Winter Meeting.  Maybe it will all be paid for by SarahPAC!

I think it’s time to dust off those “Where’s Sarah?” buttons.  The legislature has worn them before to acknowledge Palin’s Juneau-phobia.  And yes, both the Alfalfa/RNC trip and the CPAC trip will happen during the 90 day Legislative session.

But if those who voted in the poll in the previous thread are right, then Sarah doesn’t have to worry one whit about what the Legislature, or you and I think, or what engagements she decides not to attend. If Palin goes straight from Governor, to author, to candidate, that solves all her problems.

wheres-sarah(“Where’s Sarah?” buttons are available individually or in bulk at The Mudflats Shop! Two styles available to complement any wardrobe.)

No, Gov. Palin. Don’t worry your tender head another minute about the woes of those dear folks freezin’ and starvin’ in Emmonak. You just let those already hard pressed for money for their own families to send money and food on your behalf. It’s sorta like the blogs community service stuff. But really, we all know that’s akin to virtual socialism, right sweets? Don’t let the honest to God reality of the effects of your mismanagement ruin your good time. Now, off you go honey bunny. Not to mention perhaps a Dem majority in House and Senate as the Repugnant backlash begins. She is only serving to further fragment the Repubs and for that we should all rejoice. Within her party she is most definitely a divider, not a uniter and that only makes the Dems stronger.

The parallels between our Illinois Governor and the Alaskan Governor continue to strike me. But no arguement that they are supremely self-confident, only listen to the strange tunes in their heads, can do no wrong, are drawn like moths to the flame and care about no one but themselves.

Blagojovich is about to be out of a job, probably this week. It is a painful and ugly episode for our state that has had its share. Please Alaska learn a lesson. If you can’t throw her out vote her out.

The media need to be held accountable. The voters need to be held accountable. The candidates need to be held accountable. As do other elected officials who here, and up there, need to stop their criminal enabling of this kind of behavior.

We don’t know what’s ahead for Illinois government but it has to be better. It will be for Alaska too. And every where else where this kind of stuff is allowed to happen.

PETA is just following up on it’s long line of publicity-seeking stunts, but this time it just feels like they’re kicking a young woman when she’s down. Bristol’s not only got a newborn to deal with, but her boyfriend, Levi Johnston just lost his job on the oil rig, and his mother is a wreck. Illinois’ Legislature finally got the balls to impeach it’s Gov. To bad Alaska’s Legislature isn’t up to the task.

Short of that, everyone is just spinning their wheels on these blogs. Don’t get me wrong, I think Sarah should be impeached, but there is nothing I can do as I live in the L48.

So my suggestion is to start writing and calling your Legislators and post the letters (not emails – those get ignored) and their responses here and on some of the Conservative blogs. It’s amazing how a “put off” form letter from a Legislator gets the buzz going after a few are published.

Get to the people who aren’t active and think that Sarah is doing a great job, on board. Open their eyes.

Get on the radio talk stations. Argue with the Palinistas on these radio stations. If nothing else, it gets the word out.

I could be wrong but I thought I read that missionaries came to the villages some time(years) ago, like they have been doing forever robbing indigenous peoples of their ancestral beliefs…Although I don’t think the missionaries are as extreme as Barbie’s beliefs, they hold the basic anti-birth control etc. Look even today the repub is holding up the stimulus program b/c PO has included funding for BC! Amazing, isn’t it supposed to be a woman’s choice??? I’m not child bearing age anymore, but GD I believe in a woman’s choice!!! When I had to get my son Baptized 33 years ago ( my MIL insisted on it) the priest asked me a extremely personal question about BC. You got to know those guys are not happy and they’ve got to find a new dumb bubbette to fire up the fear and hate. You know all the money that flew out of D.C right after the election went some place and they are so busy trying to keep it hidden, but it will not take the new crowd in town long to find it, unless they get it funneled out to their next puppet heads.

Sorry Simply Sarah people are watching and now you have lots more folks wanting to know your every move and it isn’t to hard to find out…

  139. 139

It’s clear that Sarah just doesn’t get it. She really thinks that all those rules apply to everyone but her, because she is so perfect. Yech!

Hubby was commenting tonight that a guy that he works with who is a die hard repub was talking with another repub. First guy was going on about how they can filibuster this thing (I assume the stim. bill) and the second guy, who seems to have some understanding of the real world, said “No, there are people hurting. It needs to get taken care of.” First guy still didn’t get it, and hubby is still shaking his head.

Looking at Sarah and listening to her is just the confirmation that there are a lot in the republican party that really don’t have a clue why they lost. They are so out of touch with what’s happening in the US and the rest of the world that they still think they have the best answers – and that only the republicans have the answers. I have always thought they (the republican party, in general) was a tad on the arrogant side, but now they just look silly and down-right stupid in their arrogance.

I’m still puzzled by the who Alfalfa dinner thing. It started in 1913 to honor the birthday of Robert E. Lee? But why? If it’s a roast, are they making fun of him by doing that, or what’s the deal? I just don’t get it. Other than the little four year detour, Lee served his country and his state well.

