Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Palin and Murkowski Have Private Meeting…

Here’s an interesting little nugget.  Seems like Sarah Palin and Lisa Murkowski had a little meeting in the treehouse and pulled up the ladder.

Yesterday, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski met privately with Gov. Sarah Palin, and emerged from the meeting hopeful about a 2010 race to keep her Senate seat.

“I’m raising money and I would certainly hope to have the support of Alaskans for a second term but we haven’t made a formal announcement yet.”

Murkowski demurred when asked whether she thought the governor would challenge her, saying she doesn’t know “what the governor intends”.

We may never know what transpired in this private meeting, but it would have been quite interesting to have been a fly on the wall.

Can we assume if Murkowski doesn’t “know what the governor intends” then that means that the governor wouldn’t or didn’t say she wasn’t going to run? Does this change the odds on the running bet here in Alaska that Palin will not, in fact, run for anything in 2010 but will pass Go, collect $200 (or an $11 million book deal) and go straight to a presidential run?

It is my hope that she will, in fact, run for president, because she doesn’t have a chance. On the other hand, if she runs for Governor again, she may just win. There are enough Republicans here to pull it off, and that frightens me. I just don’t think I can live with her as Governor for a second term. Oh, and is there a countdown clock for her yet? How many days left?

But if she loses she’ll probably go on to become CEO of Focus on the Family or some other rightnut org and be able to raise massive funds for more weirdos. Isn’t it “enlightenment” time for the USA. phobe, she will have to run against a whole bunch of other GOPers before she ever faces a Dem. She isn’t the only one with ambition. And let’s face it, how many states would she win a Rep primary in? There are very few states that are primarily fundamental (Louisianna, Mississippi… ). She -nor most of the GOP potentials lean to far right. Even if Obama is a disaster, most of us would vote for a disaster over an end time freak.

    that election happens.

Every where I go collecting for the Food Drive, including the Post Offices, people

rural villages. They get it right away, want the websites info for details.

I think that is going to stick in people’s memories as Katrina has. [Although I am

It’s pretty clear from the recent press conference with state legislators and yesterday’s Yukon Delta escapade that the job of governing Alaska is just an annoying sideline now left mostly to aides, and that the position, like the kids, is used as a prop and backdrop for what she imagines in her pea brain (encouraged by sycophants and users like Franklin Maggot Graham) is a viable run at the presidency in 2012.

What can we do but sit back and watch the drama (no, make that farce) unfold? Every stupid thing she does will be chronicled in detail by anonymous bloggers– some particularly egregious ones will be picked up by MSM, and one or more of the Gates will get her long before the primary (see Jindal secretly smiling). Who knows? Maybe even Cathy Baldwin Johnson will talk eventually?

To summarize: no second run for governor (bo-ring), no run for the senate (might break a nail), just pallin’ with right wing nut jobs until the day she trades in the ermine-collared parka for an orange jumpsuit and they all abandon her.

  14. 14
    264 CrayonsNo Gravatar says:

With Jindal’s refusal of part of the stimulus money, I expect SP to be right on his coattails. Word is even if he rejects it the legislature can overrule it and we get the money anyway. Then he looks like a true conservative candidate for 2012. Should be interesting to hear what he has to say in response to Obama’s speech on Tuesday.

He ego is that big; fortunately her inability to tell the truth and her lack of ethics will have caught up to her by then. The tax thing this week was just the tip of the tax iceberg- there is still the family travel at state expenses, the state vehicle she drives, etc. Add that to the Monegan and Colberg firings, and the general incompetence of the Palin/Parnell administration, there’s a lot of good material.

    OFF TOPIC
I posted this on the forum – but thought it may be useful for some Mudpuppies over here too

Just an FYI which already may be known to quite a few –

A couple months ago I visited with local library and found that our state has on line access to Audio Books from multiple in-state libraries. Since then I have “burned” several books (Odd Hours – Ken Koontz / Echo Burning – Lee Child / Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain etc)

My understanding is that one (or more) libraries will upload an Audio Book and any library member in the state can download it to their PC, then based on copyright – the book can be burned to CD or MP3 for patron listening. Some books can be downloaded by several patrons during the same lending period, again, based on permissions, allowing more patrons to enjoy.

It is a wonderful service for house-bound patrons, visually impaired, commuters, or those of us that can multi-task at work.

Our State on-line audio library has a wide variety of books from Childrens to Non-Fiction Historical to New Political to Learning a Language to Mystery and Suspense.

