Is this because of the latest complaint? Does anybody why they are doing this?

Just received this in my inbox:

    Dear ABCDEFG,

    Focus on the Family,
Family Research Council, and Concerned Women for America
    are trying to block the
    Sebelius nomination.

    Help fight back!

Call your senators at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to oppose any delays.

Just a couple of hours ago, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ nomination to lead the Department of Health and Human Services hit a serious road block.

Anti-choice senators blocked a vote today in response to pressure from the big 10 of the anti-choice movement. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America, and seven other anti-choice groups sent a letter yesterday calling on the Senate to block Gov. Sebelius’ nomination.

There’s no way we can allow far-right radicals like James Dobson or Wendy Wright to obstruct this critical nomination.

Please call your senators ASAP and urge them to hold a vote on Gov. Sebelius.

Dobson and company urged the Senate to oppose Gov. Sebelius’ nomination because she is pro-choice, calling the respected and highly qualified leader from Kansas a “politician with serious lapses of conscience and integrity.”1

Anti-choice Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky carried the water for anti-choice groups by holding up the vote due to the “fairly contentious” nature of the nomination.2

Call your senators today to stop Dobson and nine of the most anti-choice organizations in the nation from blocking Sebelius’ nomination.

Step 1: Call the Senate at (202) 224-3121. Let the operator know which Senate office you wish to speak to. If you’re not sure who your senators are, let the operator know what state you live in.

Step 2: Use this message when speaking with the senator’s staff person: “I’m calling to ask the senator to oppose any delays on Gov. Sebelius’ nomination to serve as secretary of Health and Human Services, and I ask the senator to vote to confirm her nomination.”

Step 3: Let us know you called by sending an email to CAN@ProChoiceAmerica.org. Help us keep track of our progress!

Thank you for standing up against the anti-choice ideologues by taking action again.

Legal opinion over the Dept of Law’s Acting AG’s signature (not particularly reasoned or in depth) regarding why Tim Grussendorf is still GINO’s nominee for Juneau Senate. It is dated April 20. A bit late for that, isn’t it?

The opinion says they have to meet in public to vote on legislation. Is approving a nomination legislation? It doesn’t seem to fit that word. But then again, the US Senate meets in public to approve appointees. Or maybe not for a replacement for their own party- just the president’s appointments that were not elected officials. That way elected officials get to approve non-elected officials. So how does AK compare with National rules? Anyone?

Seems to me there is nothing wrong with having a public vote on confirmation of an appointment going forward. Does anyone see a downside to that? There could also be an opportunity, if there was advance notice, for the public to give their input to the legislators ahead of time. I see no harm in that.

However, at the same time I believe the Democrats were perfectly correct in their actions, preventing the Governor from trying to install several people who would not have met the standard of being acceptable to the Democrats and representative of the needs of Juneau. Political gamesmanship is no way to run a state.

    BIG SHOT
(sung to the Billy Joel song “Big Shot”)

Well, you went off campaigning with ol’ John McCain
With your new G.O.P. purchased clothes
You had that beehive hairstyle on your head
And high heels for your toes
Ooh,, and when you woke up in the mornin’
    With your bub-ble burst
And tears pouring out of your eyes
We know “Thanks But No Thanks” was just
    Another one of your lies

Because you had to be a big shot, didn’t cha
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn’t cha
Now your smile’s become a pout
You talked a lot of Reverend Wright
But all you did was scream and shout
You showed us that you’re way too uptight
You tried to be a big shot that night (Ooh oh)

And no one was impressed with your wolf hide dress
Just because you shot the wolves from a plane
And nobody could have really cared less
That you can see the Ukraine
But now you just don’t remember
    The dumb things you said
And I’m damn sure you don’t want to know
I’ll give you one hint, Barbie
I think you got plumbed by Joe!

Yes, yes, you had to be a big shot, didn’t cha
You had the SarahPac girls wowed
Your nose was running pig-snot, oh ya
    Hockey mom without a doubt
Your interviews were such a sad sight
Your so much fun to be around
You had to have the front page, bold type
Upstaging McCain most every night, (Ooh oh)

Oh Oh whoa whoa oh, Oh Oh whoa who-oo-oo-oo-ah,
Oh Oh Oh whoa whoa oh, Oh Oh whoa.

Well, it’s no big sin to stick your two cents in
If you’re talking to someone that’s grown
    But your attacking Levi
Because he was on the Tyra Banks Show
No, no, no, no, no, no

You had to be a big shot, didn’t cha
You had to badmouth that young boy
You had to be a big shot, didn’t cha
    Just because you were annoyed
You had to have the last word, that’s right
    You know what everything’s about
But still we know that Levi spent nights

    ——
I don’t think it’s a question of “harm” so much as a question of appropriateness. Any public hearings would most appropriately take place in the affected Senate district, not before the Senate.

