Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Palin to Host Murkowski Fundraiser

wolf

I’ve often thought of Sarah Palin and Lisa Murkowski as a pair of alpha wolves, each with their own pack.  Palin, of course, roundly defeated Murkowski’s father Frank Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2006.  Picture a fight in which the older alpha wolf (Frank) has migrated from the larger and more powerful pack that we’ll call the “Senate pack” to the smaller, but still powerful “Alaska Pack” where he enjoys alpha status.

The old alpha wolf is used to winning, and doesn’t think much of this silly young upstart who suddenly wants a fight.  He thinks it’s going to be easy and spends his time napping in the sun, and doing those great dog stretches with paws in front and butt in the air,  and assuming that if the chips are down, the wolves in his pack will support him.

But, you know what they say about assuming.

Young, scrappy and wired for the mission, this new untested wolf gets in the fight and goes right for the throat.  Fur flies, and alpha wolf, after a brief but vicious struggle goes limping off into the woods, howling in pain, disgraced and defeated in front of the whole pack.  It was pretty ugly.

The offspring of this wolf (who is interestingly now the alpha of the Senate pack) is upset.  She is none to pleased to congratulate the new alpha wolf.  There is no frolicking or tail wagging, or licking of faces.  Blood is thicker than wolf politics, and she will not forget that ugly fight that sent her father off into the woods.  There is wariness, and perhaps a little fear, as there should be.

Now comes another potential fight.  The new alpha wolf (Palin) is no longer content with the Alaska pack.  She wants bigger and better, and her sights fall on that other pack.  It’s definitely a step up, she thinks to herself while gnawing on a rabbit.   She clobbered one of the Murkowski pack already, and frankly (pardon the pun) it wasn’t that tough.  What’s one more?  But the thing she does not expect is the support that this wolf is getting from her Senate pack.  It’s not just one wolf she faces, but a whole host of squinty yellow eyes that are watching her every move with the distinct message, “You’ll regret it.”

After months of circling each other with heads low and flat, shoulder blades high, and ears back, the weaker animal has finally rolled over.   Sarah Palin, like the rest of us, has realized that Lisa Murkowski has suddenly become very very hard to beat.  And the last thing a wolf with ambition wants is to lose a fight on the way up.

After years of living in the shadow of Uncle Ted, Murkowski has stepped up as Alaska’s senior senator and has no intention of moving.  She’s smarter, harder working, more level-headed, and certainly more politically savvy than the would be challenger.  In a head to head matchup, Murkowski would send Palin yipping off into the woods, and they both know it.

So the second best strategy for Palin is to get in her good graces.  Wolves don’t host fundraisers for the leader of the pack, but politicians do, and Palin has just announced that she will do exactly that.  It’s hard to imagine Murkowski being a fan of Palin, and I’m sure there has been plenty of eye-rolling behind closed doors when it comes to Palin’s lack of political prowess, reactionary ridiculousness,  and cavalier attitude about governance, and the law.  And the bad feelings about that Sarah vs. Frank wolf fight must still linger below the surface.  But a fundraiser is a fundraiser, and a politician is a politician, so Murkowski has made a graciously adequate statement about the whole thing.

We are obviously very appreciative Gov. Palin has decided to have a fundraiser for Sen. Murkowski,” said Mary Hughes, chief administrator for the Murkowski campaign.

Obviously.

“The governor has no intention of running for the senator’s seat in 2010,” Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said Tuesday. ” She thinks the senator is doing a great job and that’s why she’s looking forward to hosting a fundraiser for her.”

Stapleton said talk that Palin might challenge Murkowski in next year’s Republican primary is “just something that’s been drummed up by the media.”

As a wise sage once said, “There are many paths to the same place.”  If we assume that the “place” for Palin is a 2012 run for the presidency, we can now mark one of those paths “closed”, as Murkowski trots off with head held high to find some nice scenic rock outcropping where she can sit, survey the Republican kingdom, and howl at the moon.

Stranger things have happened, but GINO has too many enemies. Or are they too complacent?

Hopefully the Democrats, Liberals and Progressives will not be sitting on the sidelines just watching and convincing themselves they are the winners.

Get out there — GINO needs help destroying herself….

Imagine sp in an unemployment line….

And how come the Wasilla contingent never seem to loudly bring up the millions of debt she left the town?

Too, how come no one any longer asks how her house was built, allegedly with materials from the sports center?

Very cleverly written post, AKM! If you think the upstart wolf is not going to try to get into Washington early for the big 2012 race, do you think she will attempt to stay in charge of Alaska in 2010? I think there is a strong chance that she will abandon what little effort she has put toward governing our largest state and move closer to the Washington elite. Becoming a Fox News pundit, as if we needed another nutcase on that channel, would be one way to do it. Another angle would be to release whatever book of bull hockey she has in mind, followed my a massive booksigning, fundraising, and campaigning tour of America’s smaller forty-nine states, particularly those in The South, where her brand of insanity is considered more acceptable.

Another great post AKM. Just a small matter for the one wolfing at the moon, let’s not count those rabbit pelts before they get collected.

And here’s a question for the legal begals and tax counsultants, if Sister Sarah decides to share funds collected at ScaraPac with the Sentor, does that mean Gino gets to share the tax burden of those funds collected and so not have to pay all those taxes herself?

