Bedtime in Alaska – Daily Wrap Up

Podcast of Rick Steiner

I’ve had several requests for the audio of Professor Rick Steiner’s recent talk at the Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowshp.  His topic was “Crisis in the Oceans and Free Speech.”  Professor Steiner is an outspoken critic of oil development and mining practices that will harm sensitive marine ecosystems and threaten Alaska’s fisheries.  Because of this, he has had federal grant money withheld. You can read my post on this topic entitled “U of A Professor Loses Federal Grant Money for Being Too Mavericky” HERE.  His talk is very good, as always, and weaves conservation and free speech issues together in a compelling way.  Discussion follows.  Click HERE.

This is Not a Joke

I repeat, this is not a joke.

This is not a snarky montage put together by someone who dislikes the Palins.

This is…apparently…serious.

You know how Sarah Palin refused to be interviewed by Joe McGinniss for his Portfolio article entitled Pipe Dreams because he couldn’t guarantee that his portrayal of her would be positive and flattering?  It looks like Todd is playing by different rules.  Bad move.

“Alaska’s first husband is not scared of you, the cops, or his wife. Get a sneak peak at a week in the life of the ultimate stay-at-home dad, hunter, fixer, and champion snowmobiler right here, then pick up the May issue of Esquire for Luke Dittrich‘s full, in-depth profile.” (Via HuffPo)

Yes, the “First Dude” will be featured in the “How to Be a Man” issue.  Strange and unflattering are the words that spring to mind.  And am I the only one who feels like I’ve seen more of Todd Palin’s socks than I’m comfortable with?  It’s true that it’s kind of an Alaskan rule of etiquette to take your shoes off in the house.  Things up here are muddy and dusty and snowy, and people just do it. I’ve been to many dinner parties with well dressed people standing around in socks.   But I think those rules are allowed to be, and should be suspended when you’re on television, or getting photographed for a national magazine.  Just sayin’.

Who’s the Fairest of Them All?

A few months ago, I got a new Blackberry.  And one of the things I did while fiddling around with it, trying to work out all the settings, was to pick a wallpaper; the image I see every time I turn it on.  I’ve got a picture of spouse and kids standing in front of the Capitol building in D.C.  It makes me smile.

Now, as you would imagine, the State of Alaska issues cell phones to employees.  The new ones they’ve got are really nice.  They’re iPhone-ish.  And guess what the standard issue wallpaper is?  What do you think you see when you turn it on in the morning?   I know what you’re thinking.  It’s got to be a picture of Denali, or the Alaska State Flag, or maybe a majestic bald eagle….  Oh, but you’d be wrong.  The image is a picture of…..Sarah Palin!   All I could think of is how my employees might look at me if I issued a company cell phone with my own picture on it.  I guarantee there would by a massive rolling of eyes and giggling at the water cooler.  Go ahead and try it.  Imagine getting a cell phone from work, and you turn it on and there, staring at you….is your boss.

Now I’m curious if the governor has kept the state issued wallpaper on her phone.

Ouch!

You know it’s bad when you read an article about Sarah Palin that makes you cringe like you’re watching a really lopsided boxing match, and you realize that the source is Fox News.  It’s getting that bad.  I found myself wincing, and turning my head.  By the time I got to the last part, I was reading while peeking out from between my fingers.  This is more on the “Yes, I’ll come”, “I never said that”, “Maybe I will” scheduling debacle of Palin’s hosting, or not hosting, or maybe hosting the House-Senate fundraising dinner.

Congressional Republicans decided Tuesday to ditch the former GOP vice presidential nominee in favor of the former House speaker [Newt Gingrich] for the critical House-Senate fundraising dinner in June 8 in Washington. [snip]

“She was a disaster,” one Republican source told FOX News. “We had confirmation.”

As for inviting Gingrich, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain said the GOP “decided to go in another direction.”

“Speaker Gingrich is a leader,” Spain added.

Another source familiar with the invitation indicated that the campaign committees were so incensed with Palin that they did not even bother to officially notify her that they rescinded the invitation.

