Trailblazin’ Through the Palin Biography – The Introduction
Ah, you’ve caught me with palms on my face, moving them up and down in a rapid rubbing motion, and then shaking out my arms. That must mean I’ve finished the Introduction of “Trailblazer – An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin.”
That’s right. Just the Introduction. I’ve got to work up to this slowly. There were a couple notable bits in there, and I’ve been mercilessly scrawling, circling, and making large exclamation points in the margins.
So here it is. Speedblogging or….Blogblazing, if you will, the Introduction: (I’ll bold and italicize the passages I quote from the book)
First impression is that this is obviously going to be a bit gooey. Our author seems to be a little swept away, a little star struck, a little… gushy, shall we say. Lorenzo Benet works for People Magazine, and interviewed Palin before the VP nod. Get out the toothpaste, because you’re going to need to brush after the syrupy sweetness that follows, telling us what we can expect from “Trailblazer.”
She’s the tomboy who became a beauty queen, the shy, quiet student who became a broadcast journalist, the young, apolitical mother with the blue-collar husband, who became a controversial mayor, then a regional GOP star who defied the party hierarchy and outlasted all her political enemies to become governor of Alaska, the youngest in the state’s 50-year history. Her journey, no doubt, inspired John McCain to name Sarah his running mate for the 2008 presidential election. That is the story Trailblazer tells.
May I suggest Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, in the classic peppermint? It doesn’t have sweeteners of any kind, so it may seem jarring at first, if you’re not used to it, but if you’re going to try to make it through these installments, you’re going to need to invest in a tube. And some floss wouldn’t hurt either.
So, now we know what we’re up against. Here are some impressions from the rest of the Introduction.
Favorite Palin quote:
“Absolutely, yup, yup,” she replied when asked if she was prepared to serve a heartbeat away from the White House.
Eyebrow Raising Moment:
“Palin went about her business without a security detail, which is how she likes it.” Now hold on just a minute. Stretch your mind back to Palin’s interactions with Mike Wooten. Remember him? He’s the ex-brother in law, and ne’er do well that Palin tried to have fired from the State Troopers. What was the main reason for trying to get him gone? Do you remember? He allegedly threatened to kill her father, and “bring her down.” That’s some pretty strong language. And here’s more from Palin (not in the book)
And he’s still a trooper, and he still carries a gun, and he still tells anyone who will listen that he will never work for that b*tch (me) because he has such anger and distain [sic] toward my family.”
So, why did she get rid of her security detail again when this “ticking time bomb” as she called him, was out to get her and her family? According to Trailblazer, “That’s how she likes it.” I see.
Laugh out Loud Moment:
“Undoubtedly, McCain erred in not letting Palin be herself on the campaign and restricting her access to the media.” (catching breath after laughing episode, and dabbing eyes with a hanky) Yes, I think we’d all have to agree that what would have helped her was more access to the media! Gibson and Couric just weren’t enough. Bring it on!
OK. (Pours a shooter of Pepto Bismol, slugs it down and slams the glass on the table. Wipes pink sticky moustache off on sleeve.) Ready for Chapter One.

Shy, quiet student??? Are you kidding me…I don’t know how you can actually read this book, but kudos…your commentary is on point!
HAHA!!! I can just hear that shot glass hitting the table!
Good luck, my Muddy friend….
You’re killing me. Find an unbalanced table to stick that book under and put me out of my misery.
Don’t do any more AKM. It is above and beyond the call of duty. I am sure not one of us would want to put you through this mental torture.
If I had to read this it would make me projectile vomit.
AKM — do not face your sliding door through which you view Brian while reading this book. When you launch the book because of the infuriating BS I don’t want you (or us) to hear the sound of breaking glass….
AKM – what a brave soul.
I dunno…AKM has an armor of steel (at least from what I can deduce)…so let AKM do all the dirty work and report back here for the fragile among us who cannot foray into the land of Palin!
Thanks AKM for pinching your nose and diving in for the rest of us ….you BRAVE soul….
Benet…smitten is he…like Zeigler…
Flash….Wonder what she puts in those cookies?
Oh, AKM…always the one to think “green”…please recycle when finished. Someone will be in need by the honey-pot and surely we would not want this printed word to go to waste….
Oh dear, AKM of the cast-iron stomach is already developing a Pepto habit! Should Brian do an intervention?
Here’s a reward to you AKM and all us mudpuppies! I just heard on national news Palin is paying back the travel expense for the kiddos!
Whahoo! we got an inch now lets take a mile! I was just beginning to feel sorry for her and thought dear me let the IRS put her out of her misery, lol……us too, from her that is.
You’re gooood. I’m going to enjoy you reading this book!
I read Palin
I have pain
I seek truth
I find shame
I become catatonic
I need a gin and tonic
I read lies

Palin to repay money for kid’s travel

AKM, this is above and beyond the call of duty. I simply cannot stomach this woman any more. Shy and quite, I love that one. And I still do not undertand how anyone that has attend journalism school (and so many of them at that), and still cannot construct a coherent sentence. I would love to see some of her “work” while she was a shy, quite student.
Dang – thought I’d ck. in before dinner……..wish I hadn’t.Nothing personal AKM…….
For a “shy and quiet” person she sure screams “LOOK AT ME” an awful lot…that is…pretty much every day that she is inhaling.
Meh…
I prefer Tom’s of Maine Fennel. Think I’ll go polish off a tube.
Ah, Goalie, she used to be shy and quiet; not so much now…
Yes, she gave up the security detail — while she was “hiding Trigg” if I remember correctly. Which seemed a bit strange on the time line considering they were so threatened by Wooten.
But after all, she is a wolf / moose hunting mamma bear, lipstick smeared pit bull Hocky GRAND-Mom from a-LAS-ka – that can take on BIG OIL and come out on top. What’s one little State Trooper ?
Lets see what else the Palin clan is going to have to pay for? She’s getting her Moose in a Row before the IRS gets into the books …. But don’t ya know – she didn’t do anything wrong !!!

