The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Ohhh, the Wheels on the Bus Go……..thud.

OK, kids!  Warm up your TV sets.  Shannyn Moore will be on Countdown tonight with David Schuster who is sitting in for Keith Olbermann.  So grab a beer, or some sparkling cider, or a box of marshmallow peeps, get comfy and hear how the wheels are coming off the Sarah Palin bus.  The good news is that it’s harder to throw people under there if there are no wheels on it.

tire3

Seems like the latest gubernatorial hypersensitivity has to do with the fact that the governor is leaving the state to speak at a Right to Life Banquet during the last week of the legislative session. You know….the week when everything happens.

I hear reports periodically about how the legislators are dealing with the absentee governor.  And when I say “absentee”, I don’t just mean that she’s not in Juneau.  Reports are that even when she’s in Juneau, she’s become increasingly difficult to find.  But when I hear these reports, which are usually quite descriptive, I picture a little animated movie in my mind of various legislators pulling out clumps of their own hair, running around in tiny circles waving sheaves of papers in the air, and just sitting behind their desks clenching their teeth so hard that their faces flush and their eyes get bloodshot and little veins start throbbing in their necks.

Mike and Tim Bradner report in their Legislative Digest that an aide to House Speaker Mike Chenault (R) had printed details on her scheduled trip to Indiana, the act of which apparently unhinged the governor.  She then committed a “terrible breach of respect” by yelling at and “forcefully scolding” the aide.  “This lack of decorum has never happened before,” say the Bradners, who have been tracking legislative matters longer than anyone in Alaska.  And yet again, the governor’s behavior becomes the topic of conversations whispered behind hands in the state capital.

Yikes.

Perhaps the governor had hoped to slip out the back door in the dead of night and attend this conference on the other side of the continent without being noticed?

In addition to the kerfuffle on the Republican side, the Democratic Party had a press availability today in which they chastised the Governor for playing hookie during the critical final week of the session.

Patti Higgins, Chair of the Alaska Democratic Party, said at a news conference today that by choosing to be out of state during the closing days of the legislative session, “Governor Palin is again putting her national political ambitions ahead of the needs of Alaskans and her responsibilities as Governor.”

“With the economy in recession, with Alaska’s unemployment rate over 9 percent, and with these important bills pending that affect our economy and people’s lives, where is Sarah Palin? She’s half way across the country at a Right to Life event. Alaska needs a full-time Governor who is focused on the needs of Alaskans. We call on Gov. Palin to stay in Juneau and work with the legislators,” Higgins said.

Now, we’ve seen this happen again and again.  Palin schedules an event (GOP Winter Retreat, CPAC Conference, GOP House/Senate Fundraising Banquet) and then gets all kinds of heat for skipping out on work.  Then she panics and backtracks.

“I can’t come, I have important business at home” was used for the GOP retreat. Of course, she was actually down the road at the Alfalfa Club Dinner in DC…but we won’t quibble.

“I never really committed to it, and I have work to do in Alaska” was used for the CPAC conference.  Of course, the organizer of the conference said she had committed, and she was on the calendar, and people bought expensive tickets because they thought she’d be there…

“I never said I would.  I’ll let you know what I decide after the Legislative Session is over” is what she told the banquet organizers, who said, “Whatever.  We’ve invited Newt Gingrich.”

And now this.  What will she do?  She’s sold out 2,180 tickets to the event, with another 2,500 overflow tickets available in the adjacent auditorium, where organizers say she’ll make an appearance.

What do you think?

What Will the Governor Do Now?

“Over five months after the election, a three-judge panel has declared Democrat Al Franken the winner of the Minnesota U.S. Senate race. The judges issued their final ruling late Monday, stating “Franken received the highest number of lawfully cast ballots in the Nov. 4, 2008 general election.” They also have determined that Franken is entitled to receive the certificate of election.”