Contact your local library to see if this service is available in your state – and pick up a batch of disc’s – since many of the books are unabridged.

Lisa Murkowski is articulate and bright. I may not agree with her politics all the time, but she has also traveled far and wide in this state – something Governor Fur Face has not done. LM is well liked by many Alaskans because they’ve SEEN her in person, and she wasn’t promoting her own agenda with cameras and spokespeople. When Lisa travels in AK, she’s just Lisa Murkowski the senator.

I don’t think SP could win – it would cost a LOT of money (Murkowskis are well established and well connected in AK, esp. Southeast AK since they are from Ketchikan). Palin has no real base in SE AK, and she’s not making herself popular in the bush, either. Two big strikes against Fur Face right there – rural AK, and SE AK. And if Anchorage tips to Murkowski, it’s all over. SP could only carry the Interior with any certainty.

She is constantly bragging about executive experience, something she would have to give up if she didn’t run for Governor in 2010. And if she runs and loses, then that doesn’t look good on her resume either. So my take is that she won’t run against LM but probably will try for Gov or something else that gives her executive experience. She already has the whack job base – she needs moderates, independents and intelligent Republicans. She has a lot of folks behind the scenes giving advice and pulling strings, so there is a master plan developing. She’ll try Hail Mary’s too since she’s so fond of McCain.

Iowa and New Hampshire, are pretty much out, and I don’t even think that she can take South Caralina. SInce it almost all of the states are winner to take all, she would probably be effectively done within the first month. Although since the media seems to love to see what crazy thing she is going to say next and Sara loves the spotlight, she would probably technically remain in long after the math dictatated that she was done, even if her campaign was completely broke.

We’re seeing this run on “sugar daddys.” E.g., Graham, Coale, and the Alfalfa guy (forget his name). She’s playing big time now. Maybe the first was McCain, and look how that panned out. She’s bound to screw up and alienate someone. Also dipping into big money pots is going to attract more attention on those doings.

If we keep the pressure on, one slip could cascade into many. Let’s keep going with the food drive. We’re the ones with the long memories, and staying active will continue the pressure.

    Chicago Tribune:
    by Frank James

The fight for the soul and future of the Republican Party is taking place over the $787 billion economic stimulus.

Every chance they get, congressional Republicans are trying to reclaim the mantle of the anti-tax, anti-spending, small government party. Their nearly monolithic opposition to the stimulus was a perfect opportunity to make the point that they’re no longer the big government, big spending Republican party of the Bush years.

As Politico.com points out, something similar is occurring at the state level with Republican governors, although they aren’t nearly as uniform in their opposition as congressional Republicans.

Some governors, underscoring their adherence to their party’s newly reanimated anti-spending creed are denouncing the stimulus package. But others are able to be less ideologically pure as they lead states where conservatives don’t have the upper hand. The 2012 presidential primaries are the backdrop to all of this.

    An excerpt:

On the one side is South Carolina’s Mark Sanford, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, who refers to the spending package as “a tremendous mistake.”

“The spending plan will prove to be an absolute disaster,” Sanford said in an interview. “The bottom line is that it’s horrible.”

On the other is Florida’s Charlie Crist, the popular first-term governor who appeared on stage with Obama last week to urge passage of the stimulus.

“I support the stimulus plan because, number one, we need it,” Crist told Politico. “Florida sends an awful lot of tax dollars to D.C. and we ought to get some of it back.”

Many Republican governors, including party heavyweights Mississippi’s Haley Barbour, Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, Alaska’s Sarah Palin and Rick Perry of Texas, have taken a hard line against what they say are the debt-increasing measures in the economic recovery bill. But Crist and a few others, most notably California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, have been more receptive to the new federal funds.

To some degree, the varying approaches adopted by Sanford and Crist reflect the unique political environments in which they operate. Sanford represents a heavily Republican state where his message has a resonance it wouldn’t have in Florida, where Crist must contend with a far more competitive two-party landscape and a budget shortfall that could lead to draconian cuts in services.

Nonetheless, their dueling approaches have suddenly designated Sanford and Crist as the two poles of Republican restoration theory–one that calls for a return to core conservative principles and a back-to-basics approach, and another that is more pragmatic and bipartisan in tone.

I think the far-right-wingers underestimate the damage that they are doing to themselves with their Obama-hating. Should Obama succeed in restoring some financial stability and good-will overseas, make progress with the Iraq/Afghanistan situation, their hating and rhetoric will come back to haunt them. It’s hard for them to accept that they are not the majority, but it is true. They are loud, certainly, but still not the majority.