My bet Gino is looking for another tax dodge and will dump the Sister Act as soon as she finds a weak spot in the Alfa wolf! Watch out Lisa, Gino wants the top spot and will do anything, and we do mean anything to get there.

So can someone remind me, what was that bounty Gino put on wolves?

She’s NOT a team player by any means, and only wants to be in charge (translate: get your way and boss everyone around). So Sarah is looking for that EE door – where will it appear next for her? IF she tries to run for pres, she has to do it in 2012 because many of her brainwashed bots won’t wait for her if its 2016 and have as much as told her so. So she’s looking at EE experience somewhere, OR she knows she needs a WHOLE lot of time and money to try her smoke and mirrors routine on the country. As AKM stated, Murkowski has the smarts and Sarah doesn’t so she’ll just have to follow the weirdo Muthee’s advice and find some way to infiltrate a different door.

I think Sarah will run 3rd party in 2012 for prez. Then she won’t have to worry about the primarys. First because she wants things her way. Second, because the other runners for the GOP will not be able to bad talk and run bad press on her since she will be in the 3rd party. Sarah can’t take those boo’s remember that appearance with Piper at the hockey game in PA. That is why she is probably staying away from the GOP invites. To much competition there. In the 3rd party it’s all about Sarah!

Of course Palin has an ulterior motive in hosting a fundraiser for Lisa Murkowski. She likely hopes that press releases about this will divert attention from her latest political blunders and at the same time, get her in the good graces of Alaska Republicans who may be upset with her for accepting Stimulus funds.

I think she is being groomed by powerful Neo-Cons (Cheney’s ilk) as a player in a burgeoning third political party (not necessarily as a leader, possibly just a talking head and pair of legs in plastic boots).

That her new legal fund (whether above board or not) has brought in about nearly $1000 in a DAY just goes to show that there are a lot of stupid Americans.

I agree with those who say Palin is going to demand payback in the form of support and connections from Senator Murkowski. This Palin-led fundraiser is not happening because Palin wants to be a supportive team player. We know our girl Scarah. But… what happens if Senator Murkowski wishes to support another candidate in the primaries? Will she feel obligated to Scarah?

Someone else mentioned that Scarah may go third party. Very mavericky. But, she’s no Perot. :-)

It seems to me that support for Palin in getting her out of legal debt is weak. I mean, a paltry $1,000 in a day is nothing. Team Scarah claims that EVERYONE LOVES Palin. So, where is EVERYONE? EVERYONE at $1 a head should be one heck of a lot of money. Surely more than $1,000.

I could be wrong, there could be millions out there, dying to donate, but scared off by the multiple assurances of legality. But then I think back to the crazy crowed Palin drew during the election. These were not very bright people.

Finally, I don’t see Palin as de Gaulle… she’s waaaayyy too much of a limelight HOG. As it is now, she is unable to control the diarrhea of press releases that have nothing to do with governing.

Just her behavior during the last few weeks alone convinces me that she is not fit for any public office. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not paying attention. (Shut up, not you are not.) One, weak people who have little to offer and two, people who fear the growing diversity in the American population look at her and see themselves. That’s her base.

That and guys who think about her most often when they are behind a locked bathroom door.

There are four options of PR response when something has gone wrong:
    1. Do Nothing
    2. Deny

Since the Alaskan Governor can’t take money or gifts while in office, what does Sarah get from all of the magazine articles, GVS interviews, etc. that are going on? Granting it keeps her face out there publicity wise but you know she is not doing it for free.

Bet she is contracting for delayed payments or the payments are going to one of the minor children, with her or The Dud with full powers of Administrator, ie. they have total control of the money and can use it any way they want to.

So when she leaves the Governorship she gets to tap a couple of million and the jerks that donated to “Poor” Sarah’s legal defense, hopefully, realize they have been used and steped on just like so many others.

Sarah of “These Boots are Made for Walking, For Walking Over You.” “Suckuhs”.

If so then it could be to her advantage not to rerun for Governor since it would allow her to use her own wealth to start her run for POTUS. If she gets a couple of book deals she could easily jump into the very wealthy class overnight.
Then a run for Murkowski’s senate looks a lot more possible.

First AKM – great story but you are insulting wolves, rabbits and any other living creature comparing them to Palin and Murowski.
Second – over the past couple of days of money stories and now fund raising doesn’t it seem that there are a few questionable legally ethically odd/strangely stinky smelling lines drawn in the snow here? If the sitting gov has ethics complaints against her because of what she did as the acting gov wouldn’t the state have to defend the governor’s actions because she was doing it while she was the governor? I mean if the state agreed with her actions then state would have to defend her, if the state didn’t agree wouldn’t the state then have to have her charged … impeached … given a one way ticket to Africa … ??? Having private citizens donate to a fund to defend her against actions she did being governor – isn’t there a really weird crossing of the lines there? And now a fund raiser for a sitting senator by a sitting governor to raise private funds for the senator – again isn’t there a conflict of interest because doesn’t once the governor gets elected, they can give verbal support but to raise private funds while being the sitting governor … argh – I need another drink! The fund raising reminds me of the snow mobile jacket mess – Palin wasn’t REALLY promoting the company just because they pay my husband lots of money and they gave me this nifty jacket with my name on it -nooooo, Pailn was wearing the jacket because she was cold and golly-gee she, the queen of fashion, didn’t have a jacket with her – go figure.
