Remember when Sarah Palin simultaneously proclaimed herself to be an advocate for children with autism, and mocked fruitfly research at the same time?  A quick Google search will reveal that fruit fly research has been, and continues to be important in trying to understand….autism.  So why did Palin attack that science?

a) She didn’t bother to do any research on it.

b) It sounds funny.

c) Both a and b.

If you picked “c”, you are correct.

Now let’s play again with the NEXT next golden child of the Republican Party – Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal.

In his grand debut last night, in front of the nation, as the governor of a state that has suffered mightily from lack of preparedness in the face of natural disaster, and while several hundred thousand Americans (of which I am one) are currently living within sight of a volcano that is “code orange” and has at its base, a Chevron tank farm sitting at its base, right next to Cook Inlet, what does he do?

He mocks government spending on volcano monitoring.  Excuse me…he mocks government spending on ”something called ‘volcano monitoring’”.  Once again, a quick Google search will reveal what this strange and mysterious ritual that some call “volcano monitoring” is all about.  I’m sure the folks at the Alaska Volcano Observatory will be happy to enlighten Governor Jindal.  So, why did Jindal attack this science?

a) He didn’t bother to do any research on it.

b) It sounds funny.

c) Both a and b.

Once again, if you answered “c”, you are correct.

Let’s hear what Alaska’s Senators have to say about Jindal’s comments.    Hint:  They’re gonnan blow!!

First, a letter from Senator Mark Begich (D):

Dear Governor Jindal:

I write to take issue with your comments on national television last night following President Obama’s speech regarding federal spending on volcano monitoring.

Specifically, you listed “volcano monitoring” in a series of projects you consider ”wasteful spending.” Volcano monitoring is a matter of life and death in Alaska. The science of volcano monitoring and the money needed to fund it is incredibly important in our state and could affect the economic well-being of other states and countries because of Alaska’s key role in international commerce.

In December 1989, Alaska’s Mount Redoubt had a serious eruption that caused a Boeing 747 to lose power in all four engines with hundreds of passengers on board. Fortunately, the aircraft was able to restart and land safely, but damage to the airliner exceeded $80 million. Obviously, had the aircraft not been able to restart its engines, the result would have been catastrophic.

Alaska’s largest international airport in Anchorage is one of the world’s busiest cargo airports, with more than 600 wide-body cargo jets delivering millions of dollars of goods between Asia, North America and Europe each week. Any interruption of that traffic by a volcanic eruption could be felt in Tokyo, New York or even Baton Rouge.

Currently, the Alaska Volcano Observatory monitors 31 active Alaskan volcanoes and works closely with other federal , state and municipal agencies to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions. Eruptions often spew curtains of ash miles into the air that impact communities hundreds of miles downwind, causing severe health consequences for our citizens. When there is a significant eruption, those with respiratory challenges must stay indoors.

For Alaska and our country, monitoring volcanoes is important business. The more we know about what might happen, the better our citizens and industries can plan for the potential hazard. Feel free to contact my office so we can provide you with further information regarding this important subject.

Sincerely,
Mark Begich
U.S. Senator

Even fellow Republican Lisa Murkowski jumped on Jindal’s comments:

“It is absolutely appropriate for our federal government to spend money on volcano monitoring. A current example is Mount Redoubt. This active volcano, which is on the flight path into Anchorage International Airport, the third busiest cargo airport in the world, and Elmendorf Air Force Base, has been smoldering since the end of January. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has been on 24 hour watch since then.

A volcanic eruption at Mount Redoubt has the potential to bring down a jumbo aircraft flying over Southcentral Alaska. Alaskans vividly remember that volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Redoubt nearly brought down a KLM Boeing 747 as it was completing its flight from Amsterdam to Anchorage in December 1989. The volcanic ash caused the failure of all four engines on the jumbo jet.

And it’s not just Alaska that’s fuming (pardon the pun).  The folks who live in the shadow of Mt. St. Helen’s are not amused.

“Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?” Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Washington, said on Wednesday. “We have one that’s very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently.”

