The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Oyster Roundup? You Tell Me.

OK, help me.  It’s been the “Bedtime in Alaska” thread, it’s been “Odds & Ends”, it’s been “Daily Roundup”, it’s been the “Catch Up Thread”…. And now I’m considering the “Oyster Roundup”, because of this section of  the poem”The Walrus and the Carpenter” by Lewis Carroll:

Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more–
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.

oysters

I picture those nuggets of news hopping through the frothy waves, and landing right on the mudflats. That’s about as good a poetic analogy to the never-ending developments in Alaska politics as I could come up with. Is there a better one?  I’m open to suggestions.  But for today, it’s the Oyster Roundup. And in keeping with the Lewis Carroll theme:

“Mind the Volcano!”

Looks like Mt. Redoubt didn’t much like getting scaled back to “code orange” yesterday.  Our magma-filled friend has erupted two more times this morning.  My drive in to work today gave beautiful views of Mt. Susitna (aka Sleeping Lady) to the north, bathed in pink morning light, and to the South….it was looking kind of like Mordor.  Dark blueish-black sky, choked with ash and clouds.  Then I read the paper and found out why!  There were two more eruptions this morning, and it looks like Homer may be the recipient of today’s ash fall.

Early reports say the latest eruption sent an ash cloud to at least 30,000 feet above sea level but that it contained less ash than earlier large explosions.

“This event is bigger than the ones from yesterday but smaller than the ones from Sunday and Monday,” said Dave Schneider of the AVO.

Winds were likely to carry the ash southeast over Cook Inlet, away from Anchorage, he said.

Eye on the Tanks

Thanks to all who gave such nice feedback on my article on the Huffington Post yesterday.  For those of you who want the latest updates from Chevron regarding the status of the tank farm sitting at the base of Mt. Redoubt, and whether the current episodes of volcanic activity have impacted the tanks, you can keep tabs HERE.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the most current information.

If anyone knows of a statement from the Governor of Alaska on this situation, do let me know.  But, so far, I can’t find one.  Please remember that she HAS recently released a press release slamming an ethics complaint, and another one slamming the president for a remark he made on Jay Leno.  That must mean her focus isn’t on those 6 million gallons of oil that could end up in Cook Inlet.  It’s on:

[As always, it's a joy to have a drive-by from flyinureye!  Hat tip for the graphic graphic!]

It is Found!

wheres-sarah1

I have received an email confirming that one of the three Where’s Sarah? buttons was retrieved by an Anchorage Mudflatter Yvonne!  Here’s the email she sent to her political friends:

I dutifully went to a boring two hour meeting on advertising the other day at the Hilton.  I had a feeling it was going to be boring, but remembered that I had another mission there that would be FUN!  = To check under the sanitary napkin dispenser in the women’s restroom, where AK Muckracker said she taped a “Where’s Sarah?” button.  Sure enuf, I found it—- Makes cyber world come to life and a nice little adventure for me.

If you didn’t read her post about the Republican Lincoln Day Dinnershe attended— this is a great read.  And we know all of the characters!  Now we can see how they behave at their groupie gatherings courtesy of AKMuckracker who was brave enough to attend.

And remember, you can purchase your very own Where’s Sarah? button in three sizes and two styles, or Where’s Sarah? stickers at the Mudflats Shop, and support your humble Alaska blogger at the same time!

Knock, Knock!  Who’s There?

The answer so far is Walt Monegan!  Alaskans for Truth has sent out a list of questions to all Anchorage mayoral candidates.  The only one to respond so far is Walt Monegan.  You can see how he responded to the ten questions HERE.

Each of us can get caught up in the challenges of our immediate lives and our attention to our surroundings can drop off. When that happens, there are those who will take advantage of that situation believing that personal gains can be made when no one is either watching or cares. The cure is that we must remain vigilant and hold all those in public trust accountable. If we decide to continue to remain uninvolved, then we must keep our FBI busy and our expectations low.

You can read Walt’s responses to questions on the economy, integrity, corruption in Alaska government, and find out what public figure he admires.  You might be surprised!

Juneau Protests Palin

palin-protest

Protesters in Juneau line the steps of the capitol building protesting Palin’s rejection of stimulus money for education and the arts.

