KABOOM! Mt. Redoubt Blows its Top! (Updated Throughout the Day on Monday)
At 10:40pm Mt. Redoubt finally decided to erupt properly. We’ve been watching little puffs and steam clouds, but this is ash that is now at 50,000 feet above sea level!
Predictions say we’ll have a light dusting of ash in Anchorage by 2am and there’s an ash advisory for Su Valley until 4am, including Willow, Talkeetna, Trapper Creek, and Cantwell.
At 9:32 p.m., AVO issued an update stating that seismicity at Redoubt had increased significantly. At 11:02 p.m. it issued a release saying the eruption had begun.
AVO raised the aviation alert level to Red and will send out more information as it interprets the data.
Alaska Airlines has turned back four flights bound for Anchorage to their cities of origin. All airline passengers should check with their carrier for possible cancellations and delays.
There are flash flood warnings for Drift River, and mudflows possible for Drift and Crescent Rivers. Let’s hope those Chevron oil tanks on Drift River stay safe…
Click HERE and select an ash plume height of 52,000 feet. You can watch the ash cloud simulation.
Unfortunately the entire spectacular thing happened under dark of night and clouds. It would have been amazing to see. Anchorage residents may wake up to grey snow tomorrow!
UPDATE – Redoubt has had three significan explosions. One at 10:38, one at 11:02 and another at 12:14am. School closures, if there are any, will be announced around 4am. The Air Force reports that the ash cloud will reach Anchorage by 2am.
AN ASHFALL ADVISORY MEANS THAT ASH WILL BE DEPOSITED IN THE
ADVISORY AREA. PEOPLE IN AREAS OF ASHFALL SHOULD SEAL WINDOWS AND
DOORS. PROTECT ELECTRONICS AND COVER AIR INTAKES AND OPEN WATER
SUPPLIES. MINIMIZE DRIVING. LISTEN TO YOUR RADIO STATION FOR
FURTHER INFORMATION.
UPDATE 2
The Associated Press quotes geophysicist John Power as saying, “this is a fairly large eruption.” AVO is scheduled to have a press conference at 3 a.m. Monday. Channel 2 News will carry it live.
UPDATE 3
Another large explosion occurred at about 1:30am. Just looked out the door and no visible ash on the snow, but there’s a funny smell in the air. Well, on the chance that we’ll get no ash fall and I have to go to work tomorrow, I’m going to get to sleep. I’ll check back in the morning!
UPDATE 4 – Monday morning
Well, looks like Anchorage has missed the ash cloud for now. The eruption is still ongoing according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, and the activity could last a long time. We’ll just have to wait and see. There’s a light dusting of ash in the Susitna Valley.
My biggest problem seems to be staying up until 3am, and then actually having to go to work after all….. Volcano hangover. Ugh.
UPDATE 5 - 11:15am Monday
Ash is falling in the Susitna Valley. Looks like a light dusting. Cover your vehicles Su Valley Mudflatters!
And the latest about the Chevron Tank farm:
Cook Inlet Pipe Line Co., which operates the Drift River Oil Terminal on the western shore of Cook Inlet downriver from the volcano, said early this morning that it had begun shutting the facility down.
An approximate 10-member crew has been evacuated from the site, and flooding from melting ice and snow has already reached the edge of the terminal, AVO hydrologist Chris Waythomas reported at 9 a.m.
“We had confirmation that water is flowing over the heli-pad and it’s on the runway,” Waythomas said.
Dikes constructed around the tank farm after the 1989 eruption appear to be working, he said. The AVO staff is arranging a helicopter flight to the terminal to observe the area first-hand.
Preliminary data indicates that the recent heavy snowfall is keeping destructive mud flows in the Drift River Basin to a minimum.
“These flows are really, really watery,” Waythomas said. “They’re not these big slurry-like mud flows … like concrete. They’re more waterlike floods.”
The eruption has apparently destroyed instruments, including seismometers, positioned around the volcano’s perimeter, Waythomas said. It’s also knocked out the observatory’s webcam located inside a hut six miles from the summit.
The Anchorage Daily News will do a good job of getting the most current information out.

