Does anyone else find the picture on the front page of the Anchorage Daily News a bit disturbing?
I would post the picture here, but they get a little testy over there when you do that.
I sat at my desk this morning and opened the ADN, and almost choked on my coffee. It’s probably a bad idea to open any Alaska website covering politics while drinking coffee, now that I think of it…
So here it is… Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Governor Sarah Palin.

Yeah, I saw that when I was over there this morning and nearly lost my breakfast. Good thing I wasn’t drinking anything (though I’m beginning to think I need a drink. It is alreay 5 o’clock somewhere, isn’t it?).
I suppose it does raise the question of whether, if the governor were a man, Salazar would allow himself to be photographed blowing in his ear.
Maybe this is why politicians like to meet behind closed doors.

Ken Salazar is Hispanic, and a buss on the cheek is very typical–he did it all the time when AG of Colorado, greeting women politicians, guests… unless he sensed it would be uncomfortable for her.
Looks to me like they were both a little enthusiastic and he got himself a hunk of hair. Rush and Mr. Greta are going to be jealous.

Just passed in Alaska House: HJB25 http://HJR025C.PDF
is seeking federal support for hydro-power power in Alaska “without restriction”–
without any mention of potential negative impacts to Alaska’s wild fish stocks with wrong siting of hydro in Alaska.
Bill’s main sponsor is Rep. Bill Thomas–Republican from Haines, Alaska, who has been pushing a hydro-project up Chilkoot that locals do not support due to serious impacts that would occur to Chilkoot’s important wild salmon and hooligan (eulachon) fisheries.
It is co-sponsored by several good bi-partisan folks. This is how one can put it in a 50-word POMS message:

I am going to go with this: Mr. Salazar would have been perfectly comfortable w/a buss on the cheek, however SP got carried away and wanted to give him a big old hug and the signals got crossed and so you end up with the pictured clinch.
Nice of ADN to print that pic when they must have had about a hundred others to choose from. Not so flattering for the gov! Perhaps, though, Mr. S avoided her like the plague the rest of the time and that was the only pic of the two of them that was able to be taken.

ADN is erasing MANY POSTS and from what I can tell they are ones that are critical of the governor. You can still see some of them that C4P people or Palin herself must be reporting. It is getting out of control there!!!

Until ADN improves their system, just register with a new name anytime you want to comment. You can use the “grace” period until ADN boots you out. The grace period seems to be anywhere from 1 hour to a couple of days.
If you think a comment of yours _might_ get zapped, then be sure to register with a new name before making any other comments anywhere on ADN. Because all the comments for one registeration vanish when one is deemed unacceptable.

There are a few commenters on Halcro today that are having their ADN acct’s deleted and I think it’s the C4P’s and TS’s abusing the “report abuse” buttons. Some articles have nearly 60-70% of comments missing. It seems others are fighting back and hitting the “recommend” button on comments that they like in order to try to offset the c4p’ers.
**Portion of ADN commenter Rules: Avoid abusive “abuse reporting” (i.e. flagging comments solely because you dislike them). **
This is all well and good, but it does not seem as if ADN has a method of controlling the “abusive reporting abusers”. If enough posters report abuse on another commenter, it seems as if the accused’s accounts are being “hosed” without being reviewed by human eyes to see if the abuse actually occurred; it seems automatic. This is allowing the c4p’ers to successfully censor the ADN comments section.
Try as hard as they may, they can never censor EVERY unfavorable comment that is written and printed about their “leader”; there are wayyyyy to many
If you’ve been party to this perhaps drop a mail to the editor and inform him. I think they’ve been hearing a lot about it as one of the commenters over at Halcro said that someone named “rachel” at ADN was looking into it.

The opinion is not by Hollis French. It is a memorandum to Hollis French, sent by Pam Finley who works for the Division of Legal and Research Services/Legislative Counsel for the State of Alaska, as the Revisor of Statutes

Well the lawyer makes sense and in my mind if lawyers say she is breaking the law and can list the laws she is breaking, isn’t that justification for impeachment? What is your procedure for impeachment there. I am sure you have all looked into it. Her behavior is so unprofessional among other things.

Nice legal opinion. To the point, well organized, and even though it acknowledges that you can’t rely on the argument that “a” and “the” are singular (generally, in statutes, the singular is assumed to include the plural and vice versa), the statute is still pretty damn straightforward. Ross said he needs to review the legal opinion by Pam Finley, a lawyer for the Legislature. But he said he believes what Palin did was legal and appropriate, given the time he’s had to look at it to this point.
It’s less than two pages! How hard is that to analyze?