Pollard, a former Army officer who has served as Vancouver’s mayor for 14 years, said USGS equipment used to keep tabs on volcanoes is frequently damaged or destroyed. He said he wasn’t sure how many jobs the money could produce, but, “For us and the people who live closer to it than Vancouver, it’s important.”

“We lost lives the last time, and we could lose them again,” he said.

But Jindal’s office stands firm with their assessment of volcano monitoring calling it “just one example of wasteful spending” in the stimulus bill.  His original comments stated that  ”Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington.”   Like the people who govern in states that actually HAVE volcanoes indicated – not funny.  Perhaps Jindal would like to consider cutting all that wasteful spending on hurricane monitoring instead?

Of course not.  That’s in his back yard.  He’d much rather cut volcano monitoring.  All I can say is, “Way to tick off the entire pacific Northwest, and Hawaii, Republicans!”  May I suggest for your next trick, you mock corn, tornadoes, sweet tea, fishing, snow, dry heat, golf, the military and orphans?  I think that covers everybody.

Think of New Orleans and the cities, docks, businesses, and farms along the lower Mississippi River and remember the St. Madras fault is due to slip again any ol’ day now. Or maybe a thousand years hence, so lets just ignore it.

The last time the St. Madras slipped there were very few Europeans living in the area of the fault, but there was considerable damage and loss of life – relative to the size of the settlements that were hit.

Now think of Louisiana and New Orleans again, and its levees and its below sea level existance, and the pumps that must constantly pump to keep the city dry, and think what can happen if severe upheavals up river should cause a temporary back up and then release of the Mighty Missisip.

Let him suck his finger and stick it in the air to see which was the wind blows, but that wouldn’t be hygenic knowing where that finger has been!! And by the way Jindal, you can return your paychecks and benefits to: American Taxpayers, c/o….. since they are on their own so there is no Governor job anymore, or senator job. Let me give you directions to the food bank. No sense giving directions to unemployment line — it doesn’t exist as you referred, it’s not gov’s responsibility.

As for volcano monitoring, there may be the chance of the Canadian Gov involvement in that Alaska is attached to Canada, not the lower 48. Here is why we monitor Volcanoes:

Volcanic eruptions are one of Earth’s most dramatic and violent agents of change. Not only can powerful explosive eruptions drastically alter land and water for tens of kilometers around a volcano, but tiny liquid droplets of sulfuric acid erupted into the stratosphere can change our planet’s climate temporarily. Eruptions often force people living near volcanoes to abandon their land and homes, sometimes forever. Those living farther away are likely to avoid complete destruction, but their cities and towns, crops, industrial plants, transportation systems, and electrical grids can still be damaged by tephra, ash, lahars, and flooding.

Fortunately, volcanoes exhibit precursory unrest that if detected and analyzed in time allows eruptions to be anticipated and communities at risk to be forewarned with reliable information in sufficient time to implement response plans and mitigation measures.

    From:

    http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/

You can monitor volcanoes from this site.

I live in WA and remember Mt. St. Helens erupting it caused devastation for the whole state. The ash removal alone was a monumental effort to get the state moving again.

Yellowstone Caldera is one of the largest and most active calderas in the world. The spectacular geysers, boiling hot springs, and mud pots that have made Yellowstone famous–and even the strikingly beautiful Grand Canyon of Yellowstone through which the Yellowstone River plunges–owe their existence to the tremendous volcanic forces that have affected the region during the past 2 million years. Cataclysmic eruptions 2.0, 1.3, and 0.6 million years ago ejected huge volumes of rhyolite magma; each eruption formed a caldera and extensive layers of thick pyroclastic-flow deposits. The youngest caldera is an elliptical depression, nearly 80 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide, that occupies much of Yellowstone National Park. The caldera is buried by several extensive rhyolite lava flows erupted between 75,000 and 150,000 years ago.

National Park and the area immediately west of the Park are historically among the most seismically active areas in the Rocky Mountains. Small-magnitude earthquakes are common beneath the entire caldera, but most are located along the Hebgen Lake fault zone that extends into the northwest part of the caldera. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred along this zone in 1959.
I bet he has not taken his kids to Yellowstone National Park. Oh that’s right, he’s in Disney World! Literally.