Kaboom is right. We’re up shutting all electronics and other sensitives down. Gotta go into work to do the same! Looks like I’ll be offline for a while.
Cover up AKM and protect your fabulous online asset!
I’m sealed up pretty well here at home. Work may be another matter! AKM
AKM, just please stay safe and report as often as you can.
Thanks. Worst case scenario is staying inside for a while. And the ash kind of wreaks havoc with electronics, and cars. I’ll report as things happen, but don’t worry.
AKM
AKM and fellow Alaskans, stay safe.
I realize this is a dire situation and not to be taken lightly for Alaska but does it seem that the timing is right concerning Gino? Redoubt is erupting at the same time proximity that Gina’s political career seems to be erupting. Could it be symbolic of the signs of time to come concerning Gino? I hope so!!!
ADN sez:
Ash is not expected in Anchorage or Wasilla at this time, the Weather Service said. An ash cloud is headed up the Susitna Valley west of Willow and is expected to arrive in the Talkeetna area around 3 a.m., said Dave Stricklan at the Weather Service’s Anchorage office. “It looks like (Anchorage) might dodge the bullet,” Alaska Volcano Observatory geophysicist Peter Cervelli said.

Yay! Thanks, Visitor. AKM
Can you hear the explosions? Sounds scary to me.
Thinking of everyone up there. How about Homer? They expecting any fallout?
I don’t think so. You may have an interesting view tomorrow, though. Do email me pictures if they’re noteworthy! Wondering if the profile will change from my view. AKM
AKm, I am not familiar with volcano eruptions, living in Southern California, except for what you have schooled me on and what I learned in school ( many, many years ago) but stay inside and take care of yourself and your family.
We Pups/ Mudflatters will have withdrawals from your informative updates and wonderful writing and wit that keeps us informed laughing, fighting mad and willing to protest againgst corruption, but your safety is more important now. So many of us will be praying and doing what we do to get our daily fix of Mudflats as soon as possible. The most important element is that you stay safe of Mt. Redoubt and after the danger is over and only then, give us a report. We heart you!
My safety concerns are with you all in the vicinity of Mt. Redoubt. It’s scary based on a partially green themed sermon I heard Sunday about the earth and the sea reacting to man’s sins against nature.
Sounds like Anchorage may not get ash which would be great. If you’re sending positive energy somewhere, please do send it to that Chevron tank farm which sits at the base of Mt. Redoubt right on the Drift River. There is a flash flood warning, and potential mud flows. Last time Redoubt erupted, the little Drift River had an output the size of the Mississippi River for almost two minutes. Keep fingers crossed.
Thanks all for your good wishes.
AKM: I am sending positive energy and vibes out to Chevron. As a former resident of Saint, Louis, Missouri and being familiar with the Mississippi River, I realize the magnitude of the output of what happened to Drift River. So, my fingers, toes and eyes are crossed for Chevron and any other part of Alaska that could be in danger. And my prayers go out to them. With that said, I am off to bed. Will check in tomorrow.
Stay safe everyone!! please. Watch out for lehars. . . and here’s also hoping the bright side will mean the grounding of the heliohunters of the wolves.
Sending positive energy your way.
Man, the extremes Palin will go to to distract from the negative press she’s been getting boggles the mind!
Seriously, take care all and you’re in my prayers.
Not sure if this is helpful……..stay safe and please wear a breathing mask outdoors.

POSITIVE ENERGY coming your way!!! Please stay safe Alaskans!
We heart you from Virginia!!
On a lighter note……….maybe this is why Sarah wears red all the time……..

Whew. Stay safe, Alaskans.
And incidentally, Bobby Jindal thinks volcanoes are much ado about nothing.

