Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Another Ethics Complaint Filed Against Sarah Palin. Cat Gate?

catgate1
Another ethics complaint has been filed against Governor Sarah Palin today. The list of Palin’s “gates” is long, but this complaint swings open a new one. Cat Gate. And this cat has teeth.

It all began when Governor Sarah Palin lowered the start flag at this year’s Iron Dog Snowmachine race. More than 30 teams race 1971 miles from Big Lake to Nome tracing the northern Iditarod route on “snowmobiles,” as those outside Alaska call them.

Last year’s champions? None other than Alaska’s “first dude” Todd Palin and his teammate Scott Davis as the famous Team #22. Everyone knows that. John McCain even talked about it on the campaign trail!

Palin’s sponsor? Arctic Cat – a brand of snowmachine and related gear. Arctic Cat really wanted to sponsor team Davis-Palin this year. For obvious reasons that go above and beyond Todd’s defending champion status, they knew that “Team Palin” was getting lots of attention from Alaskans, and the national media. All eyes would be on that bright green Arctic Cat logo.  Turns out there was even a photo shoot and article in Sports Illustrated this year focusing on the “first dude.” That’s some nice exposure; exposure that was worth $5000 for Arctic Cat to get permission to “brand” Todd Palin and his team.

But, as anyone who has taken time to consider “conflict of interest” or anyone who has read the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act (like, hopefully, our governor) knows, there’s a line that can’t be crossed.  If the governor’s family benefits directly from a private sponsor, (like getting a $5000 check from them) and the governor shows up to take an official role at an official event, representing all Alaskans, it’s a big fat no-no to show up plastered like a billboard with the official “gear” and giant flaming logo of the company that’s been paying you money.

It might look like…..you’re for sale. Now don’t get me wrong, as far as Alaska politicians selling themselves, $5000 isn’t a bad price. We’ve had state legislators sell themselves for far less than that. But haggling over the price aside, this is just not within the bounds of the rules of the state of Alaska. Period.

If not, I have the feeling Juneau would be hosting the Pepsi Legislative session, and we’d have the 3M Speaker of the House and the Napa Majority Leader. There would be meetings of the Kinkos Judiciary Committe, the Fedex Budget, and the Veco Senate President. (Yes, I know we’ve had one of those already.)

And imagine you owned the competing Polaris dealership.  You might be tempted to think…”Hmmm.  If I offered Team #22 a couple thousand dollars more than they’re getting from Arctic Cat, maybe I’ll get Sarah Palin to wear my flashy logo suit in front of the cameras next year!”  You see where this is leading.

Thus, the reasoning behind the ethics complaint filed against the governor today by activist and local blogger Linda Kellen-Biegel of Celtic Diva’s Blue Oasis. This will be the 11th complaint filed against the governor during her term in office. Other complaints have been filed by Anchorage resident Frank Gwartney, Wasilla resident Zane Henning, Anchorage resident Andree McLeod, and one or more who did not go public before filing their complaints.

[So, for those of you who have been playing at home since yesterday, speculating as to the specifics on "Implosion #5" I'll finish the cliffhanger sentence.

Today Governor Sarah Palin was stunned by.....the fact that people still haven't stopped paying attention to her unethical wardrobe choices.]

i already posted my two cents about this in the previous thread — i agree with rougemont. although i think this is clearly another example of la palin’s distant understanding of “ethics,” it will be used as a cudgel by her and her supporters making claims of “petty politics.”

i also posted in the previous thread this excerpt from a post up at gin and tacos some of you may be interested to go and read:

If they were smart – and let’s be emphatic about the fact that they weren’t – they would have said “Here’s this rube, this inexperienced, ambitious young candidate with camera skills. She doesn’t know her ass from a hole in the ground, but we can teach her.” They could have had her give that speech and then disappear for four years, back to the void of Alaska, while they taught her how to sound like she isn’t retarded in response to basic campaign questions. She would have left on a high note and then let the buzz build. By 2012…well, to be honest she probably would have been a formidable candidate if the coaches and strategists succeeded in teaching her anything.

    http://www.ginandtacos.com/2009/03/24/teaser/

IMHO, the more she whines, the worse she looks. So, I say, keep whining, keep complaining, keep saying that it’s so unfair, keep saying it’s all a vast left-wing conspiracy, keep whining that you’re not whining, keep it up. All of it.

And the other theory only holds if she actually WANTS to learn. She not only has no intellectual curiosity, but she is intellectually lazy. She’d rather get an A by winking at the teacher if she thinks she can get away with it. Just my 2 cents! ;-)

AKM, you’ve done a great job of summing up just why this is a big deal. Thanks for keeping us informed.

TeamSarah will poo-poo the story anyway, but who cares? What stuns me is that these dopey TS moms and dads are also the type that talk endlessly about “doing the right thing.” I should know, I used to call several of them friends (gave them up for Lent). All their pontificating is still ringing in my ears.