“I’m going to do what’s best for Alaska,” Palin said. “We just want to make sure that everybody has all the information regarding this opportunity, because with opportunity comes obligation. I think the fairest route to Alaskans is not to get their expectations up.” [photo and quote from Capital City Weekly]

I’ve been to a lot of Palin protests, but this one on the steps of the Capitol building is the first time I remember Palin being present at one.  Way to go Juneau for stepping out there and speaking for all Alaskans who couldn’t be in the capital city.

Another oyster? Another pearl? Alaska’s Guv is once again working to overturn the will of the voters in Alaska and thumb her nose at the importance of clean water and healthy food by endorsing the cruise ship industry’s request to “not enforce” water quality discharge standards into Alaska’s Inside Passage and other ocean waters. HB134 also moving in this direction.

The most egregious aspect would be to endorse the ocean as a “mixing zone” where water quality tests would then be taken, rather than at the end of the pipe from which the toxic waste from cruise ships is discharged.

Reposted from end of last thread due to more whininess over Celtic Diva’s complaint:

Be prepared to be mad at me for this, but it needs to be said!

This is one of the reasons I left here for awhile – Celtic Diva pulled a BRILLIANT move. Like one of those little sleeper movies you see and end up loving because of its quirky or unusual commentary and impact on you. You wonder why it didn’t become popular? How could people of have missed this little gem of a movie? How did you even stumble on it, by accident (usually)?

That’s what we have here w/ Celtic Diva. Some posters are confusing her blog w/ Team Sarah site – are you nuts? Celtic Diva is not a political action committee group – she’s a blogger and can do whatever she damn well pleases on her site and delete whoever she wants. Just like AKM does. She’s a BLOGGER. In Alaska, we are incredibly fortunate to have several AMAZING INTELLIGENT and INVESTIGATIVE bloggers. Because they are so good, people have started to think of these as “news sites” because they are better and more informative than almost any and every Alaskan media outlet we have.

But WTF? There is no blogger code of anything – the ethics, techniques, etc used by bloggers are not a CODE of any organization – we are seeing their own beliefs and values echoed in how they run their blogs. They do all follow the requirement to credit quoted articles, links and photos – but aside from that, they do what they do. And each site reflects the personality, passion, integrity and creativity of the blogger. That’s why we go there.

I’m really tired of so many complaining about this or that with the Alaskan bloggers, esp. over Celtic Diva’s brilliant move. And may I ask those people, what have YOU done personally to trip up SP? Have you put your peace of mind, your blogging, professional and personal reputation on the line? Have you the energy to keep up with the work associated with a consistently excellent blog site, including troll patrol? Please stand up and be counted if ANY of the critics of Celtic Diva’s action have done anything CLOSE to what she has done here and what she is risking. For that matter, please stand up if you’ve worked as hard as I HAVE in little ways, every day, for months, to bring this creep to her knees!

Celtic Diva exercised her right as a constituent to hold the maniacal governor accountable – and she didn’t have to ask any of you for permission to do so. Folks are acting like this is a strategic battle, where certain things should happen at certain times in order to win. NOT. That’s of course what the right wingers are stupid enough to think – that it’s all some HUGE orchestrated plot against SP, starting from the top w/ our president.

Why do I think this move was BRILLIANT? Because the timing was absolutely perfect in pushing Sarah Palin, the worst governor to walk the earth, into publishing her little vendetta style snotty response on the STATE website. SP pretended to miss the point, as she always does, and try the attack mode, which she always does. SP in incensed about this for PRECISELY the reason that so many of you think it’s not important, because it’s little, it’s niggly, but it is 100 percent right on the mark and there is no wiggling out of it. She may get no real censure, but she also will NOT be able to pull this ever again, anywhere. SP’s wardrobe and looks are overly important to her, so this hits her where it hurts the most. It also completely rankles her because she won’t be able to do just as she pleases, and that is paramount to taking her down a notch at a time.

It’s precisely this ability to push SP’s buttons because of her personality disorder and vendetta addiction that will help push her over the edge. She can not help herself – and if she shows any restraint, it’s very temporary because she’s always angry about it and just can’t rest til she gets her digs in. This exposes her to the core, and will continue to be an effective way to “peck the governor’s ankles” til she walks right over the cliff.

