The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Another Volume in the Sarah Palin Library…

trailblazer

Yes, kids it’s another Sarah Palin biography.  First we had “Sarah – How a Small Town Girl Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment on Its Ear” written by long time Wasilla buddy Kaylene Johnson.  It came out long before Palin’s VP nominatioin, and sat in the Costco in Anchorage in giant stacks.  I don’t know how much interest there was in it at the time, but there weren’t too many Alaskans that I knew that were all excited about a fluff piece on the governor.

sarahbook

Then, of course, are the rumors that a book by Sarah herself (read: Sarah’s Ghostwriter) will fetch an outlandish sum rumored to be a cool $11 million, whenever she can figure out how to tiptoe around that pesky Alaska State Ethics Act that says that while she is governor, she can only earn money being a governor.

And now this.  An “unauthorized biography” with input from her parents, Chuck and Sally Heath, and her sister Heather.  There will undoubtedly be fodder enough between its covers to keep the media busy for a long time to come.

My favorite quote, and one I shall be tempted to resurrect for a variety of uses  was this:

“Sarah made one slip-up – but [she] dampened suspicion by explaining it away.”

It’s fun to think up all the different scenarios to which one could apply this little sentence.  But this time, it applied to the fact that she wanted to keep her pregnancy secret from her children because:

“Not knowing in my own heart if I was going to be ready to embrace a child with special needs – I couldn’t talk about it.”

So when one of her daughters actually found Trigg’s ultrasound pictures, so the story goes, she “explained it away.”

The other reason for lying about the fact she was pregnant?

“Not discussing the pregnancy with her daughters, she felt, would shorten the process and spare them from unwanted attention.”

Liiike taking them out of school for weeks and bringing them on the campaign trail, having them participate in interviews with the media, and having Great Van Susteren talk to one of them on camera about her own out-of-wedlock teen pregnancy? Like that?

We also discover in the new book that a pregnant Bristol Palin, was pulled out of her own high school, away from the baby’s father, and sent to Anchorage where she was a not only a full-time student, but held down jobs at not one, but two espresso stands at the same time. I can’t even go on…

You can read the blurb, or the dissection of the blurb by The Immoral Minority for further insight.

*Question to self – Am I actually going to have to buy this book?  And if so, what dust jacket can I find to cover it over, so nobody will think I’m actually reading it?  Don Quixote perhaps?  Or that perennial Alaskan favorite, The Lyin’ the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The remark seems odd to me. If she is Trig’s mother Wow SP is such a selfish b++ch! As a parent of three girls myself I would want to prepare my children for the birth of a special needs child….not wallow in the me, me, me muck. Her duty to her other children would have been to share the knowledge of Trig’s condition in order to prepare them. As usual her response is all about Sarah…….and I believe she made it up.

And I am still trying to figure out where God’s divine purpose fits into the above statement by SP as well……..perhaps I do not understand because I am a disbeliever.

The People Magazine teaser for the book reminded me of another Palin issue. I looked through the Palin tax/financial statement put out by the campaign but don’t recall seeing anything about paying payroll taxes for their nanny.

Extended family is in abundance, and while they have helped Sarah and Todd Palin raise their children – enabling her to serve as governor and pursue her political career last fall during the presidential campaign – the couple hired a Wasilla nanny to help out at home, the book reveals.

A lot of politicians seem to get tripped up by home employee taxes.

At a first read of that line, I thought she meant she might have considered abortion. Not very Palin like at all. I know people with special needs children, and they have never once said for a moment that they didn’t think they could love or embrace there child. Her statement is selfish, and clearly says a lot about her. that poor baby. God forbid he ever see that book when he is older, or have some mean hateful person say something like “your mother wasn’t sure she even wanted you”

    And then this quote…

“Not discussing the pregnancy with her daughters, she felt, would shorten the process and spare them from unwanted attention.”—Unwanted attention?!?!?! How is knowing that their mother is pregnant and that they are going to have another brother/sister going to cause them unwanted attention. Just like she didn’t tell them that she accepted McCains offer of VP running mate. She didn’t tell them that either.

Does she ever think of her children and their well being? Thats a serious question, and if anyone can prove me otherwise that would be super. Because I can’t find any insistence when she actually puts her children needs first. And I’ve been following her very carefully. In search of something that says she is actually a woman who cares about advancing the status of all woman and not just herself.

King County is in the rural part of West Texas. There are probably only a few hundred residents in the county. West Texas (especially the panhandle) is a big time conservative area. I went to undergrad in Lubbock, and even the university has a right-leaning agenda. Those people wouldn’t vote for a Democrat even if Jesus was running as one. The moral thing is just a cover for the fact that there are still a lot of racist people in that part of the state as well.