I’m also going to take this opportunity to share. Last September, I told my husband I could not keep my integrity and vote for McCain considering his choice of VP. Unfortunately, he’s one of those dopey TS guys who thinks she’s the “real deal” and “good Christian woman.” (Vomit) He made plans to move out so I filed for divorce the same day I voted – straight Dem ticket just to spite him. Afterward, I decided I did myself a favor by being on the right side of history. Long story short, my divorce was final one month ago. I’d rather be a “blankety blank pinko, commie, marxist, muslim lover” than married to a man with a you-know-what for Palin. All I feel now is relief.

These last few months have been tough, but bloggers and their readers have been what’s kept me from getting too sad about it all. It has been so cool to see most of you on other blogs. MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU.

@txindygirl, Thank you. You absolutely made my day. Hang in there, and welcome to the right side of history. :-) Hope to see you comment more. AKM

From my comment on one of the other threads: Actually, the current Acting AG is someone who has been around in the Dept. of Law since way before politics was a twinkle in GINO’s eye (I think; in any case, he’s been there for ages). He’s beyond reproach, so if this can get dealt with before she gets around to appointing a new permanent AG, we may be in good shape; although I think it’s an issue that has to get passed along to the Personnel Board, so maybe not so much, since we all know who butters their bread.

Also, Karen Loeffler is the acting US Atty., so this wouldn’t fall to her office, as it’s a state filed complaint.

    @ karen marie

I can’t agree with much in that post at all

“They could have had her give that speech and then disappear for four years, back to the void of Alaska, while they taught her how to sound like she isn’t retarded in response to basic campaign questions. She would have left on a high note and then let the buzz build. By 2012…well, to be honest she probably would have been a formidable candidate if the coaches and strategists succeeded in teaching her anything.”

People need to realize that Palin doesn’t listen to anyone, or learn anything thrown at her, unless SHE wants to try it, and if so, it’s done HER way. Her power has always been to “slide in under the radar” and then fire everyone who doesn’t agree with her. Then she smears their reputation. Or vice versa. Then she becomes incredibly bossy – but always sicky sweet to newcomers or new acquaintances. This is exactly what she did in Wasilla, and then what she did on the Oil and Gas Commission. Then on to Gov. Murkowski. And did you notice how she also tried it with Senator Obama? She could not have come back to Alaska to hide out – she was already crossing ethical lines as soon as she was Mayor of Wasilla and hasn’t stopped since. No amount of coaching is going to stick.

I heard so many rumors flying after she lost the election for the Rs- and I shook my head at most of them not coming out of Alaska. Oh, she’s going to move south (no f”in way), and on and on. She would NEVER step out of her “power base” for any length of time until she had established a new one just as good. Not gonna happen. She doesn’t have enough substance to train – her followers mistake her narcissistic personality for resolve and strength of character.

Because I think latest violation this is so significant. The ethics violation are well into double digits now.

This is proof that the Governor can be BOUGHT. Anything that can be bought may also be sold? This is why there is a AK code of ethics.

I have also done my best to give my 2 cents as to Palin’s psychological wounds related to beauty and fashion in the previous thread. To me, they are also significant as predictors of her future behavior.

Do Alaskans want a governor who is so caught up with buying/wearing clothes (“looking good”) that she cannot distinguish ethical violations or do the State’s business? While native Alaskans are starving? While the economy is in shambles? While the AGIA is now obviously a joke? While she turns down the stimulus?

I called my husband into the room to watch the interview – he had never seen her before that and I was still in awe at that point. She wasn’t the darling of the lower 48 Right at that time, so he wasn’t wearing blinders yet. He listened for a few moments before pronouncing her a “clueless, babbling moron who didn’t know what she was taling about”. Fast forward to the post RNC fog… “she’s the real deal.” Ha!

I don’t call Palin stupid or clueless, I call her imperious. She knows darn well that she pushes the envelope all the time and I’m certain she knows darn well what is an ethics violation is.

The problem with Ms. Imperious that she, like Rhett Butler, frankly doesn’t give a damn.

Her whole political and personal philosophy was succiently and correctly summed up by her when she responsed to critics by saying
I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can’t.

Unfortunately for Palin, her constant adversion to following the rules is starting to cost her some serious coin.

While she can bank on her ‘self-appointed’ personnel board to look the other way on those ever accumulating ethics complaints, the bottomline is that Sarah Palin is getting a whole lot of publicity these days and NONE OF IT IS GOOD!

In just the last couple of weeks she has gone from pathetic
    Bristol news to
    Bad Pipeline news to
    Disturbing Legal fees news to
Outrageous Education & Special Needs stimuluas funds rejection news
to now this – ethics violation #11 news.

After awhile all this Sarah Palin news just becomes a lot of obnoxious noise.

And the bottomline is she brings NOTHING to the table! Nothing!!!!! Nothing except for her imperious, all-for-me, rules be damned attitude.

martha: “People need to realize that Palin doesn’t listen to anyone, or learn anything thrown at her, unless SHE wants to try it, and if so, it’s done HER way.”

