Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

“She’s Got Mail!” and We Can’t Have It.

Finally we have an update in the email saga.  Seems like the Governor’s office isn’t ready, after four months, to turn them over.  Here’s a press release from the Alaska Democratic Party:

The Alaska Democratic Party (ADP) has objected to a request from Governor Sarah Palin’s Office for another two months or more of additional time to release official emails sent and received by Governor Palin in 2007 and 2008.

The Alaska Democratic Party’s request for the Governor’s emails about specified topics already has been pending more than four months, since Sept. 22, 2008. The latest request from Linda Perez, Palin’s Administrative Director, to Attorney General Talis Colberg asks for an additional extension until March 31. Perez’s letter of Jan. 28 says that she will ask for yet another further extension “once I have an estimate of the additional time necessary to provide the records.” Under the Public Records Act, public records are supposed to be provided within 10 working days of being requested, or as soon as practicable.

“Governor Palin’s campaign promises to conduct the State’s business in a transparent and open manner appear meaningless,” said Alaska Democratic Party Chair Patti Higgins. “These repeated delays are excessive and unwarranted. There is obvious obfuscation going on here. Sarah Palin is proving herself to be anti-transparent about her own communications and activities.”

An email from David Jones, Senior Assistant Attorney General, to Perez dated Jan. 28 states that “we have made little progress” in preparing public records for release. His email indicated that new software was obtained that was supposed to enable the Department of Law to number, review and redact the records electronically, but the department has not been able to use the new software. “The records are not yet available to us in a form that will permit us to number, review and as necessary, redact them,” Jones wrote.

It appears that the Office of the Governor and the Attorney General have lumped in the ADP’s straightforward request with more complex requests from other entities involving private mailboxes, and thus the State has not dealt with the ADP’s request in compliance with the statute and regulations. Just because the State is not able to fulfill other requests without an extensive search does not mean that the State is relieved of the obligation to provide accessible records in a timely manner to the ADP.

The state informed the ADP in earlier correspondence that its request would require a search of the state mailboxes of 51 separate individuals. Complying with the ADP’s records request requires searching only the email of Governor Sarah Palin, Higgins said.

The emails sought could have been identified with simple search commands, and the records sought should have been produced by now, Higgins said.

“We trust that the Attorney General will not make another biased decision for the benefit of the Governor, but rather will act to protect the interests of Alaskans who have a legal right to obtain public records,” Higgins said.

Which emails are they looking for?  Here’s the intriguing list:

• All those between Palin and state Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole, or between Palin and state Sen. Fred Dyson, R-Eagle River, with the words “abortion” or “AGIA,” which is short for the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act;

• All e-mails from Palin containing the following words: babysitter, childcare, McCain, Obama, Democrat, Huckabee, Wal-Mart, Eskimo, Natives, Kuwait, passport, Ruedrich, or Kopp;

• All e-mails between Palin and her husband, Todd, with any of the following words: vote, veto, budget, oil, Monegan, or Wooten; and

• All e-mails between Palin and her sister, Molly McCann, with the words Wooten or Monegan.

We all keep hoping that something may finally be hitting the fan but think about this for a moment. Who has Sarah been pallin’ around with this weekend in DC?
Well, only the finest examples of obfuscation and spin in the whole of our great country!

A dinner with Fred Malek and his cronies last night (Fri) and the Alfalfa Club members tonight (Sat).

A very different Sarah Palin may return to Alaska this Sunday.

Some of the people she is “pallin around with” this weekend were able to assist Bush in explaining away the lack of Iraqi WMD’s that were the root cause of us going to war against Iraq.

Pregnancygate, Troopergate, housegate, broken-water-gate, ignoring-hungry-and-cold-Alaskans- gate? Some of the string pullers and political insiders that she is dining with this weekend would have to consider these offenses “small time” problems and would be able to give her advice on how to “spin them to her benefit” in under a minute. All while stuffing their faces with gourmet delights and sipping vintage wines.

The more she insinuates herself into these groups of elite political insiders, the more they will help her to “wash these things right out of her hair”. She is spending the weekend with some of the best “spinmeisters” in the business. (okay, I made up a word)

She is spending the weekend with some of the same Washington Insider Elites that she took pride in not being part of during her campaign. Now she is happy to be breaking bread with them? Of course she is because now, with her PAC formation showing her willingness to raise money for the cause, they will entertain her and give her pointers on how to become EXACTLY THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT SHE USED TO FIND SO DISTASTEFUL!

All I can say is this. Let us like-minded people keep up the pressure on her and her obfuscations. A Pajama Clad Blogger (Adam Brickley) helped to get the ball rolling for her, perhaps another segment of the “Jammie Coalition” can at least slow the momentum a bit

Besides, she’s always made every effort to leave no fingerprints-by using her own personal email account. In her official emails to Monegan, she very cleverly avoided asking directly for Wooten’s dismissal, as did her employees in the tape-recorded call to the Troopers Office.

Does the famed legal mind President Obama has picked to be his regulatory czar really have a “radical animal-rights agenda”? And if so, is that the real reason an industry front group called the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) has launched a campaign against him?

Cass Sunstein, a renowned Harvard law professor who once taught with Obama at the University of Chicago, has been tapped to run the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). The agency, little known to the public but highly influential in the executive branch, oversees all of the federal government’s current and newly created regulations. If confirmed as the head of the agency, Sunstein will supervise the implementation of much of Obama’s consumer safety, health, and environmental agenda. Because regulations in these fields are often opposed by big business, Sunstein will play a huge role in managing the Obama administration’s relationship with industry.

