Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Heyyyy….You Got Church in My State!

Remember those old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Commercials, where the two people crashed into each other, one holding an opened chocolate bar and one holding an open jar of peanut butter?  The dialog went:

Peanut Butter Guy: “Hey. You got chocolate in my peanut butter!”
Chocolate Guy: “Well, you got peanut butter on my chocolate!”
Announcer: “Two great tastes that taste great together!”

So here’s the Sarah Palin Rural Alaska Food Relief version.

Me: “Hey, you got church in my state!”
Me: “Well, you got state on my church!”
Announcer: “Yuck.”

Recently, as we all know, Governor Sarah Palin, Lt. Governor Sean Parnell (both from the State) and the Revs. Franklin Graham and Jerry Prevo (both from the church) flew off to rural Alaska to bring food relief to local villagers.  They called ahead to make sure crowds would greet them at the plane, and then gave out boxes with food items, with the following two letters enclosed in the box:

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN
AND
LT. GOVERNOR SEAN PARNELL

We wish to extend our heartfelt greetings to you and hope this package provides you with much needed food as well as the thought that many Alaskans are thinking of your village during this difficult time. We appreciate all the efforts of Franklin Graham and Samaritan’s Purse, as well as the many volunteers, churches, synagogues and non-profits who have come together to provide supplies to your community.

The State of Alaska has many services available through the Division of Public Assistance. We have provided contact information for the different programs. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact the Public Assistance offices at  1-800-478-4372  or http://www.hss.state.ak.us/dpa/ .

Signed Sarah Palin and Sean Parnell

AND

Extending God’s Grace
in a time of need,

Your need has not gone
unnoticed by Him or by us.
As you look to Him, may He continue
to bless you and meet your needs.

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all your needs according to
His riches in glory of Christ Jesus

Praise the Lord, and Pass the Pilot Bread.

It’s a little difficult to maintain the separation of church and state if they’re in the SAME BOX!  So, Alaska….Does this mean Jesus is our co-Pilot?

Wow…everyone loves to receive a worthless bible verse when they’re COLD AND HUNGRY.

Reminds me of how I grew up, hearing all that stuff and knowing that the people saying it don’t really give one tiny, god damn.

Go home Sarah. No one truly cares about you either. Even my dear, Bible-banging Mother says you’re finished.

Always interesting the scripture passages these folks pick to advance their agenda.

Momma always told me, Honey, you remember these two verses, and you can forget the rest of the Bible and be just fine.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and will all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

So who paid for the flight, Samaritan’s Purse or the State of AK?

If it was the former, then the GINO did nothing official, so why was she there? If it was the latter, why is the state passing out measley food donations that prostletize a very specific sect? And to native people no less.

This is just so cynical it would gag a maggot.

OK, a couple comments from western NY.. Still no official (state) acknowledgement regarding private donations from lower 48, Alaska urban areas, etc? If not, pretty classless on you-know-who’s part.

Regarding Palin’s church-state symbiosis; if the evangelicals can find their way into the suffering towns/villages and do the “multiply fishes and loaves” thing, I’m fine with that. If not, …..

    Aussie Blue SkyNo Gravatar says:

It’s just so trashy to have a letter from the government inside a gift of so-called ‘charity’. That only serves to confirm that the entire exercise was for the benefit of the Palin future, and I would even wonder what Franklin Graham’s payoff is.

Personally I think the authorities ought to be looking into that self-serving little relationship. I’m sure it’s not appropriate for the government to be putting its stamp on charity.