Spot on. After the election, independent advice to Sarah was to go back to Alaska, knuckle under, work hard, and seek educate. The counter-argument was that based upon her personality and past performance she is incapable of doing that. Now, after four months…nearly five, in fact…since the election, the facts are bearing this out. Palin is incapable of learning, growing or accepting responsibility for anything.

This last ethics violation is a glaring example. Even Cheney didn’t wear a Halliburton logo on his suit!!

AS 39.52, the Executive Branch Ethics Act, sucks. Celtic Diva will be swimming against a strong current. You can read the act at:

    http://touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title39/Chapter52.htm

Sections 310 through 420 are relevant. Especially note section 340– basically EBEA is a way for the Department of Law to contain public ethics complaints, to keep the complainers quiet under threat of fines, and to make sure the public never finds out if rulings and penalties against the governor have been made. I think the personnel board and the Attorney General exploit section 310 to the fullest.

If you would like to see how difficult it is to make a personnel board finding against the governor public, read AS 39.52.335– you’d probably have to go to court. This sucks– There could be very significant information about executive branch misconduct where public disclosure would definitely be in the public’s interest.

AS 39.52.410 (d) is interesting: “If the personnel board finds a violation of this chapter by a public officer removable from office only by impeachment, it shall file a report with the president of the Senate, with its finding. The report must contain a statement of the facts alleged to constitute the violation.”

I wonder if any findings have been submitted to the president of the Senate, and if this information is within the public’s domain.

The Executive Branch Ethics Act is not a good way to enforce executive branch ethics. It conceals public disclosure when elected executive branch officials have committed ethics violations.

And now someone wants to give her a nice jacket so that when she shows up as governor to start off the race she is wearing it in front of all the cameras.

What’s wrong with a good quid pro quo? She’s has said numerous times she’s only against them if someone else is doing it; it’s baseless if she is.

  93. 95
    ProfessorNo Gravatar says:

    @deist

Here’s my theory (FWIW): it almost doesn’t matter which violation brings SP down. At a certain point, the sheer volume of the complaints makes her a liability from a national standpoint. She’s already run up $500,000 in legal funds from being on the national scene for 5 months. That’s a hefty price tag. Give her 7 more months and that $1.2 million in legal fees…Who is going to fund that? If SarahPAC does, it will cut substantially into her “campaign” funds and is probably not a good idea from a Alaskan governance standpoint.

The evidence of Palin’s scofflaw character was there before the McCain pick, but the RNC thought they could just sweep it all under a rug and no one would be the wiser.

They also seem to think this is an Obama admin. plot, that no one in Alaska has the brains to figure out how to prepare and file ethics complaints against a state administration official.

Maybe not anyone of THEIR ilk does…

Even that stupid complaint about Sen. Kim Elton’s per-diems for 2008 being more than Gov. Palin’s (shock!) — they and Adam Brickley made a pretty big deal about that, but none of them bothered to examine the huge yawning abyss between Gov. Palin’s base salary and that of any of the Alaska state legislators, and why filing for the per-diems for every eligible day doesn’t even come close to what the state legislators ought to be compensated.

The per diem issue is apples and oranges. Legislators get per diem as part of their pay package. That’s the way it’s actually structured. Juneau leges get per diem as well, just not as much. Palin, on the other hand, who gets home, food and transport provided for her in Juneau, chooses instead to live elsewhere and get paid for it. They just didn’t bother to understand the bizarre way Alaska leges are paid. They saw per diem and got all excited without really understanding anything. There’s talk of restructuring the way leges get paid, but until then it is what it is. AKM

Wahoo- I think I may have caught some damage control?

Here is the March 11, 2009 Sports Illustrated article- and it’s wierd. It starts off with a description and photo of Tod’s 2008 orange snow machine, with text saying it’s the 2009 one- which is neon green. This is the only snow machine photo. The other two photos are of Sarah in her jacket, but without readable logo and one of her hugging Tod that is cropped so the jacket doesn’t show, though they do mention her wearing it.

So, Sports Illustrated created a story that does not give current image space to Arctic Cat. They’ve kept all their advertisers happy. If they are so careful about this they would rund wrong pictures, they must think it would be a mistake- or are they also cleaning up the Palin act a bit? You can see in the following excerpts that they are fawning on the Palins.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/the_bonus/03/10/palin/index.html
    Excerpts:
And so Todd Palin is free to be … the Dude. There are no Secret Service types shadowing him, no spin-doctoring publicists. No, he’s just another guy wandering the crowd, slapping old friends on the back, shooting the bull. And Sarah, too, is relaxed. Stylishly coiffed and hatless at 15 degrees, she takes a microphone and makes a few chummy remarks before praying that the snow machine’s enjoy “God’s protection.” The Air Force Honor Guard plays The Star-Spangled Banner in formation on the frozen lake, and one by one 35 teams zoom away, over the ice and into the bush. …

