Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Bedtime in Alaska – Naked Moose!

Go figure.  I hadn’t seen Brian the moose in over a month, and now he’s shown up twice this week!  And there’s some big news to report!  In the yearly calendar of a moose, there are a few events that are really worthy of note.  For cows, there’s mating season, and birthing season.  For bulls there’s mating season, and this….the dropping of the antlers.

Yup, Brian showed up sans those attractive appendages he sported just last week.  After mating season, Brian and all other males drop their antlers to conserve energy for the winter.  They will regrow them with a velvety covering of felt in the spring .  Each year, the antlers grow back larger and more interesting than the year before.  Immature males may keep their antlers all winter.

I’m sure it’s a relief, especially for older males who sport huge antlers, to shed them.  It’s easier to run through trees, and less weight to carry around.  But there’s still something odd about seeing them in this condition.  It’s almost like they’re running around naked.  Maybe Brian was feeling a little frisky for Valentine’s Day and decided to pose for naked pictures?  I had to see.

I wanted to get a nice closeup of the missing antlers, so I grabbed the camera, the Windex and a paper towel, rubbed it on the window, and sure enough, he trotted right over.  I wondered if the window washing trick would work a second time, and it did.  So, here’s Brian, posing in the buff.  If there are children in the room, you may need to shield their eyes.

Naked Brian.

Naked Brian.

Creepy naked Brian.

Creepy naked Brian.

The Full Monty.

The Full Monty.

And a Happy Valentine’s Day from Brian and Brenda, me, Spouse and ’Buf’ the dog to all you wonderful Mudflatters out there!

Well, AKM I would be really offend if he didn’t have such a buff hot body. Wow. Nudie Brian Calender?

AKM -Totally off topic. I have a friend who runs http://www.pacfi.org/ and org that raises funds and awareness for CF. PA based, but… Bob said “I’ve been busy trying to get enzymes and medications into Gaza via CF Worldwide — there are 53 kids with CF who have no meds or enzymes due to the bombings. It’s not something PACFI normally does, but CF Worldwide asked for our help so we’re on it.”

CF is of course, Cystic Fibrosis and those 53 kids would/will/could die without enzimes that make their digestive track absorb nutrition (that’s why CF kids are usually so small and frail).

Anyway, he’s going to be emailing me ways people can help. Not at all Alaska related, but could I post when he tells me what’s needed? My email is here somewhere, or post within. Just figured I’d ask.

Happy VDay to all. And Brian, smoochies all around. Wink.

Paula, This sounds like a perfect topic to be brought over to the forums. Part of the reason that the forums exist is to guide off-topic, but worthy comments/ideas/suggestions to a format where people can go, find them again, and add to that particular discussion. I’ve slacked off about reminding people about this, so I’m going to post something tonight in the daily wrap up about the forums, and how/when to use them. Thanks for asking! AKM

Great pictures. What a magnificent creature! Am I being paranoid to worry that he’s getting too domesticated for his own safety? I don’t know how big a range an adult male moose has, but if he’s in the habit of scrounging your compost pile, might he start also regularly visiting cabins of hunters who would shoot him? Palin and her “moose stew” come to mind. I’ve learned not to report wild life sightings to hunters, because they’er all too eager to blast away at the animals I enjoy observing/photographing.

You raise a good question. My plans to have a contained compost pile will go into effect this spring. It’s actually not a good idea to have one exposed. It can draw all kinds of critters, including bears. Definitely NOT something to want in your yard or anywhere around people. This would be my second season with the compost pile. Up until this winter, there haven’t been any visitors. The fact that it’s frozen like a rock means I can’t really move it, so it’s there until spring.

Don’t worry about Brian getting in the way of a hunter. I live far from hunting territory, and far from busy roads so as far as urban moose go, he’s in pretty good shape. AKM

Thanks for our Valentines Brian, all innocent and cuddly.

Here is an article by Maia Nolan, writer and university writing teacher, arguing that deciding to elect Attorneys General is a mistake. It is printed in Alaska Dispatch and in her blog, I Own the Sidewalk. It’s well written, though I don’t agree with her conclusion that the main drive to change the system is really to punish Sarah for wanting to be V. P. This last snotty sentence cheapens all her previous careful reasoning- so maybe she’s not such a good writer after all?

    http://www.alaskadispatch.com/tundra-talk/9-talk-of-the-tundra/771-lets-not-all-go-jumping-on-the-elect-the-ag-bandwagon

I have posted a link to the Dispatch version because it crisply readable black on white, not blurry white on color. Yes, I know you can turn the background color off, but you then lose all background everywhere else- such as the grey buttons that let you page through a slideshow. Toggling off and on just to read one article is way too much trouble.