“Chevron tank farm which sits at the base of Mt. Redoubt right on the Drift River”
Has there been any new info that Chevron may have pulled out the oil from the tanks? I know they have been refusing to provide information.
Stay safe and cover your cars with tarps (if you don’t have a garage) as well as your noses! Hang in there AK!
I’m wishing all of Alaska well. Hope you don’t get tremors with your blasts.
Here – This should be helpful.

Weren’t there GOP congresspersons ridiculing Obama’s bailout plan for including funding for volcano observation/monitoring facilities? They need to “edumacate” (*trademark: W) themselves about the dangers of eruptions, including what happens to jet aircraft engines when they fly through ash. Send them all a nice big box of volcano ash, maybe with a label reading: “Kiss my Alaskan ash!”
I spent a week on the island of Montserrat in the West Indies while their volcano was mildly active, and visited that part of the island permanently evacuated after the Soufriere Hills Volcano began erupting in 1995. The ash has remained a constant problem for all of the island, but the mudflow damage was particularly striking to see.
I’m including a link to the MVO (Montserrat Volcano Observatory) website:
http://www.mvo.ms/
The observatory was established by the British Geological Survey and the Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. It’s now a statutory authority of the government of Montserrat, which in turn is subsidized by the Brits. Take a look at the quality of the observatory and scientific equipment involved for this one very small island, as well as the detailed monitoring. The website has excellent pictures and is generally a good educational source about volcanos.
Final comment: very interesting scuba diving around the island, with huge tumbled rocks from ancient explosions, and lava flows – but very poor visibility – maybe 30 feet, from the everpresent ash still falling on the ocean surface.
Be safe, guys- my parents used to have a house on Montserrat in the Eastern Caribbean and when Chance’s Peak blew its top, the whole city of Plymouth ended up buried in 20 feet of pumice, ash, and mud. The Island’s population dropped 75 percent and the area where most folk lived became a no-go zone. If you have to go outside, wear a surgical mask or at least a bandanna over your mouth & nose- pumice may look like gray snow falling, but those particles have microscopic jagged edges that can tear hell out of your sinuses, soft tissues & lungs.
Me, I’d stay home & keep a weather eye out for poor Brian.
I wonder what Jindal thinks?
Here’s more positive energy and prayers from New York State for all people (and tanks) in Alaska!
Ah…a bit of excitement to upstage GINO. Too bad ol’ Redoubt subscribes to the GINO version of “transparency.” What’s the fun of an eruption if you can’t see it? (tee-shirt: Redoubt erupted and all I got was this stupid ash cloud). Nice for Anchorage that the wind was in your favor. Sorry Talkeetna, park the snowmachines.
I do hope those Chevron tanks survive any mudflows.
And to think those liberal lefties are wasting bailout funds on dumb things like volcanos!
Wonder if the right wingers are rethinking that funding while sealed up in their homes?
“Kiss my Alaskan ash!”
I love that. It’d make a great t-shirt, too.

There is a great movie of the Montserrat eruption (well, one of them), but I think it is an educational film so it may be hard to get hold of. My three favorite volcano films are the Pinatubo one (you better put jam in your pockets because we’re all toast), the Montserrat eruption, and the Iceland one that almost blocked one of their harbors. For interested folks, the Pinatubo one is the easiest to find, because I think it was a Nova production.
I had access to all of them when I taught volcanic hazards.

womanwithsardinecan (04:38:34) : I have a different take on what GINA will do: Rush to provide aid and get her photo and words on MSM. I’ll bet she’ll be Johnny-on-the-spot because this is a “natural” disaster. You heard it here first!
BTW – I enjoy your posts.
More prayers and blessings from New York City and hope that the oil tanks are not affected (and hope they’re empty if they are!). Stay safe (((AKM))) (We heart AKM). And sending ginormous amounts of good thoughts for the safety of all the Brians and Brendas and wolves and bears and caribou and dogs and cats and other critters that they don’t suffer because of this eruption. We have earthquake tremors here occasionally. I remember once they were strong enough to knock pictures off the wall! Very very scary.