There is something masterful about Todd Palin. He is almost invariably calm, and he is handsome and rock-steady in an affable, unobtrusive way. He is the perfect political husband. But he is also a sort of sphinx — you keep trying to crack the enigma and glimpse the gears spinning away in his mind. You watch him. …

Some Iron Doggers have spent upwards of $30,000 to finance a once-in-a-lifetime run into the wild heart of Alaska. Tapping their credit cards, they’ve shelled out $10,000 each for a 2009 snow machine, $10,000 more for an identical training sled, $2,500 for the race entry fee and a few thousand more for trailing airplane support. Palin and Davis, in contrast, have spent almost nothing. They are prodigiously sponsored, with their names monogrammed in script on their matching Arctic Cat jackets. (Palin even has the names of his five kids and his wife, SARAH, THE GOV, appliquéd on his snow machine hood.) They give inspirational speeches at trade shows. They are both adored and reviled. They are the New York Yankees of snow machining. …

“…this race is very important to me. I wouldn’t devote so much time to it — I wouldn’t spend so much time training and wrenching — if it wasn’t so frigging important.” His eyes are electric. For a second you see the fire that has propelled him into the winner’s circle and that flames up whenever, as he puts it, “that kangaroo court down in Juneau tries to ruin my wife’s reputation.” Todd Palin is irked.

  129. 131

I hope President Obama’s eight years in office will have a positive effect in this State and put a stop to the strong racism.

Eh, they’ll just use it as a recruitment tool. Some of them are already trying to brag about doing so.

Her whole family, and even her husband’s snow machine are covered in Arctic Cat logos. Are we to believe that Palin is giving significant increased exposure to their brand because she matches her family? Silly at best. The difference in the amount of publicity for the brand name is so marginal as to be insignificant. What do we want Palin to do now? What is the correct punishment that we think should be meted out for this ethical nightmare? An apology? Cross out the name on her jacket with a Sharpie? Can someone tell me truly what that punishment should be? Because if it is just to stop doing this in the future (that’s my guess, if the Personnel Board doesn’t just throw this out), then this whole exercise is a lot of expense and wasted time for everyone. And just like all these discussion about Sarah’s kids, it undermines the very real and significant questions about her conduct, and her fitness for her position, that have been raised.

I completely disagree! Palin shows up every year for the start of the Iditarod as the governor, and she does NOT wear any sponsored clothing. These races are a big deal in Alaska, and the right thing to do (not that she has an inkling) would have been to show up as governor, smile and wave at everyone, and kiss hubby goodbye. She could wear the furs or the native coats she usually does to these events. I do not doubt that some teams were intimidated by her blazoned back, and she didn’t need to do it for ANY reason. Everyone knows who her husband is, and the kids could have worn their jackets w/o a problem. I completely and utterly disagree that this was OK.

This is the document used specifically to train executive branch employees, based on the Ethics Act rules. Palin should have this tattooed on her butt!

Ethics for Alaska’s Executive Branch – A Self-Guided Training Tool

    http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:OgcbmSVBSAIJ:www.law.state.ak.us/ppt/self-guided%2520ethics%2520training%2520revised2.ppt+ethics+complaint+procedure+alaska&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

    Misuse of Official Position

The Ethics Act prohibits misuse of an official position in several different ways.

For example, it prohibits using an official position for personal gain. It also prohibits using an official position to intentionally obtain or grant unwarranted benefits or treatment for any person.

The Ethics Act also prohibits accepting, receiving, or soliciting compensation from anyone other than the state for performing official duties.

Another type of misuse of official position is using state time, property, equipment, or other facilities to benefit “personal or financial interests.”

“Personal interests” include an interest, membership, or other involvement in any organization from which anyone receives a benefit. It doesn’t matter whether that organization is fraternal, nonprofit, for profit, charitable, or political.

“Financial interests” include an involvement or ownership interest in a business, property, or other relationship that is a source of income or from which a financial benefit has been received or is expected.

Under the Ethics Act, your “personal interests” and “financial interests” include not only your own interests, but also the interests of your “immediate family members.”

The question isn’t, at this point, are the complaints against SP frivolous or not. What has actually happened is that she has betrayed her public office to the extent that she really just can’t slide on the stuff that regular politicians get away with.

The public turns a blind eye or forgives a lot of indiscretions of political figures that are perceived as doing basically a good job. But SP has angered so many, many people in so many ways, from all walks of life at this point that she really can’t make a move without being scrutinized. And she just continually piles on bone headed moves, as well. As it was said over the weekend, you know Sarah’s going down when even “rednecks in Alaskan bars” are grumbling and fed up with her.

For this state of affairs, she has NO ONE to blame but her little ol’ self, her great big mouth, and her own lack of good judgment, political savvy and compassion – and probably the worst cast of advisers that has ever graced the court of a dying queen. Ever anywhere on earth. Again, her advisers are her choice, and in the end, it all just comes right back to her.