Thanks so much, AKM, for keeping Mudflats a clean, readable and welcoming space for imperfect eyes!

    ROFL….

OOH I love it!!! I love what they put….
    from ADN.com….

“In Florida, a travel writer and Web site designer named Jane Townsend read about Emmonak and started a blog of her own, collecting stories about the region and listing ways to donate money and food. She called her site “Anonymous Bloggers,” a poke at the complaints Palin made about her unnamed, online critics.”

    GOOOOOOOOOOOO Jane!!! GOOOOOOO Anonymousbloggers.com!!!

ROFL, I wonder what SP has to say about that….so much for her complaining about all y’all NOW!!! WOOOO HOOOOO

I’ve said it before and I will say it again…

If it weren’t for all you MUDPUPS and Anonymous Bloggers the YK Delta, atleast Nunam Iqua for sure, wouldn’t be getting the help we desperately need!!! QUYANA CAKNEQ a million times over!!!!

OK now my important lesson learned from delivering 11 boxes of food to needy families tonight…

After a blizzard…. know where the snow drifts are BEFORE you go out in the dark and try to figure out the maze/obstacle course of gigantic snow drifts to get to peoples houses!!!

ROFL I was going in circles we have some drifts that are over 20 feet high. My hubby was helping me tonight and he was following me on his snowmachine, I had my snowmachine with the sled behind it full of boxes and bags of food. I can just imagine him shaking his head at me as I am driving in circles trying to figure out how to get to houses, trying to avoid NOT ONLY the drifts BUT ALSO the helical piers (PIPES/ANCHORS) for the water sewer lines sticking up outta the snow everywhere. It was like a maze/obstacle course. And then some peoples houses had 10 to 20 foot drifts around them so I had to figure out how to get down the drifts so I could go UP their stairs. HEE HEE it was just fun.

OOOH did I mention I was doing all of this in the DARK??? Atleast it was warm, didn’t even need snow pants, but did remember my boots this time. It’s 31 outside right now.

What a night. But I love it!! Even though I probably used an extra gallon of gas going in circles, I was laughing (ok and cussing sometimes shh don’t tell LOL) trying to figure out how to get where I needed to go!! But the families were soo HAPPY, and so relieved. Seeing their smiles and hearing their thank you’s just makes my day. I feel like Santa kinda!! LOL

I hope that it makes y’all’s day too!! Because if it wasn’t for you all I wouldn’t be going in circles delivering food

    OK ….OT

On a previous thread y’all were talking about Valentines Day… well I gotta tell you I am already having a WONDERFUL Valentines Day. My hubby went to Emmonak today to cash his check and brought back the most WONDERFUL Valentines Presents…. wanna know what he got me??

    Guess!!

OK you’ll never guess…. heee hee, I am ecstatic!! I got 5 dozen eggs, and 10 lbs of fresh potatoes!! WOOO HOOO I love it!! I am already dreaming and drooling thinking about what I am gonna make. Already boiling eggs as I type this, for breakfast and potato salad tomorrow. MMMM maybe a quiche!! haven’t had that for a long time. OOOH egg salad sandwich!!! mmmm the list just goes on and on. oooh homemade Cream of Potato and Sausage SOUP!! mmmmm

The only way he coulda topped that was if he could have brought back a green salad then I’d be in HEAVEN!! That is definitely one thing I truly miss, is fresh veggies. When we go to Anchorage, I eat salad EVERY DAY sometimes for LUNCH and DINNER LOL.

Ok, I think this post is getting toooooo long. So I am gonna go check on my eggs and flip through my cook book and see what other wonderful things I can make now!!

    QUYANA CAKNEQ AGAIN mudpuppies!!!

I still have 7 families that need to be adopted for the winter. Meaning an individual/family can adopt a family and send them packages directly without having to go through the food drive. This way you can communicate directly with the family. I have all their names and addresses and some families that have already been adopted are now writing back to the adoptive families. I have received emails about letters of thanks sent from families here.