I don’t care that everyone is waiting for the BIG ONE to bring her down in flames, you can wish what you want. But since I’m in Alaska, living in the same town as the Governor and the circus she has created with this Legislative session, I don’t care HOW she flames out, just that she flames out. If it takes two years, it takes two years. But she will go down – she just doesn’t have what it takes to go national without being ripped to shreds using her own dysfunctional ambitions to do it.

I began to feel as though many posters here sounded as whiny and hand wringing as the right wing blogs that I’ve visited. Be pissed at me if you want, but crying chicken little never got anyone what they wanted – nor does blaming Alaskans, or telling everyone “BE AFRAID” and all the nonsense posted along those lines. Use your brains, your creativity, and your GUTS like Celtic Diva di and pick up the ball and run with it instead of whining. We all know that’s what SP should do, but she can’t. Mudpuppies can, yes they can, but they have to WANT to do it.

In my rant I forgot to add one more thing… again, one of the most important and clever of all coming from Celtic Diva’s complaint:

Snicker. Snickers. Snickering. Behind her back, mostly, but snickering expressions will show up on people’s faces in front of her, also, too.

Why do you think she’s incensed with bloggers? Snickering.

Why did she come unglued at the RNC clothing fiasco? Snickering.

Why did she last out at Tina Fey & Katie Couric? Snickering.

Now, tell me – has ANYONE forgotten any of the above items which she whined about? Each time, her whining made the situation much worse, and even more importantly – INDELIBLY PLANTED IN EVERYONE’S THOUGHTS. Even her supporters – which start bubble feeding trying to defend her over those petty things – can’t forget those. NO ONE WILL EVER FORGET THOSE.

Now, KO already snickered. The MSM won’t take this seriously but they WILL report it because the complaint itself is news. So what are they going to do? Snicker.

SP is a narcissist who normally ignores, tunes out, doesn’t care – whatever, about what people say about her because she thinks she’s right. She attacks her opponents consistently by undermining their reputation in small but biting ways, twisting facts and making fun of them. She knows how effective this is, which is why she does it. She can’t ignore the snickers. She’s getting a taste of exactly what she has built her career on doing herself, except that hers went beyond snarky and became dangerous (pallin’ around with terrorists) during the election.

Why is this important to know for mudpuppies who’ve been whiny about Celtic Diva’s complaint? Because humor is just as powerful as anger, probably more so. And don’t forget it. Don’t take yourselves too seriously, or the rest of us for that matter. Lighten up!

I hope we don’t all have to agree here. I had quite a few interesting interchanges yesterday after expressing my opinion of the ethics complaint – which was and is that this should not have been a formal complaint, but rather could have been raised publicly as an issue. I share an opinion with a number of other contributors, that this may in fact serve to shore up support for Sarah because the complaint comes across as frivolous.
I am not in the least bothered that a number of you have either disagreed directly, or at least said you agree somewhat but still hope this will pan out. And certainly, I could not argue with Irishgirl who pointed out to me that this complaint really got to Sarah. I could not help but agree that was a good thing.
But I don’t think we need to have several rants here against some of us who feel that way, nor do I think it is appropriate to call us ‘whiny’. Let’s argue the issues. Let’s not be challenging other contributors as to whether they have fought hard enough against Sarah to be allowed to post here. That seems a little ‘unmudflatty’ or something…

I agree that after Palin’s over-reaction, there’s no ‘wiggling out of it’. Celtic Diva’s brilliance was to prod Palin into reacting like a self-centered spoiled brat.

    Well done Celtic Diva.

Sadly, Chevron has decided that their profits are more important than environmental safety. They state their goal for the Cook Inlet storage facility on their website: “Our goal is to safely resume operations as quickly as possible. ” There is NO MENTION OF EMPTYING THE TANKS. They even say that keeping the oil flowing is best for the people of southeastern Alaska. (They took it upon themselves to makes this assumption; they did NOT ask the people, themselves, what was best for them.) Alas, greed and evil still rule corporate America.