Sponsorship is about logos, On Sarah, on Todd, on her youngest daughter.

If Sarah were their in her capacity as governor, she should not have ANY logos on her clothing, or promote, advertise any brand name.

If her daughter was invited to accompany the governor, so Sarah can collect per diem for her, SHE should not have any logos on HER clothing, or promote, advertise any brand name. That would be a repeat offense for Sarah because of previous disallowed per diem claims for her children.

The Palins were paid $5,000 for their efforts. A tangible transaction.

    This reminds me of an old joke;
Man says to women in bar, “would you have sex with me for 1 MILLION dollars?” Women” well, yes I would”
Man” would you sleep with me for $10?” Women “what do you think I am, a whore?
Man “we’ve already established that, now we are just dickering about the price”

Apparently all you have to offer Palin is the $10 off the bat!

When Ted Stevens finally “got his due”, it was not over much money.
When the FBI went after mobsters, they ended up using the tax code, instead of charging them with all the murder and other mayhem they committed.

Thugs and crooks are usually brought to justice over minor or unrelated breaches of law.

    SMRNo Gravatar says:

As to whether or not this should be considered a viable ethics breach, it seems pretty simple, really.

Either she goes to the Iron Dog as the Governor, in which case the state pays for her plane fare (god knows why or how she always manages to stick the state for a kid or two as well, but that’s a DIFFERENT ethics complaint), she wears the usual outdoor garb (Big down jacket — usually black — and winter boots), wishes everyone good luck, sneaks a kiss in w/Todd, and waves the flag.

    OR

She pays her own darn plane fare (and that of her huge brood), wears whatever she likes, keeps her governor’s mouth shut, lets someone else wave the flag, and acts like every other wife there, waving & shouting & hugging on the departing spouse.

Seems to me that she chose a combination of the two, and when you throw in the Arctic Cat sponsorship (it’s quite a stretch to believe that $5000 covers the full amount, as embroidered jackets for the whole family must cost about $1000 at least, never mind snowmobile parts, etc etc, and you can put me under the heading of not believing anything that she says, so don’t believe that figure is accurate by any stretch of the imagination), the fact that she was there as GOV and yet wearing her ACat garb, well, it’s ethically challenged to say the least. Therefore, ethical violation.

While in an elected position, one must always err on the side of caution/circumspection, though we don’t see much of that from our utterly crap Gov.

But is there anyone in the AG’s office who has the brass to take this seriously? Or maybe they are obliged to treat every ethical complaint seriously? I’d like to see a nice big fine & further investigation of this & similar issues. Housegate housegate housegate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sports Illustrated could quite easily have done their article with photos at the race and a follow-up with the family angle at their house, everyone wearing their usual clothes (that’s heels for Piper, RNC clothes for SP, Carharts for T). Imagine that SI is as cognizant as all other media that the SP clan sells copy, the more controversial the better, but it does appear from comments that they went to great lengths to remove the AC stuff from photos if not from the text of the article.

Until she was cast into the limelight she was quite willing to pall around with Dems, yet during the campaign she was the ultimate spewer of hate.

Lately, she’s been eager to be embraced by Mr and Mrs Greta, in spite of the fact that they are Scientologists and are both openly crushing on her and the Toad (I love saying that). She should be grossed out, but the lure of lucre draws her into that symbiotic cesspool.

    mipartee: “Sadly, from my perspective….”

Rob in Ca: “Sorry to say, but I think…”

Prefacing your remarks with such dolor is intended, of course, to remind the reader (sigh) that your eyes are wide-open if not actually tearful at the true state of affairs in our country: Corporations run amok, greed and avarice ruling the day, nothing can or ever will be changed, inertia has won…..and King Arthur’s Round Table was just a myth.

Realistically speaking, the government is lousy with corporate influence. Only the disinterested or naive would believe otherwise.

And, yes, on the scale of corruption, Palin’s “Arctic Cat Caper” bothers me a whole lot less than the war crimes of Bush/Cheney or the AIG debacle.

But….I also think it’s time for the American public to stop prefacing their opinions with the sadly resigned and inertial comments of defeat. It takes little energy, expertise, or even wisdom to point out the problems….It takes tremendous energy, resolve, ingenuity, working togther, and just plain “fire in the belly” guts to fix the problems.

Activist blogger Linda Kellen-Biegel is doing her part to try to hold ONE politician accountable who considers the state’s ethics laws as “optional” and who has been stubbornly willing to cut ethical corners. BTW…When do the small ethical corners morph into larger corners? Like AIG. Like Bush/Cheney’s wiretapping and war crimes… Did they start with small unethical steps that went unchecked until they hit an exponential growth and got out of hand? Yes, I think that’s more probable than some cartoon “evil” person plotting the whole scheme years in advance.

More people getting involved, even just a little bit, can make a difference. We did it it with Obama’s historic election. We can do it with our government by taking on one greedy, self-serving politician at a time. Will it ever be perfect? Hell, no….but it just gets worse if we don’t try. Now that’s the REAL realistic assessment.