Okay Mudpup’s taking orders…..heh, heh….
Impeach!! I’m glad someone else took the time to read that book thanks for the report! Could it be that Security knew to much? I think that if they are walking beside her protecting her knowing what she is doing every moment would be alittle to much for her. So just let them go! OMG she is unbelievable in her attitude that she is above the law! Hope the Feds get deeper into the story.

She aspired to read the teleprompter, “also.”
heh heh
Is there a long chapter about the tortuous and convoluted college career of the shy, quiet student who became a “broadcast journalist”? Or are there five, very short chapters?
Oh, this is great! It’s like watching a movie! Where’s my popcorn…
hahahhaa, Katie Couric just reported that GINO has to repay the money spent on childrens travel on the evening news.

yeah, and fewer professional witnesses if the Palins get a chance to take him (Wooten) out if need be or if opportunity came up. They be sharp shooters, those Palins, they can take care of their own.
………………………………………
funny not one word on our local news about Palin….. and on the national they only spoke of the childrens travel expenses, they didn’t add on the per diem blow…….so was this done as a press release? or leaked to the national press.
One day, her daughter may write her version of “Mommie Dearest” — or a group of Palin’s former high school friends will get it right. At some point in time, there will be a real expose’ from someone courageous who is close to her.
Yes, I commend AKMuckracker for reading and thank her for giving us a review. I’m curious, but I don’t have the stomach to read the book, much less have it anywhere near me.
Maybe SP is presently coming out of the closet with her political past. Kind of like a do over in some kids game. Wipe the rummers clean with the illusion of honest mistakes and the truth as she sees it.. This could be good.
Lets get to the bottom of all these gates Ms Palin. Let the denial flow from your sole. Youbetya soas allso, let her flow.
I wonder if Mr. Frost has time for another interview. He did a good job with Nixson and the waterGATE cover up.

Thanks AKM for taking this one for the Mudflatter Team. I can see that Trailblazin’ will be real hoot. I may eventually read in when I see it in a dollar store when I’m not looking for it. I rarely shop at dollar stores.
You will of course find the maggoty moose pellets that follow GINO. Much will be revealed in the book. Keep up the good work. Stay strong for AK and the rest of us.
South Side Chicago
Interesting about expensegate, isn’t it? Palin puts out the preemptive strike by having McAlister compare her expenses with Murkowski, to show how much cheaper it is to have a governor without a private jet. Then, later that day, comes the news that Palin has to reimburse the state for $7000 in improper expense billing for her children’s travel. Of course, she ‘voluntarily’ did this (no mention of the citizen complaint that led to the investigation that led to the necessity of refunding the money).
And still, she works from home while the taxpayers buy her $60 of food each day, and while the legislators wait in vain for her to show up and take care of the business of running the state.
Interesting, too, that the person who determined that ‘only’ 9 out of 72 expense filings were improper, happens to be Tim Petumenos, who seemed to have a rather blind eye for ethics violations when it came to Troopergate/Tasergate. By the way, 9 out of 72 is 12% and I think that is a lot, personally. Petumenos may find the rules on expenses quite complex and confusing, but we, the public, seem to find it rather clearcut so far.
Does anyone know the dates she asked to remove her security detail? I tried searching on that once and couldn’t really find the specific dates. I think it would be interesting if that request was in say Feb-March 2008.
Anyone?
Is there a “wheel of fortune” game using politician info and their phrases? the phrase thingy would be so hard, except to the TS drools.
AKM, please do not make yourself sick over this book. Take it in very small doses, and keep the Pepto within hands reach.
@ocliberal (15:57:48) :
I’d have to look around, but I think it was more like summer (July?). There was some rumor that it was connected to complaints about her not having Trig in a car seat and not wanting to be caught doing that, but I don’t know how accurate that is.
When you’re finished with it, I’ll chew it up and stomp it into the muck for ya!

“Absolutely, yup yup!” Sweet Mary Mother of God. Leaves me speechless.
By the time AKM finishes this book, I think by then together we could have sufficient funds together in order to send AKM to rehab. Required for the mental abuse and all the shot glass refills!!!
You can do it AKM!
I am up to chapter nine and I can tell you that the thing certainly does not get any better as you progress.

Oh, I bet she wouldn’t charge Sarkozy a thing, bless her heart.
Any body know if there was a construction loan on the house ?? Is there a current lien ?? Also – whether it’s a residence or commercial building , one of the last “permits” issued is a “Certificate of Occupancy” I know all about Sarah putting a moratorium on construction permits – but – no insurance co. is gonna insure a large building where a lot of people congregate without the certificate in place. Safety standards must be met. Are the fine citizens of Wasilla supposed to take Sarah/Todd’s and his “buddies” word that the building is safe ?? Does it even have a policy in force ?? Who is carrying the Bonds ?? Where is the certificate ??