The thing is, even if Palin is being set up, she won’t get it. I don’t think she got how much SNL was poking fun at her and that it wasn’t particularly done in a friendly manner. But I guess she’s like the disruptive kid in class – any attention is better than no attention. She does like the spotlight, that one.

My uncle who was a Repub and AG of ID at one time, told me rules and laws are for the dumb masses, and can be broken by anyone smart enough to write a new rule and make the dumb ones believe it’s a better rule and they should all follow the new rule, but never expect those smart enough to make up the rules to be smart enough to follow them.

Holy, I missed alot while I was studying. It is shocking that SP is still considering a future in national politics.

As for her extreme beliefs, I have struggled with this issue for along time. I am glad that I am finally over that, but there are so many who support her there and will probably continue to, but I am not scared.

I suppose i was the night before the election, but once I realized that MCCAIN/PALIN didn t make it , that was a huge sigh of relief.

It is hard to say what it will take to get her out, I m sure some people from Wasilla know the feeling. And, just because she is Gov, I believe there are too many people who will go against voting for her, because of her beliefs. It shocked me when she made it in office, and that post re: her church, that is almost cult like and scary. how big is this organization and do they really have an impact on American society? I dont think so!

All we have to do , is pull together like that last election. This seems like, what she is doing, sarahpac, is a way to hide her accountibility. Is all of this legal? I say, if you cant handle the affairs of a small (ALASKA is the SMALLEST, the total population is even smaller than some cities) how can they try to take on,, governing our country. WEIRD!

Wyoming, Vermont and North Dakota have smaller populations than Alaska. (And while I have the statistics page pulled up, the Great State of Texas has 261,797 sq. miles of land and Alaska has 571,951 sq. miles.) But I understand your concern, mt.

When Sarah ran for gov, she didn’t say much about her religious beliefs. Just that she’s a Christian. No thumpy rhetoric at all. We had no idea it was this bad…

If you go look at Sarah’s Facebook page, she spent a lot of time this morning (on a work day) noodling around on her page. We don’t have a viable budget yet, the Alaska Municipal League is in town, the lege is in session and she’s farting around on Facebook, announcing her PAC. We obviously don’t have an adult on the Third Floor in the Capital Building. (3rd floor is the office of the gov and lt. gov.)

You guys will get a laugh out of this — Rep. Richard Foster (DINO, Nome) has the office on the 4th floor that’s directly above the governor’s office. It’s a big, beautiful corner office. Richard loves music. He holds jam sessions regularly, after working hours. When the gov ticks him off, they hold drumming sessions : )

As far as who invited SP to the dinner, Cindy Adams of the New York Post is the one who broke the story yesterday and said it was a “rich GOPnik”. Doesn’t sound how she would have described McCain. But who knows? On her blog, Greta Van Sus. said that Ms. Adams out scooped everyone on this. Speaking of Greta-Before Christmas, SP called in to her tv show and as she was signing off said “Merry Christmas Greta!” Does this nitwit not know that Greta is a scientologist? Classic!

My hope is with the intelligent people in place in this administration it will set the bar so high that SP is toast before she gets a run off the ground. Look at that Hillary moving along, apparently planning to remain in lockstep with Obama’s “get it done right, and now” approach. She is the real female model, so far.

Anyone know if there are reporting rules or legal ways to find out what the PAC’s are bringing in? We need action and vigilance ongoing to thwart this idiot’s future plans. Just tell us what to do, if anyone has some more good ideas. Appreciate those already in this comment section.

The Republicans have been so helpful for the past few years; Minnesota wide stance, ” I can see Russia from my house” qualifying me for foreign experience, per SP, Duke Cunningham, Libby, Cheney and Bush = we tortured and Gonzales said it was okay, etc. We just need them to keep it up!

Questions is, who will be Pres and who VP? Maybe they could play tic, tac, toe, winner is VP

Since it seems that Sarah Palin is judging her popularity based on number of friends on her Facebook page, we that aren’t her friends can now join a Facebook group and let the world know how we feel. If you currently have a Facebook account you can join this group and help the numbers speak for themselves at:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=27408324140

Once you go to the group link above you can login to your facebook account and click the “join this group” button under Sarah’s photo.

If you don’t have an account already you can go to

    http://www.facebook.com

and create a new account and then sign up with the group using the first link above.
Since keeping score really seems to matter to Sarah, let’s all join this group and see if we can get more people signed up that DON’T support her.

Sorry if I missed it, but does anybody know why SarahPAC has a Virginia address and who’s picking up the mail there?

Palin’s history suggests she’s well versed in the crony system, starting with some District 14 Republicans who don’t play fair when it comes to Valley politics. (Despite her being a self-proclaimed reformer, I see the ethically challenged like Ruedrich and the ugly segment of the local Repubs are all still in place.) I wonder who her new east coast cronies are? Surely McCain has learned his lesson after she cost him the election?