Inertia. The greatest enemy. It all goes back to physics in the end, my friends.

    (clap clap clap) AKM

Second, I do not think her actions, in wearing the Arctic Cat clothing, were appropriate. She should not have done it and should not do it again.
I just think that spending a lot of time and money on what coat she wore for an hour is fruitless, and in fact will undermine our cause because it comes across as petty and vindictive. Better to just publicize this error and let the light of day do the job of preventing a recurrence.

I have mentioned before I am Canadian….and I know many other muddies are too. The panel on Fox was ridiculing our Canadian men and women in Afghanistan. One person was not even aware that any Canadians were serving there. We have been there since 2002 and have no plans to leave until at least 2011 if then.

My sister in law is there as a matter of fact. The worst of this is that they chose the very day that an IED took the lives of 4 MORE of our canuck heroes, and injured 8.

From a previous post by someone else: “The Executive Branch Ethics Act is not a good way to enforce executive branch ethics. It conceals public disclosure when elected executive branch officials have committed ethics violations.”

While this is a good complaint and I love that it has been filed, do NOT get excited that ANYTHING will come of it, OR the others !

Legal issues can be a roller coaster ride for the emotions that you cannot comprehend. Finding a “smoking gun, with fingerprints and dna from the suspect who also confessed to the crime” do NOT guarantee punishment NOR JUSTICE.

Our legal system –generically– is often maliciously compromised ( i.e. like the Petumenous report) and intentionally waylaid, either for political or monetary reasons.

While this new filing is certainly newsworth, it is not worthy of getting THAT excited about. You only put yourself through unnecessary “roller coaster” rides when you continue to think that ” the facts are there, it is obvious to anyone, there is NO way she cannot be punished for this, we got her this time !!” when in fact those “facts” mean nothing if someone wants the outcome to be different.

A “CLIFF HANGER” TO BE EXCITED ABOUT IS WHEN MR OR IM GET EARLY WORD FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE THAT SHE HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY, NOT THAT ANOTHER COMPLAINT, FOR WHICH SHE MAY BE FOUND GUILTY, HAS BEEN FILED.

Don’t do this to us anymore, please.

Palin is truly a frightening person and I don’t want this emotional roller coaster to go any higher or lower than it needs to go.

The new AG is Rick Svobodny, who has been around forever and was our DA for a very long time. He is NOT in Palin’s pocket, and he isn’t the one that handles the ethics complaint against the gov. It does go to the Personnel Board, two standing and one appointed by her, and they will consult outside council (yes, probably the Tim guy).

They become more & more marginalized as the days go on, and really they are a lowest-common-denominator outfit. Interesting how both Fox and palin appeal to the most negative hateful crowd, they’re a match made in heaven.

However, as the Nov election showed, this country is moving in a different direction, becoming more tolerant, and Fox does not speak for the majority of Americans.

TO Martha Unalaska Yard Sign (14:46:37) :
I know Petumenous is not the “new” AG, I just could not remember Svodony’s name.

I hope he is NOT in her pocket BUT REMEMBER PETUMENOUS WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EITHER AND HE ALSO HAD A GOOD REPUTATION.

I was shocked when Petumenous came back with his result. I felt at worst, he would have to justify disagreeing with LEgis. Council findings and I did not feel he could do that.

Well he didn’t “do that” if you read the letter from Jeff Feldman ( Walt Monegan’s attorney) who tore Petumenous’ findings apart.

My point is that Petumenous blatantly disregarded the facts and fairness in order to spin his rationalization as he did AND and any AG can do the same.

TO CLARIFY THIS: I went through 6 years of civil rights litigation against the AK State Troopers for sex descrimination in their hiring process. JEFF FELDMAN WAS THE HEARING OFFICER ! ! ! ! Against all facts presented by the Human Rights Commission attorneys, he found against me and his report was obviously written prior to the final hearing ! Word in “lawyerland” was that he had only taken the case as he thought it was interesting, did not think it would drag out for 6 months ( of hearings !) and he did not anticipate being paid so little, i.e. about 1/5 of his normal hourly rate. As well, as a prominent defense attorney, he did not want to anger law enforcement (both troopers and APD)and the Department of Law by ruling in my favor which would have made them 1) hire me and 2) pay me close to $350,000 is lost back wages. WHY? Because it is hard to argue plea bargins for your client when the prosecution is reminding you that you ruled against them in the civil rights case, made them hire a “ugh” woman and pay her hundreds of thousands of dollars AND MADE THEM LOOK LIKE THE BAD GUYS.

One reason Monegan hired Feldman is because he is so damn good.

Feldman told my HRC attorney, I could appeal his hearing and he was sure I would win the appeal. Passing me on to a higher court got Feldman out of the double bind he was in. Facts / honesty would not allow him to rule against me, and his career and future clients would be damaged if he did.