Yes, DINO’s family, and family should be off-limits, like Obama says; however, I would argue that DINO is of age and has put herself into the limelight. If you don’t want attention, you avoid it, it’s that simple.

DINO because if GINO were really a mother perhaps her underage and unmarried daughter would have had better supervision, and hence, not pregnant at 17.

They don’t care about helping the poor and the needy; they care only about abortion. Hence, they will vote for any candidate who claims to be against abortion, even if that person is evil. I agree that racism most likely played a part in those 8 Texas votes, but it is easier to say “more moral” because it sounds less racist.

Alaskan’s love their coffee, we can be just as crazed over a good cup of ol’ joe just like those in the Pacific Northwest. In Anchorage, they have coffee stands and/or drive thru coffee carts on just about every corner, not to mention the coffee houses. Lot’s and lot’s of coffee drive thrus. When it’s dark, freezing cold and or freezing wet, we drink lot’s of coffee and tea.

Although the drive thru coffee stands in Anchorage can be dangerous at times, due to the high crime rate in Anchorage. They do have their Gangs that have come up from L.A. and it at times, can get quite violent. I would not want my pregnant teenage daughter to be working at any of the coffee stands in Anchorage during the winter months, due to the many dark hours and the gang members. Dangerous to say the least.

Anchorage is a big city with it’s fair share of violent killings that are mostly alcohol and gang/drug related. For those of us from outside of Anchorage, Anchorage is quite different then what most of Alaska is about. It’s big, it’s dirty and it’s violent….it’s NOT what Alaska is really about.

Thinks it will hurt states because there will be things states will be beholden to after the stimulus is over. No time to study it. She is concerned that Obama is not quite there yet understandin’ the energy needs. Greta is giving Sarah credit for writing to the president to tell him how important the pipeline is. I thought I saw a flash of (what?) exasperation/annoyance/fear on Bristol’s face when Gov. Palin loomed over her with the baby….and that was all she wrote. It wasn’t Bristol’s interview any more. Gov. Palin seems to home in on cameras, bright lights, and microphones like a moth.

I’m guessing that it is Sarah’s mother who has stepped in to help with Bristol and the baby. Anyone remember how Palin’s parents were interviewed and talked about how the place was piling up with gifts and how the nursery was ready..then Palin’s father yelled out to Bristol “what’s the name going to be” to which Bristol responded “Oscar….” and then ” We don’t know yet”. Sounded like Bristol was right at home at THEIR home. My guess is that Sarah stepped in as the interview was happening, took the baby from HER mom and walked in on the interview with baby in arms to get attention. Watching the interview was crazy fun despite reeking of contrived spontaneity. It was mostly Greta framing questions for Bristol’s, almost monosyllabic, replies. At one point Greta elicited Bristol’s comment that people who questioned the official version of the Palin pregnancies were “evil”. Sarah “dropped in” with the baby AKA Tripp towards the end. There was a mention of the other grandmother(Levi’s mom) being at the location as well but nothing else. We got to see a few snapshots of the baby & Levi, the baby, Sarah-Bristol & the baby, etc.

They also had an interview w/Sarah done on Sunday when Sarah got to regurgitate all the GOPer talking points. Pretty banal stuff.

B said she told parents about her pregnancy last summer….the book says B was sent to Anchorage to live with her aunt and uncle “last year” when she worked at two espresso bars while pregnant, and that Levi would come visit her with flowers and take her out to dinner. She was supposedly in school then also. I’m a bit confused. By ‘last year” do they mean last fall? But wasn’t she on the campaign trail with mama bear? So do they mean last winter, when she could have been pregnant with Trig?

That interview was so painful. She’s not very articulate and it’s probably because Mama Bear was standing in the wings. Surprise visit, my eye. Did you see how SP crouched over her when she made her entrance, like a vulture? Then she stole her daughter’s thunder. Shameful.

I admit I had to partake of some “Dutch courage” before watching the interview and that was only 4pm here.
Finally we see baby “Tripp”. He’s very cute but somewhat small for a baby that was 10 days overdue and now 7 weeks old. Sure enough there were family pictures with him looking newborn but those were not taken by Pox News and could have been 1 month ago.
I watched BP’s body language rather closely. On most if not all questions she either looked “up right”, signifying visual reconstruction – lying in other words, or she looked down to the point it looked like her eyes were shut – again lying.
I’d say momma Grizzly had coached her on the answers. Overall she looked most uncomfortable and probably wanted to be anywhere else but there.
Then – “oh what a surprise” momma Palin pops in with baby Tripp – Greta had no idea – allegedly (ho hum) that SP was going to appear. This was Palin stagecraft at its least convincing.
Later, at the Iron Dog, SP hogs the mike and acts like she’s on a GOP rally – blah, blah, blah.
Greta van suck-up then asked Piper a direct question and as Piper tried to formulate an answer Palin cut in to spew more talking points – she couldn’t keep her mouth shut for 2 seconds and interrupted her own kid.
Palin, from one mother to another (pretend one) – you STINK!
And please let me take this opportunity to thank all mudpuppies here for helping me keep my sanity – in my corner of the world SP isn’t much news and your lively discussions help me feel normal in hawk-watching this be-ach in case she really has a shot at 2012 in which case I’ll be planning my funeral.

