Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

GOP is Over Sarah Palin and is Dating a New Guy.

lucy

I posted a while back about the strange and devolving relationship between Sarah Palin and the GOP when it comes to “making dates”.  Here’s a quick recap.

First Palin says she can’t speak at the GOP winter retreat because she’s got homework in Alaska, and then shows up that same night at the Alfalfa Club Dinner across town in D.C.  Then she commits to speak at the CPAC convention, confirms and then cancels.  Now, she’s all set to deliver the keynote address on June 8 at the Republican Senate-House dinner, it gets announced to the press, and published in all the papers and blogs, and over the airwaves, and then.  Ohhhhhh!   Lucy pulls the football! Again.

Palin remained non-committal about her appearance at the Senate-House Dinner, and poor Charlie Brown was just kind of sitting on the bench, looking all dejected like he does and saying to no one in particular, “Why doesn’t she like me?  Why does this always seem to happen to me?”

Well, it appears as if Charlie Brown has now picked himself up, dusted himself off, and is ready to play with someone else.   Noooo, not Linus.  Noooooo, not Peppermint Patty, and not the Little Red Haired Girl.  It’s… Newt Gingrich?

Here is the official announcement written, undoubtedly, with white knuckles and gritted teeth.

“After initially confirming her attendance, Governor Palin’s team informed the Committees that her gubernatorial responsibilities in Alaska prevented her from committing until the end of the legislative session. We completely understand and respect Governor Palin’s focus on her official state business; however, there is obviously an enormous amount of planning that goes into this annual event. For that reason, we invited and are honored to have former Speaker Newt Gingrich join us as our speaker at the 2009 Senate-House Dinner. As one of our Party’s brightest minds and most energetic speakers, we are looking forward to having former Speaker Gingrich provide the keynote address on June 8.”

The wording is interesting because of course Palin said she never confirmed her attendance at the dinner in the first place.  But the GOP  (sound of grinding teeth) wants to to know that THEY were not the ones that made the embarrassing gaffe.  I don’t know what the next date is going to be, but they may possibly require a confirmation written in blood.

I wonder how Newt Gingrich feels about being Charlie Brown’s rebound guy?

Newt will not run in 2012 (or ever) and this gives them a newtral speaker (puke) so they can tout Sarah, or Bobby, or one of the other Ratketeers who is flavor of the ADDHDday. Whoever the plaque building up on their little ultra-conservative neurons allows them to recognize that evening, to be sure.

Why would the GOP ever again ask her to speak at anything? She has treated them with total dis-respect, which of course she does to everyone, but, I can’t imagine they want to be broad-sided again.

I keep wondering what is going through her mind? She has the PACs all set up to raise money for her yet she keeps treating the GOP like so much trash. Who does she think is going to want her on their ticket after all this? Maybe she is going to form another 3rd party? She is just plain looney!

Good article the other day on Mitt Romney, who is carefully (and smartly) positioning himself for another presidential run.

Here is what I always tell my Republican friends. The problem for Sarah Palin isn’t Democrats. It’s Palin herself. Does anybody seriously think when the race gets into full swing, any of the GOP hopefuls is going to cut her any slack? If she does decide to run, she has got to do so on her own merits, because in a multi-candidate GOP debate she will look like the class clown. No moderator is going to let her response to a question evolve into word salad when there are five or six or ten other people on the stage.

OK, I’m not sure, but I think Newt can speak in complete sentences. She isn’t going to run in 2012 because like the Hindenberg, she’s going to blow up before then. And the people of Iowa and NH will totally be able to see through her BS. The Iowans take their responsiblities pretty seriously. NH has people who would rather “live free or die”–thems some serious words there and don’t think they are going to let Control-Freak Sarah push them around. My guess is that they will all realize that she’s like Fred Thompson in this last election. And he was supposed to be the GOP’s savior.

This little report is an example of the quality of your work and commentary, keep it up please. If nothing else it documents the hijinks of these posers.

What is wanting in all this it appears to me, is a will on the part of the vox populi to assert their dominion. For the moment, the moneyed and priviledged have an advantage, and they exploit it ruthlessly. Ultimately the populace will have to be just as ruthless.

