The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Hey, Palin! How About a Nice ‘Political Punch?’

When I read the blog entitled Palin v. Political Punch, I couldn’t help but think of this:

Just in case it doesn’t become clear to you, the little Hawaiian Punch guy with the crazy hair-do/antlers/hat is Jack Tapper, from ABC News, and the big doofus guy is….well….you’ll see.

A very irate aide to Gov. Sarah Palin contacted ABC News today to explain why his boss’s 31 requests for earmarks in the fiscal year 2009 budget, totaling $197 million, represent a victory for fiscally conservative values.

Hmmmm…..”a very irate aide?”…..  (index finger raised)…why, that must be…

“I am disturbed by this item,” wrote Bill McAllister, director of communications for Gov. Palin, referencing a blog entry from last night in which we referred to an article in the liberal magazine Mother Jones noting that Palin — after what seemed like a campaign against earmark abuse — was back at the proverbial trough.

“The headline doesn’t seem very dignified for a major news organization,” said the spokesman for the governor who repeatedly referred to then-Senator, now-President Obama as “palling around with terrorists.” He also quibbled with our referencing Mother Jones. (We also reference conservative publications here. But anyway.)

[snip]

“Governor Palin is a fiscal conservative,” he wrote. “Literally moments ago, the Alaska State House of Representatives passed a budget that differed little from what she proposed, that spends less in the next fiscal year than this one. She has spoken out on reform of the federal process, and it is a disservice to her that her position was so egregiously mis-reported last year and that those same false stories are now being used to make her look like a hypocrite — adding insult to injury, quite literally.”

Alarmed, I asked McAllister how Palin was “literally” injured. Was she okay? Was she infirm?

“I didn’t say physically injured,” he wrote back. “Certainly her reputation was injured by the erroneous reporting.”

Ah.

In any case, the point is, Gov. Palin as a vice presidential candidate claimed that she “championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending of Congress.”

And yet, she has asked for and is still asking for — and receiving — tens of millions of dollars in earmarks — pork barrel spending that does not go through the normal appropriations process.

This post had me literally rolling on the floor laughing.  Well….literally, in my mind.

McAllister said that for next year’s budget, Gov. Palin will only make eight requests, totaling $69 million, which will include “six ongoing federal appropriations and just two new projects: an upgrade at the Kodiak Missile Defense Facility and a bridge replacement critical to construction of the pending Alaska natural gas pipeline, also in the national interest.”

McAllister is too funny. The pipeline doesn;t exist so that bridg is another one to nowhere which Sarah said she’d build herself. It simply reminds everyone of that thanks, but no thanks and her taking the money.

It is impossible to believe that McAllister was in any way a respected journalist at KTUU, I think it was an infiltration plot and he was a good faker. Look at Jon Stewart vs. JIm Cramer – is it really wise to get pissy when all eyes are on you and you supposedly represent “the truth” when in fact you are full of crap? WHY oh why would you keep picking fifth grade fights w/ journalists at major networks?

We Alaskans know how stompy and whiny McAllister is, but he’s not doing himself or his idol any favors by goin’ national with it! Go Bill! You just keep writing those snotty emails and making those pissy phone calls – I like it. In fact, I LOVE it! Go Bill!

One of the comments on that article (parts of it, anyway)

“Your article is typical of drive by media who unethically attempt to down Sarah Palin and distract from the real news worthy issues. For example let’s look at Saranomics, While Obama is spending trillions and our economy is worsening, Sarah showed maturity and economic leadership with the funds of the largest State Budget in the USA. When oil was selling at $140.00 plus a barrel she created a budget based on $64…”

(and then set up a budget based on $64, when it was actually $47 – or some such. Also too… “Saranomics???” oh my)

“Additionally, she is currently working on Alaska’s own stimulus plan to help people with heating and other costs during this recession. However, do the media cover this good stuff? No! …”

(I nearly leaped out of my chair on that one)

“…They only attempt to dig up the dirt. However it seems one truth is emerging in media circles. It seems that Sarah is emerging as a Teflon politician, and the media cannot hurt her and her popularity is growing world wide! Perhaps that is what is scaring the extremist media to death. Every story you throw out gains her more support! 2012 is looking good for republicans every day! …”

But, but … her office issued a press release titled “Governor Palin Continues Earmark Reform.” Honest to god. I know this because I saw it on Fr33Repub1ic.com. Don’t go there. I do it so you don’t have to. Here’s the text of it:

March 13, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – With completion of the federal omnibus appropriations bill for 2009, Governor Palin today recognized her administration’s ongoing commitment to earmark reform, backed up by a continuing drastic decrease in the Palin Administration’s federal requests. “When I took office in 2006, I committed to every Alaskan and to Washington, D.C., that this administration would seek fewer earmarks and meet more of Alaska’s challenges with fewer federal funds, so needed earmark reform could be realized,” said Governor Palin. “I am proud of the fact that we slashed the number of earmark requests by nearly 85 percent, and we’re not done.” Palin said she is reminding Congress that of her administration’s eight pending requests, six are continuing federal appropriations and only two are new requests. “Our eight requests have broad public support and have been vetted through a transparent public process, and most of the projects are nationally significant,” Governor Palin said. “The new requests are for national security, with upgrades at the Kodiak Missile Defense Complex, and for America’s energy security, with replacement of a bridge that is critical for a natural gas pipeline.” Governor Palin said she appreciates other states that understand the dire need to participate in earmark reform so the next generation of Americans is not saddled in debt that we create today with requests for “short-sighted wants.” “My state can better participate in this reform and we’ll be a more self-sufficient state when the federal government finally allows us greater opportunity to safely and responsibly develop our natural resources,” Governor Palin added. “I look forward to the realization of the enormous potential Alaska has to contribute more to our national security and energy independence by unlocking our potential.” Currently, less than 1% of the total land mass in Alaska is in private ownership, excluding land set aside by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. ###

And the Haras (backwards) fans over there are defending it. Also.