“Petumenos said “some of the travel raised by the Complaint does not meet this standard,” according to the agreement.”
(huh? uh oh…….there goes Petumenos under the bus….)
“Petumenos was asked to examine the complaint at the same time he was investigating allegations that Palin fired her public safety commissioner over his refusal to let go a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce with Palin’s sister.”
(and let’s give 3 cheers to Mr. Frank Gwartney, 60, who filed the complaint. Do go read the article folks, good stuff, hip hip hooray! we heart and hug you Frank! )

Here it is, ADN has an article, too but about the same. No mention of any baby in any article that I read.
If the Gov feels safer in a big vehicle, then the idiot should get rid of the Jetta and buy one. She has no shortage of fundies (oops I meant “funds”, but isn’t that a pretty good mental slip?) right now. Who was paying the gas? I doubt it was her. She can buy her own vehicle, whatever size, fill it with gas, and LIVE with it like the rest of us. Whiner!
http://community.adn.com/mini_apps/vmix/player.php?ID=3242191&GID=
From the presser: “expenses incurred by Governor Palin is discharging her official duties, notably the per diem she has collected while working in Anchorage, nearly fifty miles away from her home in Wasilla.”
So they are now claiming that the per diem was for spending time in Anchorage, so far away from her home in WASILLA. Has her duty station changed?
The part I forgot before I hit ENTER was this:
She wouldn’t have had the accident if she were living in Juneau as she should be. Commuting between Wasilla and Anchorage is her own ball of wax, and as far as I’m concerned she’s an idiot to commute when she has a perfectly great house in Juneau. As for needing a big vehicle in Juneau – well the twit can walk the two blocks to the Capitol Bldg and save herself a whole lot of gas expense. Idiot whiner.
oops, ONE BLOCK to the Capitol.
@Martha Unalaska Yard Sign (16:28:08) :
Actually, the accident was unrelated to getting rid of the security detail, except that she didn’t have the detail with her when the accident happened, though I’m not sure if the trooper had been driving that it would have made any diffenece, since she was hit from behind while stopped. Not much even a trooper could have done about that. However, that confirms that the security detail was gone before July 2008.
@Martha Unalaska Yard Sign (16:34:47) :
oops, ONE BLOCK to the Capitol.
Well…it depends on how you count blocks!
Gryphen (16:18:02) :
Major props to you for supplying AKM with the goods. Were the two of you “conducting business” in the Target parking lot as well?
It was July 11, 2008 4pm that head of security at the time was released.
@ InJuneau
Does this mean I have to go back and read the Troopergate report? I read the whole blasted thing but can’t remember if it addresses the dates of the security detail being dismissed. I really didn’t want to read through that again since it absolutely horrifies me to read about Todd the Stalker and Palin’s Commissioners of Doom – but you know what? I’ll just use the find button. If I’m not back in an hour, will someone send a security detail for me? My house is really easy to find because all the tires on the vehicles have been eaten off.
Martha, I really don’t think it’s that necessary to torture yourself over that detail. Besides, someone commenting right above you seems to think he/she knows the answer. I’m pretty sure it was before the accident, but I may be off in my recollection. I’m certainly not recommending that anyone go back and read the Troopergate report!
IF you have read the 268 pages of Troopergate you hear from head security. Telling the truth. When security was hired after she returned from the VP gig he was not rehired. I think he knew to many details.
@ Philly Wanting TRUTH
Thank you! Does this save me from reading the Troopergate report? If so, cancel the security detail and I’ll get on with my real life that has nothing to do with the TWIT WHINER GRIFTER STALKER FUNDIE governor.

Almost time to get your pesky blogger jammies on. Get the popcorn out ready to pop. Make some hot chocolate. Get your pillow and blankie off the bed and ready in the chair. Don’t forget the marshmallows to throw at the TV after when Jindal is on. Use a few of the marshmallows in the hot chocolate before they hit the TV and floor!!
I’ve been reading Huff and there is an article that Obama is to target tax havens in the budget. That would be extremely interesting. Ohhh, what’s that sound I hear outside. I think…. I think…. yes it is — it’s a plane. I see a plane. It has the word McCain on the side. The engines are reving. I remember – I know why. He’s racing to the island to cover up all the accounts.
I recall, at one time on Obama’s you tube page during the Presidential Election, there was a video called “Tax Vacations”. I watched it and a few days later it was removed from the site. It mentioned McCain travelling to an island overnight to give a speech and talking about offshore accounts in general. (Yearightsure. McCain giving a speech in I believe the Caymans – Why?)
Therefore my interest if this issue is really contained in the speech. If it is, I do hope the camera quickly pans to McCain. He looks pale on a good day but he would be ghost white!! But then, it could pan on the faces of a number of the senators that will be in the hall.
You don’t have to tell me — I already know I’m mean!! Everybody has to have some fun somehow!!
@Philly Wanting TRUTH on GINO (16:44:55) :
Thank you. I never could bring myself to read the whole thing! Blessings on you for taking the hit for many of the rest of us!
I sure hope this book covers this shy girl’s college years….. six colleges in five years….maybe that’s why the word salad…she didn’t stay at one college long enough to figure out how to write a coherent sentence.
It’s a tradition here in the lower 48 also, too, to nickname the shy high school girls “Barracuda!”. And I recall as well, too, how the shy high school girls always entered beauty contests requiring progressing runways in swimsuits, for which they practised pageant walking down the halls between classes. Also, I know that I know that I know that all the best students always go to different colleges every year and only the shy students end majoring in journalism, let alone with jobs as sports broadcasters. Like Howard Cosell, right?
Sarah’s deconstructed her personal history. The rest of the basketball team hated her guts because she would rat out to the coach anyone who was late to practice when the Coach hadn’t notice it, so the late girl would be benched and Sarah would get more floor time. “Shyness” had nothing to do with how many people disliked her. Can’t wait to hear how she spins the rest of her lifestory.
Very astute, Penn Lawyer!
Hmmm . . .
Is this the same Lorenzo Benet who authored:
“Pimps, Whores And Welfare Brats- The Stunning Conservative Transformation of a Former Welfare Queen- Introduction by Rush Limbaugh (Hardcover)
by Star Parker . . . with Lorenzo Benet (Author)
?
http://www.amazon.com/Stunning-Conservative-Transformation-Introduction-Limbaugh/dp/B0018O6LFU/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235525222&sr=1-12
You’d almost wonder if Benet’s– “Trailblazer- An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin” is perhaps just a bit gushingly favorably biased, at least after looking up one of his previous titles.
Trailblazin’ already sounds like bullroar and it’s only the intro.
To take your mind off the mindless ( if toothpaste is not effective)….below is an interesting kerfufle brewing in Washington:
NPR reported tonight on the debate about giving the District of Columbia one seat in the House of Representatives. Lisa Murkowski was quoted as saying she will vote against it.
Debates aside….why do I consider Murkowski’s stance ironic?
Mainly because the District of Columbia has about as many people as the WHOLE state of Alaska….(D.C. is heavily democratic, I might add….hmmmm)
Hey, Lisa! It’s called “Taxation without representation”……what the founding fathers referred to as “tyranny!”
The reporter added that opponents to the D.C. House seat are afraid that D.C. will THEN want two senators as well. Fancy that!! Wanting two senators….just like the “real” Americans in Alaska.
I see a sequel on the author’s horizon– something like,
“From Beauty Queen to Per Diem Welfare Brat”
Forward by John McCain
Canadian Neighbour – This afternoon on Chris Matthews he said that MSNBC would have cameras on McCain and Cantor. Also – during the campaign , a picture surfaced of McCain and one of his top adviser/lobbyist guys boarding a yacht. The person they were meeting and was also pictured was none other than Anne Hathaways ex. He was/is notorious for money laundering and theft. He plead out and is already in the Fed. pen……..wonder if he “knew” anything ??
Oops- I forgot:

I think I am becoming obsessed by the woman. And immune. As I sit here and read, why am I not outraged? I guess it’s just what I expect – it no longer amazes and disgusts me. I’ve had a hard day. Will re-think this tomorrow. G’night, all
I have been thinking that the author (writer for “People Magazine”) REALLY tried to paint Palin in a good light. I think he WAS enamored with her. So what did she do? She denounced him, threw him under the bus. “People Magazine,” her friends, the first to get the scoop on baby Tripp and the first to get the scoop that Levi and Bristol are NOT drop outs. I predict People Mag. will not be happy – here they tried to help her, and she whines. Future articles may reflect this. She really keeps shooting herself in the foot! It really clarified some things for me regarding Gino’s non-response/demeaning response to the rural crisis. Gino is not stupid. Gino may be ignorant about a whole world of substance but when it comes to Alaska and her political dreams she has an agenda and she will find a way to force those doors open. She wants the villages gone. She wants control of the land.
AKM, good karma coming your way for taking one for the team!
It cracks me up that she’s getting nailed on the tax issues, that fiscal conservative full o’moose pucky barracuda shy girl who hates mean bloggers in their PJs….wow, karma’s coming back to punch SP in the nose! May karma come back to haunt her over and over and over again.

I don’t do polls anymore, and I’m not surprised that Sullivan is ahead since this is the Alaska Standard, which most consider a conservative paper since Dan Fagan is the publisher. I know they say they do “balanced” news in the ABOUT US, but that’s what Fox says, too so I’m still out on the Standard since I haven’t read it on a regular basis.
There is something behind the scenes with these polls, and I need to do some research on that because it’s REALLY bugging me. This one seems innocuous enough since it is an Alaskan paper, and asking about the mayoral race. But the stupid ones have been going on for quite some time like “Who would you want for daycare momma” are absolutely hideous. I believe the sites are trying for hit points to push up their numbers for advertising draws, etc.
So until I do some more research on this, I’m done with them. Let Team Sarah waste their days on this stupidity since they are already wasting their days promoting the most damaged-goods politician in recent history. Sorry to rant – but I’ve had it with these polls and I’m stepping off of the merry go round for good.
ok havn’t read the comments yet but did you know there are 5 palin ebooks on booksonboard.com?
yes, it was a fabulous state of the union from PO! so, palin produced 2 of 5 (so far) children that let down our country by dropping out of school! how does THAT feel, governor?
President Obama gave a great speech!!
Now, we must listen to Jindal….ugh
@mainiac…..I know…ugh
so far, he sucks!
jindal sounds like a 5th grader reading a book report…enunciate, man, enunciate…put a lid on the phony enthusiasm.
So far, Jindal’s speech is not impressive. After 8 years and in the mess we are in today, I am surprised at some of his comments!
Jindal just called the Democrats irresponsible. Can you believe that?
of course, people don’t love to pay taxes and there would be support for that, but tax cuts are not the answer to everything…and stop lying jindal about the proposed health care being hitler-run.