If the Republicans want to argue that volcanoes are so rare, and have killed so few that its just – gods will or something-, then we should argue that ALL tectonic studies help understand the dangers of volcanoes as well as earthquakes, and tsunamis, and will help predict impending danger, and save lives and reduce loss of property.

The comparison to atmospheric studies is very appropriate.
It was lack of an early warning system that killed 1-2 hundred thousand when an earthquake created a tsunami.

What does he care about volcanoes they are far far away in his mind since they do not have them there. If it was a Hurricane fund then he would be for it not agaisnt it. Moron needs to learn there is more to the country then his little world.

    Good Morning Everyone,

    Paula,

No I didn’t get brain washed by Palin. ROFLMFAO

It’s just been crazy here in Nunam. We have been having a blizzard for 2 days now, finally cleared up this morning. Yesterday, CC had 4 immunizations and was feverish, whiny, grouchy, and just made it impossible for me to be online.

I am working on an update for AKM/MF’s. We haven’t had any planes due to the blizzard in fact our elementary school co-ed basketball team has been stuck in Scammon Bay since Saturday.

Don’t worry, I am still here, but due to the blizzard our phones have been going on and off and thus I was having internet issues since I have dial up.

I’ll get an update to AKM today. :-D

I grew up in CT and now live in MA. I’ve never even been anywhere with a volcano. My experience with volcanoes is limited to seeing my sister once make a paper mache mountain and adding red food coloring to vinegar and baking soda to simulate lava.

And I still yelled at the TV when Jindal mocked volcano monitoring. What a jerk. How ignorant can you be? Or is he just heartless? That whole speech was a joke!

Those of you wondering whether Palin will side with her senators or Jindal are not likly to get an answer. Palin only seems to make a comment when someone in the liberal elite media “attacks” her by pointing out her unethical behavior. And considering she couldn’t name any Supreme Court case besides RvW, when part of her state was devestated by Exxon, she’s not likely to come down on the side of the reality that she has 31 volcanoes in her state. Are any of them near Wasilla? She might know about them if there are.

The 1980 erruption of Mount St Helen killed 57 people and caused widespread damage. It was mega-news, back then, but I guess since it happened almost 30 years ago, the Republican party believes nobody actually remembers it. Remember when Palin referenced small pockets in the US of people who are pro-American? I guess it only fitting that the GOP now apparently dismisses the five states with active volcano (and the four more with potentially active volcanos) as pockets of non-America, since evidently, Volcanos are mysterous, exotic, foreign sounding things that simply don’t exist in the real America.

AKM, there are actually MILLIONS of people living within the fallout zones of recently active volcanoes – Mt. Rainier overshadows Seattle, Portland has Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens – whose blast killed 57 people in 1980 and could have been even much more devastating without monitoring.

Seismic monitoring is not limited to volcanic events – the link between volcanic activity and earthquake activity gives us clues about where/when we can expect major earthquakes to occur in the affected region’s tectonic fault system.

Maybe Bobby Jindal wants to go back to using buoy measurements as his primary hurricane warning system?

The volcano-monitoring sneer just make me stare. (And nearly choke on a mouthful of coffee.) I lived in So Cal for 26 years and was there for the Northridge earthquake. Seismic monitoring is used for volcanoes and earthquake preparedness – no one in a high-techtonic area mocks seismic monitoring, not if they have the brains god gave a guinea pig. And yeah, if the New Madrid fault lets go again, a whole lot of this country, including Louisiana, will be in a world of hurt.

Jindall may have gone to Harvard and be a Rhodes Scholar, but – I went to school with a lot of people who were able to pull a perfect 4.0 (straight A’s) average but still act dumber than dirt. Not to mention not having the common sense of your standard 5 year old. He may be one of those. And unfortunately, fundamental religionists seem to deliberately give up the ability to reason and think coherently. Maybe they consider it a gift to god…

SmallSteps – I know what you mean! Every time I think “okay, they’ve hit the limit for wackaloon nonsense,” hey, they find greater limits. My computer desk is by a window and I keep calm(er) by watching the birds at the bird feeders outside. Today we have goldfinches, house sparrows, downy woodpeckers, tufted titmice, cardinals, mourning doves and bluejays. And the occasional red squirrel that runs up and down the gutters and eaves, chattering like a crazy critter. (I live in a rural area in central Michigan.)