Isn’t it fascinating that we know more about Sarah Palin’s views on her daughter’s sex life and baby daddy than we do about her final stand on the federal stimulus package? I’m tired of the circus sideshow, Gov. If ya can’t separate your personal life and VIEWS (right to life) from your official duties, step aside and we’ll find someone who can actually do the job.

I do think Palin is losing it at this stage…it is fairly obvious now that she is not attending the legislative sessions, because she is so much out of her depth. She is a liar and a fraud and I hope even she will begin to realise that her time is up. I think WAR was the nail in the coffin.

I think she will still go. This has been scheduled for a long time, and being a “right to life’ event it will not be seen as negatively as if she were going to a Republican event.

She wins no matter what the legislators do on the stimulus, since she already turned it down and then invited them to overrule her (pretty please!). If the money is spent, she avoids tough budget decisions, so she really really hopes they will take it!

Her presence won’t affect the WAR issue anyway. If he is voted down, she will blame the recalcitrant Dems and the PJ clad bloggers and blithely go searching for another hateful racist patriarchal Neanderthal to nominate as AG.

As for MN, if Norm cared about his state at all, he would concede right now. Even some Republicans are asking him to step down. Can you imagine what would have happened if Gore had dragged out the 2000 election the way Coleman is doing so now? Gore would have been crucified. Palin comes across as more and more unstable every day. There is no way she’ll ever hold a national office of any sort. If she doesn’t show for the Right-2-Lifers, though, there is nothing left for her. Dems and Indies don’t like her. Moderate GOPers have had enough. It’s only the Right-2-Lifers left, and/or the racists.

I predict Palin will go (AK job requirements be damned!).But some folks there will confront her with her “inconsistencies” related to Levi in the house, Bristol saying abstinence isn’t realistic, appointing a pro-choice judge, and W.A.R. saying that married women can be raped by their husbands…

QUESTION FOR ANYONE READING THIS….One thing I wish someone would look into: how much $$ is Palin making from running for a national office? How much $$ does Palin herself make from SarahPAC? I think she thinks it as a “for profit” venture, like opening a retail store and she is the product in the window.

That sign is too big, kind of like her ego and Ted Stevens trial.

Spanish prosecutors have decided to press forward with a criminal investigation targeting former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and five top associates over their role in the torture of five Spanish citizens held at Guantánamo, several reliable sources close to the investigation have told The Daily Beast. Mudflats has some great new reporting on Sarah Palin’s nomination to be Alaska’s attorney general. It all has something to do with lima beans, homosexuals, and how hot the governor looks in a sponsored jacket. I think. And this Ross classic, on the Exxon Valdez spill:

‘We see almost every day, the same films of what appears to be the same oil-soaked duck pulled out of the water. The state claims to have a number of refrigerated vans filled with about 30,000 carcasses of waterfowl killed by oil. No doubt some of these birds were casualties of oil. But had several thousand people combed Prince William Sound for dead waterfowl any prior summer, as they did in the summer of 1988 [sic], there is no doubt that an equal number of dead birds could have been accumulated.’

She can still spew her beliefs, but at least it will be in the appropriate venue of a church and her congregation will WANT to hear her words of debatable wisdom. She can make the rules and break the rules, as she wishes. She can make her fortune and continue to do things, such as tax evasion, getting her non-profit freak on, obtain buildings, and other ‘gates’, and most of all, power. And it’s all legal (???). She can become world renowned, have her own followers, make her own kool-aid. It’s PERFECT!!!! What do ya think? It’ s what she trying to do anyway, isn’t it?

It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen, and within a year of her taking office. I understand that case is now part of law classes across the country. Embarrassing for the town, but at least that mayor is no longer creating havoc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Governor
    Gubernatorial removal
There are two methods available to remove a governor before the expiration of the gubernatorial term of office.

[edit] Impeachment and removal by the legislature
The governor can be impeached for “misconduct in office” by the State Assembly and removed by a two-thirds vote of the State Senate.