I had to turn off Jindal. He was so sad. Awful speech and worse presentation. The Repugs are using Jindal, Steele, & Palin in my opinion. They are “disposable” for this period of time during President Obama’s popularity. All three are a Big Joke.
All I can say about Jindal — he’d get the same response in Canada as Bush did. He would be met by protests. Canadians would rise to our own government to do the same as we did with Iraq — have no part of it.
Repugs, as he said, grew large, spent large. Now they look to the citizens to get out of the mess. Excuse me. Pull the rug out further from under you.
My major cruel, ugly mean streak comes out. 5 People got shot in New Orleans today, a child included. Jindal should have been on the same corner. He’s no winner. He’s not there as Country First. Terrible speech giver and he was on his own turf — he wasn’t in front of a crowd.
Slow down,Hon
@ the problem child (also an aunt) your welcome.
Yeah, I dont think she is even qualified to go on sesame street. They made more sense!
Whats with all these men being so love struck, I just dont get it.
Jindal is the hope of the gop?? Perfect!
btw, there is no proposed high speed rail from disneyland to las vegas
to date, the proposal is from san diego to sacramento…south to north
Does Pepto come in industrial gallon-size jugs???
Gonna need it.
Well Bobby, “You’re no Barack Obama.”
He’s not even a cut above SP.
PO rippped them! I liked his comment about NO HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS!!!’
We need to write and insist, that Homeschooling kids be tough, as tough as Public school!
And PO wants people to go to at a least a couple of years of college or trade school! Wow.
Don’t like Jindal at all….a Indian from India (birdy num-nums…) with a southern accent.
I like PO speech I wish he had zeroed in more about the GOP taliban…..
I was amazed, just amazed at the energy of the people there, (with the exception of GOP TALIBAN) at all the smiles and positive energy. Now hearing some sh!T from Jindal and someone else on KO show?????
Oh god these people are so stupid…..
AKM,
Watch out about reading that book…there is a eye virus going around…I am a victim and I haven’t even read this vile book, be careful!
Just a heads ups, lol!
I was amazed at how people were so happy and upbeat, it was amazing!
I was remembering about our friends abroad, what they think…..
How stupid, our country has the party of NO!
Go PO, Go !!!!!
If Bobby is the best that the GOP can do…..snort…we will have Prsident Obama for a second term.
Did anybody notice how bad McCain looked??
I just cracked up laughing, listening to one part of Gov. Jindal’s response to Pres. Obama’s speech.
He told the story of the Louisiana sheriff on the telephone, incensed at some bureaucrat who was telling him that he couldn’t send his volunteers out in boats to rescue the folks who were stranded by high water, on the roofs of their houses — because they didn’t have insurance coverage, etc. (I gather he was talking about FEMA officials, from some other references I searched). Jindal said volunteers donated their time, their equipment, their resources, whatever they could to help the folks in need as much as they could, not waiting for the bureaucrats to solve the problems within the constraints of their regulations.
Jindal may not have realized it, but he just delivered a verbal slap in the face to Gov. Palin, who is the face of Alaskan bureaucracy, with her futzing around for 6 weeks first without a rural advisor, then sending that advisor out a month after volunteers from Internet blogs, statewide church groups and school kids, and donations from all over the US began to flow to those in need in western Alaska.
Then she herself shows up with cookies and a televangelist in tow, to a town halfway between “civilization” and those in need. Is that cracked, or what?
Oh my AKM ~ you are indeed a bold ambassador…
Take that sappiness in small dosages ~ and have another shot of the pink stuff on me!

@Say No TO Palin In Politics (15:09:35) :
Here’s a reward to you AKM and all us mudpuppies! I just heard on national news Palin is paying back the travel expense for the kiddos!
Whahoo! we got an inch now lets take a mile!
=========
Yeah, wish it had been more than an inch, though. Did I miss something?–what about Todd’s expenses? I think their ‘unbiased’ ‘report’ is just the tip of the iceberg, maybe just enough (they think) to ward off the IRS. There has to be more …….
Some really rabid comments to it on ADN.

I think the struggle of rural Alaskans was much longer than that, for I can recall hearing about their plight whilst the GINO was “trailblazin” last year.
I’m surprised that Jindal had the nerve to ever bring up Katrina. We all know that W and “Brownie” really dropped the ball on Katrina. Just ask the people that lived thru it and are still having problems.
Our President has changed the face of politics. He’s made me, a small business owner, over-taxed middle class citizen matter again and he’s reminded my elected representative(s) who he/she works for.
@mt…Whats with all these men being so love struck, I just dont get it.

i think it’s the fantasy of her…she seems ‘easy’ with all that winkin’
AKM, I salute you. If you are able to stand reading and relaying this book to us, I look forward to future installments. This was one funny entry and many funny comments to read before bed.