Even though it has been all over the Internet and on MSNBC, when I first heard of it i did a quick google

As much as I’d like this to be just another of her many “brain freeze moments” actually I think she was “right”. Grrr

But just mentioning as there are so many things to get on her about and it is good to keep it fact based

So there IS a France Fruit Fly “pork” .. it is for their olive groves

There is another “Fruit Fly” project that is for autism .. in the U.S.

I believe she mentioned the word “France” so she was most likely accurate and it is in reference to the Olive Grove research.. not the Autism one

NOW.. when I looked up “Governmental Pork” .. the very first google page that came up listed the France fruit fly research at the top.

All I could think of.. this strange woman.. probably trying to fit in a talking point did a quick google search and the first Earmark she came across she grabbed.. any 2nd grader could do that.

What was bizarre was her lack of Special Needs intellect that she claims she is a strong supporter of.. if that were the case.. she would of remembered the Fruit Fly research for Autism.. and at the Special Needs speech it probably wouldnt be very “tactful” to use the France one as an example.. people might confuse it. Perhaps she could of simply chosen another off the list instead. Now THAT is moronic to me.

While visiting over at the immoral minority great blog, everything was fine until I clicked on the sidebar to go to The Alaska Standard; it worked, I read, and then closed out. Only…that page kept popping up, close after close after close, just kept popping up. I was able to get into my email, but it crashed when I tried to look at my inbox. I deleted cookies and temp files, but it kept popping up. Then I began having trouble with Google as well. I had two sites opened, the other latter one was okay for quite a while, til it crashed because of an IE error. I started getting an error saying that this file needed a file at that location, and it was shutting down. (Guess that was my fault deleting all those temp files, my bad.) Then there were errors that IE had errors. I went through fox and tried to update IE. I went to email and found in my in box a new message from CBS to update my information. I don’t think so…I had just read that viruses were going around like that. You are asked information and the message looks legit. I deleted the message and finished running a spyware; almost finished running McAfee, so far, nothing. And Google seems to be okay…but using the fox now. Guess you know by now I’m not very computer literate. What should I do first if it happens again? The popups?

“Mr. Jindal was writing about a profound and transformational religious experience, but there is probably a good reason his campaign does not want people to read this essay. The essay raises more questions than answers, and many of these questions are uncomfortable.

The type of demonic possession described by Mr. Jindal is a rare phenomenon, and according to Canon law, the Rite of Exorcism can only be performed by an ordained priest. The intervention described by Mr. Jindal is strictly forbidden by the Catholic Church. (The Rite of Exorcism was practically abolished in 1999, and today, it can only be used in extreme circumstances and can only be performed in Latin). And there are other, important hermeneutical questions concerning Mr. Jindal’s own understanding of the Catholic faith—his misinformed notion of the hierarchy of saints, his expressed belief in the instant reward of personal prayer, his simultaneous acceptance and dismissal of people who pray to Mary as “idolaters,” his existential confusion between evangelical Christianity and Catholicism, and his failure to alert a priest to intervene in the Rite of Exorcism. “

It was a 27 person delegation that included Delegates to Congress from other US Territories, staff members and five Members of Congres, headed by the committee chair, Don Young (R-AK).

Hundreds of foreign contract workers were waiting to meet with them. They had hoped that these Representatives of the US Congress were coming to learn about the ongoing abuse. Instead, the Young delegation ignored and dismissed them.

Later that weekend, a group of at least three congress members took their fact-finding mission to a Filipina strip club called Orchids. In all seriosness, this is an excellent read:

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/26/carville.republicans/index.html

    In part:
The Republican Party has just suffered a bad but not unprecedented defeat. The U.S. economy is in shambles. And the patch of ground some leading figures in the GOP have chosen to occupy to rally back is to oppose expanded unemployment benefits in the middle of a recession.