The “wealth” right wing ideologs speak of is nothing more than the result of the labor of the many, concentrated for the benefit of the few. The myth is beginning to unravel. Your voice in this wilderness of propaganda and out right lies, is a shining light. You can bet that there will be repurcussions. The article on Palin being ‘disinvited’ to the June fundraiser is, I think, important. Like, really important.

We already knew, of course, that she had clearly signaled that she would not attend. And we knew that there had been a kerfuffle of sorts, a communication problem, a stapleoops if you will, that had occurred between SarahPac and SarahAk.

I think it is more than that. A lot more than that.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/31/gingrich-replacing-palin_n_181469.html

Sarah has lost her compass. Her inner direction that used to tell her how to navigate these difficult icy waters.

When we first got to know her, Sarah was a savvy politician with immense charm, that sexy Sunday school teacher appeal, and that strong-jawed hockey mom certitude. We doubted her knowledge, but not her spunk.

Now she knows that WE know! It’s all coming apart. She doesn’t know who to trust. Bill and Meg are all she has left! She is surrounded by reminders of her failure to lead, and failure to select competent capable people and advisors. John Ziegler used her. Greta and John used her. McCain used her. Even Arctic Cat used her. She is frozen now, afraid to make a decision because she has always decided based on her ambition, not her fundamental belief system. Without a compass, she is adrift, rudderless, bitter. It’s sad, really. But I don’t think she really comes back from this as a politician. As a commentator, sure. As a party theorist…never could be and never will be. Andrew Halcro said it best: ‘Alaska’s ship of state captain has gone below deck…and the state is on auto pilot.’

They gave her their speechwriters, their assistants…now she is NOT doing her duty and recognizing that she owes them a debt. I imagine they are pretty finished with her right about now.

It must really suck to be her these days with her conflicting camps sending separate messages to the big wigs (Whigs?) and then to have to deal with the bothersome issues being the gov of AK. Gosh, we should all just leave the queen alone to rule her kingdom as she sees fit!

I have to say I really can’t stand Newt Gingrich – he is one of the people you see on Fox News a lot. Of course that makes him popular with the Republicans, but unfortunately it turns off anyone who might be centre or a swing voter and hates the blind partiality (they call it “fair and balanced” but it really is partisan and you can see this even more clearly now Obama is President) Fox.

I would really hope that the “new stars” of the Republican party can be people who steer well clear of Fox News. Of course given that is what the majority of Republicans watch, that probably won’t be the case.

Sarah did win the Governor’s race here. She did it with a combination of a reputation as fighter of corruption and general likeability/alaskan-ness.

She sounded like her normal word salad self during the campaign. The people that voted for her didn’t listen to the debates – they didn’t care about issues, they wanted the symbol of what Sarah had become to Alaskans: a break from the good old boys and their rethuglican politics. Finally, a conservative R that valued the same things that they did – no matter that she couldn’t articulate it.

After one of the debates SP and Andrew had this conversation:

“Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies, and I’m amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, ‘Does any of this really matter?’ ” Palin said. http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/1001/p09s01-coop.html

When she debated Biden she got raves from her base, remember? They thought she was a genius.

It’s a sad day when an electorate votes HUGELY for someone who doesn’t value facts, figures and policies. I don’t think we can let ourselves underestimate Sarah. She’s pissing off the Republican base so that she can gather up splinter Repugs and the dregs of conservatives and D’s from the entire electorate and make it an us vs. them proposition. “See those terrible traditional Repubs like Newt and Dems like that Barack man – see how mean they are to me – only I care about you – WHINE.”

Although it would be lovely to think she will implode before then, I don’t think we should dismiss her as a threat.

    Just saying.

