The Mayor’s Race Looms…
A couple new developments in the upcoming Anchorage mayoral race.
First, Walt Monegan has gotten Gail Phillips, former Republican Speaker of the House on board his campaign as “honorary co-chair.”
A former House Speaker and consummate pol, Gail has all the running-for-office smarts he needs.
Gail’s deep into the Aviation Museum these days and said she doesn’t have time to be a full-time campaigner. Walt is talking to a couple of people about managing his run and reportedly will be making a decision soon.
And, another mayoral candidate, former legislator Eric Croft has his feelers out. I got an interesting little telephone survey the other day about the mayor’s race. While at first the questions were “mayor neutral”, the last four questions directly dealt with Eric Croft. Hmm. The survey itself was a bit, how shall I say, overwhelming. Imagine someone asking you which thing was most important to you, and then listing off like 27 things, rapid fire, that were ALL important to you, and then being expected to come up with just one right then. I wanted to ask if she’d email me the questions and call back the next day. So, I don’t have much confidence that the results of this survey will be particularly helpful or genuinely meaningful, but we do know that someone’s out there asking questions.
With ten (count ‘em TEN) hats in the ring, Anchorage residents smell run-off in the air. If one candidate doesn’t come away with 45% of the vote, then a run-off election will be held between the top two candidates, one of which will surely be conservative Dan Sullivan. The other of which is yet to be determined, but whoever it is will have my full support.
Election day is Tuesday, April 7. The run-off election is Tuesday, May 5. And the deadline for hat-throwing is February 13, so if a couple dozen more conservative candidates want to climb on board, there’s still time!

Could you get any more hats? I sure hope not, too confusing for us down here or over there in the lower…49

Go Walt Go!
AKM, did you ask who was conducting the poll? I was surveyed recently regarding the Knik Arm crossing. It too was ridiculous in its convoluted questions. By the end of the lengthy choices, you’d forgotten what the question was. I made the poor guy repeat so many times, I think we were both exhausted in the end. Worst phone poll I’ve ever taken and was surprised to find out it was by Dave Dittman, one of our long-time pollsters.
Made it very clear though that I was not for that bridge to nowhere. Funny how the top of KABATA jumped ship when pressed for detailed explanations of how the money had been spent so far. Knowing one of the guys personally gives me plenty of cause to distrust them.
They are not permitted to reveal who is paying for the poll. I did ask anyway. No dice. AKM
I know this is OT, but I couldn’t resist- from the Alaska Ear:
“CUT IT OUT . . . Really, darlings, those suggestions by comment writers on adn.com that the governor offer herself as a sacrifice to appease the volcano are just rude.”
Bwa ha ha ha:-)
Did you see this mention of the new road to nowhere? Talk about a scary, hopefully skewed poll.

Keep in mind, Walt Mongan may have been an excellent pubic safety manager, and handled the recent slanders about him admirably, we don’t know much about his stance on other issues.
I’m looking at Croft, Selkregg and possibly Claman as more experienced and progressive potential mayors.
Like, barf me with a spoon, with that headline on Palin LOL

Betcha he is for ‘open and transparent government’……(wink)
yeah, I’ll vote for Walt…and I don’t even live there!
@mwThatOne…all winking aside, I agree, after all he’s been through with The Palin, he would like nothing more than open and honest government. I hope he wins for the sheer enjoyment of watching Palin squirm.

Neither do I, so I’ll donate instead. I can do that in my pajamas.
New thread!
I don’t know Walt’s stand on specific issues, but I know he is for the people.
Maybe it’s time for Anchorage to implement (or experiment with) ‘Instant Runoff Voting’…everyone votes for their top 3 in order of who most represents their outlooks.. 1-2-3…the candidate with the most ‘ones’ win, if it’s close, tally up the 2′s until there is a clear majority.
