The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Hey, Alaskans! We’re #1!

numberone

OK, before you get all excited, and make big a growly noise and head butt your monitor, you’ll need to read all the way through.

We’re #1!

Anyone operating a motor vehicle on the Last Frontier won’t be shocked by this one.  Anchorage was rated the number one city for most expensive gas prices in the country, at $2.40/gallon.  The lowest (and no, it’s not making me want to move there), is Newark, New Jersey.  So, Alaskans are out pumping the most expensive gas in the country at sub-zero temperatures in a petroleum rich state, while New Jersey has nothing but full-service gas stations and the cheapest gas.  Someone explain this to me.

We’re #1!

Remember when pork was fashionable, Alaska?  Way back…five months ago?  We were told that if Alaska wanted to get its share of federal dollars, we HAD to re-elect Ted Stevens, and we HAD to re-elect Don Young.  This was their main selling point.  Conservatives were balling up their fists and jumping up and down telling us the sky would fall if we didn’t get our two Kings of Pork back in the congress.  Now, all of a sudden, many of these same people are cheering while the governor threatens to reject stimulus money coming to Alaska.  The group Citizens Against Wasteful Spending has come out with their annual “pig book” waggling their finger at all those ne’er-do-well states that are part of the problem.  And guess what state tops the list for pork?  Yup. Alaska.    We top the list with $221 million in earmarks, thanks mostly to Ted Stevens.  The irony is that the undisputed Emperor of Pork is the only GOP candidate that many believe could unseat Palin in a gubernatorial election.   Somebody explain THAT to me.

We’re #1!

The Politico has a new poll out about the most trusted and least trusted political leader in the country.  Barack Obama has emerged as the most trusted figure.  I don’t know when the President of the United states has last been thought of as the most trusted political figure, but I’m guessing he may have been wearing stockings and big buckles on his shoes, or he may have been FDR…  As for the least trusted political leader?  That would be our very own governor, Sarah Palin.  Now THAT one nobody needs to explain to me.

I don’t know about what applies currently, But it used to be when Texas was the biggest petroleum producer, and did almost all of the oil refining, Texans paid the highest price for oil, gas, gasoline, kerosene etc.

Because moving these products out of Texas put them under Interstate Commerce control, the amount of tariffs (taxes) that any state could charge was capped by the Washington. Because those products were pumped and produced in Texas, they were not under that control.

There is also the NIMBY problem for any state that does not refine its own gasoline etc. There are multiple opportunities to jack up the price per gallon every time the product is handled, plus the cost of hauling.

But after finally arriving I too am stuck by the rather strange front page photo choice of Palin’s backside. I just have to believe that many of the contributors to the site might believe that is her best asset.

Also, I must say I am deeply touched by the moving tribute to the ACLU and WAR’s noble pursuit of free speech. Yes, I imagine the ACLU is one of C4P’s favorite organizations and they refer to them often.

But for now as far as visiting there again I’ll just cross it off my list and say, been there – done that…

Spring has finally hit Southeast Alaska. Someday I hope you people will visit this area of Alaska. It’s a dream world. The entire State is unique throughout. Alaskans are not a reflection of this governor and you won’t believe how much Alaskans help eachother in times of need. Alaskans truly are hospitable and caring. Palin has worked this divisiveness strategy in the State of Alaska since the day she got elected. I’ve always maintained divisiveness got Palin elected in Alaska and divisiveness will get her unelected. Divisiveness has always been her “smokescreen”. She’s put targets all over Alaska and invited a lot of divisiveness into the state unnecessarily. We are, however, blessed to be living in such a unique part of the world. Take care

Having forced myself to watch most of her 4-10-09 press conference, I don’t know how the press corp was able to (mostly) maintain their composure as GINO prattled on, taking credit for projects (Thompson Point) mostly blocked by her administration, defending her selection of W.A.R. and spinning her word salad to mean the opposite of her original statements (Begich to step down). My favorite was when she said the “over my dead body” about the Levi situation. Not only false, but a little late to matter.