    [edit] Recall by the voters
Petitions signed by California voters equal in number to 12% of the last vote for the office of governor (with signatures from each of 5 counties equal in number to 1% of the last vote for governor in the county) can launch a gubernatorial recall election. The voters can then vote on whether or not to recall the incumbent governor, and on the same ballot, they can vote a potential replacement. If a majority of the voters in the election vote to recall the governor, then the person who gains a plurality of the votes in the replacement race will become governor.

    Main article: 2003 California recall
The 2003 California recall began with a petition drive that successfully forced sitting Democratic Governor Gray Davis into a special recall election. It marked the first time in California’s history that a governor faced a recall election. He was subsequently voted out of office, becoming just the second governor in U.S. history to be recalled. He was replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger

Politics Cloud Judgment in Final Week
from Political Adversaries of Governor Printer Friendly

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-82

Political Adversaries Allow Politics to Cloud Judgment in Final Week

April 13, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin will attend the Vanderburgh County Right to Life dinner in Evansville, Indiana on Thursday as well as a breakfast the next morning for S.M.I.L.E., a nonprofit organization for families with members who have Down Syndrome. Governor Palin had previously personally informed the legislative leadership of her upcoming event and asked if legislators had any problem with her attendance at an event outside the Capitol building. None expressed concerns.

And this event doesn’t cost the state a dime – the governor has no staff, not even state security, with her, though her predecessors did travel with state security even on vacations.

This morning the Alaska Democrat Party held a press conference suddenly expressing concern about the governor’s well-publicized short absence from Juneau.

“It is nothing more than a politically charged shot in the dark,” said Governor Palin’s chief of staff, Mike Nizich. “We view the legislative session as a very serious state issue. This isn’t politics for us; this is Alaska’s future. I have worked for seven governors. Every governor has traveled during the legislative session. Had this group done its homework, they would have realized that Governor Palin has had numerous meetings with lawmakers this session and has been in constant communication with them.

“During the final week of session, legislators rarely want governors around stirring things up,” Nizich said. “We did not anticipate that the governor’s political opponents would want their hands held in the final hours of the session.”

Thus far during the 26th Alaska Legislature, Governor Palin has laid out a forward-looking agenda, including initiatives and bills to progress such issues as an in-state natural gas pipeline and a consolidation plan for Railbelt utilities. She also has focused on reducing state spending and providing assistance to cash-poor villages in Western Alaska that are facing high energy costs. The governor has made her spending priorities clear, including the use of federal stimulus dollars.

A historical review shows that Governor Palin has spent the vast majority of time working in Juneau during the legislative session especially when compared with other governors. Governor Knowles traveled an average of 38 days during session and Governor Murkowski traveled an average of 45 days during session. Governor Palin has only been out of Juneau 14 days as she worked in other communities around Alaska this session. Governor Palin has spent only two days out of state.

Gantry continues to womanize, is often exposed as a fraud, and frequently faces a complete downfall, yet he is never fully discredited and always manages to emerge triumphant and reaching ever greater heights of social standing… (From Wikipedia)

Is that 14 work days plus weekends, or including weekends? C4P and some comments on ADN refer to the legislators taking a 10 day junket, but I don’t remember it being that long, and I do remember it was for an energy conference. Could have been a week long, but they included weekends.

    Hi Mudflaters.
I have a little story I would like to tell.
This evening I had a meeting with our local School Community Committee, which is REAA, for local board where I serve as a board member.
We have these meetings once a month and they are very casual but professional.
We have a three member board and the meeting is also attended by the school secretary and our principal. We have a community member who sits on the regional board and she attended tonight as well. No other community members came this evening though it is an open meeting.
Well the meeting was going along fine and dandy until we got to the report about the school graduation ceremony. Our Principal (first year from out of state but great) stated that the invited guest speaker has not responded to the invitation as of yet and the principal was not sure how to proceed.