  17. 17
    BodiePNo Gravatar says:

I grew up in one of those homes where we were perpetually listening to Paul Harvey and trying to glean news of End Time Events Occurring Right Now, This Very Minute! Perhaps because of that I am very, very sensitive to the blurring of church/state lines (not only is this not cool constitutionally, it’s also considered a Very Bad Thing by fundamentalists as well. You should have heard the uproar among the Adventists when John F. Kennedy was elected. It was the End Times for sure! And every time warfare erupts between Israel and Palestine? End Times! Thing is, that joining of Church and State is widely believed to be a major sign of the End Times among the Religious Right (no pun intended). Which is why it puzzles the heck out of me why they would be injecting religion into politics at every turn. I mean, they can’t seriously believe they’re THAT holy. I personally always did everything possible to DELAY End Time Events, though I held out little hope of being able to stop them completely.

As some have pointed out above, the Bible holds many verses, some of which serve nicely as vindication for those who would prefer to leave the poor, hungry, and sick to the Lord to sort out. Which is one reason I no longer use the Bible as a guide to behavior (or a scientific or historical document, or a religious or escatological road map, or anything else except a collection of ancient writings created to address various needs and collected because they vindicated the world view of those doing the collecting). Holy cow, that’s a long sentence. Move over, Herman Melville!

I would never blame Jesus. He taught us to love one another. We’ve got a brain to use it. Like, helping out immediately when the need is there, not waiting 1 and half months. Do unto others………that means the governor should think to herself, “what if these were my kids”……would she not, without any hesitation, aggressively release state funds, fuel, planes, immediately pull together an emergency meeting, create a board, change laws that define what an emergency is, etc.? I’m sure she would, if these were her children in need. And, Jesus taught, love others’ as yourself.

Posters and bloggers really came together and worked the Golden rule. And, Jesus would be pleased. And to boot, donations and help was sent, not done in front of the cameras for all to see. Don’t believe everyone who makes a claim of knowing Jesus with lip service. There’s an easy rule that the bible teaches, that defines what a christian is, It’s by their acts, not their talk.

” …if the evangelicals can find their way into the suffering towns/villages and do the “multiply fishes and loaves” thing, I’m fine with that…”

So long as they do it under their own steam, i.e. they paid for the trip. With
their own money, not some funds from FBI (Faith Based Initiatives). But if they did pay for it, why was the GINO there? And why was she, in the same boxes as the bible cites, handing out information on state services? Is this not a tacit endorsement by the state in the person of its governor of a particular religion?

    Just sayin’.

  21. 21
    SueNo Gravatar says:

It angers me that Sarah Palin latched onto Franklin Graham and Samaritan’s Purse this way. Those boxes were a gift from Samaritan’s Purse, not from Sarah Palin. If she wished to accompany them as a private citizen, that would be her right. But to mix her own political agenda into the gift provided by Christians was wrong. I wonder if F. Graham knew that her letter from the state was in the boxes. PLEASE, Sarah Palin, keep the government out of my religion!

  22. 22
    BodiePNo Gravatar says:

Maybe I misspoke–I didn’t mean to say that all Christians behave in that way, just that for those who choose to do so, the Bible can be read to offer “justification” for some pretty appalling behavior. I believe that Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Zoroastrians, Wiccans, and any other group can either behave ethically or inethically, morally or immorally. In my opinion, humanity can and should trump religion every time–and the wonder is that it seems to–just about every world religion has some version of the golden rule, for instance. I get uncomfortable when I hear behaving in a kind and loving way being equated with behaving in a “Christian” way. For me, the implication is that only Christians can truly show disinterested love for humanity. But that’s a long way from saying that Christians never exhibit those characteristics. Sorry if I seemed to say that.

    SueNo Gravatar says:

@Lance Yes, I have googled them, and it saddens me. I just emailed Samaritan’s Purse to let them know that I was not happy about her letter being in those boxes. I asked them to let me know if FG knew they were in it. I also told them that I did NOT want government in my religion. If one studies the entire history of “separation of church and state” in our Constitution, one will find that this was put there for the protection of churches. I have a strong dislike of Sarah Palin, and I believe (my opinion, only, no proof–sadly) that she contacted Graham and set this up mostly on her own and that she used him, his organization, and his organization’s money and airplanes to further her own political goals. It saddens me greatly that he was probably complicit, to some extent, in this.

