Bedtime in Alaska – Open Thread

Well, I had it all planned out….another round up post to get to all the things I haven’t had time for.  But, frankly, after a day of hundreds of emails, and other interesting local developments, I ran out of steam.  So, instead, you get this brand new shiny open thread to talk about whatever you like, and I’m going to drag myself upstairs to my waiting pillow.

I’ve got a super strong pot of coffee all set to brew tomorrow morning, so I’ll give it another shot then!

    Great work AKM.

I’m copying my orphaned post from Catgate here. Brad DeLong’s blog on the house is a neat summary.

About the windows and railings- I pulled pictures of the railings, printed them at the same scale and they don’t measure out the same, nor is the framing the same material. Ditto the windows. It is not surprising to see materials imported by the same supplier at the same time look similar.

What does seem extremely similar is the architectural design, so I searched for the architect.
Brad DeLong, at U of C Economics Department wrote this blog item last October that sums it all up very well.

    http://delong.typepad.com/egregious_moderation/2008/10/wayne-barrett-s.html

“THE $12.5 MILLION sports complex and hockey rink that is the lasting monument to Palin’s two terms as Wasilla mayor is also a monument to the kind of insider politics that dismays Americans of both parties. Six months before Palin stepped down as mayor in October 2002, the city awarded nearly a half-million-dollar contract to design the biggest project in Wasilla history to Kumin Associates. Blase Burkhart was the Kumin architect on the job—the son of Roy Burkhart, who is frequently described as a “mentor” of Palin and was head of the local Republican Party (his wife, June, who also advised Palin, is the national committeewoman). Asked if the contract was a favor, Roy Burkhart, who contributed to her campaign in the same time frame that his son got the contract, said: “I really don’t know.” Palin then named Blase Burkhart to a seven-member builder-selection committee that picked Howdie Inc., a mostly residential contractor owned at the time by Howard Nugent. Formally awarded the contract a couple of weeks after Palin left office, Nugent has donated $4,000 to Palin campaigns. Two competitors protested the process that led to Nugent’s contract. Burkhart and Nugent had done at least one project together before the complex—and have done several since.

A list of subcontractors on the job, obtained by the Voice, includes many with Palin ties. One was Spenard Builders Supply, the state’s leading supplier of wood, floor, roof, and other “pre-engineered components.” In addition to being a sponsor of Todd Palin’s snow-machine team that has earned tens of thousands for the Palin family, Spenard hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004. When the Palins began building a new family home off Lake Lucille in 2002—at the same time that Palin was running for lieutenant governor and in her final months as mayor—Spenard supplied the materials, according to Antoine Bricks, who works in its Wasilla office. Spenard actually filed a notice “of its right to assert a lien” on the deed for the Palin property after contracting for labor and materials for the site. Spenard’s name has popped up in the trial of Senator Stevens—it worked on the house that is at the center of the VECO scandal as well.

Todd Palin told Fox News that he built the two-story, 3,450-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath, wood house himself, with the help of contractors he described as “buddies.” As mayor, Sarah Palin blocked an effort to require the filing of building permits in the wide-open city, and there is no public record of who the “buddies” were. The house was built very near the complex, on a site whose city purchase led to years of unsuccessful litigation and, now, $1.3 million in additional costs, with a law firm that’s also donated to Palin collecting costly fees from the city.”

Was reading all of the comments on HuffPo re:Catgate, and the name of a poster, ‘formerprosecutor’, kept coming up. He/she really made some dynamite points — forceful, to the point, unequivocal. Here’s the law; there’s a right and there’s a wrong, and SP didn’t exactly fall into the ‘right’ category when as Governor she wore those Arctic Cat custom-made duds.

I even wondered if ‘formerprosecutor’ might be a Mudflatter — ?? hmmm …… are you out there?

I read HuffPo a lot, especially when it features a Mudflats article. And I always remember comments that are especially informative or inspirational. But for some reason this ‘formerprosecutor’ really struck a chord with me, big time. His/her comments reinforced my hunch that Celtic Diva is on to something solid.

    Hi tigerwine!

Can’t remember where I read it (ADN??), but in some story I saw contacts listed for AK DEC, the Coast Guard, and Homeland Security. Also there was a statement somewhere that said the state National Guard was on alert.

But why haven’t we heard a statement from our governor? Here we’ve got a volcano on RED alert status, 6 million gallons of crude sitting there next to an active volcano and Cook Inlet — and we hear …… NOTHING?

Tonight I wrote to President Obama and Secretary Salazar. I also tried to write to Secretary Napolitano (Homeland Security), but finding the right email address off that site was too much for my little brain to do …….

capaharas has the “latest news” on state’s plans for Redoubt. Guess we know who’s important huh? As if we didn’t know already. Arghhhhhh!