Well good golly, I wonder how Princess Palin feels? Those who have been thrown under her Big Bus can feel a small little smile creeping onto their faces. Karma is a wonderful thing..it just has taken some time. This is just the beginning of her steep, slippery slide down to being a NOBODY. Her book deal will be worthless and she can spend the rest of her life being able to go nowhere in anonymity. People will snicker and sneer on airplanes when they see her, on her vacations people will stare and laugh. What she used to love she will grow to hate. And those she has damaged or hurt will go on with their lives knowing they can go to heaven with a clean heart. The Princess will know another fate. Since the election, Gov. Palin has cloistered herself from any real scrutiny from anyone who is not a drooling fangirl or fanboy. I’m not asking her to go a couple of rounds with Christopher Hitchens but maybe she could attempt to speak to her vision for the country to warrant setting herself up for a presidential run in 2012.

Her continued reluctance to do anything that is outside of her comfort zone of sickly fawning worship makes me hope that she will wake up from this fantasy of being anointed Queen of America and continue playing the Boss Hogg role in Alaskan politics.

I think GINO is quickly realizing that governance (and the prickly spotlight that comes with that) is the most difficult route to the lifestyle that she wants to attain.

My prediction is that she is going to ride out the rest of her GUV role in relative obscurity, doing a minimal job running the state and trying to score lower 48 gigs when it won’t net her too much negative publicity here.

Then she will step out of politics and into the lucrative job of fund raising and being a talking head, most likely hosting her own show on FOX, maybe with ‘Batshit Bachman’. There she will make more money (unfortunately) than she could ever dream of making in politics.

Trust me, this girl has plans, but I don’t think they involve government. Which is good, she can do her damage in the private sector, but Scarah does not belong in a prominent government role.

But of course, I could be wrong. =0)

“Anyone familiar with party politics realizes that machine always perfers [sic] someone who is of the machine, even though they might lose, rather than someone who can definitely win, but they cannot control.

George Bush was preferred over John McCain for exactly that reason. Bush had always been the front man for the Republican RINOs in Texas and he continued to be such when he arrived in Washington. He was not capable of leading anything or having an independent opinion, so naturally all of his decisions were disastrous.
    [...snip....]
Whatever the merits of this tempest in a teapot, in underlies the larger issue that there is going to be a fight between Sarah and her supporters and the RINOs with Gingrich or Romney leading the way. I should point out that this is why the 2012 Draft Sarah Committee was formed, to get ahead and stay ahead.”
    [...snip....]
Bob Dole was never a matchup for Bill Clinton, but the party regulars wanted him and he was, of course, defeated. Sam Francis called the Republicans the Stupid Party, in a lot of ways, he was right.”

Last year a special session was called. I don’t think the regular session was extended, I think that they took a break and got back to business for a further 30 days or something like that.

There is nothing, technically, that precludes SP attending the dinner. Nothing except perhaps a paralytic fear of making a speech without a teleprompter and exceptional speech writer paid for by the McCain campaign.

If she would have committed to going to that function she’d have been roasted by Alaskan constituents for many reasons — AK has much on its plate right now, and there are reasonable concerns about whether she is more interested in campaigning than in governing. She cannot expect to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate if she cannot be a governor.

She chose to attempt to enhance her governing resume by staying here in AK. Or maybe it was fear. Or advice from her “handlers” that she was in danger of over-exposure. Or maybe a lot of things. The one thing that you can be certain that it was NOT was a desire to govern Alaska. Whether or not she is physically in AK, she is not governing, blackberry in hand or not. She has simply made a lot of shite decisions and shite appointments (of people & with people) and called that governing.

The pro-SP nutters will not care about any of that, they will be there for the duration. The rest have started to wander off to the new attractions & up-and-comers, and will continue to do so.

2012 is along way off in the political landscape of the USA, with are seemingly collapsing global economy. Bush is dumber than GINO IMHO and he found a path to the white house. And GINO became GOV. of Alaska.

Its kind of strange of me being worried about GINO running for office in 2012. I think 911 taught me about the unexpected. I just want to stay present with the here and now in Alaska, and work with peacemakers like BO and the mudflates, to make sure that GINO’s “END of Times”, becomes the best of times for the planet. March 31st, 2009 at 5:55 PM “Sarah has lost her compass. Her inner direction that used to tell her how to navigate these difficult icy waters.”
    —————————————–
Sarah never lost her compass. It’s the same compass she’s always used. Instead of displaying the four cardinal directions, her compass points only to her true North….”ME.” As long as she follows “ME,” she thinks she’s on the right pathway. The problem is that people are now discovering that except for her towering ambition, there’s not much behind her superficial facade.