MY POINT IS THAT EVEN GOOD GUYS DO NOT ALWAYS RULE THE WAY FACTS AND THE TRUTH DEMAND THEY SHOULD !

I hold nothing personal against Feldman, I understand his situation. Personally, I think he liked, and admired me for what I was doing. It just got political.

I read the Story about the Belly of the Beast and the ‘ Where’s Sarah ‘… and then just saw a comment about a ‘ Scoop Me ‘ sticker.

The ‘Where’s Sarah ‘ pin has to be worn on clothing. Why not use the same thing and put it on round adhesive disks-Stickers…. that could be stuck on anything… or
ANYWHERE..? they would stick to walls,.. or glass… anywhere. You want them to be seen. (like years gone by with the ‘Kilroy was here’ ) Or the Smiley face.
They could be placed ….and pop up everywhere…?

I think they could be manufactured (by some printing company) but to keep the cost at a minimum most print programs allow you to print a ” sticker ” with software on your average computer…. and maybe in various sizes….even some LARGE ones.

Just an idea…. You Mudflaters are pretty creative already.

Having just come from living in the UK for several years, I can tell you that we got “you’re not like other Americans!” a lot. I mean A LOT. We lived in a small village and there was a lot of silence on the part of the locals initially. When we moved away there were a lot of tears on both sides. Now I get plenty of emails asking when we’re moving back!

It’s a complex situation — loving your country, hating where its leaders have taken it to, trying to love your fellow Americans even though someone like Bush is elected because there are both so many haters, so many controlled thru the Republican fear-mongering, and so many too apathetic to bother participating in the political process, one of the greatest gifts of living in a democratic country.

As I said in my spammed comment (that hopefully will pop up for you at some point), I’ll be moving to Canada soon, so you can PM me over at the forum and we can try to cobble together a Canadian mudstock!

I know the feeling – some days when I think about how much time I’ve wasted (and much more that I won’t go into here) over tracking the twit gov so she doesn’t go anywhere – I just get MAD. And I feel that it’s so UNFAIR that there is all this corrupton out there when I try personally to be a good and decent person. I’ve worked as a public servant, with schools, w/ youth recreation & guiding – and all of those positions require a constant refresher on ethics at work.

It’s the unfair part that really gets me, then I remember a scene from one of my favorite movies, The Long Kiss Goodnight, where the daughter saves her mother’s life by yelling “Life is not fair!”. You have to see it to understand.

I agree with you that there is likely very little hope for this to gain much traction. The personnel board is stacked against the truth when it comes to palin. Our state is not well-served, justice is not being served, another day, another ethics complain, yawn… business as usual in Alaska with HER as gov.

I didn’t read your comment as critical of the bloggers as much as discouraged re: the possibility that anything will ever come of this. And I agree with you, I am sad to say. History does not give one much reason to be encouraged.

    We can hope, though.

I also agree with the commenter Rob that this would have been nice info to toss into the blogosphere and let her be tried via the media instead of going the formal complaint route. However, I do think that it constitutes an ethical violation. Just not sure that anything will come of it. On the good side of the equation, though, perhaps if they begin to dig into the Arctic Cat issue they will find that they dollar amounts reported don’t match the real dollars involved. $5000 is petty change when talking snowmobiles. Likely there’s a check for $5000, and then there’s about another $5000 or more — unreported — that was really handed out to the gov’s family.

All in all, I think that there’s a lot of frustration because so many of us wanted to see something that was going to bring her down in flames instantaneously. I’d have loved a taped conversation with Bill Allen or something like that! But this is what we got…

Get a grip. My sister is one of the most positive forces fighting in the trenches every day to end the Palin Era. She fights with humor most of the time, and she NEVER gets discouraged, no matter how hopeless this battle seems sometimes.

And I really have to disagree with people thinking that housegate is going to be PooGINO’s downfall. Spenard is in the Palins’ pocket, and there is no paper trail to follow. Todd’s buddies carried that stuff over in the dark of night. Declarations that the windows and railings are “just like the sports arena” mean nothing in a court of law. As somebody pointed out when they mentioned Capone, it is going to be the “little” things that bring GINO down. And I don’t even think the Arctic Cat issue is little. It is a clear conflict of interest, and thus a clear ethics violation. Poo Pooing it (sorry, can’t help myself) because it isn’t sexy enough is not facing the reality that is GINO. And getting discouraged when we are actually making progress in ridding the public world of that disgraceful GINO just can’t happen. We need everybody on the front lines, fighting hard, chewing away at those ankles in those stupid boots. We won’t be stopped by a wimpy personnel board, we won’t be stopped by threats? from TeamPoo, we won’t be stopped by ANYTHING until that woman slinks home to Wasilla and shuts that stupid mouth of hers forever.

Instead of waiting for one of these gates that is going to involve somebody leaving the Palin camp and spilling the beans (bribes and threats are great for keeping people quiet, especially if they aren’t that big in the ethics and brains department anyway), the sensible thing to do is to continue to go with the ones that are easily proven and just let them pile up. My former house-mate was among the first Canadian troops there, in a multi-national early search for Bin Ladin in Tora Bora.