Additionally, I have a list of what each family is specifically needing. So if there is anyone who would like to adopt a family please email me at nunamiquayouth@yahoo.com and I will give you all the information.

Bristol Palin goes “On The Record”

From the website, Moms For Sarah Palin

“Next week Greta Van Susteren will have The Palin Family “On The Record” including Bristol Palin on her new adventure of motherhood.

Greta has always stood up for women in politics saying that you don’t have to agree with their politics but there isn’t a reason to be mean. That said I would think that Greta will do a good interview with Sarah Palin and her family. I guess if you are respectful then you get the interviews, what an interesting concept in today’s world.

Should be an interesting interview. “On The Record” airs week nights on the Fox News channel @ 9pm central time.”

I expect that Tripp will make his debut appearance in front of the cameras when this is broadcast on Monday evening, 16th February 2009.

I guess that means that Bristol finally gave birth to the REAL Tripp sometime this month (February), and has lost most of her baby belly. Sorry about the crummy link in my post above. I did it through a Yahoo search on Greta+Palin+Bristol+Judge plus I don’t remember.

Then I went to Greta wire to try to find it, and lo and behold, she’s apparently got interview from ALaska stuff up already! Not that I’m trying to promote traffic, ’cause I’m not.

But I had trouble linking to actual, well, stories. All I could get to was short blurbs and the comments on them. Completely non-edifying.

It still seems there are no pictures of Tripp!!! Unbelievable.

Anyway, any intrepid souls who go over there, if you can find and corroburate (or not?) and elaborate on anything I thought I saw, comments are eagerly awaited.

Congrats, Ripley!!! Way to go- Yahoo!! A great Valentines present for you:-)

2010 Moose Calendar, anyone? That’s after a Brian mug (with antlers), moose pjs in royal blue/gold…

Careful there, AKM. Brian just might absorb bad vibes if you are thinking he is creepy without his showy antlers and who knows what detrimental effects a blow to a moose’s self esteem might have, living in the wild as he does…

Keep on thinking, ” Brian is beautiful, Brian is beautiful…”

I am pretty sure he likes you, maybe even in an improper way, the way he approaches when you “rub the glass”. I think that is just amazing! At the least it shows some degree of intelligence and curiosity from a creature who, along with most all creatures not human, were considered by scientists until only recently, not to have the capacity for such things. Even now it seems they are only admitting abilities in animals that they just can’t deny because the data is finally there (like some making tools.) This really makes me wonder about the sum total of scientific facts, as we “know” them. We humans are just so arrogant. I mean why did this stuff even need to be studied? We have known since forever, that a mother cat will risk or even give her life, to save her babies. Not all cats, of course. But THAT is not just instinct. There are so many many examples. Anyone who has ever loved a pet of any kind knows that they are far more in total that humans have traditionally wanted to recognize. No doubt, because they think doing so would somehow diminish that great stature of superiority that humans apply to themselves, although I think just the opposite is true. Seeing the amazing capabilities of animals just reinforces in me the belief that we humans, too, have far more powers and talents and raw brain power than we recognize in ourselves. “It’s all connected.” Our life, our intelligence, our talents, human and “animal” alike, all comes from the same place.

Happy Valentines to all you Wonderful Mudpups & AKM & Brian!

Love the pictures of Brian, what a hunk of a guy! How does that work though, regarding moosets and Brianettes? Do the babies only hang out with the Momma Moose, or would Brian be banding with them as a family unit to be able to bring them around AKM’s compost pile? Sure relieved that he’s safe from hunters and busy highways.

    Hi mudflats!

I’m wondering if you may have 2 differant male moose judging by your photos. The last photos of Brian showed a small set of antlers, almost looked like new growth antlers. The photos of Brian in the fall seemed to me, if I recall correctl,y had a much larger rack than the last photos you took of him a month ago. I couldn’t find the photos of Brian in the archives from last fall. I could be wrong but you might like to review all your photos of Brian.

Regardless, great photos! I always get a chuckle.

P.S. Have you ever heard of moose referred to as “swamp donkies”? We Canadians refer to them as those now and again. :-)

i still think you should pen a children’s book about brian…i know a great artist who could do the drawings of brian…

Why drawings? I’ll bet there are enough photos of Brian for a book alá Stranger in the Woods.