Multiple efforts to reach Palin’s staff in Alaska for comment were unsuccessful.

The decision to book Gingrich instead of Palin seems to be indicative of growing discontent in the party with the Alaska governor and her potential ability to lead the GOP.

(Thinking this through veeeery carefully…)  So, if they “decided to go in another direction” aaaannd the “other direction” is Newt Gingrich, because Newt Gingrich is a “leader”, then we have to assume that the leadership of the GOP thinks Palin….isn’t?  (scratches head)  Took ‘em long enough!

So, if Toddie He-Man doesn’t manage to blow the socks off America and make everybody want to vote for his wife, is a photo shoot of one of the family for Penthouse or Hustler next? They’ve tried so much already to keep Palin in the public eye, but she’s losing luster so fast in politics as well as in the media, you gotta wonder if she could even get in to do some TV show of her own by now. What else is left? Hey Sarah… What Would Paris Do??

    I’m wondering if Esquire chose to feature TP because 1) the mag is trying to garner a wider male audience now that their typical readership, Wall Streeters, is more interested in saving their assets than in chasing “a$$”, and 2) that that despite their sense of cutting edge modernity, the magazine really is all about Men first, women whatever. Esquire is basically the male answer to Mademoiselle. The day TP appears as TIME’s Man of the Year, then we’ll all know the end of days has arrived.

    What happens if “Whoops, I did it again” misses meetings, doesn’t fill out or misplaces paperwork, forgets to make critical phone calls or sign important, you know, bills, etc. and, as a result, gosh darn, that stimulus money that would benefit people just slips off the table and out of sight? I’m sure whatever other state that gets it will be mighty happy. Unlike AK citizens sitting in their cold, uneducated, uninsulated, no-job-and-no-unemployment-$$, hungry homes.

    …that that despite their sense of cutting edge modernity, the magazine really is all about Men first, women whatever.

    Todd and SP would both be behind that. In the fundamentalist Pentecostal home, the man is considered the “God Head” of the household and the woman is beneath him. I’m sure he loves it when his wife gets up on a stage and whips up a crowd. It probably makes him feel like a man, since his wife belongs to him, almost in a property sense. SP is the only one in their immediate family who even graduated from high school. Yes, Toddy was a dropout, too. Also.

  13. 13

    OK, so what in the world was someone thinking when they thought it would be a good idea for Todd to do this particular interview. I mean, really. Even without seeing any of the photos, it just sounds like a stupid idea. Unless. . . do you suppose that Sarah really wants out of her job and doesn’t want to run in 2012 after all, but doesn’t know how to say so? Yeah, that’s it. Have your family do enough embarrassing things, and then all this silly political stuff will just go away.

    One thing is clear, though. There’s no responsible adult living in the Palin household. Scary, that is.

    Sarah is so scary, isn’t she? I think a large reason she frightens me so much is because she seems so much like George W: vacuous and preening.

    I just loved the ditzy nonsense she gurgled after someone filed an ethics complaint when she wore Arctic Cat clothing. She is such an idiot that she doesn’t seem to have much understanding of when she comes across like an idiot. . . until afterwards and then she blusters her indignation and blames anonymous bloggers. The last time I checked the deadline for Stimulus was Friday, April 3, I believe. Yep, 3 days from now. AK legislature sure seems quiet on what’s happening, does anybody know? WHERE’S SARAH?

    A long time ago I thought I read, in case of conflict, state legislatures could vote Stimulus Pkg in with 75% “Yes” Votes. Their constituents are going to be p!ssed if they don’t do something properly, IMO.

    That 75% would surely override any veto. I feel worried for our dear pals in AK, this is going to be a stressful week.

BUT, yes we can!

I don’t do anything or go anywhere if I can’t get every cent of the cold hard cash I am due!” (clink, clink, clink, shaking can in Megans face again with angry look on face).

    While baby cries in background, Palin screams, “Where in the heII is Posy. Or Pixy. Or what’s her name? Piper?”

    Megan (shaking) replies, “In school, remember?”