Lets compare miltary effort. This is a cursory search and may have major errors- I used Wikipedia for the US source:
The US has 3,000,000,000 people and almost 3,000,000 military (?), about half reserves. This is about 1 person in 1000. It has about 140,000 troops in Iraq at any given time. It has had 4260 deaths- 3.04% compared to average force size

Canada has 33,000,000 people (= Califoria) and 42000 troops, 25000 reserves and 20,000 admin– say 67,000 military including reserves. This is about 1 person in 500. It has 2500 troops in Afghanistan. It has had 116 deaths – 4.6% compared to average force size

Governor Comments on Latest Bogus Ethics Complaint

March 24, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin issued the following statement in response to another ethics complaint filed today. Filed by an Anchorage political blogger, the complaint alleges the governor “… improperly used her position and state resources to serve her personal financial interests by being a walking billboard for Arctic Cat …”

“Are Alaskans outraged, or at least tired of this yet – another frivolous ethics charge by a political blogger? This would be hilarious if it weren’t so expensive for the state to process these accusations and for me to defend against these bogus harassments. Yes, I wore Arctic Cat snow gear at an outdoor event, because it was cold outside, and by the way, today, I am wearing clothes bearing the names of Alaska artists, and a Glennallen Panthers basketball hoodie. I am a walking billboard for the team’s fundraiser! Should I expect to see an ethics charge for wearing these, or the Carhartts I wear to many public events? Oh, yeah…one of the Mayor’s flunkies. Who wants to bet that Ms-we-don’t-want-no-stinkin’-buiding permits made sure that the records were “lost” or, oops, covered with sharpie doodles?
I would LOVE for housegate to bite GINO on her latte arse, but cronies, bribes, and threats may have taken care of the crumbs of a paper trail. If any of it is still left, then some intrepid soul needs to get to the Wasilla city hall and demand some paper per the freedom of information act. And another intrepid soul needs to count every single window and board at the sports complex and then get hold of Spenard’s records. My biggest complaint with depending on housegate to bring GINO down is that I don’t see anybody doing this. I don’t live in Alaska anymore, or damnit, I’d do it.
I could do it under cover of visiting my aunt and cousins in Big Lake. But I’m not there. Do I hope that there is somebody undercover doing that? You betcha! Am I counting on it? NO fricking way! I say keep the pressure on where pressure can be applied, and to hell with what the braindeadies say. They are so beyond irrelevant as to be irrelevantly irrelevant. (I hope that’s not a double negative)

RE: “housegate”….wait. watch…. It all took place when just after SP left “office” as ‘Mayor Thrilla from Wasilla’ and while she was head of TS’s PAC when TS was getting illegal housewarming “gifts” therefore such as places everywhere such as places like Wasilla therefore such as…

Spenard wont matter when the FBI comes a callin’…I’m sure the FBI AK SAIC knows them already.

Look at the glass rails and windows in her house and the Shprts Shrine…
    Co-winky-dink? Methinks not…

womanwithsardinecan- I hope somebody is on housegate too. Todd spilled the beans in that interview. I built this house myself with the help of contractor buddies. You know some of the guys working on the icerink were also working on the house. You know some of the supplies from the icerink ‘accidently’ ended up at the house. Somebody knows something. It would only take one poor desperate laborer to come forward.

By the way good job AMK once again you ahead of the regular media.

If the feds can investigate Steven’s Veco crib out in Girdwood, they sure as heck can investigate Palin’s diggs out in the valley.

I think someone ‘in the know’ is plugging their nose on this one, but sooner or later they will have to come up for air!

Oh, I absolutely believe there was chicanery with housegate. The windows, the railings, the same appliances? SBS does not supply crews to build houses, in any way. Nothing but supplies. Who handled the actual construction of the arena? Howdy Investments?

I DO hope there is still an evidence trail for housegate. My point is that we can’t pin our hopes on possible future stuff when real present stuff is staring us in the face. We grab it ALL, and do EVERYthing we can, no matter how big or small, and we stand tall, stay strong, stay together. We are all far more than the sum of one lousy part of THAT GINO.

Remember AKM’s post about the Republican Lincoln Day at the party last Friday? Well, I went to an advertising seminar at the Hilton Anchorage today. I went because of “duty.” It wasn’t a complete waste of time because…. (!!)…. I remembered the “Where’s Sarah” button AKM said she taped in the women’s restroom. I felt underneath the napkin dispenser, and yup! I got it. So the day wasn’t completely lost. Things like this demonstrates our cyber pals are a real community. What a neat surprise (for me)! The highlight of my day. Someone needs to send a man into the men’s restroom to get the other button…

Too funny that AKM planted them in the Rep. party silent auction items too. I guess she needed some fun. Can you imagine how boring and sickening the party was? With Juneau and their doo-tricks, wonder what lower 48-ers think of us?