“Governor Palin encourages Alaskans to follow ash fall advisory plans

3/23/2009 – Juneau, Alaska — Governor Sarah Palin is encouraging Alaskans potentially effected by the ash fall of Mount Redoubt’ s most recent eruption to follow safety procedures. During the past two months, the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has been working with local governments to make sure communities were prepared for the impending eruption of Mount Redoubt.

“Fortunately Redoubt has been giving us signs that it was bound to blow sometime this spring,” Palin said. “These warning signs gave Alaskans in Southcentral time to protect their belongings, educate their families, and stock up on air filters and other essential protective gear.”

The State of Alaska will continue to monitor the situation at Mount Redoubt and provide the latest information to local and federal government agencies. The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will also work closely with the Alaska Volcano Observatory to keep media outlets informed so the very best information can reach our families. Ash fall and emergency preparedness brochures are available on the state’s website at http://www.ready.alaska.gov.

As a precautionary measure, the Alaska Air National Guard’ s 176th Wing at Kulis Air National Guard Base in Anchorage is sending five C-130 Hercules and two HC-130 aircraft to Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks. The 24/7 alert coverage, most notably used for search and rescue response, will not be affected by the move.

All other operations at Kulis Air National Guard Base will continue to operate as normally scheduled. The Alaska Army National Guard has moved aircraft indoors at Bryant Army Guard Airfield on Fort Richardson and has no plans to send any aircraft elsewhere. “

  26. 26

Not being from Alaska (though really thinking of moving there, just to vote against Palin) I decided to write to Secretary Salazar about the Chevron Oil Tanks. Found what I think is the correct email address on Department of Interior’s website: webteam@ios.doi.gov

    Here’s what I wrote:
    Dear Secretary Salazar,

With concerns of the 6 million gallons of oil holding in the Chevron tanks at Mt. Redoubt growing, I feel that the Federal Government needs to step in and get them to drain the tanks.

The pristine environment of Cook Inlet is at great risk. Did we not learn from the Exxon Valdez disaster from 20 years ago what an oil spill can do to the Alaska coast? That did not stay a State issue, it was a National disaster.

Considering that Governor Palin is taking no action, has not mentioned anything about this do you really want to wait for some action from her? Considering it took her months to acknowledge the food and fuel shortage in the western part of her own state, I think not.

Yes, Mt. Redoubt might not blow again for another 20 years. Yes, the slides might go somewhere else. But, looking at the pictures Chevron gave to the press about the tanks “were successfully protected,” there is no doubt another slide would do their protections in.

Who, on this troubled planet of ours, had the gall to give permits to hold oil at the bottom of an active volcano?

    Let’s safeguard our National resources.

I think the level of concern by Palin about anything can be measured by her reaction. If Actic Diva’s complaint was so trivial why did Palin feel the need to address it on the Governor’s website? A truly trivial complaint would have best been ignored by her.

I think the complaint is completely legitimate and whether or not anyone feels it is any big deal what Palin wears or doesn’t wear to the Iron Man misses the whole point of the complaint which was crystal clear. Palin was advertising a company that has paid her family money. And I can guarantee the Palin knew asboslutely 100% what she was doing. When it comes to personal monetary gain, handouts and freebies I think that is truly the only subject that Palin is a legitimate leading expert in the country.

She has a clear and cnsistent pattern of abusing rules to benefit herself and her family and almost al of them involve money and personal gain for her family.

Palin’s big problem and one that she truly recognizes and despises is that the pesky bloggers thats she hates so much really do have the clout to affect her. She thinks she can trivilize them and pretend they don’t count. But I guarantee she (or her staff) watch these blogs closer than most of us do.

It’s just too bad they don’t pay attention to what people are really saying. Palin is establishing a very, very disturbing pattern of scofflaw behavior that may have worked in the old Ted Stevens heyday, but is a very dangerous and foolish road to take in these days of 24-7 non-stop blogging. There are just too many eyes on her now.

You could argue that the complaint was trivial, before Palin made such a big deal out of it. There must be millions of teenagers in this country who could have ‘wiggled out’ of the the problem quite easily-by admitting that they weren’t thinking, and by offering profuse apologies.

We should keep in mind, that Palin (despite having “studied” journalism) seems to feel that she has constitutional protections against criticism in the press. One can imagine her contempt of criticism by a blogger!

On another note, was watching news in my area, my provincial Premier and a neighboring State Governor were meeting and in my experience with these and their administrations have never heard a peep of adversity from either of them. There is a great spirit of comraderie, and a forge of friendship which opens doors to “progressing” with mutual business efforts. They are planning to build a natural-gas powered station, instead of coal, and wind-generation, which will be a lot cleaner. Like all projects, this could take months, if not years, but…..