I think the point of doing this out of the public eye is so that the Senators can have a truly frank discussion about whether or not this is a person they can work with. If negative things were said, and then the person was confirmed, it could be detrimental to working relationships going forward. So, in that sense, some “harm” is possible.

  21. 21
    InJuneauNo Gravatar says:

I don’t think voting on nominations constitutes legislation (though I’m not a lawyer). Confirmation votes on nominees that have to be voted on by the full Legislature (i.e. AG, Commissioners, board appointees…) are voted on in public, but other than the referenced Egan appointment to fill a seat, I don’t think ANY other legislative replacement nominations have been voted on in public in the 50 years of statehood, including the last one GINO made. Didn’t seem to be a problem to her then that the vote was taken in public, so she should stop being so two-faced and deal with it.

  22. 22
    InJuneauNo Gravatar says:

@Rob in Ca–given the tendencies of the current governor to be partisan to an degree rarely seen, I think there could be significant harm to districts based on a vote in public.

    @InJuneau / Rob in Ca

The opinion from the AG’s office appears to me to be harmless in that it just adds the requirement of an open vote to the end of the process. The party caucus involved could still hold closed-door discussions at some time prior to the open session, and at the open session only the involved party would vote. That seems to comply with the open session/public input requirement while still protecting the minority party’s interests by preventing the majority party from controlling the vote.

The main point about closed vs. open voting is that a vindictive governor could very well choose to punish the districts of the legislators who vote against his/her appointee if he/she knows how they voted. Is that really what you think we should risk having happen? And, as I said, she can’t have it both ways…it was fine and dandy for the vote to happen behind closed doors when she got the result she wanted, but it isn’t when she doesn’t. It just doesn’t work that way, as much as she wants to stamp her little feet about it.

It’s easier than ever these days to have a fling with a married woman. With great tools such as AshleyMadison and Craigslist (well, maybe that’s not such a good idea these days), it’s a buyers market.

And yet, most of the women you’ll meet there are not the cream of the crop.

The governor’s spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said Palin did conduct state business on the trip, meeting with three TransCanada Corp. officials for 90 minutes in Chicago. The Canadian company, which holds the state license to build a natural gas pipeline, asked for the meeting.

Now, it seems to me that a 90 minute meeting is a little short to conduct any serious business or to justify flying from Alaska to Indiana to Chicago and back. I didn’t check to see if it is mentioned on the TransCanada website. Isn’t it sad not to be able to trust one thing about this woman?

Hold up—back up—-Didn’t Meg Stapleton say emphatically that Palin was going on a ‘THREE DAY VACATION?” Yup, Yup she did…so now we have a report about seeing Canadian oil people in Chicago…for a whole 90 minutes? Well, we now know the state of Alaska will be sucked into paying her the per diem payments for being on “official” business. Why does no one call her on this stuff she constantly does? It’s sickening. She should have been here, period.

Not to mention her little “tour guide speech” at the beginning of a “PRO-choice” dinner! I thought that was to guarantee a per diem and I posted a link on the other (new) thread…tourism is way down in Alaska, doncha know….?
(Wonder why???) I would love to visit, but won’t until that wolf killin’, polar bear killin’, earth killin’ B*tch is OUT!!! Then I will go visit and enjoy Alaska…!

So this is an ‘opinion’ that the legislature has to vote in the open on replacement senators. It would have to go to court to become law. There is a thing called”precedent” which would probably rule here. Palin let previous replacement appointments get voted on in private- so those were precedents and there you go! There is no case here. She would loose. She allowed this to go by before, and didn’t mind it then.
I also would be afraid of crossing her for my constituents sake and other retributions she might dole out. She has proven to be one vindictive b****!

I sent an e-mail to the Governor and got this great postcard in the mail in response:

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with my office. Active citizens are the hear of a democracy, and we appreciate hearing from you.

    Sincerely,
    Sarah Palin

So lets keep reminding her what the “active citizens” really think. Sure, she just loves hearing from us. lol

For a second there I thought I was reading a Palin Deceptions thread:
“It’s not the reason for the Trip that’s a problem, it’s the timing of the Trip”

Isn’t changing the “three day vacation” into state business like changing the descriptions on the reports for the kids’ travel to events they weren’t invited to into state business? I wish she could just tell the truth from the get-go, stick with it, and stop trying to bilk her constituents for personal expenses.