You mean a “natural disaster” like the avalanches that have plagued Juneau’s power grid the last couple of years? The ones she didn’t bother to respond to? I’ll take your bet and raise you. I don’t think she’s that good at multi-tasking and she’s swamped with “vicious” attacks right now.
And isn’t she actually in Juneau right now (imagine that)? She’d have to hop a plane and rush to Anchorage to pose in front of the ash plume.

Hey AKM-
and all the muddies and family I have in the vicinity-
Be safe.
Last go around mail and airflight were interrupted on and off forever…
Least we have the “tubes” now to keep in touch.
Stay safe, Alaskans!
I just took it upon myself to send a little email over to Gov. Jindal in Louisiana suggesting, while things are at Red Alert with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, he and his staff might benefit from looking at the AVO’s web site to understand why funding for volcano research is so important. (I was respectful, but I didn’t want to be….)
Maybe a few more Mudpups would like to notify Jindal of the importance of protecting Alaskans and other Americans living in the shadow of active volcanoes?! Back in the olden days, that kind of thing was referred to as “raising the consciousness” of someone. Lord knows, Jindal has plenty of room for consciousness raising!
If interested, here’s the link: http://www.gov.la.gov/index.cfm?md=form&tmp=email_governor
I, for one, after hoping that Southcentral Alaska is safe, am enjoying all the “new” pics of Mt. Redoubt. I used to travel on the peninsula a lot, and one of absolute favorite views was Mt. Redoubt – it’s hard to notice anything else! This makes me homesick for the gorgeous area where I lived. The volcano went off while I lived there and scared the crap out of everyone – but I didn’t know about those darn Chevron tanks then, and other than some light ash and missed flights, Seward was just fine.
This makes me miss terribly the lovely drive down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer – where the views of Kachemak Bay are breathtaking. Even though you take the beauty up here somewhat for granted, I ALWAYS miss the last beautiful place when I’m in the newest beautiful place.
I hate to ruin a Mt. Redoubt post (a million times more interesting and a trillion times more powerful than SP) with a mention of the twit, but I know her bots will start making stuff up about how she saved AK from the volcano (all the way from Juneau somehow). If it weren’t so incredibly stupid, it would be funny!
Tanks – stay intact and don’t go anywhere or do anything – got it?
Hope everybody is all right over there.
But wanted to post this breaking news from Putin: “Due to ash cloud, today’s scheduled Palin peekaboo game is postponed til May Day.”
yay, mt. redoubt!
sorry about the ill effects and hazards to those alaskans on the ground but i love it when the earth shoots fire!
i updated my post about it this morning and also included some info on the activity last week in the South Pacific.

I wrote to Jindal – and I was NOT polite like Elsie was. God help the Republicans if these two idiot governors are all they have. Well, maybe God can help – but can intelligence be infused into a person AFTER they’ve lived most of their life as STUPID? That really would take divine intervention, indeed.
I just went out to shovel the smattering of snow that fell late yesterday, and there was no sign of ash nor any particularly sulphuric aromas.
Perhaps the goddess Pele will spare Anchorage completely this time.
I hope and pray that all Alaskans stay safe, but I’m sure with Sarah P. to take care of you, all is well [/snark]. Was she aware of the volcano monitoring?