On bad days I get very discouraged about the state of the state of Alaska, particularly after reading about the crazies in Fairbanks who will be wearing their guns proudly in protest of what they see as an erosion of their 2nd Amendment rights. That idea was cooked up in a church, naturally. Guns & God. That’s how Palin and others like her get elected. Of course Obama’s been a tiny bit busy trying to address the economic issues, so I’m not really sure why they are already concerning themselves with what he will or won’t do about guns, but they don’t care about reality. What a relief it will be to leave Alaska in a few months. It can get a person down being surrounded by nutters.

On good days I am able to focus on the fact that it’s possible that the GOP and right-wing & evangelical haters will implode and have to eat crow someday soon. But that’s really the only positive that I can take from this. Our country is in some dire straits and the haters just keep on hating myths and chimeras cooked up by Rush Limbaugh and whatever other loon they listen to.

Does no one think for themselves anymore? My husband and I have been registered Republicans for a zillion years (I changed to Undeclared after SP was put on McCain’s ticket). We don’t vote party, we vote issues. Why are there so few who do that?

SP reminds me alot of Katherine Harris running for US Congress (2006 I think? Senate seat, may have been House).

Except KH started with lots of self-finanaced money. She came out of the box fairly strong with her North Florida base, but could in no way sustain it.

The Repubs will probably have a fairly strong field of contenders, and I just don’t see very many states putting their electoral college votes in Palin’s basket. With all the lip service people gave to gubenatorial experience in the 08 campaign (SP was the only one of the four on the final ticket to have any!),
she won’t come off very well against more experienced governprs of larger states – heck, almost makes me wish Charlie Crist would run.

Oh yeah, and all that campaigning really brought the “whack job” out of her, Katherine Harris, I mean.

But before 2012 is 2010. That’s the deepest and truest thing I will probably say today! Correct me if I’m wrong, but our little missy has a big choice to make for 2010, in fact, it’s a big gamble is what it is, if she wants to remain in politics at the level (or higher) that she is now. She can’t, I’m pretty sure, run for both Gov. AND an AK US congressional seat in 2010. But whatever she’s going to do, she’d going to have to announce fairly soon, I’d think. Two year campaigns are going to become, I’m afraid, the norm. And the election is a mere year and a half away.

But I agree with others – whatever Ms. Murkowski heard from SP in that room is not to be banked upon. Why do I feel that Ms. M knows that?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Alaskans, line up the best slate of Gov. candidates you can, of all stripes and parties. This (2010) will be the year where real mavericks and real “breaths of fresh air” can get elected and start making a difference.

You are very lucky to live somewhere like that. In AK I would guess that the majority of people who register as Independent still vote for Repubs when it comes time to punch the ticket. Alaskans cannot seem to realize that Republicans do not have all of the answers to the Guns/God/Oil issues. The oil folk that we know (work(ed) with) were nearly unanimous in their loathing of Palin and voting against the McCain ticket, and some of them are quite religious, if they can get it and my husband and I can get it, what is wrong with the rest of them? The military folk here, though, they really get to me, and I am surrounded by them. They are absolutely against voting Dem, some were absolutely hateful when I was going door to door for Obama (as if it was personal!), in spite of the fact that their party has treated them like cannon fodder, disposable bodies, refused to acknowledge PTSD, it took Dems to pass legislation that ensured that they would have better care. I just don’t get it! And sadly I do not live in one of the little blue pockets of Anchorage, so don’t get my daily sanity fix via neighbors. This state is so screwed up.

The show is at the Villa Borghese, which I thought was kind a dump. I can’t see the Romans taking time out of their day to peer at photos of Mrs Palin (even without clothes). The deal in Alaska is that if you’re registered Undeclared or Nonpartisan you can choose whichever of the primary ballots you want (the “R” one or the “everyone else but the Rs” one). Since there’s only one ballot in the General election, everyone votes on the same one. I know a fair number of people who switch to Undeclared or Nonpartisan for the 2006 gubanatorial primary race so they could chose the R ballot and screw with the results (I’m pretty sure they voted for Frank, not that it did any good, as we now know…).

If she intends to run for President she can’t run for any other office, even a 2nd term as Governor, and risk either defeat or a close victory. Either of those scenarios puts her dead in the water as far as being President as that shows her to be vulnerable. Running again will allow all of her opponents to drag up anything and everything they can find which will then be used by her Presidential opponents as well.