Sooooo as the board members sat quietly waiting to hear who the guest was as the other 3 people already knew. A personal friend delivered the invitation and felt strongly that this person would come explained the principal. Then the bomb hit. The principal with a big smile on her face says we invited, YOU GUESSED IT! S.P. Involuntarily I blurt loudly OH GOD NO!
I and hit my head on the table. One person in the room gave me a dirty look, 2 people just looked shocked at me, and I got a sort of bewildered look from one of the board members, who you can tell had about thirty different things going through his head. Being that he is the father of our only graduating student, and is also tribal chief for the local native village council, and husband to the other teacher we have in our small school. Then the other board member looked straight at me and gave me just a shxt eating grin!

When I quit choking and we attempted to discuss weather GINO would show up let alone respond to the invitation. We were assured that the personal friend of Gino who handled the invitation (Click Bishop) would follow through. Of course I can no longer hold my laughter and think that there were a few people out there who would not trust a RSVP from any representative of GINO. So as I try to maintain some professional decorum we continue on with what to do. A few choices were kicked around including the first rude dude with me again guffawing and choking.
Of course we advised that we would need a response from Gino before we could invite someone else. I recommended that another invitation be sent to her office and request an answer by such and such a date and if we receive no response at that time we were to assume that our invitation would be declined. Which all agreed to then we discussed replacements and concluded with the rest of our meeting. At one time the school secretary grabbed the pen from my hand and said I was annoying her because I was violently clicking it.

After the meeting as I was getting ready to leave I mentioned to the secretary that I really hoped that Gino does not come here because I would hate to interrupt my protest out in front of the school to honor my board duties. The secretary was shocked “Why would you do that” she exclaimed.
I, knowing she knows full well my feelings about Gino said “DA” I don’t have enough fingers to count off the reasons but if you want to sit down for an hour…
“But we invited her” the secretary exclaimed with a panicked look on her face (she knows I mean it). My reply “Well I didn’t”. So we chatted for another minute and I hurried home. I was barley in the door when my phone rang. It was our principal wanting to explain to me why Gino was chosen and how the whole thing came about. And was concerned because she thought everybody liked Gino. She explained that being from out of state and with no TV signal available to her in teacher housing she just did not keep up with Alaska politics. I explained to her that I had spent the morning writing letters to our legislators requesting they not confirm Gino’s choice for AG and gave some background among other complaints.
I then told her if she wanted to get better up to date go to the mudflats for some great reading.
I told her on the off chance that GINO did show up that I would picket on the road to the school. She said good for you.

Anyway I thought some of you would enjoy hearing this. Living so far out in a small community I never much get to see any of our representatives, and this one in particular I feel rather strongly about.

The graduation is May 15th. I won’t hold my breath.

Further, if Knowles was gone for 35 days, and 25 of them were on state business (as opposed to grandstanding & posturing for one’s own personal agenda) then he gets a free pass for those 25 days, as they’re out of state, but STATE business related.

Knowles was not Gov then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://ltgov.state.ak.us/PDFs/05LEGS-Law.pdf

And WTH would anyone choose to compare themselves to Murkowski? That’s how she got herself elected, saying she was going to be the ethical answer to the Republican gov Murkowski.

I argue this issue with my daughter all of the time — she brings home a crap grade and when I ask her about it she says “so & so (the one who skips class every day and is failing all of their classes) is getting a worse grade than me!” And my response is “is that all you aspire to, being better than so & so the slacker?”

“Erratic behavior.” That is the phrase both sides of the aisle in Juneau are using to describe Governor Palin as of late. In government, it is unheard of. Last week Governor Palin marched into the office of the legislator and confronted the aide head on. full article:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/041409/sta_429161971.shtml

Ever since Walter Hickel was governor, Kramer said, governors had an unwritten rule of appointing three commercial fishermen, three sport fishermen and one person from Fairbanks to the board. He warned of an imbalance if lawmakers approved Johnson.