Sad but fascinating! Think of the stories you can tell the kids or grandkids.
Wow, I woke up went to buy fencing supplies and came back to check on my BFF’s and ya’ll have gone and let the volcano blow its top. I guess Mt. Redoubt had enough of the goings on of the hot air and spin coming from the government. I sure hope they emptied those tanks at the base of that mountain. Stay safe and I hope ya’ll will bet some good pic’s to show us.
i took my time. i looked a picture of Montserrat blowing its top. i read akm’s assurance that all would be well and not to worry. however, something was said about Chevron and tanks and ash and rivers and fire. so i thought and pondered and in my considered and humble opinion ‘ i beg you akm. grab spouse, the kids, the dogs and the moose and FLEE,FLEE FOR YOUR LIVES’. spring is springing in nyc and brian would love central park. take care and be safe….love b
Given this statement in the KTUU story, I’m not so sure that Chevron did move out the oil…
A flash flood warning has been issued for the Drift River near Mount Redoubt.
A Chevron oil terminal at Drift River just 27 miles from the volcano has initiated shutdown procedures to “both protect the health and safety of its employees and contractors and to safeguard the environment against a possible spill from its crude storage operations at its facility,” Cook Inlet Pipe Line Co. said in a press release.
Stay safe AKM and everyone in the surrounding area! Poor Brian & Brenda and all the wild ones…
I wonder when GINO gonna make a statement? Don’t governors usually make a statement… ” I will be monitoring the situation…” or something similar?
Oh that’s right, its not about HER, she is fighting off all those frivolous accusations and such… and we know the Alaskan people can’t depend on the government to help…
I just wish she would sacrifice herself to the volcano gods!

OMG…that is not good at all…! Is it just me, but why would someone let them build a oil tank near a volcano????
That’s crazy! And by a river!
@crystalwolf aka caligrl–
Yes, I think crazy just about sums it up…
Hope things have settled down by now. I’m surprised this isn’t a big issue on the main networks.
this from ADN today:
The AVO staff also warned authorities at the Drift River Oil Terminal — on the western shore of Cook Inlet downriver from the volcano — that mud flows and flooding from melting glaciers might be headed their way.
Cook Inlet Pipe Line Co., which operates the terminal, said early this morning that it had begun shutting the facility down.
At a 3 a.m. press conference today, John Powers of AVO said given the hot material landing on snow, mud and snow slides could be expected and staff would check the Drift River area at first light today.
Protective dikes have been constructed at the terminal since Redoubt last erupted nearly 20 years ago..
Does anyone know where GINO is? I heard she was in Wasilla on Sat or sun?
Wouldn’t that be something if she had to stay in anchorage b/c she couldn’t fly out? Or Juneau?
Or she could be stuck in Wasilla, and collect her per diem b/c she can’t fly out.
You still can’t see much of anything on the current webcam image. This is the CI cam. The hut cam is black:

Be safe, Alaskan mudpups (how is Jaime?), and keep an eye on Brian, Brenda- wolves are probably ok, since the helicopter hunters are still grounded. Warm hugs to all-
Looks like Chevron has a bad case of ostrich syndrome (ignore the worst and it will go away), while the biggest blowhard next to Mt. Redoubt is MIA. Heaven forbid that Palin be on top of a crisis…I need a “Where’s Sarah” button
I hope everyone is safe. It’s amazing how rivers can be affected. When St. Helens in Washington state blew out its side, we still lived in Wichita, Kansas. We had some ash on our cars three days later – about the time it takes for west coast weather to move to Kansas. Amazing.
Then I drove to Washington, through Portland, OR and up I-5, when we moved here in the fall of 1980. Mounds of ash were still piled all along the freeway. But it was the river that amazed me the most – still looked like it was very muddy and full of debris from the eruption (trees and everything else).
Were there any earthquakes with this eruption of Redoubt? Sounds like it’s very active at the moment.
Take care, all.
GINO hasn’t had her white chocolate skinny latte yet this morning. She never makes governorish pronouncements before caffeine and “fixing” her hair.
Here’s a fun bar graph of earthquake activity at Alaska volcanoes. Unfortunately it is not up to date. It only goes to March 12.

That one is pretty far away from the volcano and shouldn’t be affected. The hut cam is probably on the mountain, though I don’t actually know that for sure. It seems obviously affected (buried? Covered with ash?), but the CI cam was doing fine until a few minutes ago.