  26. 26
    crystalwolf aka caligrlNo Gravatar says:

I get it now! If she just went with Sam’s purse she wouldn’t get paid b/c it would be a charity thing, but since she and Gov. lite went and wrote a note, she can collect gov.s pay for that day! And no separation of church and state!
Shouldn’t there be a ethics law against that? Did Jay Ramras collect state pay when he went to the villages??? :(
GINO just makes me sick, sick, sick! And then how she disrespected Nick Tucker during the visit! Disgraceful!
It could of been worse I suppose….I actually expected them to add Gideon bibles to each box of food… :!:

It’s my understanding that is was a Samaritan’s Purse venture, w/ their planes at their cost. You know darn well FG knew that pathetic letter from SP/PS was in there. How offensive that it was only applications for public assistance programs, rather than some phone numbers for the employment services and MANY MANY MANY native organizations around the state who have a WEALTH of information if only someone would gather it in one place for the rural Alaskans.

SP even said that she had no control over which villages they went to. Now, does that sound like SP? Naaaaahhhh… she’s not one to sit in the back seat. They’ve been involved, youbetchaberry. She ONLY brought cookies and public assistance forms – how demeaning (to her). She ONLY went so her rabid mouth spokesperson MS could lie once again w/ the SarahPAC announcement that SP TOURED the Western Alaska region and talked with the poor starving natives. You shouldn’t have to go on a TOUR of your own damn state, Sarah. You should have been there many times over and known where every single village was that you left out of your stupid tour. At least 53 villages in that region, I think? And they went to TWO?

1st Amendment – BAD PRESS & MEDIA – I HATE YOU! Gonna take this one away right now youbetcha! Oh wait, my religion is all mixed up in this one. Damn. OK, got it. This amendment just can’t have media and religion in one place because then I can’t just gut the media and keep the religion freedom stuff. OK, I’m gonna just cross the media part out and make a NEW copy for myself. I’ll get the others to follow along later…

2nd Amendment – YEAH, you betcha we’re keepin’ this one! Guns, guns and MORE guns for all!

3rd Amendment – I’m confused. What does “quartering” mean? Does this mean I have to cut up soldiers if we aren’t at war? Naah, this one doesn’t make any sense. I’ll fix it later when no one’s looking.

4th Amendment – OH this is a GOOD one! I have way too many of those white bony things in my closets. Wait, there’s a whole bunch of chemicals in the basement, what is Todd working on now? OK doesn’t matter, we’re safe – WHEW! Definitely keeping this one.

5th Amendment – I’m getting tired and my head hurts. These fake glasses, do, too. I HATE these glasses but gotta wear ‘em ’cause they make me look smart. I don’t get this one – what the hell were these people talking about? I’m going to go tan for awhile then take a trip Outside to further my cause. What is my cause again? OH YEAH, religious freedom within the state offices where I have guns but can’t cut up soldiers.

My my how does one keep up with all of this? I need a cookie – PIPER! GET ME A COOKIE NOW!

There are several things that bother me about this situation.
The plight of staving Alaskans was identified 6 weeks before SP and Samaritan’s purse rushed to deliver food to those in need.
People from all over the US had donated food and money while the needs of these people were ignored for the most part by their Gov. and state legislators except for a few who organized a food drive.
Then all of a sudden, without discussing this during an open session, the gov. runs to the rescue with an outside charity.

As I have said before, there is a need for charities and non profit organizations in meeting the needs of people during a crisis.
The state should have had a greater role in providing for these people. Charities should supplement a state role, not take the place of a states responsibilities.
She has co mingled church and state by involving herself and promoting this as a photo op. This is what is wrong, not the fact that a charity provided for people in need.

Glad we are back on topic (i.e. Sarah policy and antics) and off the baby business. It was beginning to feel like a Salem witch hunt in here.