Couldn’t help thinking during PO’s ‘non-state of the union’ tonight – how he (in no uncertain terms) assured congress that there will be no more junkets, no more planes, no more was (“even me,” he said). Quite a few times during the address Sarah Palin popped into my mind. If she heard that, I hope she knew he was talking to her.
Kind of coincidental that her ‘news’ should come out on the same day PO gives such a historic address, one so applicable to our dear governor.
Hey SP, were you listening closely to Obama’s remarks about high school dropouts.
OT OT OT
oops, no more “waste” (not was) …
getting back to the topic at hand…this was a real lol moment for sure
“”Undoubtedly, McCain erred in not letting Palin be herself on the campaign and restricting her access to the media.””
palin is too stupid to realize that mccain wanted to win and was trying to hide her incompetence (and his for choosing her) by keeping her as far away from unscripted speak as possible
OT: The reference to Government run Universal healthcare where Jindal said the decisions are up to you and your doctor and not the government. Well, the repugs haven’t looed too seriously into the matter just north of your border as Canada is Government run Universal healthcare wherein you and your doctor decide. You don’t sign up for some agency or whatever, you choose your doctor. Each province does have their own system but as I live in Ontario, I can travel to Alberta and be covered.
For those not familiar with Canadian healthcare, I pay through my income tax and I believe last year was $900 for the year. That’s for doctor, specialists, hospital visits (emerg) or stays (4 per room), surgeries and if needed, nurse visits at home after surgery, physiotherapy up to a maximum number of visits either per month or year (not sure as never used). For seniors over 65, prescriptions are paid. I homecared my Mom for 5 years and for the last year we had a nurse come in daily, also caregiver relief so I could go out and shop and they stayed with her. All covered.
You do have an option for additional coverage through your employer if they offer it, for semi-private hospital (2 people per room), dental which is usually capped at like $1,500 per yr but not everything is covered, prescriptions paying like a $25 deductible (can’t remember how that works!).
So this crap about government universal is just that — crap. Nobody goes bankrupt. Nobody looses their homes. Pre-existing conditions — so what. It’s not an issue. You aren’t lying in bed in a hospital fighting with insurance companies. Mom had Alzheimers. When we moved, switched doctors. Didn’t like the doctor, switched again. The prescriptions for seniors are usually the generic because of cost but they are the same as the namebrand. The government sets (dictates) the prices they will pay to the pharmaceutical companies. Dr appts, surgeries, etc, the costs have been negotiated and set what they will be paid.
Because your system is so high profit driven, drs and nurses trained here have gone to U.S. as they make more. Yes, we have a dr shortage. Your big medical providers/companies that hire dr and nurses attend job fairs up here to get them to move south.
I know it’s long and off topic, but thought I would post so that if someone doesn’t quite understand the difference and hears the rhetoric, I speak of someone who lives in it.
@Canadian Neighbour
thank you for clearing that up …we know it’s crap and they’re against it here because the drug and insurance companies are greedy and you’re so right about it being profit driven
Canadian Neighbour @ 19:29
I became unable to work and had to pay Cobra insurance premiums of $394 per month to continue my health coverage for about 16 months, when the money ran out. Went over 15 months with no income before I was finally approved for disability. In the meantime, lost everything. I went over 10 months with no insurance before receiving Medicare coverage, which costs about $100 per month.
You are welcome Lainey. I posted because not everyone has a connection to someone to actually talk about it. The only insurance companies involved here are if you have the additional coverage through your employer or if you want to purchase it yourself. The additional works out for families because of dental, prescriptions and I remember now, glasses once every two or three years, but as a single person — I paid for 5 years and submitted some prescriptions and minimal dental. Cost me more than it was worth.
Repugs always make it sound like they have to reinvent the wheel — They could drive to Canada in less than a day to learn all about it!! They’re fear comes from fact they are so highly invested in the insurance companies that their self worth would fall if the insurance companies were outcast.
It’s the same as our banks here. We have under say 10 major banks. They’re private corporations in that not government owned but high rules and regulations imposed by government. We hear about your banks that shut down and it sounds like small time operations. In fact, the sub-prime loans that hit you guys and Europe so bad, there was minimal purchased within our banks, actually I think only 1 or 2 had bought some, so that didn’t affect us but it was the stock market connections between countries that kicked our arses. My retirement plan like your 401K’s took the hit.
Again, off topic but a little info from outside your border as we get swamped with U.S. news, but U.S. doesn’t usually hear from outside.
Anytime anyone has questions, feel free to ask. If I don’t know, I can try and find answers.

aw, I miss Gilda! You must be around my age. Oh, and “Jane, you ignorant slut …”
It’s not much better for us, anon blogger. My husband is 81 years old and totally unable to care for himself, suffering for a stroke syndrome condition that he’s had for the past 10 years. He has the mental capacity of a ~1-3 year old (thank goodness he can still find the bathroom — but my doctor says it will only get worse).
He’s receiving Medicare coverage, which he doesn’t actually use very much because he’s OTHERWISE quite healthy for his age, albeit frail in strength and stamina. We pay $340 per month in Medicare supplemental, and another near-$40/month in Medicare Rx for his prescriptions. Thanks goodness some of his most expensive meds can be obtained in generic form now, at about 1/8 the cost of what they were several years ago.
I just can’t wait (sarcasm intended) until next year when I reach Medicare age myself. Whoopee. I really hope Pres. Obama comes up with something that’ll help our medical insurance expenses by then.
Sorry, folks, for getting so far OT.
Canadian Neighbour, thank you for your perspective. We do hear a lot of crap about universal healthcare and how our poor Canadian friends have to wait for 6 months to see a Dr., etc. We also hear that the most seriously ill patients (think cancer) are often not given the newest treatments since they are so expensive, so they are basically written off when the usual treatments don’t work and allowed to become terminal and die. Is there any truth to that? It wouldn’t be impossible to believe…in the US, insurance companies will often fight tooth and nail to keep from paying for expensive or experimental treatments, basically figuring the patient will die before they need to pay.
@Canadian Neighbor
Are certain procedures limited? I thought that I remembered reading that people over 50 couldn’t get dialysis–do you know if that is true? I think that part of the problem (down here) is that we don’t have good information about your (Canadian) system. I have never been able to understand why if someone else has something that works, we can’t just adopt that system. I know this is a little off topic, but I have been wondering about Canadian health care for a while. Thanks.
anon blogger (19:44:38) & KaJo (19:54:10) ,
My heart goes out to you and to so many others I hear about. Having lived through it with Mom, no matter where seniors live, they’ve paid their dues to be taken care of. Stay strong as I’m not one who invests trust in many, but Obama feels right!! Hell, I’d offer to go work in Washington for free to light fires and show them how it works. The Repugs wouldn’t like me thought — I don’t bark — I bite.
Crystal wolf- what really needs done is all evolution/education supporters in these backwoods school districts (like mine) -those schools that “avoid” teaching sound things- need to PULL their kids from school & HOMESCHOOL so they’ll get a proper education. Boycott creation lunnies! Districts lose funds for every homeschooler. Reverse the cause.
I assure you, when my kids applied for college the admin LOVED what they saw. It was solid.
But I support the NO dropout thing. Our kids need to buck up and learn. Teachers need to teach things like real science and American history (& seperation of church and state).
As far as Jingleberry is concerned – this was his big night to be the new GOP lead man and he couldn’t pull it off. The GOP is like a smoldering fire on a cold winter night. Good for not a damned thing but causing depression for what might have been… brrrr…shiver..shake….brrr..
Obama kicked A.
Palin made the news, yet again, for her unethical behavior and nothing good at all. She is burnt toast. Good riddens to her.