Am getting on my second coffee of the day, the brain cells are re-activating, I have another comment on this idea out there that those who react to SP’s unethical behavior are “scared” of her. “OH, they must be really scared of her”….on Fox news, and elsewhere. It’s a common word weapon. As if, her supporters are really glad that we are scared of her. Yes, during the Inquisition, peasants were “scared” of evil cardinals and popes. During the Holocaust, Jews were “scared” of Hitler and his minions. During all wars, innocents were “scared” of evil dictators. Fear is a response to a normal person who feels insecure by the actions of another.

If Sarah supporters, and am directing this to them, feel that fear is a good thing, then why does the Bible say, “Perfect love drives out fear”. If fear is what these bots seem to enjoy watching, then these bots have a real psychological, sadistic, problem. Just saying.

She very well knows a complaint against her by Linda would be a valid complaint, nothing trivial or soft. Palin knows Linda well and is sweatin this one. In the past Palin praised Linda’s ability and desire to hold people accountable and had Linda help her do it to others who had it coming, yep, Palin used Linda to benifit herself in order to get ahead, back in the day.

No, Palin knows she’s up against a true watchdog. BTW, I think I read this is Linda’s first ethic complaint she’s filed against Palin. I’d say 99.9% that it has teeth. Don’t let Palin’s slights and swipes toward Linda mislead anyone.

It does appear that the Diva is getting some nasty comments at Le Bleue Oasis. I don’t think such rhetoric is helpful, but I don’t agree with her decision to ban so many posters just as I don’t agree with team Sarah from attempting to hide their discussions behind closed doors. I do appreciate being able to make my opinion know even if most of you don’t agree with what I have said. Progressive Alaska has an interesting comment on this complaint. It seems to me that she is not very supportive of it. Just had to laugh at that Faux News clip, my favorite network for comedy.
The Diva seems to respond to the nasty comments but does not seem to say much about the more reasonable posters that do not agree with her decision to file this complaint. I still think this complaint will (and has to some extent already) lessen the serious nature of some of the other complaints and also result in more support ($$$) and sympathy going Sarah’s way. I still believe most reasonable people will see this complaint as sour grapes. In my opinion some of the moderate and undecideds on the issue of Sarah’s ethics will be swayed in her direction.

    drChill,
Thanks for the info. She has celebrity status and people want to look like Sarah. Still, I think most people believe she wore that jacket to show support for her husband and his team. I don’t believe it was a calculated attempt to make her family or her husband more money. It may be a technical violation of the ethics rules but it is certainly understandable and to go to the level of filing an ethics complaint over it is beyond the pale. Most people who have taken it seriously are already anti-Palin and those that were unsure will not be swayed by this. The reactions that I have seen show a somewhat lukewarm reception to this even by such sites as this one, and conversely the pro-Palin sites are using this as a springboard to build support. Those like me who have not made a decision as to Palin in the future will be more sympathetic to her spin on these complaints, in my opinion.

It was not a “technical” violation of the ethics rules, it was a clear, full-on violation. You need to learn a little more about the law, especially as regards ethics violations. Not petty, not technical, not an accident by a loving wife. GINO is all about calculating, especially when free stuff is involved. You are just completely barking up the wrong tree and it is clear by the responses from “normal” people (as in NOT those dingbat supporters of hers), that most people clearly see the conflict of interest and her constantly expanding pattern of ethics violations. We get your point, understand it, you don’t need to keep repeating it over and over as though that gives it more weight. It doesn’t. Go talk to some government employees about how much attention they HAVE to pay to ethics and possible conflicts of interest.

I most certainly would have the money equation on my mind if my family benefited from a sponsorship like that.

That being said, if I was governor (and former VP candidate) as well, I would be doubly careful as to how I would associate myself with that company. The conflict of interest potential would be off the charts.

Because they are so good, people have started to think of these as “news sites” because they are better and more informative than almost any and every Alaskan media outlet we have.

But WTF? There is no blogger code of anything – the ethics, techniques, etc used by bloggers are not a CODE of any organization – we are seeing their own beliefs and values echoed in how they run their blogs. They do all follow the requirement to credit quoted articles, links and photos – but aside from that, they do what they do. And each site reflects the personality, passion, integrity and creativity of the blogger. That’s why we go there.

I’m really tired of so many complaining about this or that with the Alaskan bloggers, esp. over Celtic Diva’s brilliant move. And may I ask those people, what have YOU done personally to trip up SP? Have you put your peace of mind, your blogging, professional and personal reputation on the line? Have you the energy to keep up with the work associated with a consistently excellent blog site, including troll patrol? Please stand up and be counted if ANY of the critics of Celtic Diva’s action have done anything CLOSE to what she has done here and what she is risking. For that matter, please stand up if you’ve worked as hard as I HAVE in little ways, every day, for months, to bring this creep to her knees!