So, my questions, if anyone knows off the top of their head (and I’ll do some sleuthing too): what constitutes a gift or perk that our Tour Director/Iron Chef-in-Chief must claim, disclose, and be charged for taxes? I think this is one area to keep close tabs on. If a private group is paying for airfare to two Bush villages, it is a gift that must be disclosed? Even deducting the cost of those donated cookies, that still leaves a pretty healthy travel perk for our Naughty Monkey Girl.

Who packed those boxes? State employees or FG acolytes? Makes a difference if the stuffers of those Bible quotes are gov employees. Ditto for SarahPAC and her jaunts to Indiana (gee, I used to like Indiana, too). Are these trips freebies, or does she have to pay to pass “Go” (and the IRS)?

So Sarah can take a swipe at legislators traveling to DC for business that is customary and also pertinent to state business, but it’s ok for her to teleprompt herself in front of adoring cretins for the purpose of, well, Sarah during the short, short session. She’s beginning to make Frank look good in comparison.

I think it is prudent to post some salient quotes from the (very sadly) late Scott Peck and his excellent discourse on EVIL – “People of the Lie”.
A long post but according to Peck’s own observations Sarah Palin is actually mentally ill and I feel these selected quotes are necessary to prove she is and they are definitely worth reading. He was a great psychiatrist and an unapologetic Christian – and possibly best known for another excellent book “The Road Less Travelled”.

The poor in spirit do not commit evil. Evil is not committed by people who feel uncertain about their righteousness, who question their own motives, who worry about betraying themselves. The evil in this world is committed by the spiritual fat cats, by the Pharisees of our own day, the self-righteous who think they are without sin because they are unwilling to suffer the discomfort of significant self-examination. (p80)

A predominant characteristic, however, of the behaviour of those I called evil is scapegoating. Because in their hearts they consider themselves above reproach, they must lash out at anyone who does reproach them. They sacrifice others to preserve their self-image of perfection….
Scapegoating works through a mechanism psychiatrists call projection. Since the evil, deep down, feel themselves to be faultless, it is inevitable that when they are in conflict with the world they will invariably perceive the conflict as the world’s fault. Since they must deny their own badness, they must perceive others as bad. They project their own evil onto the world. They never think of themselves as evil; on the other hand, they consequently see much evil in others….
Evil, then, is most often committed in order to scapegoat, and the people I label as evil are chronic scapegoaters. In The Road Less Travelled I defined evil ‘as the exercise of political power – that is, the imposition of one’s will upon others by overt or covert coercion’. (p82)

Utterly dedicated to preserving their self-image of perfection, they are unceasingly engaged in the effort to maintain the appearance of moral purity. They worry about this a great deal. They are acutely sensitive to social norms and what others might think of them….
The words ‘image’, ‘appearance’, and ‘outwardly’ are crucial to understanding the morality of the evil. While they seem to lack any motivation to
be good, they intensely desire to appear good. Their ‘goodness’ is all on a level of pretence. It is, in effect, a lie this is why they are ‘the people of the lie.’
Actually, the lie is designed not so much to deceive others as to deceive themselves. They cannot or will not tolerate the pain of self-reproach. The decorum with which they lead their lives is maintained as a mirror in which they can see themselves reflected righteously. (p84)

[T]he time is right, I believe, for psychiatry to recognise a distinct new type of personality disorder to encompass those I have named evil. In addition to the abrogation of responsibility that characterizes all personality disorders, this one would specifically be distinguished by:
    (a) consistent destructive, scapegoating behaviour, which may often be quite subtle.
    (b) excessive, albeit usually covert, intolerance to criticism and other forms of narcissistic injury.
    (c) pronounced concern with a public image and self-image of respectability, contributing to a stability of life-style but also to pretentiousness and denial of hateful feelings or vengeful motives.
    (d) intellectual deviousness, with an increased likelihood of a mild schizophreniclike disturbance of thinking at times of stress. (p146).