The word frivolous is being misused by the people who don’t think the complaint should have been filed. You need to go do some law homework about what an actual frivolous complaint is. Filing a complaint against an obvious ethics violation (talk all you want, but if you talk to lawyers and government workers, virtually all of them will agree on this point) is not “frivolous” in a legal sense. The complaint is legally valid, whether the GINO personnel board treats it that way or not. I’m serious. Go look up some REAL examples of frivolous lawsuits and complaints and stop misusing the word. GINO is using the word in a legal sense in her stupid press release, and she is completely wrong.
And yes, I HAVE talked to lawyers and government workers about this, and they all agree that this is a valid ethics complaint that does not fit the definition of frivolous. Now leave my little sister alone.

Okay, one last thing. If an ethics complaint, against a public official charged with upholding the laws of her state, is legally valid, according to the laws of her state, how can you call it petty? I just find THAT incredibly petty and nitpicky. You really CAN’T have it both ways. Petty is what GINO does every time she opens her maw. Petty is NOT a legal complaint about a violation of ethics that is IN the code of ethics for the state of Alaska AND is required reading for ALL state employees. On the comment about petty, 3 points:
1)as somebody just pointed out AGAIN, the complaint involves personal benefit to GINO’s family, to the tune of unknown thousands of dollars.
2)you seem to think there is a sliding scale of ethics, in which some are just a little bit unethical and others are very unethical. Unethical is unethical. No sliding scale. Either you are ethical or you are not. As somebody also pointed out earlier, we need to look at our own ethics, our own lives, and if we see lack of integrity in our own lives, we really need to do something about that and not let it be a PATTERN of our entire life the way GINO does.
3)Actually part of point 2, but have we become so jaded by dishonesty and lack of integrity in our public officials that we just shrug when they are blatantly unethical, because, really, it’s just a LITTLE thing? God, I sure hope not, or we’ve already lost the battle and may as well hang up our rubber boots.

I am wondering if GINO’s use of the state website and her speeches at as governor are bordering on some type of harrassment or attempt to intimidate anyone who has or wants to file an ethics complaint? Ridiculing concerned citizens in public and calling them names, even if she does not personally name each one, sure seems like an attempt to deter concerned citizens from filing in the future,as well as taint the opinion of those who will be deciding on the complaints already filed.

I don’t think (I could be wrong!) that Sarah was paid with direct intent of getting that advertising. I think it was thoughtless and inappropriate on her part to wear that jacket. Legal? I agree, it was not legally correct. I have seen no evidence presented, however, that Arctic Cat supplied cash or discounts for anything other than the sponsorship of the team.
Now, what is the punishment? Well, there is where the ‘petty’ word comes in for me, because I don’t see this as being anything more than a hand slap, unless there is information we do not have, such as an explicit agreement for cash or other benefits if Sarah wore that jacket at the event.
I think she will be told not to do it again, and that will be the end of it. I hope I am wrong!
(But let me say again that Sarah’s overreaction has put this in a different category, and while I still don’t believe there will be any significant response from the Personnel Board, Sarah’s response did her a lot of damage. Rob in Ca,
You may consider the complaint petty, but it still lies therein that it is against ethics rules under the job of the Governor within the State of Alaska. Your State may well have totally different ethics rules. So, whether you see it petty or not, it falls under the category of violation of ethics which an elected official is bound by.

With Palin it is an ongoing issue of her pushing the envelope to see how much she can get away with for her own personal benefit and therefore individuals who have filed complaints are standing up to hold her accountable within the confines of the ethics regulations within Alaska.

Remember the old saying “Give them an inch and they take a mile”. Well, Alaskans are holding her to that inch which they should do.

Just think, if AIG had regulations to hold them to that inch, we wouldn’t be where we are now at that mile marker.

MY original complaint was not ag ainst Linda’s complaint but against MF and IM blogs setting us up for a big surprise and ending up with something that likely will not LEGALLY amount to much. NO ONE WILL BE HAPPIER THAN ME IF IT DOES.

Again, I just dont want respected bloggers making me think a really big surprise is coming only to be let down. I dont want the emotional roller coaster to be worse than it has to be.

I know both bloggers ! and they know me! When I see them next, I will say the same to their faces and we will laugh over it.

Now, enough attacking posters who don’t agree with you Martha. and calling people names ” whiney”, “not doing anythinig”, “fearful just shows childishness on your part.