Celtic Diva exercised her right as a constituent to hold the maniacal governor accountable – and she didn’t have to ask any of you for permission to do so. Folks are acting like this is a strategic battle, where certain things should happen at certain times in order to win. NOT. That’s of course what the right wingers are stupid enough to think – that it’s all some HUGE orchestrated plot against SP, starting from the top w/ our president.

Why do I think this move was BRILLIANT? Because the timing was absolutely perfect in pushing Sarah Palin, the worst governor to walk the earth, into publishing her little vendetta style snotty response on the STATE website. SP pretended to miss the point, as she always does, and try the attack mode, which she always does. SP in incensed about this for PRECISELY the reason that so many of you think it’s not important, because it’s little, it’s niggly, but it is 100 percent right on the mark and there is no wiggling out of it. She may get no real censure, but she also will NOT be able to pull this ever again, anywhere. SP’s wardrobe and looks are overly important to her, so this hits her where it hurts the most. It also completely rankles her because she won’t be able to do just as she pleases, and that is paramount to taking her down a notch at a time.

It’s precisely this ability to push SP’s buttons because of her personality disorder and vendetta addiction that will help push her over the edge. She can not help herself – and if she shows any restraint, it’s very temporary because she’s always angry about it and just can’t rest til she gets her digs in. This exposes her to the core, and will continue to be an effective way to “peck the governor’s ankles” til she walks right over the cliff.

I don’t care that everyone is waiting for the BIG ONE to bring her down in flames, you can wish what you want. But since I’m in Alaska, living in the same town as the Governor and the circus she has created with this Legislative session, I don’t care HOW she flames out, just that she flames out. If it takes two years, it takes two years. But she will go down – she just doesn’t have what it takes to go national without being ripped to shreds using her own dysfunctional ambitions to do it.

I began to feel as though many posters here sounded as whiny and hand wringing as the right wing blogs that I’ve visited. Be pissed at me if you want, but crying chicken little never got anyone what they wanted – nor does blaming Alaskans, or telling everyone “BE AFRAID” and all the nonsense posted along those lines. Use your brains, your creativity, and your GUTS like Celtic Diva di and pick up the ball and run with it instead of whining. We all know that’s what SP should do, but she can’t. Mudpuppies can, yes they can, but they have to WANT to do it.

Yeah, what a load of poo. If somebody still can’t figure out what GINO is by this time and is waiting for “her spin” on her latest ethical idiocy, then maybe this person needs to go hang with a different crowd. You are not attempting reasonable discussion, nor are you giving polite due to other opinions as was given to yours the first half dozen times. Pot stirring by somebody still waiting to be convinced about something. I amend my request for you to go do some homework before spouting negative ignorance to just go. But that’s just me, and this is not my blog.

You hit Rougemont pretty hard there. Yesterday it was Liz P., I believe – along with a little shot at me in there too.
With the shouting capitals, I think you are missing the purpose of this blog.
If we all agree, we will all be bored and learn nothing. The purpose is to share our thoughts. Your recent comments make me feel as if my thoughts should not be expressed here, in your opinion.
I am not a troll, not a Sarah supporter, and I don’t think Sarah should have worn that jacket. I have enjoyed reading Diva’s blog for a long time and generally agree with her thoughts on things, though not on filing this ethics complaint.
However, I also don’t think I or anyone else has to prove their Mudflat creds to you in order to post here. And I particularly don’t think there is a place for calling people ‘whiny’ because they have a different viewpoint than you do on this issue.

I have infiltrated “Team Scarah”…oh my…… it is a fun read. They are telling everyone to get over to AOL to participate in the poll. And the best part is……someone is suggesting that Queen Palin’s campaign slogan for her 2012 Presidential run should be “SARAH, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.”……………………………….

or how about “Sarah, Plain and Stupid” ??

    @Rougemont (09:36:16) :
    ========
!!! The fact that she wore it to support the team has absolutely nothing to do with it !!!!

The point is — she is so incredibly ethically bankrupt, she doesn’t even THINK about the possibility of impropriety. Ethics handbooks always warn about about “the appearance of a conflict of interest” …… even the appearance of it can be a violation. She doesn’t have the sensitivity, curiosity or intelligence to recognize what a conflict of interests would be.

So she continues to barge through those doors, take the money as she goes, and do what she wants until someone stops her.

me not mad at Martha U either. Rob of Ca. I am sorry I thought Liz P. was rude also, you not so much. But the other one went straight to defensive and so rudely was telling AKM and Gryphen what to consider as a cliff hanger. That was my problem with that poster. We can always agree to disagree but we do not have to start being rude telling the host what to do with their blog.