Further, I don’t think she’s ever had true worldly savvy. She and her high school-educated husband and “co-governor” thought they were being savvy running the guv’s office but with closer scrutiny were revealed as rank amateurs, as well as petty bullies. Her difficulty with ethical boundaries arise because of her insistence on mixing family and business with her elected offices. Does that insistence come from ignorance or bull-headedness? Either way….it’s not savvy, especially in the bigger leagues of politics.

She’s made so many stumbles and been taken advantage of by so many people precisely because she has “small town” experience, an incurious and undisciplined intellect, and a shallow education. Combine these traits with grandiosity and delusions of her own competence and you get a veritable disaster. She cloisters herself with a small bunch of advisors who apparently aren’t much more savvy than she is….or who are afraid to gainsay her decisions.

Lastly…..she doesn’t learn. She’s rigid as a steel pipe. Have you ever heard her apologize for anything? (besides that “one vote” she might have cost McCain in the election).

Here’s an observation from someone who carefully studied the Alaska gubernatorial candidates in ‘06.

My husband (an analytical) and I studied the candidates carefully at a televised debate at UAA. After the debate, the candidates exited through the the area we were standing. Tony Knowles stayed and spoke to the attendees. He was approachable. Andrew Halcro the same. GINO however, was quickly wisked through the crowd completely surrounded by her posse. Unapproachable, and didn’t stop to answer questions. She waved and smiled, as if she was on parade.

Not much has changed. She’ll still wave and smile, but dare not ask a question for she’s constantly protected by her posse. It’s like the weak protecting the weak bully. None of them are very smart, but she’s the leader since she is far more attractive then all of them (the posse).

It’s simply power in numbers, not in intellect. And the ugly ones are there to protect the beautiful princess, now queen.

I have never viewed SP at close range but your observations make sense to me. She is a bully and a manipulator. That works for awhile. The major problem for her is there is no there there. She’s at that point now. She cannot govern and her state is sinking into turmoil. There is no leadership. I think her little forays after the election were not very successful. In particular I believe something happened in Phillie at the Governors Conference coupled with people telling her that hauling her husband and kids everywhere is not the grown up thing to do. The latter infuriates her. She needs her family because she does control them and they shield her from having to interact. If inviting her means inviting and paying for 6 or 8 other people, not going to happen.

Now imagine a single other politician who would cultivate something this strange when it is clearly at odds with their ambition. She isn’t very smart and she really doesn’t have a game plan. Finally, she doesn’t take advice.

Never, never underestimate the ability of political charlatans/ chameleons like SP to alternately cajole or distract the electorate. America has a long history of politicians who have snookered enough people to create formidable obstacles to progressive movements.

    Remember George Wallace?

Much can happen between now and 2012 or 2016.

I agree that based on current trajectory, it’s unlikely that Palin will be the GOP’s future candidate. But then again
I couldn’t believe that based on his record ‘W’ would ever occupy the Oval Office.

There are powerful malevolent forces driven by greed that see SP as a ball of wax that can be molded to ‘front’ for their ambitions. (think Cheney to Bush). The danger now is that our vigilance slips as we see SP flub-up.

As much of a disaster that SP would be as POTUS, her true danger is the ability to convince enough Luddites that the rest of us are flotsam and can be ignored and eventually eliminated. She is well on her way to do that now without being either a third party or GOP presidential candidate. Can any of us ever forget the hatred she stirred up that continues to be directed at us.

While I love seeing her stumble and her supporters in disarray, I don’t count her out. She’s to good for press reports to be ignored. I’m afraid we’ll be saddled with her for many years.

She has fallen in the classic narcissistic hole, like Blago, by being too far from reality and throwing too many people and facts under the bus, and now her battered narcissism and battered remaining handful of close loyalists are not enough to keep the wolves from the door. Reality is knocking (BANG BANG BANG), and, maybe for the first time ever, she’s feeling a little scared. Lucky for us, when narcissists hear the banging on the door, they go into overdrive and make very foolish choices. That’s why the narcissists in the world, that we have all seen or met, fall into two categories, those still walking the tightrope of their narcissistic reality, making life miserable for regular people (yes, your boss, your sister-in-law, etc), and those making headlines as they death-spiral (Blago, that guy who faked his death, Madoff, Palin).