Absolutely positively so!! I remember during the Campaign loving Tina Fey and John Stewart and Dave Letterman for their humorous taking down of Palin and McCain. They were my heroes because they accomplished with humor so much more than the MSM in pointing out the stupidity of the McCain/Palin ticket. No wonder that the younger generation is now turing to the likes of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as some of their primary sources of news instead of the corporate owned afraid to step on anyone’s toes MSM.

Hmmm… wonder if we could get Jon to do one of his pieces on “Sarah VS. The Volcano” THAT would surely get some national attention going…

I would also suggest that when a poster continues to push a viewpoint that is creating friction and dissension that that poster’s motives be questioned. Trolls aren’t always obvious… some of them actually do try to hide the poison in the carmel apple. Just sayin. (This is not aimed at Martha)

I did not expect that, and am pleasantly surprised that she was so easily goaded into making a fool of herself.)
Ok..think it’s time for me to have a beer, too…
    =======================================
Rob, you now have another Martha “up your nose”! (I mean that in the kindest way possible) Here are some of the posts I’ve made attempting to get my ethics point across. MarthaUnalaska Yard Sign ( or any other knowledgeable poster here) may correct me if I’m wrong.

    Todd made a side trip during the campaign to Arctic Cat HQ, to give a speech there. Apparently BOTH he and Sarah quote “give inspirational speeches at trade shows. They are both adored and reviled. They are the New York Yankees of snow machining” Obviously the Palins involvement with Arctic Cat runs deep. Palin has 4 ethics problems here;

1: Palin is helping her family benefit by wearing the “custom, made to fit snowmachine suit, (the entire Palin family and Todds partners family were given monogrammed , custom made suits to wear , obviously as a part of the sponsorship!) Palin did just wear any old Arctic Cat jacket, it was part of the sponsorship deal.

2:Palin was helping Todds partner benefit, supporting the sponsorship, by wearing the outfit.

3:Palin was providing , a yet to be determined $ of advertising for Arctic Cat, that is already apparent in the Sports Illustrated magazine article.

4:Palin allowed Todd to have SARAH THE GOV, on the hood of his Arctic Cat snowmachine. While he had the names of his 5 kids, he did not just have “SARAH”S’ name, he has SARAH THE GOV. That is having the Governors office DIRECTLY involved with this sponsorship endeavor.

Finally, why don’t you look up your own states ethics laws, Alaska’s are probably much more lenient than your own.

Can you IMAGINE this scenario with Gov Crist of Florida, if his wife were a NASCAR racer. She has a sponsor that provides her and her partner with ALL expenses. She has Gov Crists name , Crist the GOV on the hood of her car, him wearing a NASCAR outfit with their sponsors logo all over it (last year he wore a suit) AND keep in mind Crist would be there officiating in his capacity as Gov?

There would be public outrage against Crist in a heartbeat! NOW DO YOU GET “IT”?!

See article on the Palins in Sports Illustrated:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/the_bonus/03/10/palin/1.html
    Excerpt;
Some Iron Doggers have spent upwards of $30,000 to finance a once-in-a-lifetime run into the wild heart of Alaska. Tapping their credit cards, they’ve shelled out $10,000 each for a 2009 snow machine, $10,000 more for an identical training sled, $2,500 for the race entry fee and a few thousand more for trailing airplane support. Palin and Davis, in contrast, have spent almost nothing. They are prodigiously sponsored, with their names monogrammed in script on their matching Arctic Cat jackets. (Palin even has the names of his five kids and his wife, SARAH, THE GOV, appliqu?d on his snow machine hood.) They give inspirational speeches at trade shows. They are both adored and reviled. They are the New York Yankees of snow machining ============================================== Palin even has the names of his five kids and his wife, SARAH, THE GOV, appliqu?d on his snow machine hood. I think SARAH THE GOV machine+wearing custom made Arctic Cat outfits while fulfilling her duties as Gov +the money involved as laid out in Sports Illustrated = recall for Palin. Just look at the money involved!
=================================================Palin was attending and officiating the race in her capacity as governor (as the governor has done every year) NOT attending as a family member. The ethics laws have to do with Palins family or any business, or company etc. not benefiting from her role as governor. Just like every state in the US. Todd even had SARAH THE GOV written on his machine! OBVIOUSLY the Palin family was paid for this in the sponsorship itself, just look at the cost of the snowmachines themselves that were provided for Todd Palin. Then there is the advertising Palin provided for Arctic Cat by wearing her custom made outfit, while filling out HER DUTY AS GOVERNOR

Ridiculing concerned citizens in public and calling them names, even if she does not personally name each one, sure seems like an attempt to deter concerned citizens from filing in the future,as well as taint the opinion of those who will be deciding on the complaints already filed.