I would love to visit Alaska :) But I will not step one toe there as long as GINO and her kind are in charge, killing wolves, bears, wildlife for the sake of oil.
I just got through reading Joe McGinnis book “going to extremes” and it was written during ’75 about 10 years into the oil boom at the height of the pipeline. Greed and easy money have ruled Alaska ever since. Its such a dichotomy when you look at the beautiful pristine wildness, glaciers of Alaska, majestic mountains. But Probably 75% of Alaska could give a hoot as long as they can suck on their precious pipelines & easy money. Now someone posted a really good article that geothermal is being developed, but during the hearing today, although I missed quite a bit, what I heard was, drill, oil, drill in ANWR, the only people who were against it were Natives fishermen/whaler’s, and other fisherman. It is quite disappointing.
And what’s really terrible is the people whose land is sitting on the oil that is extracted have to pay the most for gas and oil…see Anne’s earlier post.
That is a crime, a crime in a oil rich state.
I hope to someday visit Alaska, when it is not ruled by Big oil and run by idiots like GINO!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s father is taking the 19-year-old father of her grandson to task for not helping to pay for the baby’s care.

In the issue of Us Weekly magazine to be released Friday, Chuck Heath says Levi Johnston is capitalizing on national interviews but not spending money on Tripp, the nearly 4-month-old son of Johnston and Bristol Palin, the governor’s 18-year-old daughter.

Heath says he wishes Johnston would “take some of this money he’s making and buy some diapers with it.”

The unemployed Johnston has said he wasn’t paid for appearances on national television last week, when he complained the Palin family was limiting his access to Tripp since the couple broke up. A message left at Johnston’s Wasilla home wasn’t immediately returned.

Alaska has an opportunity here to move away from fossil fuels and we should take this opportunity. These fossil fuel production companies don’t care about our state. Nor do the mining companies care.

President Barack Obama said he would help states move to a green economy and Alaska needs to do this for our future. Alaskans want green jobs for our children’s future. We want a sustainable clean economy for our future right here in Alaska. Let’s not put Alaska on the butcher block, we need to protect our land, our waters and our wildlife.

Many Alaskans have fought a long and hard fight protecting our state from the abuses of oil, gas and mining companies.

I stopped by See4Pee a bit ago, and was puzzled by the home page picture – Sarah with her back to the world staring off in the distance at some mythical pipeline (it’s all hazy). While it’s the first accurate thing I’ve noticed on the site – I wonder if the good See4Pee folks realize the symbolism there?

There’s actually a story to that: Sea of Pee talked about it in their ‘Leftwing Misogyny’ post. Here’s a VERY SMALL excerpt (you might wanna swig some Pepto Bismol, as a preventative measure!)

“As you all know, we’ve recently changed our website banner. The design was done by our very own Julie “J.” Smith, and the concept was by Julie and me. The photo of Palin was taken by Julie during a rally in Virginia last fall. I liked it because it’s a thoughtful pose and because C4P’s unofficial motto is: “We’ve got your back, Guv!”

I suggested an image of Denali on the left because I liked Gov. Palin’s reference to climbing Denali in her State of the State speech. I wanted the Big Dipper motif because I like how Gov. Palin often uses the phrase “under the great North Star.” (I can imagine her using that in the title of her memoirs.) And finally, we wanted some other image of Alaska on the right. I showed Julie a collection of photos, and she zeroed in on the pipeline. Then we looked for a pipeline photo which would showcase the natural beauty of Alaska. And there it is. It was only after Julie placed the photo in that we realized it was perfect because Gov. Palin is depicted as looking off into the future and studying her pipeline — which is the future. Of course, the pipeline depicted above is the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, but it might just as well be that natural gas pipeline which will someday lead our country closer to energy independence and will secure Sarah Palin’s place in the history of her state and her nation….”

So the future Palin sees isn’t REALLY the future so much as more of the past; just in a different place, spreading her natural gas all over the natural beauty of Alaska for the purpose of progressing her place in history.

    Now THAT’s a pipe-dream, you betcha!

It also goes on to mention that not even the state security ppl aren’t even tagging along.