One of my best friends is half US – Hald English. No one in her “English” family has ever had trouble with medical care from GB. Not one horror story.
But here in the USA I can tell you of many I have heard… and experienced.
Whisky Otter, Sometimes we have to wait for specialist appointments instead of what I call the instant gratification. My father had liver cancer at 62 and had 3 rounds of chemo. There are times where people have been sent to U.S. for treatment which the doctor has battled the system for and it would be covered. In some cases you push for appointments as the specialists can be swamped as I said, many have gone State side. Canadians to many are known as doormats – easy going, don’t get upset type attitude. I am so not that type of person!!
who me? I’ve never heard that about dialysis. I’ve heard some things said about a few things (can’t remember exactly what treatements) about elderly but never heard anyone actually experiencing a problem. Sometimes we just have to stand firm as the doctors I find don’t necessarily have the same ethics and values that the profession once did. I research and educate myself on issues so they have no chance to bowl me over.
I’ll do some research this week looking for a site with some info and post it for you.
AKM — I hope you don’t mind that I’ve taken the blog off topic. I thought I would post some info so that some people who don’t have access to learn of something that keeps coming up more often now with healthcare. Thanks. Diane
So where in the hell is Sarah anyway? Fall into a snowbank and feeze to death? No, that’d be too easy….

Paula, I read last week the homeschool thing was pushed through b/c of Dobson Focus on Family. right wingers etc. Some states are so lax they don’t even do testing to make sure kids are actually being “homeschooled” So they don’t have to take yearly tests. Some of these homeschooled parents think kids don’t need to start until 12! Cali is a state that believes home school parents have to have some credentials. I think the vids of the people who came to GINO’s rallies were proof positive that most home school doesn’t work.
I know some people enroll their kids in religious schools or private which usually have a “agenda”. Public schools aren’t great sometimes, but at least the kids learn to read. Do you check out comments on TS or conservatives 4 Palin??? Sometimes I think its a “joke” lol!
I think if people homeschool they should be made to provide or follow a certain curriculum. In many states they don’t even have to prove they are doing anything at all!
It takes allot of dedication to homeschool children or enroll in a online school/course. Its very difficult. I don’t think kids without a solid sense of studying could do it. Most parents…at least here in the BayArea enroll their kids in PRE-School! They want them to get a jump start in education. I think if a family is strong… public school is good. If the parents are vigilant and pay attention to make sure their kids ARE BEING TAUGHT not babysat, it makes a difference…JMO.
I also think community colleges are a GODSNED! I didn’t even know in high school,college….. outside of having “rich parents” existed. When I did start attending community college (after a vocational course) I jumped in feet first with Microbiology! I loved it!!!!
I really liked what PO said tonight, that everyone should go attend extra years after high school, but that means you have to graduate first!!!! ( GINO hear that?)
Canadian Neighbour – Hey did you hear? Bush’s first public speaking engagement will be in Canada! I think it’s invited only or something like that. I saw video of the reaction to Obama’s visit to Canada and it was overwhelming. And he gave a shout out to the people from Canada going over the border and campaigning for him. I heart Canada. I wonder if you know how many conversations there were before out election, from the people who feared McCain/Palin would win, trying to figure where in Canada they would move to. Myself, I thought Whitehorse. It seemed like if I had to go somewhere, Whitehorse would be it. People were seriously thinking where in Canada they would go. We in Alaska (I guess I can only speak for myself) but I’m definately not the only one, appreciate Canada. If everything goes to hell, we can go to Canada. Maybe it goes back to Vietnam for a person of my age. Anyway, thankyou Canada. I know you have your problems too.
@BS..how funny that you should reveal my secret desire to move to Canada if palin won the vice-presidency…i did not know that the thought ran rampant
Lainey,
You mentioned that Track and Bristol were dropouts and that is very sad. I hope that Willow and Piper can go forth and graduate high school and use their parent’s resources to attend college and excel, and perhaps rise above the mindset of their parents. I really hope they do, because where I grew up that was the only way out; go to school and get a good job and get the hell out of small town America. America was built on each generation achieving more than the last and hopefully the Palin clan can realize that dream in the next two girls.
if palin can stop neglecting her children for the sake of her own personal gains, then maybe the rest of her kids will have a chance
Lainey – Yup there were a lot of us thinking of moving to Canada. Now – when it comes down to actually moving – who knows? It depends on whether you are renting or you own your house, Personally, my house is paid off, I can’t see leaving. But if I HAD TOO, I would move to Canada.
BS & Lainey,
LOL!! I heard a lot of stories like that. Canadian population was going to explode!!
And yes, I heard he is doing a speech. In Calgary, Alberta on March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. Maybe he’ll drink some green beer or a little lephrechan will snuff him!! They won’t disclose whether he is being paid for the speech. Seems he continues in his quest for secrecy. I call it stupidity as I don’t tolerate that well.
Canadian Neighbour – Where do you live? What do you think about living in Whitehorse?
AKM….come on now..I don’t want to see this book “win” you over (eyelashes batting subliminally from pages of Trailblazer).
BS, if you like living in Alaska, Whitehorse would probably suit you just fine. Small town feel, and I don’t mean Wasilla-like.
Canadian Neighbor – thanks for the good info on Health Care in your country! Much appreciated!
I tried reading the first bolded paragraph and was immediately seized by these thoughts: “No! No! I can’t! No! Scroll down! Scroll down!”
Sorry. I tried. I’m just not that brave. I think my blood pressure just sky rocketed.