Interesting re Kodiak Missile Defense Complex which is owned by the Alaska Aerospace Development Corp.:

The Legislature Finally Says “No More Handouts, AADC”
It would appear that the Alaska Legislature finally wants AADC to pay its own way, and to prove it can actually attract launch contracts before giving them any more handouts. Apparently, “build it and they will come” no longer convinces anyone. Of course, AADC said that for the initial construction of the KLC and hardly anybody showed up. And those who did (military launches) were probably there only because ex-Senator (now convicted felon) Ted Stevens pressured the Pentagon to pay for the KLC and launch there. The DoD has admitted that they had/have no need for the KLC.
AADC has admitted that launch revenues have not covered the cost of operating the facility. They’ve been living off state and federal welfare since 1995. And you thought bailouts were something new……..

No stimulus for AADC despite Palin push
Article published on Friday, February 27th, 2009

    Mirror Writer

It does not appear that the Kodiak Launch Complex (KLC) will benefit from state stimulus money as was anticipated, Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation President Dale Nash told the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly at a work session Thursday night.

It had been hoped that the KLC would get $35 million to fund planned expansion of the facility. In a Jan. 7 letter to Alaska’s congressional delegation, Gov. Sarah Palin named KLC among the state’s top five priorities for federal funding, calling it “important for the nation’s defense.”

“We are still hoping to get $7 million from the state,” Nash said.

To Sarah, if you are planning to abandon Presidential forever could you please let us know. All of your supporters are only given 24 hours in a day and a finite amount of time on earth and we all work hard for our money-we are smart enough to devote our time to other pursuits or causes and to invest our money with other GOP politicians that will further the conservative agenda or our fervent desire to take down the Messiah in 2012.
If you do not bow out, we must ASSUME (I know assumption is dangerous) that you do not plan to retire from the national political scene and plan to run for the Presidency in 2012 or in 2016.

To be candid Sarah if you decide to wait till 2016, as John Ziegler has suggested, I cannot guarantee that the enthusiasm and political capital that you have now built up for your candidacy can be bottled up and resurrected in terms of support or money in 6-8 years.
    Wow! just wow!

For the life of me I can’t see how these people, who are just highly paid liars, live with themselves. Do they honestly believe the crap they spew about or do they just have no scruples, morals, or honesty?

Does Karl Rove have a school that teaches this behavior? Do you do an apprenticeship under Dana Perino where if you actually tell the truth about anything you get a severe electric shock?

Like Lee Atwater, someday they will be lying on their deathbed and wondering why they sold their souls to the corporations. All except Karl Rove that is, that creep will never admit to anything.

In psychological terms the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of â??the other.â??

THe KMD system became part of Reagan’s Star Wars vision. What a waste of energy, time, billions of dollars, and scientific thinking.

Just think if we applied are national resources back then on renewable energy, a war on poverty, improving healthcare, or education. Were would we be as a nation or a planet? Reagan was a puppet for the men behind the curtain, the men that create fear, war, poverty, and environmental injustice.

I read a report about how the KMD system once, and it said that the # one benefit is the high paying jobs that are there. Thats a pretty week strategy for justifying defense spending in my book.

Why does the nation go for missiles, 5 hundred pound peace maker bombs,
land mines, and weapons of mass destruction. When is enough, enough?

Being a deep sea commercial fisherman in Alaska, we were always warned of up and coming missile launches, so that if the test missile went off course and locked in on our vessel, we were at least warned.

So BM is getting testy with ABC news network. How upstanding of him. He must be looking for more cookie’s from GINO before he crawls under the bus and hides again.

People around the state are getting really tired of the way The Palin always resorts to press releases to deal with people and issues – always issued by a spokesbot like McAssiter or Angry Meg Stumblestons. Of course, it means GINO can avoid taking/answering questions directly.

Maybe Palin is finally realizing that she can’t speak in coherent sentences?

Maybe she is gittin’ a bit a’sceered and is circlin’ the musk ox to protect her future, also?

I would like someone to point out to GINO Palin that if she was a true “fiscal conservative” she would have taken that extra oil profit windfall she got last year (to the tune of an extra $1,200 per person in Alaska) and used it to spend on the projects she is asking earmarks for. I love all the Alaskan citizens on this board, but I am frankly tired of subsidizing Alaska. They already are a welfare state taking home almost twice the amount of money they put into the Federal government and they hoard the gas company profits for their own use, even though we who live in the lower 48 have made that windfall profit available by being ripped off by the oil companies.

I want Congress to add earmarks funding psychological research for why Sarah and her cronies are such contemptible, dishonest crybabies.

You know, I’d like to see a lot of her shenanigans directed to John Stewart. He’s the only person right now who even tackles the tough issues and sheds light on such wrongdoings. He should have Bill McAllister on his show. Not Sarah, though. I don’t need to see that face…

Anybody else see the CNN interview of Dick Cheney by John King? I certainly wouldn’t want John King to be the pitcher for our local softball team. He pitched some light, fluffy softballs in that interview. Easy swings, easy hits. Can’t believe he let Cheney continue to link Iraq with 9/11, WMDs, nukes, and harboring terrorists…
John Stewart should investigate how CNN turned into FOX News…