“You’re ensuring a board that is dominated by commercial fishing interests,” he said.

The appointment also would mean no one north of Big Lake, a Matanuska-Susitna Borough community north of Wasilla, would be on the board, Kramer said.

“That’s more than half the state of Alaska,” he said. The absence would be especially critical because the board soon will be considering decisions affecting commercial and subsistence fishermen on the Yukon and Kuskokwim watersheds.

State senators asked for rosters of previous Fish Boards. They will vote on Palin appointees Thursday in a joint session with the House.

“You’re kind of between a hard place and a rock, with the fish in the middle,” Sen. Charlie Huggins, R-Wasilla, told Johnson.

While it’s OK to feel sorry for her as a person (I certainly don’t wish her personal ill) there can be no mercy for her on the political front. She’s proven that if you don’t agree with her views, she will show *you* no mercy. Palin has proven herself to be quite vindictive and dangerous, not to mention unethical and incompetent. Her particular blend of personality, evangelism and politics have no place in government. And like you said, she doesn’t seem to be wired to be able to recognize anything she says or does as wrong (that’s the danger).

Her brand of politics needs to be exposed, dug up, ground out completely and the earth salted so it never rises again. As a governor, she’s dangerous enough. As a potential Presidential candidate she’s a catastrophe waiting to happen. It’s our patriotic duty to keep that door shut, even if it hurts to watch.

Very true. If even her press release indicates she informed everyone, why go wingnut on an aide?

But to me, the weirdness was also in the press release saying that it was okay with everyone that she left the BUILDING. Major CYA, IMHO. It’s the way liars try to skirt the truth.

It is those that are against abortion, and against gay marriage that are still supporting her. This is her core group. These are the issues that are a problem for the far right fundamental christian church.

These people would criminilize abortion, and try to legislate morality. We know from our history that we can legislate, but we cannot stop behavior.

I swear…since finding mudflats in August, I come here first…then check the other Alaskan blogs and a few others around the country. ADN unfiltered was/is a troll fest on BOTH sides of the aisle. I have read some of the comments over there during these last months, and most of the posters are just plain dumb.

The interesting thing is, early on it was very “sarahcentric”. Everyone just loved her and bashed Obama constantly. When another poster had a differeing viewpoint…he or she was bashed..unmercifully. Now…some people are waking up. They were saying things the Palin lovers didnt like…and most of it was not done in a nasty manner. C4P and TS started whining and crying…then got threatening.

Pretty soon…newspapers will be old hat. Mudflats always has the current news….I read it in the paper days later.

I said it about Bush, and I’ll say it about Palin–I would feel sorry for her if she was doing all this crap to herself. However, since she is inflicting as much damage on her state as she possibly can, my sympathy for her is severely limited.

It’s actually my guiding philosophy. I am a big bleeding-heart liberal, but when someone’s actions hurt another person, that’s where I draw the line. I can still sympathize, but I have to look at the greater good.

In this case, the greater good of Alaska is predicated on minimizing the damage that Sarah has wrought.

The ADN comments section across the website has been severly compromised over the past week. Yeah, someone at ADN is working ovetime on the delete button..under an article specifically about Levi ande the Palins I brought up Sarah and Molly’s direct quote from Esquire mag about Levi’s “wedding ring being stuck on his finger” and GINO’s response about “you’re stuck now, it’s symbolic”. And today, poof, it’s gone.

ADN now has an article about Chuck Heath complaining that Levi is not paying for diapers. If ADN doesn’t want comments with damning Palin quotes and examples of how they are self-destructing then they need to STOP putting up articles about the family feud’s details.

We’ve had the same types of problems down here in pennsyltucky, but the real problems managed to get themselves permanently blocked and most of the pennlive forums now seem to move along pretty well. They also have the same people keep an eye on the comments sections attached to news stories, although I’ve not seen the numbers of comments as there are with the ADN.