And yes, I agree, McCain did make a mistake to keep her from the media. A mistake for the rest of us, that is! If she had been “unleashed”, I think there would no doubt whatsoever that she would NOT be even thinking about the presidency in 2012. Too bad. Now we’re stuck with her. Thanks McCain…..grrrr.
It’s great that her supporters believe McCain holding her back only hurt the campaign. Even better that she truly believes this herself. She’s blinded by her own stupidity, greed and narrow vision, and there’s plenty of sycophants to goad her forward…
An unleashed Palin in 2012 would make her embarrassing defeat all the sweeter. The harder she tries to polish her image over the next four years, the more dirt and corruption gets uncovered.
I vurped a little when I read this book’s introduction.
If the ghosts of trees could weep, the afterworld of plants would echo with their lamentation once they learn their bodies were made into the paper on which this drivel was printed.
On healthcare: people should remember that here in the USA, many people wait for specialists and the HMO’s and insurance companies ration care. It makes me crazy when the right complains that universal healthcare puts a bureaucracy in charge of your care decisions. And just how is that different than the current system of denying every claim????
Whisky Otter
Medicare in Canada began about 50 years ago- shortly after I had my first child, so I remember. The leftish Saskatchewan politician who pushed for it won a highly publicised TV poll for “Greatest Canadian” a couple of years ago- beat out Trudeau and Louis Riel.
For about the last 15 years, Medicare has been a political conflict- Right wing governments and doctors under 75 who believe that they would make more money as free agents (looking longingly at the US) argue that Canada cannot sustain paying for it as the population ages.
How it works: Doctors are free agents in that they are paid fee for service, not as state emplyees as some are in Britain- but the state sets their fee schedule. It isn’t very high- about $30 for an office visit? Rules are set by the provinces and provincial Medical Assiciations which fight over fee schedules. Some provinces encourage doctor-owned clinics which can bill medicare, some (used to?) insist that doctors who want to do this must opt out of medicare completely. I will note that I believe insurance to practive which is the doc’s own responsibility has been MUCH less expensive here than in the US.
Most provinces limit private clinics to treating “fringe” things- MRIs without waits, laser eye surgery. Waiting periods can be bad to extreme for non-emergency care (maybe 8 months for knee replacement) but are fast (1 week) for things like cancer treatment. Drug plans are private but “catastrophic” plans cover things like cancer drugs, except for the newest stuff, which is covered in some provinces (politically popular).
Currently I live in BC, formerly Alberta- one of the most favorable to privatization. The Medical Association there finally decided that seeing a doctor took up just the same time and cost if it was same day or a week later, so now if I phone before 9 AM, I can come in the same day. Single medicare premiums are about $700 a year, free in BC over 65 regardless of your income level.
Everywhere in Canada, it is very hard to staff rural communities- short staff means extreme overwork which causes doctors to leave, which means short staff…
We have redneck political nuts, including an Alberta Premier who in 1998 thought health care cost was getting out of hand and letting arrogant doctors run it was blocking reform, so he dissolved all the local health units in favor of several regional ones and emptied out the Calgary General hospital and blew it up. (I thought I’d better explain it was empty- that’s how much you could trust this guy.)
Here’s the YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y4zCNv00OQ
At the time Calgary planned to build two new hospitals in a few years time, because it was short of beds– 20 years later, it has build one and is still short of beds…
Thanks, guys. I think that when a person retires and applies for social security, Medicare is not available to that person for 24 months. Myself, I had to wait 29 months because of some rule…I don’t remember. I might not be remembering it correctly, but thought I would mention it. In the 80s, Medicare was retro back to the date of the onset of a disability and Medicare was no cost to anyone covered.
I’m sorry about my previous post. I had not yet seen the Buckley article and it wasn’t dated so I thought it was a recent article because the Huff Post linked it to one of their headlines today, so I just assumed it was a current article.

Even if she was brave enough to face the possibility of him gunning her down from the crowd; What about the danger to her children, her pregnant daughter, her 7 year old, an infant and an unborn child, the man she wanted to be the next President, her associates, Joe the Plumber, her new wardrobe?
Were they all made away of the imminent dangers they were facing because she had made the decision to dismiss not only her own by their protection, knowing that there was a mad man trying to kill her?
There really isn’t a statement that she makes that is the actual whole truth.
Kind of remind me of Duhbya.
I’m so pleased, my blankie is pink again!
Canadian Neighbour & Kate, thanks so much for your input on Canadian healthcare. It’s so good to hear from real people and not politicians!
@anon blogger:
Medicare Part A is available at age 65, whether you retire or not. Covers In-patient
care. If you are permanently disabled by Social Security standards before age 65,
then you have to wait for 2 years or reach age 65 before getting Med. Part A.
The full age for Social Security income maintainance used to be 65, but now for people
born after 1940 or some such year, is gradually going up. Ie, 1942 birth year has to
wait till 65 years and 7 months.
Another issue, maybe for the Forum, is the amount of the Medicare budget that is spent on futile end-of-life care that is partially due to patient’s denials of death,
and partially that it is ‘covered’ by Medicare, and partially that medical providers
do not want to admit defeat. The chances of leaving the hospital after a cardiac
arrest for an elderly person is very low….you may get your heart stopped, but then
you get to live another 30 days in hospital till you die. These are generalizationsthat unfortunately are based on memory of statistics. This is some
of the “pork” that keeps US medicine so costly, and drug and insurance companies so rich.