We can see, then, that their narcissism makes the evil dangerous not only because it motivates them to scapegoat others but also because it deprives them of the restraint that results from empathy and respect for others. In addition to the fact that the evil need victims to sacrifice to their narcissism, their narcissism permits them to ignore the humanity of their victims as well. As it gives them the motive for murder, so it also renders them insensitive to the act of killing. The blindness of the narcissist to others can extend even beyond a lack of empathy; narcissists may not ‘see’ others at all. (p154).

    And my favourite…
Forever fleeing the light of self-exposure and the voice of their own conscience, they are the most frightened of human beings. They live their lives in sheer terror. They need not be consigned to any hell; they are already in it. (p74)

We should probably feel pity for the poor mentally ill wretch, even as she throws various others under the bus.

I would say more than just the Natives got fleeced!
Check out FG place in Lake Clark- millions!!! of dollars it took to do that.
Poor BG to see his son trade on his name and good works – that is a disgrace. Doesn’t suprise me that he hangs with SP!

@ Bardette – that is an apt description of what we have seen in SP, “Person of the Lie”. I enjoyed this author’s perspectives in “The Road Less Traveled”. But no, my window of pity for what I can only hope is SP’s personal hell is long gone, never to return. She has damaged my beautiful state with her presence and lifelessness. She moves and talks, but there is no heart and maybe she already let her soul be saved, hence it’s absent, too, also?

Sounds like the organization should be called Samaritans’ Perks.

I think that in the spirit of ecumenism, or reciprocity, or whatever, the Native recipients of this smallish largesse should sent Governor Palin and Reverend Graham little cards with some of their sayings regarding human dignity and the obligation to help others — you know, a little proselytizing, a little outreach, and these loud obtrusive white people might convert and become civilized.

    Goodnight, Mudpups.

Wow, I missed a couple of days, ITs been so busy here at school!

It really bothers me to read all these bible myths. Worse now, that we have the Samaritans people getting involved.

The only people who will believe this are those who support her cause. But I get tired of her belittle-ing all the people who have helped. Is there a way to get this on KO?

That is very generous of you.

The trouble is George Bush and Adolf Hitler fit this diagnosis too and when these folks are put in a position of power we know the outcome.

It is far too dangerous to let these types hold any position of power.

I speak for myself when I say that, I am feeling absolutely no pity for Palin as she would allow the first nation villages to starve and freeze to death.

If they relied on Palin, they would all be dead as I write this.

Every effort must be made to ensure that Palin does not hold public office.

While Palin may live in her own version of hell, rest assured that she will have the rest of you live in a much worse version of it.

Martha UYS – No royalties needed……..shout-out works fine for me. Someone makes a laminated , wallet sized copy of the Constitution that we can get for Gov.Palin to carry , so she can remember how it is supposed to be. A cheat sheet if you will. At least she would understand that part. She can put it in her fur lined purse , right next to her OPM card !!

Her tour of Western Alaska with Graham was to show that God can help, but the State has to have a policy of “personal responsibility” so these people need to understand that she brought the God squad, but DO NOT expect the State to do anything.

From ADN Letter to Ed, 3/13:

Good judge will make a fine justice

All Alaskans should be pleased to see that Gov. Sarah Palin has chosen Superior Court Judge Morgan Christen as our newest Supreme Court justice.

In over 40 years of practicing law, I’ve appeared before many kinds of judges, good and bad. Judge Christen was one of the good ones. I have always enjoyed appearing in her courtroom and my clients and I have always felt we got a fair hearing from her. While Judge Christen didn’t always rule in my favor, that fact just shows she is only human and makes mistakes.

But our governor did not make any mistake in picking Judge Christen for the Supreme Court. Judge Christen is a delightful young woman who is smart as whip. She knows the law, she knows people, she listens carefully, and she does what she believes is right and fair. She is kind and personable. Come to think of it, I guess that makes Morgan Christen a lot like Sarah Palin.
