The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Washington Post’s ‘The Fix’ Names Mudflats Best Alaskan Political Blog

hope-flats

The Washington Post Blog, The Fix has named The Mudflats “Best Political Blog in Alaska”!

OK, Mudflatters…everyone turn toward the nation’s capital and wave from The Mudflats!  (we all wave madly)

After sifting through hundreds upon hundreds of recommendations that came in via the Fix comments section,  Twitter and email, we are finally ready to unveil our list of the best political blogs in each of the 50 states.

A huge measure of thanks is in order for all the Fixistas out there for your great suggestions and advice — this has been our favorite Fix post to write in recent memory.

The state-by-state list is after the jump and, beginning tomorrow, will sit in the left rail of the Fix homepage under a link titled (appropriately enough): “The Best State Political Blogs”. That way, you can access the full list for months to come without having to go searching for this particular post. (Big thanks to deputy politics editor — and web guru — Paul Volpe for his help putting that together.)

    But you know, there’s more to the Alaska bloggers story.

    Alaska is such a close-knit, well-connected state, and our bloggers are a community unto themselves. They truly support each other. I’m not even going to name names, because I’d forget someone and then I’d be ashamed of myself …. but you all know who you are, and you know that you all work together for the betterment of Alaskans.

    Just want to also say thanks to ALL of you, because otherwise we never could have said “yes we did!”

    AKM, I hope you realize just how much your blog has empowered us to do more and be more…
    My first visit to the blog was the night before the very first Palin protest at the Loussac. I have been rallying and writing ever since, trying to do my part to get involved and be part of the solution… out of the simple desire to make my community a better place.
    To all the mudflatters out there; thank you for the contributions, suggestions and encouragement that move so many (even those of us who lurk about in the shadows), to get off our butts and into action.

    A major reason I keep coming back. The camaraderie, shout outs, and hat tips to each other! When I first load Firefox, I simultaneously make ‘new links’ for Mudflats, IM, Diva, Progressive AK, Shannyn and flip between them all, plus any other blogs that are suggested. Instead of getting competition, I can read the BEST – all at once – with Great Writers. Thx you ALL AK Bloggers, better than a Reality Show!

    hey guys, you don’t think we’re going to stay here all night gazing at navels, do you?

    For some time now I have been concerned about BigSlick’s question above. Think about it, and what’s happened since November. More and more grandstanding, and more resistance to Washington. More and more “SP and Alaska first.” Less and less watching over the concerns of Alaskans.

    OK, if I live in Alaska and I oppose this, what can I do? I can’t even refuse to pay my state taxes, because we don’t have any. The only thing I can do is leave the state.

    I wish I were back in Boston to throw the tea in the harbor.

    Maybe we can start a campaign to encourage businesses to leave Alaska. (Oh well, just a thought ……)

    Congratulations and thanks, AKM! Like Kathy, I’ve become addicted to this blog and a few other Alaska blogs. I’m feeling a little guilty for not showing a fraction of the interest in the politics of my own state (IL), which may rival yours for corruption but has a tenth or less of the entertainment value and no one with your wit writing about it, so far as I know.

    UK Lady and others, please lay off of Mike Doogan. He was a jerk and deserved our ire for outing AKM, but according to Progressive Alaska, he was the only representative to vote against an absurd resolution extravagantly praising Ted Stevens for his his years of “service” and demanding that the US government apologize to Stevens and give him a right to sue for damages. (Stevens actually can sue the prosecutor or prosecutors at fault, and the US government would end up paying any damages; he just can’t sue the US Government itself. Apparently no one in that lawmaking body bothered to ask a lawyer.)

    I don’t know why it should have taken exceptional courage or brains to vote against this embarrassment, which Shannyn Moore eloquently gutted and flayed on her blog, but Doogan put his contrarian curmudgeonliness to good use on this one and should be given credit.

    @yukonbushgrma, I’m still disturbed by the press release from Angry Meg which thanked contributors to Mrs Palin’s lawyer’s bill from “Alaska and America” hot on the heels of the silly ‘sovereignty’ hooha. Angry is experienced enough to know exactly what she meant – so it’s safe to assume she was drawing a distinction between Alaska and America. Unless a lot of contributions came in from Tierra del Fuego ……… :D

    I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your original post on that … I did read it, and was truly puzzled by it. You might have something there. Perhaps they’re segregating funds somehow, to separate “US” and “Alaska.” Maybe they figure in the future that will be to their benefit.

    My instincts just tell me there’s something brewing in Alaska, political-party-wise. And I’m sure WAR figures into it somehow. (ah, Lt. Gov. on the new ticket – ?)

    Yep, unbelievable. Maybe he just flipped a coin and it came up ‘no.’ But he was the only one who voted against it. Against a totally ridiculous resolution …… and our state has so many other pressing issues –

    and in only a 90-day session!

    Alaska needs to go back to a longer session.