I love that she can’t move either way on the stimulus issue, nor can she stall, and come out ahead. That’s likely why Repugs are now willing to throw her under the bus. I hope the PEOPLE of Alaska don’t lose. I pray legislators in Alaska decide for Palin, since she’s too much of a coward.

I’m glad you all mention Turdblossom. He may have a hand in this decision… He’s probably the one who told Faux Newt is the leader.

Way to look forward, Repugs. Newt Gingrich. Ick.
To go forward, you shift into (D)
To go backward, you shift into (R)

Newt in 2012? Highly unlikely. No charisma, lousy past, too much baggage, and no new ideas. Contract On America was tried before, Newt. Moving on. Don’t forget how superficial we are, either (With Palin, how could we ever forget?). Newt Gingrich is NOT a presidential name. Crawl under a log, Newt. You’re way past your political expiration date.

Mike Huckabee: Still unlikely. Already tried to run on the churchy ticket and failed… to a candidate people believed might have more moderate views. He lost to the ghostly image of “McCain 2000″, which no longer existed by 2008. His annoying, treacly show on Faux isn’t likely to win him moderates, either. And again, our superficial side would never allow the term “President Huckabee”. It’s silly. Say it out loud with me. I can’t keep a straight face either. John Stewart said it best: “The only positive outcome to having a President Huckabee is being able to say ‘President Huckabee.”

Bobby Jindal: Mt. Redoubt says he can’t run. His disastrous debut says he can’t run. His über-evangelical outlook says he can’t win. And back to the superficial, it’s Piyush Jindal. Not Bobby Jindal. Barack had the stones to go by his real name, and Piyush doesn’t. To be fair, Barack Obama just sounds a heck of a lot cooler.

That leaves Mitt Romney, rich-boy flip-flopper extraordinaire. He has the best chance, but if he couldn’t make it past McCain and Huckabee in the last primaries. President Obama would have to fail big to make Romney look better. But he’s got his own crazy religion to carry around. Check out South Park Season 7, episode 12 “All About the Mormons.” If Mitt tries to run in 2012, I’m digging that vid back up… Every time you see Mitt, think to yourself, “is he wearing that magical indestructible Mormon underwear?” I don’t care how businesslike and rational he comes across on camera, underneath it all, literally, he’s thinking “my white long johns protect me from fire and bullets .”

Michael Steele: Do I even have to go there? Seriously… He’s his own worst enemy. Not that I wouldn’t love to hear him in the primaries. I’ll have the popcorn ready…

Gingich vs. Huckabee vs. Jindal vs. Romney vs. Steele in a primary debate? I’m thinking SNL wouldn’t even have to parody that! They could just run the clips…
    My cup runneth over.

    Sorry I struck a nerve, Chris A.
I get info about religions from lots of sources. I mention South Park because it’s a funny take and I was going for humour.

I prefer to read the real details from impartial sources, though… In my experience, asking a believer in any particular religion about their religion is just going to get an explanation of why that religion is the best and why it makes the most sense and why anyone with half a brain can see that THIS religion is the right religion. That’s kinda funny, too… C’mon. Admit it.
Hard to give an impartial answer unless you’re on the outside looking in.
That’s why it’s important to have a sense of humour about it.

And I’m merely pointing out why it will affect Romney because lot of people’s votes are based partially on their outlook toward the faiths of others. I could just as easily have brought up Jindal’s Creationist views, but that’s pretty much well-established. a belief in a 6000 year-old world sounds funny to me as well, but bulletproof underwear… OK, I’ll stop there…

Anybody can have their own religion. Just keep it out of politics. That’s when it stops being funny and starts being dangerous (For real dangerous, like End-Timers with access to “The Button” dangerous). The fact that it DOES affect politics in the first place is what’s funny… though sometimes the joke’s no laughing matter.