They could have chosen a stronger national defense and terrorism policy, personal responsibility or even market-based health care reform. Arguing that President Obama’s publicly-supported economic stimulus bill was full of wasteful spending (Rush Limbaugh termed it “Porkulus”) was not enough.

No, their cause in this time of crisis is to deny expanded unemployment benefits to tens of thousands of jobless workers by saying they would not accept added federal funding for them.

So my home state governor, creationism-toting Bobby Jindal, the newly-tapped spokesperson of the Rush Limbaugh-led Republican Party, and a handful of Southern governors, took their stand on expanded unemployment benefits which make up about 2 percent of the economic recovery package.

This, despite the fact that economists from all political ideologies concluded that extending the length of time that workers can collect unemployment insurance benefits would be one of the most effective stimulus measures.

hey, wayney, sorry, la palin was NOT right on the fruit flies research.

it was widely acknowledged at the time that, yes, in fact the fruit fly/olive research is being done in france but it is funded in part by the US because it is important research to benefit olive growers in the US as well.

most of the US olive growers are in california but also georgia, arizona, new mexico and texas

    http://www.oliveoilsource.com/scripts/producers.asp?p_let=all

when palin made the snarky remark she was ridiculing fruit fly research period. that this research is being conducted in france was, in her mind, bonus red meat for her followers against “limp-wristed, latte-swilling elitists.”

if you pay attention, you all will have noticed that this is a technique republicans/conservatives/fundagelicals use in attacking everything: they find something with just enough truth to it that the waters can be permanently muddied.

you’re right, wayney, the fruit fly research in france is about olives, not autism, but palin didn’t criticize foreign olive research, she critized US-funded fruit fly research that’s being done not just in a foreign country but america-hating, socialist-loving france.

another example of this gambit is the recent pelosi/mouse business. the charge by republicans is that there are millions of dollars in the stim bill directed to “saving the marsh mouse.” that is not in fact true, but there is money in the stim bill directed to wetlands preservation and there are marsh mice living in those wetlands. technically there is a chance that stim money will be spent on studying/preserving wetlands in which these mice live.

again, republicans argue says there is money directed toward mice in the stim bill. a state agency to which money is directed may spend some of that money in a way that will benefit said mice.

as a result, every time someone explains it the idiots making the false claim say “well, there you just said the mice will get funding!” and the whole thing starts all over again.

it’s like the high-speed rail (HSR) being built from disney land to las vegas. it only exists in their imagination. their goal is to try to make democrats look foolish so they turn something as important to this country as HSR into a joke.

you should read up on HSR. there’s a lot of it in europe and the far east. travel is a lot easier, a lot cheaper and is much less detrimental to the environment than motor vehicles and planes. HSR benefits much more than just the end points — there is significant economic benefit to areas all along the length of HSR lines.

but we’ll just snicker about fruit flies and trains from disney to las vegas, because we’re doing just fine here in the united states. who cares about smog and dead lakes and kids with asthma and people with cancer and lead poisoning. what do we need olive growers for? olives are for sissies who drink martinis. we’re americans, we hate trains, because we might have to sit next to someone we don’t know and — oh, my god — they might be colored or foreign or smell funny.

no, sarah palin was not right.

but in the end, they keep you doubting reality every step of the way, and that’s the way they win the debate, or used to. it is indeed getting harder because ordinary people like me can lay their hands on the truth with a couple clicks of the mouse.

Does anybody else wonder why of all the American Pork to choose from Palin picked French Pork to use as an example? That never made much sense. You are probably right she just googled it, about 5 minutes before the speech, and being lazy (boy what a journalist she would have been) didn’t look any further.

She did however set herself up for the autism/genetic research criticism. (The French research is probably for crop protection research, just like we do in this country, and so is not necessarily Pork.)

But since the topic has come up. What, if anything are the Palin’s doing to help their developmentally challenged infant. Early stimulation of brain and muscles are the best approach.
I assume they are doing nothing or she would be doing speeches about all the stuff she has learned about helping developmentally challenged children to help her PR image.