On his first day in office, President Obama put former president Bush on notice. His administration just released an executive order that will make it difficult for Bush to shield his White House records–and those of former Vice President Dick Cheney–from public scrutiny by invoking the doctrine of executive privilege. Shortly after taking office, Bush handed down his own executive order, amending the Presidential Records Act to give current and past presidents, along with their heirs, veto power over the release of presidential records, which are considered the property of the American people.

    >>> Now, these are federal records -different and obviosuly, some new, laws. But, as I encouraged before. call te ACLU of AK, see if they can help get pblic record to the PUBLIC.

CNN reporting on Palins dc visit…

    By Alexander Mooney
    CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sarah Palin has firmly remained in the media spotlight since her bid for the vice presidency ended four months ago, but the Alaska governor embraced a decidedly lower profile when she travels to the nation’s capital this weekend.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin speaks at the meeting of the National Governor’s Association in December.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate scheduled a busy itinerary of closed-door events and face time with congressional Democrats and Republicans.

She also announced earlier this week she’s making the 4,500-mile trek from Alaska to Washington primarily to attend the Alfalfa Club Dinner Saturday night — an annual closed-door roast of the nation’s political elite.

But it’s what’s missing from Palin’s schedule that is causing more than a few heads to turn. In a city that is ground-zero for national political journalists, Palin has not scheduled a single media interview or indicated she will hold a press conference.

“She has requested we do not schedule any interviews for her,” said Bill McAllister, Palin’s communications director. Instead, McAllister said, Palin is traveling to Washington to lobby senators to approve certain infrastructure projects for Alaska in the economic stimulus package.

The move is an unusual one for the high-profile governor, especially one believed to have presidential ambitions, on a visit to Washington, a city where most politicians come to gain a piece of the media spotlight rather than avoid it.

    Don’t Miss
    Palin’s media battle raises eyebrows
    Commentary: Palin understands small-town USA
The decision to avoid cameras also appears to be a marked departure from Palin’s media strategy over the nearly 90 days since the presidential campaign ended. In that time, she granted a number of sit-down interviews with prominent television hosts, magazines and conservative journalists.

Political analysts noted that Palin appeared to adopt a largely adversarial relationship with the national media; using her interviews to criticize what she perceived as unequal and unfair coverage over the course of the presidential campaign.

Analysts speculated that a media-bashing strategy could be an attempt to drum up support from the rank-and-file conservatives with whom she was popular during the campaign.

Palin was in the national headlines to such an extent that she faced criticism from some members of her own party, both publicly and privately, who said she was overexposing herself and potentially endangering her chances of being a credible presidential candidate in 2012 should she decide to run, analysts said.

“When she’s out in public still, at this point, she might do more damage than good, both for the GOP and for herself,” said Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University.

Instead, many Republicans said, Palin should retreat from the national spotlight and work on quietly strengthening her resume as a state executive while slowly building credibility among the Republican elite behind the scenes.

“She needs to demonstrate growth as a politician, as a political leader,” Alex Castellanos, a Republican strategist and CNN contributor, said as Palin dominated the headlines. “You can’t do that if you keep staying in front of us day after day after day as the same person.”

By all outward accounts, it’s a message Palin has heard loud and clear.

They’re a little taken aback by this stance by Palin (which is logical, I suppose, ’cause if the package goes down to defeat, Alaska gets NOTHING) because it, to them, is counter to her “fiscal conservative” image.

It’s crucial that you don’t try to move things along faster than reality allows, or you can wear yourself out. HIS immediate supervisor was ordered to impound the computer and deliver it to the IT guy at our district office, who removed the hard drive and turned it over to the forensic geeks at HQ in Sacramento. It took them 4 weeks to find nothing untoward on the rig, but meanwhile we were without the computer. I had to drive 140 miles round-trip every day to the next available state computer in order to input the daily accounting of payroll and materiel usage as required by state law. Management didn’t blink, they didn’t care–they HAD to comply to a citizen’s FOIA request!

The supper bowl is always a big distraction when it comes to fleshing the public. The Repubs have always slipped in dirty sheets during the annual supper bowl, especially during a election year. There is something appealing about drinking lots of beer, getting off on people hitting each other, starting wars and padding defense spending during the build up of are SB. I hate to say it, but its kind of the American way. Hit them hard and take them out of the game…..

Just think of all the conflicts in Europe over thousands of years. Like Germany and England during the WW2. Now they routinely have peaceful International Foot Ball matches. (soccer) There is a civil nature in Europe for the most part. Its total OK to play a international friendly and end up with a tie, and thats totally cool between boths sides. They both get a point. There doesn’t have to be a winner all the time.

In the USA we have a mind set of, winners and losers. We think that because we are the supper power on the planet, we can steam roll other countries into submission. Largely reinforced with the Supper Bowl, Supper Power mind set. When I was traveling in Europe having many political discussion about the US, it became clear to me that other countries felt like we had a big stick ready to wack them, if they didn’t agree with are might.

In Asia there is a saying that goes like this, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down!”

Do you really think tricky dicky hurt his back? He got to fade away from the public with the sympathy vote. Kind of like Black Water, they get to come home now. How manny Billions did they get? Poor Dicky.

SP got out of town in a perfect time to get away from any questions regarding are AG, I mean St. Crisin’s. Timely. Would be kind of important to question SP about the actions of are AG. Did she put pressure on are AG, would she dare. You Betya!!

THe emails might shed some import truths about about Trig, Trip, Track, and Todd. There is surely a story or 2 buried from public view.

My guess is we will never see those emails. As long as SP over powers the opposition with her big mouth and big stick management style, she will stay in charge. Most people like to fallow a leader, even if this one wrong and is a self proclaimed political pro.
