My apologies. I'm not Irish, don't ruin expensive alcohol with food coloring, have Irish friends that are tortured and agonized every March and avoid bars because invariably someone sings Paddy songs and cries on them about the "homeland" after too much green beer. They have no leprachaun and clover decorations and they're not impressed with attempts to make the worst cut of meat on the planet palatable with pickling spices. They do play great music and like soda bread.
I make good moose stew, but have no recipe to share. I can make spaghetti with bear sausage, also, too. Not my bear, a gift from a friend, also not Irish, and not related to the Palins. Once again, no recipe. I never cook anything ahead of time and never never leave the house with ovens and appliances on, because I will most likely burn the house down. I'm partial to a good hamburger on a Tuesday. Maybe some ginger ale. Or orange juice if there is some. Raisin bran's always good in a pinch, as long as the milk isn't sour. And that's all I have to say 'bout that.

I think it's a vanity to compare Palin to Obama. Before all the grooming, it was widely assumed that she was setting up for Ted Steven's spot, and that it was likely to happen. She may have missed an opportunity - she may very well have been better at a congressional role than Governor.
A better comparison would be another celebrity state-level politician, like Arnold in CA.
3/09 - "Schwarzenegger's rating dropped from 40 percent in January to 34 percent among registered voters in the poll that was concluded Feb. 17, two days before he and legislators made a final deal on the budget. Those low numbers stood in sharp contrast with President Barack Obama's 67 percent approval among registered voters, including a plurality of Republicans and 53 percent of those who labeled themselves as conservatives."
8/05 - "...in a poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, close to 54 per cent of Californians say they disapprove of the Austria native's performance--almost double the 28 per cent a year ago and slowly approaching the 67 per cent who weren't impressed with Davis two years ago. Tim Hodson, executive director of the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento, says, 'Schwarzenegger is crashing and burning because voters now view him as just another partisan politician and because people just want government to do its job.'"

Oh, yeah, back to on topic....

GC (15:52:27) asked: Question: how come missionaries never proselityze to their own groups and race? Why is it always an ethnic endeavour; India, Native Americans, Africa, South America, New Guineau, Micronesia, etc.? Why not L.A., New York, Toronto, London? How about those Scandinavian countries? Bring Jesus to White people in Norway…

Actually, GC, my husband's nephew is a Mormon, and he and his wife spent 2 years recently in Finland trying to convert the Finnish.

----------------------------

It never fails to amaze and amuse me to see the C4P types compare Sarah Palin with Barack Obama.

Not only are the two light years apart in philosophy, education, intellect, emotional connection with the people they purport to represent, dedication to responsibility, and motives -- they were not "paired" except in the minds of Palin's deluded followers. Palin will always be the gullible redneck sidekick to John McCain, and both of them lost to Obama and Biden. If Palin should be compared to anybody, it's Joe Biden.

And if she's lucky enought to avoid indictment, impeachment, or the popularity of GWBush before 2012, she rightfully should be compared to whoever runs against her in 2012, and only THEN will it be "fair" to compare her to Barack Obama.

My own opinion? I don't think she'll win ANY election in the future. Not even in Alaska.

My corned beef dinner last Sunday consisted of a slow-cooker, a nice 2.5lb slab of corned beef, set on "high" to cook for 3 hours (it started out frozen), then simmered on "low" for another 2 hours.

I steamed unpeeled russet potatoes in a separate pot, then diced them, sprinkled McCormick's Montreal Steak Seasoning over them, and sauteed them in a frying pan until they were browned. I also steamed baby carrots separately.

I cut a half-head of cabbage into 4 pieces, and layered the cabbage on top of the nearly cooked corned beef in the slow cooker.

Everything was ready after the cabbage cooked for 1/2 hour; the texture of the cabbage was very slightly crisp, but definitely cooked through.

I probably overdid the corned beef as far as cooking temperature and time; next time I'll try to remember to thaw the meat out thoroughly, then slow cook it on "low" for ~6 hours.

A friend of mine cooked the same meal for our monthly Bunco game last night, and she did a much better job on the corned beef, but I liked my cabbage and potatoes better.... :)

Actually, GC, my husband's nephew is a Mormon, and he and his wife spent 2 years recently in Finland trying to convert the Laplanders. If you've studied your history and geography, etc., you know Laplanders are related more closely to the Siberian Mongols than they are lily-white Europeans.

TXChick4Obama (10:12:29) : "Palin’s approval rating in her home state, which is arguably filled with like minded people..."

yeeaaahhh...no.
To the contrary - arguably NOT like-minded and frankly misrepresentative of the Alaskan people.
Nothing wrong with the survey tool, nothing wrong with the researchers and their work. They said straight out what it is, methodology, etc. They drew no conclusions. The problem is not context or relativitiy. The error is in the application.
The correct use of these approval surveys is to state the limitations with the data. Like this: "OF the people 500 surveyed in a prescreened sample, 60% were favorable..." and "83% of the sample identified as Conservative/Moderate, 76% were urban/metro area, 66% were older than 50 and without children."

Pro-Palin groups have to be delighted that this stuff keeps getting used; it suggests an endorsement from Alaskans that simply isn't demonstrated.

Which lends weight to my point above - Palin's approval rating in her home state, which is arguably filled with like minded people - may be high but in no way can be correlated with the approval rating of the POTUS. Furthermore, if one WANTS to compare the favorable rating of the two, Obama still far outweight Palin.

Speaking of polls, here is a new one from the Huffington Post;
A poll releasedby Public Policy Polling found that President Obama would crush Sarah Palin in a hypothetical, head-to-head presidential election for 2012.

Polling suggests that such a contest would result in the largest popular vote blowout since George McGovern ran against Richard Nixon in 1972.

Obama leads Palin 55-35 in the hypothetical contest. He has an 89-7 advantage among Democrats. Among Republican he trails 66-17. Last year exit polls showed Obama
winning only 9% of the Republican vote, so it appears Palin would lose a lot more voters
within her party than McCain did.

The poll showed Obama to have a 55 percent approval rating among voters, while Palin had only 39 percent favorability.

OT, but useful, if anyone still needs corned beef recipes for next year--I popped mine in a baking pan, added two bottles of stout and some water and the spice packet, put it in a 300 degree oven for 4 1/2-5 hours (added all the extra liquid because I wasn't going to be home to monitor keeping 1/4" of liquid in there like the recipe said to...). When we got home, I took it out of the pan, put in another and put it back into the warm oven while I put all the liquid (which included all the melted fat) into a large pot, brought it to a boil, added a ton of smallish potatoes, boiled for 10 minutes, added a bunch of carrots, boiled for another 15 minutes, and served it all. The corned beef was about the tenderest I've ever made, and now I have a bunch of potatoes and carrots to use with it for corned beef hash. YUM!