The discussions about whether Celtic Diva’s complaint is “frivolous” etc. completely misses the point and completely fails to see the big picture.

It is not the merits of the complaint or even its ultimate outcome that will be remembered because of this complaint, but rather Palin’s response to it. Notice how many people are rightly pointing out the inappropriateness of Palin using an official state web page to attack a constituent. Notice, also, how many negative adjectives are being used to characterize Palin’s response.

Goading Palin, as someone else aptly noted, into giving her the opportunity to show off her unprofessionalism (and all of the other negative comments that Palin’s response to the complaint got over and over) shows the unbelievable brilliance of Celtic Diva’s very simple, straight-forward, just-the-facts complaint.

BRAVO to Celtic Diva. You played your hand masterfully. You saw Palin being her (obvious) unethical self again, and called her on it. You gave her just enough rope with that complaint to let her embarrass herself again and confirm to all that she should not be in charge of anything.

It did get a bit “warm” in here this afternoon –

Altho the “walking billboard” ethics complaint may be “minor” – it is a valid conflict of interest and thereby GINO deserves to get her hand slapped. However, as she has previously stated – I will do what I want until a judge tells me to stop. (or words to that effect) Someone (be it a judge / personal committee / legislature…) needs to tell her to quit stepping over the line or there WILL BE CONSEQUENCES. Obviously, with 10 complaints already filed against her – emails still not released – up to 4-5 ethics violations still “to be determined” a stand must be made by the State of Alaska.

A recent example which happened in my state, reported just in the last week or two. Was a dinner/lunch was held by a company for our state legislatures, there was some type of legislation that was coming up regarding a product this company sells. Those that attended – stated the product was not even discussed – however ppl that came to testify against that product felt “the legislature already made up its mind” Altho nothing illegal MAY have happened at the dinner/lunch….. there was a “conflict of interest” APPEARANCE.

The cumulative effect of many smaller complaints is substantial and serve to illuminate that she is unethical on multi-tiered levels. A broad spectrum of unethical conduct. Countless incidents of ignoring the needs and best interests of her State. Keep slapping that wrist! She will be thereby be disabled.

Those who dare call the charge frivolous are not the judge presiding over the case and are unfamiliar with which facts are being presented as evidence. The prosecutor chats with the judge and They decide if the charges are warranted. All these charges start adding up, with each prosecution, with each verdict charged as guilty.

To chop a tree whose roots are deep and trunk thick, it takes more than a few whacks of the axe to fell it. Chip by chip it will fall, eventually.

Some think that such a small sum of grift is nothing. Check your moral compass, because it’s off. It’s the little things that eventually lead to larger and bigger things. Is this what you want from your elected official? Why would you think that’s ok? Because it isn’t with me.

I don’t want to hear how it’s different in Alaska. You still squat to take a shit and it doesn’t taste like ice cream either.

Too bad the Governor ignores what an ethical violation is. I wouldn’t trust her ‘judgement’ on more serious issues, also.

Blaming others for ones own mistakes is pretty much transparent. I recommend more lawsuits for each and every grift and/or theft of public money the Governor assumes is hers.

Say, did she pay some Canadian gas company 500 million dollars? A real negotiator that one.

Hey, who has a glass railing in their house that belong in a Wasilla hockey rink? Odd, isn’t it. I’ll say.

Who strikes off requirements of building permits other than for the purpose of stealing from taxpayers? If this was Greece, the townfolk would march on that house by the lake and burn it to the ground.

I sense these lawsuits are small potatoes for what’s coming the Governors way. Good idea to bankrupt the Governor’s family, the same way she’s bankrupted the people of Alaska. She’s already morally bankrupt, now hit them in the wallet till she gets frog marched to prison on something large where evidence is easier to nail down.
