Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Regardless of how divisive politics can get, there’s another issue in America that sees its people sharply divided, and unwilling to try to understand the opposite point of view.  And it always rears it’s ugly, sugar-coated head right around this time of year.

I refer to …..  the peep.  Yes, that little 98% sugar, 2% artificial color treat that adorns Easter baskets across the land.  You either love them or you hate them.  You were either the kid that left them in the basket until they were petrified (usually about 3 days) and then tossed them in the garbage can, or your’e the kind that still, as an adult, slips a box into the shopping cart hoping nobody will realize they’re for you.

But here’s a feel-good event that might serve to bridge the gap between those who peep and those who do not.  It’s the Washington Post’s Annual Peeps Diorama Contest.  This year’s competition had over 1100 entries.  No worries about the art going bad.  The half-life of a peep is reported to be about a half billion years.  So, yes, it’s great news that even peep-haters have gained new respect for the little creatures, and peep-eaters realize that their most noble purpose may not be sending your pancreas into spasms of insulin overdrive.  So, it’s nice that we’re all singing kumbaya on the issue of peeps, but what does this have to do with Alaska politics?  Let’s ask Dan Zak of the Washington Post talking about the finalists.

Shockingly, we had less than 10 dioramas depicting Sarah Palin — one had her shooting chicks from a helicopter, one had her slaughtering a Thanksgiving turkey. If those dioramas had been a little more put-together, they surely would’ve gotten through.

Yes, sadly not one Palin-peep made it to the finals.  But you heard the man.  It wasn’t because of the theme, it was just the execution (begs pardon for the turkey pun).  So, start planning your diorama now.  I have a feeling Palin may win it next year.

Meanwhile, enjoy the top 40 entries HERE, featuring Edward Hopper Night Peeps, Mrs. Peepcock in the Conservatory with the Revolver, Aretha Franklin’s Inaugural Hat Peep, Bernard Peepoff, and the Octo-Peep.

•Gov. Sarah Palin committed a “terrible breach of respect” to the Legislature by yelling at the staff of the House speaker, Mike and Tim Bradner report in their latest newsletter.

The Bradners’ Legislative Digest reports that Palin was upset about an aide to House Speaker Mike Chenault who printed details on her scheduled trip back East for 36 hours during the final days of the Legislature. She “forcefully” scolded the aide, the newsletter says.

“This lack of decorum has never happened before,” say the Bradners, who have been tracking legislative matters longer than anyone in Alaska.

Reposting as this is slightly more OT here:

I was taking a trip down memory lane yesterday and replayed the turkey pardoning video on ADN. After Palin is asked what she is grateful for, she launches into the phoney family bit… Around 1:45 to 1:49 she tilts her head to the side and makes a weird snarky comment. So obviously insincere. What does anyone make of that?

Two-ish years ago, in South Carolina, I walked through the traveling Peeps Diorama Bus. They had a diorama for every major holiday, and and their theme was “not just for Easter”. They have big ambitions, those Peepsters.

I was not surprised to see so many dioramas have a political or cultural theme. When most of the media drops the ball, so to speak, it is up to artists and citizens to speak truth to power.

I don’t think I could have gotten through the Bush years without Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show.

I love sugar – I put it in my tea and I love chocolate. But not peeps. They’re too much, even for me. So seeing them in dioramas is about their only useful purpose, as far as I’m concerned.

Too bad the SP ones didn’t make it through – it would have given us more entertainment watching the guv self-destruct, I’m sure. As much as she’d like to present that “I’m a tough cookie” image, she’s really not. And I’m all for watching her crumble. But I’ll need more tea.

Also saw an ad by Lenox china for salt and peeper (haha) shakers ( shaped like the pink bunny peep and the yellow chick peep). They were “super cute” but not something I could justify dishing out 30 bucks for…maybe next year. Alas, no Peeps adorned our baskets this year. All this peep talk reminded me of ‘The Brotherhood 2.0′ Videos. Did anyone else ever watch them? I spent an entire year (2007) addicted to them. Briefly two (20-something) brothers spent a year communicating daily by videoblogs (not emailing, texting or phoning). One of the brothers (John Breene) is an awarding winning author of young people’s books and the other (Hank Greene) is a committed environomentalist (ecogeek.com).

The brothers would give ‘punishments’ to each other if they broke the (communication) rules. One of the punishments if I recall was one brother (Hank) had to purchase 100 peeps, eat as many as he could in 6 minutes while discussing the situation in Rwanda. He then had give the rest of them away to people on the street. I think he ate about 12 of them. One alarming, hilarious and strange fact he brought up in the video is that 4 Bunny Peeps are 31 grams and contain 33 grams of carbohydrates. IOW, bunny peeps contain more sugar than bunny!

If you have never watched a Brotherhood 2.0 video, I recommend them. But I warn you they are addicting – kind of like peeps

AKM, I know many readers want you to stick to political blogging, but I love your perceptive take on human nature: it’s true that the candy-eating population is sharply divided on the issue of Peeps. I love ‘em – the colors (yellow’s a classic, but that vivid blood red that’s been introduced recently is fantastic, and the turquoise blue gets points for the way it defies any color occurring in nature,) the shapes (the chicks are cuter than the bunnies,) and the way they swell to many times their original size when placed in the microwave for a few seconds (WATCH THEM CAREFULLY – more than a few seconds and they’ll explode all over the inside of the applicance. You can remove the goo with a paste made of baking soda a water, but please, don’t subject yourself to that, or deny yourself the pleasure of eating the hot, squishy micro-toasted Peep, which is even better if you place it on top of a small chocolate egg to “hatch” as it cooks.)