I am appalled that she said she knew Trigg had DS and a heart problem and yet she flew all the way to Texas with amniotic fluid leaking, and then didn’t even attempt to go to a hospital for at-risk newborns. “Like many intrigued by the emergence of Sarah Palin on the national scene, I looked forward to reading the anticipated books about Governor Palin’s life and achievements.

Foolishly, I snapped up the first post-election book, Trailblazer: An intimate biography of Sarah Palin, by Lorenzo Benet. Never have I been so disappointed. Trailblazer is more anti-Palin stereotyping than anything else. It could have been written by someone in the Obama campaign or their surrogates on MSNBC, CNN, or any of the other Obama support groups.

I would not recommend this amateurish book to anyone other than the Obama people who are not interested in reality. The book is unorganized, poorly researched (I’m being charitable), and seems to be pure propaganda on a scale that would make Joseph Goebbels proud.

Benet goes so far as to feign disbelief in Palin’s assertion, shared by many notwithstanding Al Gore’s musings, that global temperatures are related to solar activity.

His analysis of the vice-presidential debate between Palin and the factually challenged Biden is farcical. Suffice it to say that he was watching a different debate than the one I watched. The number of errors made by Biden in that debate was staggering. Governor Palin made only one…mispronouncing general McKiernan’s name. I could go on and on.

I will close by saying that anyone who wants to read an objective and factual account of Governor Palin should not waste their money on this deceptive book. One can obtain the same anti-Palin claptrap by watching the Keith Olbermann show and save their money in the process. Trailblazer: An intimate biography of Sarah Palin is neither intimate nor a biography.”

OK, after reading what you mudpuppies had to say about the Fox interview I went to the FoxNews site (felt dirty just doing it, and not in a good way) and cued up the interview. I sat watching Bristol and I found myself wanting to cry for her. As somebody else said here, she seems very sweet.

I saw the sweetness, but what I mostly saw was a girl trapped by the life her parents have chosen for her. Did anybody else notice how her eyes kept shifting, avoiding the intrusion of the camera? How when she voiced the careful platitudes of abstinence and loving, strong family she tended to look away? And all the while she was talking about how having baby Tripp was “her” choice, and then about how her life had basically ended before it really began. The dichotomy set my teeth on edge. If having a baby was “her” choice she would not be feeling that her life had been stolen from her. She would feel it had changed, true, but she would still feel it was hers.

She just sounded so trapped–by circumstances, by the values she has been taught she should believe in, by the love she feels for the child who is also the symbol of her imprisonment, by family loyalty, by the fact that all her industry to the contrary–and that bit about working in two coffee shops and going to school and being pregnant sounds a little overdone, to me–she and Levi are still children in their parents’ houses, bound by rules that in Bristol’s case seem to be beginning to chafe.

I listened to her trying to defend the idea of abstinence (as she has been taught) and then bursting out that it’s just “unrealistic” and I thought, “Okay, she’s starting to think for herself,” and I was afraid for her.

I’ve been in that position–trapped in a place where you are forced to abide by bizarre and unrealistic rules, and where you voice your objections at very real physical and/or emotional peril. Until she got pregnant she had college, and that house she spoke of, and a career to look forward to–escape. But now there’s Tripp, and much as she might love him, having a baby, particularly as a single mother, is difficult and draining. I know this because I am a single mother, and I had the benefit of the house, the career, and the age thing going for me, and it was STILL hard.

I really, really hope that there’s somebody in her life who can be a safe place for her–a place where she doesn’t have to be “strong,” and “wonderful,” and “a great Momma,”–a place where she can be sad, and lost, and confused, and angry sometimes. I listen to her saying that she’s had to “grow up fast,” and I hear the echo of her mother saying the same thing, and I get so angry at the sheer unreality of it. We do not “grow up fast” because of circumstances. We may rise to an occasion, but it’s a temporary thing. Deep down, we know that we are still the children we were before adulthood was demanded of us. We are only pretending. I hope Bristol has a place to be real. I hope it both for her sake, and for Tripp’s sake. All the lip service to him being wonderful to the contrary, it’s very clear that he’s very much seen as Bristol’s just desserts for not abstaining–he’s like a cute little Scarlet Letter. No baby deserves that. Bristol needs a friend who is mute and has excellent hearing.