I really do feel for her children.

That’s a stumper! I’m beginning to think that maybe JTP went to the same journalism school as Palin:

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2009/01/joe-the-plumber.html

Asked about Israel’s ban on foreign journalists entering the Gaza Strip, Wurzelbacher made it clear he has no desire to see the front lines himself or to investigate both sides of the story.

He said: “To be honest I don’t think journalists should be anywhere around war. You guys report where our troops are at, you report what’s happening day to day, you make a big deal out of it. I think it’s asinine.

“I like back in World War I and World War II, where you’d go to the theater and you’d see our troops on screen and everyone would be real excited and happy for them,” he said. “I think media should be abolished from reporting.”

Perhaps THIS is what Sarah and Lisa were meeting about:

    Victims of Bush/Cheney?

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and other allies of Big Oil are opposing legislative provisions that could help save America’s polar bears and other threatened and endangered animals from extinction.

Urge your Senators to reverse the Bush Administration’s awful endangered species rules.

The Senate could vote on legislative provisions to reverse the Bush rules in the next few days, so please help us send 35,000 messages by Monday!

Fast Fact: Polar bears could disappear from America in the next 50 years.

The Bush/Cheney Administration has been gone for more than a month, but their eleventh-hour regulatory shenanigans are still threatening our polar bears and other threatened and endangered wildlife.

Before leaving office, the Bush/Cheney Administration rammed through a regulatory change to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that threatens efforts to save polar bears, wolves, manatees and nearly 1,400 other species from extinction.

Speak out for America’s vanishing polar bears and other threatened and endangered animals. Urge your Senators to reverse the Bush Administration’s awful endangered species rules.

The Bush/Cheney regulatory changes eliminated scientific review by the Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service of projects that could harm imperiled wildlife. These changes also block important conservation measures under the Endangered Species Act to help the polar bear.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed its omnibus spending bill, including provisions that would enable Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to reverse the Bush Administration’s awful endangered species proposals. Unfortunately, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski — backed by her Governor, Sarah Palin — and others in the Senate are now working furiously to strip these provisions from the Senate’s version of the omnibus bill.

Please take action now. Urge your Senators to stand up to Murkowski and help reverse the Bush/Cheney assault on protections for polar bears and other imperiled animals.

The Senate is expected to vote on the omnibus spending bill in the next few days, and we need your help to show broad support for real action to protect polar bears and other imperiled animals. Please take action today and help us send at least 35,000 messages to the Senate by Monday.

If Murkowski and Palin are successful, polar bears and hundreds of other imperiled animals could be denied important help under the Endangered Species Act — protections that are increasingly important as animals like polar bears struggle to survive the effects of global warming.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that as many as two-thirds of the world’s polar bears could be lost in the next 50 years — including America’s dwindling polar bear population.

Polar bears need our help today. Please send a message to your Senators right now and urge them to ensure that polar bears get the help they need to avoid extinction.

A Senate vote on this bill could come soon, so please take action right now to help protect our polar bears and other wildlife.

    With Gratitude,

    Rodger Schlickeisen
    President
    Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Defenders of Wildlife is fighting hard in Congress, in the courts and on the ground to save our polar bears. Please consider adopting a polar bear mom and cub to help support these and other vital efforts to protect threatened and endangered species.

For the person who thought Sarah was right to criticize the ‘French” fruit fly study because it was for their olives:
Yes, olives are a very important crop here in the US as well. We are much newer at this and the particular research that was being done was on a variety of fruit fly and olive that have been in France for hundreds of years. We are now having the same problem. It makes sense to go to the source where they already have a lot of knowledge about a problem and do a collaborative effort (which this was) to learn how to control these particular flies so the crops in both countries do not get destroyed.

I noticed that Sarah didn’t complain about the ‘mating habits of crabs in Bristol Bay’.

About Jindal and curing cancer. Well, the gubmint doesn’t need to spend any money on that because he successfully cured his girlfriend’s cancer during the exorcism he performed on her. So as long as he is sure he won’t get hurt during the process, he’ll be happy to do the job for you. (Only if he’s sure he won’t get hurt)