The best course for her is to try and finish up this term as Governor as best she can (maybe actually accomplish something) and then announce to the world that she is not seeking reelection so she can turn her attention to the 2012 Republican nomination. This way she goes out a winner(?) and gives herself two years to run around the country campaigning before the primaries start.

That’s my take on it at least but who knows what she’ll do. Regardless of how horrible a Governor she is, she has shown to be a good local politician in terms of using her opponents weaknesses to her benefit. While I have a feeling her inexperience in running a national campaign will be a hinderance at first she can buy experienced people to run it for her. She just has to figure out whether she will let them handle her or whether she will hold all the power. Given that she felt handled by McCain’s people I have a feeling that she’ll run the show and in the end that is what’s going to kill her at the national level. She’s a shrewd local politician but it’s a different ballgame in the big leagues.

Isn’t it time that the Federal Government starts looking at taking away these churches tax exempt status? If they want to play politics from the pulpit fine, but if you do then you no longer get tax exempt status. There was a reason churches have that exemption, and that’s because of the separation of church and state. But if they don’t want to play by the rules and try to influence the politics of this country then pony up the taxes, it’s not like we couldn’t use them right about now.

Ok.. this is a bit off topic
But Palin’s potential future run in the political arena seems to be an ongoing, underlying theme..
    so..

i had a wild haired palin thought

In regards to the Republican party (mainly men, actually holding some sort of political ranking) being her most prominent admirerers

Now think about Republican men.. and their wives
Sweet, little cookie cutter smiley show pieces..
These are the guys that grew up watching Maverick and old Western Shoot ‘em ups

Now, as pin headed as they might seem, they are not that stupid
Would they, in their right mind, EVER let a woman.. much less a woman that made them feel tingly and used cutsey phrases, EVER allow her to truly become Commander in Chief of our country?

    No, way jose

Now, see.. she can draw in the crowds and bleeding hearts.. I see it as, get her in the White House, under the Republican label.. and we are home free

Push her outside for press conferences, photo shoots, even high level speeches to the country.. but, behind the scenes, in the board room where the real deal takes place
She, at the head of the table… do you honestly see these Republican big wigs bowing to her (a fiesty little cutey with nice legs) ? Uh no

She is seen as silly and naive, a go-getter no doubt.. but get her in the White House and they will have control of things.. they see her as that “naive and gullible” after all, but popular.. with the American People (well a sector) .. how great is that? Now the real business can take place and they will have a flashy show piece to woo people in
But in their eyes, deep down, she is just a “woman”

She may see this as the respect she so duely deserves.. but it actuality it is a slap in the face..

I think I finally figured out her appeal to the far right wing.. any thoughts?

It’s probably because the Grumpy Old Party MEN are thinking with their little heads–they think she’s popular (because the Palin Calendar was a hugely popular gag gift in December ’08) and that she might give them a blow job while wearing a gun in a church (or some other stupid fantasy). But she did have an affair with her husband’s business partner and never went after the National Enquirer for saying so–maybe they are planning a fundraiser where she sleeps with an old rich guy, and they raffle that off to raise money for the GOP. Not that they would do that, but you never know when they are thinking with the little head.

Here is a question for you all.
You know that loooonnng story that was given during the interview, with all the tiniest details about the night that Bristol broke the pregnancy news to GINO?? Totally contradicts what Sherri Johnston said back in Oct 2008. One could argue that the interview was made up..but along with the article is tons of pics from the Johnston family album. So it looks like there was definite contact between the UK newspaper and Johnston. Guess GINO couldn’t bring herself to say “I was laughing hysterically” when she was told the news. Maybe GVS could do a followup question–why is it that Levi’s mom gave a different version of that night????

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/article47917.ece

“Sarah was at home when Levi and Bristol burst in with the pregnancy stick,” says Sherry, a close pal of John McCain’s running mate.

“But Sarah started laughing—and when Levi and Bristol waved the evidence at her she was was giggling so hysterically she couldn’t stop.

“They had joked a number of times about having a baby, so she thought they were kidding. But when she finally realised it was real she was shocked and her face dropped.” Now Sherry, 42, opens up a side of Palin US voters have never seen—

Things you CANNOT do as a 501(c)(3) organization

These restrictions in no way prohibit officers, members, or employees from participating in a political campaign as private citizens.

Endorse or oppose a candidate—implicit or explicit. Contribute money, time, or facilities to a candidate.
    Coordinate activities with a candidate.
Restrict rental of your mailing list and facilities to certain candidates.
Set up, fund, or manage a Political Action Committee (PAC), established under section 527 of the tax code mainly for electoral activity.