    Palin screams, “Well, get her out of school and have her take this baby, Now!”

    Exhaling, Palin sit behind her desk and begins shaking her little can. Ah, cold hard cash. A smile comes across her face. She knows she can sit there all day and do nothing and the state will keep filling her tin container.

    “Screw CPAC,” she says to herself. “And the GOP.” Tink, tink, tink.

But once she did, this kind of exposure looked pretty risky.

    WRT Ted Stevens, I’m not entirely surprised. Even though the Judge seemed honest and wanting to keep on track, the Dept of Justice and prosecutors were pulling many slight of hand maneuvers. No matter how much the Judge sputtered, they just seemed to keep coughing up more unexpected hairballs.

    IMO, this may have been the intent all along, given how corrupted & politicized the DOJ became under shrub/Cheney. They got Stevens out of office and he walks away free. He may be too old to really run for office by the time it’s up for vote again.

    That’s like giving GINO and all politicians a green light to continue their Giftgate and not be held accountable for it.

    IMO Holder better have a damm good excuse as the more they keep doing things like this, changes in their immigration procedures, etc., it won’t take much more for some people to turn off their approval on Obama as this does reflect on him.

    Your post of the story on the Progressive Alaska also allowed me to read the story of:

    Anchorage Assembly cuts school budget to make room for special tax breaks for three people. The 3 people being developers for 1,068 housing units for which they collect rent. It’s like tax evasion trumps education. So sad knowing how bad education is already.

    I think Anchorage needs to conduct a ‘G20 like’ protest.

    WRT Ted Stevens, I’m not entirely surprised. Even though the Judge seemed honest and wanting to keep on track, the Dept of Justice and prosecutors were pulling many slight of hand maneuvers.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Exactly, (unfortunately). The silver lining in this (from my perspective) is that the new AG is playing it straight, i.e. is honest and his decision not based on politics. This, in itself, is something to cheer about, imo.
    Ted Stevens, as a citizen, deserves to have his conviction thrown out because we MUST have clean trials and convictions, for the good of all citizens.
    He is corrupt, Lord knows, but the integrity of our court system is more important.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I completely agree. I worked in law here in British Columbia for 25 years (sec’y and L.A.) so my psyche is set on ‘autopilot’ that the law be upheld. As soon as I read “charges of prosecutorial misconduct have delayed his sentencing” my radar went up. As I said in a message a few minutes ago, it is wonderful you now have an AG that intends to follow the law, not be dictated by the whims of politicians.

    Or are ALL of them going to just let the clock run down?

    Associated Press – In a letter to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the White House said there was no provision in the stimulus law for a state legislature to accept that money without approval by the governor. In its letter, obtained by The Associated Press, the White House Office of Management Budget urged Congress to change the law.

    “It would be an unfortunate (and we believe an unintended) policy outcome if the children of South Carolina were to be deprived of their share of federal stimulus dollars … because the governor chooses not to apply for stimulus funds,” OMB Director Peter Orszag wrote Tuesday.

    http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2009/03/frivolous-ethics-complaints-you-betcha.html Check out this link. Palin is being attacked for no reason other than evil fears good. All she wanted to do was stand up for her country, and now evil is attempting to ruin her. How will we ever attract good, outstanding people to public office if they have to deal with this kind of stuff. Be careful evil-doers of America, you are real close to getting what you asked for…Obama is going to “take care of you” right up to the point where he owns you all and enslaves you all.

    by antoniososa Florida [Apr 1, 2009 11:17:12 AM]
    Both Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich are patriotic, intelligent, articulate leaders. And we have countless other outstanding conservative leaders, including John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Alan Keyes. None of them is perfect or pretends to be perfect (no human being is perfect), but ANY of them would make a much better U.S. President than Obama, a Marxist who is destroying America. The so called “rifts” and “problems” among conservatives are being created and promoted mostly by the left, whose propaganda machine — based on lies, manipulation, intimidation and fraud — is always at work. When they attack a conservative, like Palin, for example, it’s a sign for us that that particular person is great. The greater they attack, the better the person is.