    Faulous News Mudflats!! Congratulations!
    An amusing post on meatharas this morning would indicate you, Celtic Diva and Levi are all being paid by the Obama admistration to write against there beloved! A little “men in blackish”…and complete paranoid rambling!
    Here is the post:

    Hint: Levi Johnston and his family are being paid off for trashing Sarah and Bristol Palin. The motto of the reporters (Woodward and Bernstein) in Watergate was to “follow the money.” The modern MSM doesn’t follow payoffs as long as there’s a whiff of salaciousness to focus on.

    Wouldn’t surprise me a bit. Just as it wouldn’t surprise me if the likes of Celtic Diva and Mudflats is being paid. We already know that Kim Elton who kept Troopergate going has been rewarded for his efforts by an appointment to the 0bama administration.

    It would be very interesting to see if someone eventually unraveles the campaign against Gov. Palin. We need a detective on this case.

    The designation is important for two other things: many of the chosen blogs have connections to the media. Mudflats, at least from what I’ve seen over the past several months, is independent. An independent blog that media outlets have relied on to get timely information during and since the election of 2008.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I get a laugh out of these posting on c4pee, but then I realize they are serious…for example last night they were talking about the mysterious fires in Wasilla, the church, the one that Dar lost her life and there have been several more, they said “wonder what democrat behind that?” then one said “I bet mudflats is behind it!” If any of you has a blogger account please go there and set their little pea brains straight! All the right wingers are paranoid to the max, and Adriana Huffington has a book, “Right is wrong” in which she has a psych talk about they are reacting from their “limbic system” “primitive brain” not the “thinking brain” which is why they are so paranoid! A year ago I wouldn’t of believed such a thing that so many people are like this! But all you have to do is go there and read, everything’s a “obama” plot…so & so is a “obama” operative! And then we have people like WARGINO spouting off ” DC is the enemy” WTF???
    Stapletongue thanking “Alaskans & American’s”….? Aren’t Alaskan’s Americans? did they have a seccession and I missed it? And then there the stuff that happened to AKM and Diva. That really, really depressed me.
    Censorship is alive in America, look to ADN…no one comments anymore.
    The censorship police flag your post unless as Jen from IM says “you got GINO farting rainbows”!
    It is like going down the rabbit hole…
    When logic and proportion
    Which came first the chicken or the egg? (Mudflats or The Fix)
    For me it is Mudflats…it was through the announcement about Mudflats recognition at ‘The Fix’ that I first learned of the existence of “The Fix” for the first time.
    I follow the Washington Post itself, but was unaware of its blog, “The Fix” until I saw a comment about Mudflats making this list while I was reading another thread.
    If it weren’t for Mudflats, I would still be unaware of the Post’s Blog or this list including the best blog/s in each state.
    ‘The Fix’ came in quite handy yesterday when I wondered what Alabamans were saying about Rep. Spencer Bachus and his ‘list of 17 Congressional Socialists’. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/09/spencer-bachus-socialists_n_185364.html
    I now know that like Alaskans many want you to know that Alabamans are not all like this.
    WooHoo! We all knew Mudflats was great but how marvelous others are finding out as well! The work you put into keeping this constantly up-to-date is incredible. When I want to know what’s going on in our great, albeit crazy, state, I log in to Mudflats – several times a day – and know it will have the most current and interestingly written information available anywhere.
    You rock, AKM!!!! Congrats!
  79. 80
    Congrats, Mudflats! I knew I had found a gem last fall when I wandered in to learn more about Palin, at that time Sarah Who? Now that I have that question answered, I’ve found there are so many other interesting things about Alaska that just don’t get reported to the rest of us, unless we go looking for it or unless Redoubt blows its top. That, of course, inconvenienced a lot of people who ended up being stuck at Sea Tac International. (OT, my favorite stranded flyer comment was someone who said that the airlines should do something about it, because it just wasn’t right that they couldn’t get their flight into Alaska and they were stuck in an airport -huh? Like the airline had control of Redoubt.)
    Anyway, congrats again, and welcome to all who venture through the Mudflats with us.
    Congratulations! August company, indeed! I must say, I’ve clicked on many of the others– I’ve lived in 8 different states and wanted to see what their blogs look like– and I must say, AKM– all have worthy content, but Mudflats has LOOKS. The attractiveness of your blog, its easy to read format, the cleverness of your visuals and illustrations, the clean design– well, in my opinion, you win hands down.
    Content doesn’t matter, if you can’t access it easily. Your headlines always work, and you tell your story with wit and focus.
    I give you First Prize. (and the CA blogs suck. Pity, since I live there.) I wont’ got to a site that bleeps out info like a tickertape. Give me commentary and facts– in a format that fits the material. It’s a (stylish) woman’s touch, that. IMO.
    AKM – you’ve inspired me to check into my local politics and Virginia bloggers. We don’t have near the exciting, gut-wrenching political shenanigans of Alaska, but we do have a Democratic Senator who isn’t really progressive (Mark Warner is in that group with Begich), and we have a Republican Rep (Rob Wittman) who votes the party line – ugh!
