Bedtime in Alaska – Open Thread (Corrected Link)

Sleep well, Mudflatters!

The post “There’s Something Fishy in the Yukon” is up on Huffington Post for those who want to leave comments or Buzz it Up!

Also, a variant of the Twitter post is up on Daily Kos and I added a poll!

And for those of you who have been asking where he is, I saw Brian the moose today, hanging out in neighbor Dan’s yard looking very happy in the sunshine. So all is well with our shaggy friend.

Enjoy the open thread!

UPDATE:  Doh!  The Daily Kos link is now corrected.  Sorry about that!

    Morning AKM

Saw the diary on Kos, I must brave it and join there soon. They are an awesome bunch and slightly intimidating for a not such a cerebral soul as myself.

I was wondering if SP going on twitter (which I don’t really get yet), was a way to spin/melt the impending iceberg coming her way according to Alaska Report.

Some time ago I posted about a visit to Regina by a cousin of Brians and how unusual that was as we don’t have forests in southern Saskatchewan and it was up until now a rare siting. However, another cousin has arrived at a resort village, Mistusinne, on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker. Maude the Moose and three of her friends have been hanging out around the second hole of the golf course all winter. Apparently, “she spent much of the winter nibbling on tree branches (on the golf course and in cottage owners’ yards).”

    More twit news

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/toby_harnden/blog/2009/04/30/sarah_palin_signs_up_for_twitter

While the first tweet reads ominously corporate (declaring this is
Palin’s “official Twitter feed” from which “I’ll provide updates on
issues concerning Alaskans”) the second one, encouragingly,
accuses the AP of having “gravely misquoted my staff”.

So maybe we’ll soon be treated to a stream of “you betcha”
and “doggone it” (which Barack Obama nicked last night) tweets
laced with wink signs and invective against John McCain aides.

Yeah, more sarah stupidity. Can’t wait.

Don’t forget that that we have the new blog – I Heart The Mudflats – and there are heaps of ways you can contribute. We outlined some of the ways here in this post –

    http://iheart.themudflats.net/2009/04/26/do-you-heart-the-mudflats/

Posts appear daily at 9am EDT, so don’t forget to check in and see what has been posted each day! ;)

We already have some incredible images submitted which will be appearing on the blog over the coming weeks.

What we are a little low on is guest posts. It could be anything – what we’re really looking for is an insight into the life and times of mudpuppies.

We’d also really love content which can help improve the lives of other mudpuppies – for example given the economy it might be frugal living or saving money or meal planning or great and cheap recipes.

It might be something that can help mudpuppies look after the planet a bit better – maybe recycling or being more environmentally friendly.

Or you might just want to tell us about a trip you took (with photos maybe?) or if you volunteer why not give a bit of insight into what it entails in the hopes of encouraging other mudpuppies to do the same?

You can submit your guest posts via this page –

    http://iheart.themudflats.net/guest-post/

Thanks guys – looking forward to seeing what ya’all come up with! ;)

Great chortle over the HuffPost diary.

Sooo- Sarah’s press releases have averaged 250 to 400 words (1250 to 2000 characters). If most of Sarah’s communications will now be in 140 character bites, this represents a reduction of over 90%. This should offer a budget saving to the people of Alaska. Do you think she will
    a) fire 4.5 of her 5 spokespeople ?
or b) reduce their salaries by 90% ?

    McAllister’s spin was admirable:
The spin: We are jumping on this fashionable new technology so you can receive the Gov’s messages faster.

The real meaning: laPalin is so pissed at the way her messages are coming out that she wants a fail-safe bypass so she can say directly:
“My minions have f– up again also what I really said all along also is [insert 21 character message] also progressing this great state of Alaska.”

Possible 21 character messages to insert:
    June Gov’s dinner YES
    Stupid stim bucks YES
I’ll get you my pretty &

O T (but it is Palin)

I was browsing Daily Kos and the headline was Michele Bachman, but they use Palin as an analogy. According to them Bachman needs to be ‘Palinized’.
Has this made it to the Urban dictionary yet..? Hmm…
    ——————————————-
“The media did actually did a pretty decent job of figuring out both that Sarah Palin was an empty-headed clown and finding a way to let everyone know they knew that without saying it outright. It’s time for them to Palinize Michele Bachmann. She’s a complete dingbat, and is — like Sarah — a dangerously crazy as well. And so far, she hasn’t had a reason in the world to care about using correct information, or to be ashamed enough not to spew her poisonous nonsense every time she sees a camera.”

“Exposing Sarah Palin for what she really is was a task bloggers were all too eager to take on. And while we clearly had an assist from the high profile nature of the office she was seeking that made it much easier than it will be with a relative nobody like Bachmann, the project is worth undertaking if it’s even a tenth as effective. Sarah Palin is a national joke. Michele Bachmann ought to be.” http://www.dailykos.com/
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Wanted to share that there is a blog out there with the goal in mind of Palinizing Michelle Backmann. It’s called Dump Bachmann

Oops! Top Conservatives On Twitter done got broken:

“One week ago today, I sent Mike my thoughts on how TCOT should be run and how we should work together in the near future. This is particularly important, as due to his inability to work in a group decision-making environment, Mike was recently asked to leave the leadership team of Tea Party Patriots, a group that I remain a part of, and I felt it very important to reach clear and mutual agreement on how TCOT should operate. Mike responded that my plan sounded “reasonable”, but that he “may have a few tweaks on it”. Since then, I have asked him repeatedly to follow through and respond with his “tweaks” so that we could resolve any differences and go forward. He has refused to do so, citing other priorities and demands on his time. I asked one final time for his input yesterday, stressing the importance of the matter, but was again ignored.

At this point, I do not feel comfortable continuing to operate this site with a partner who deliberately refuses to communicate with me on fundamental issues, and it would be inappropriate for me to run it by myself given that our agreement was an equal partnership. I have never received a dime for my work on TCOT; Mike, on the other hand, has a paid contract with PJTV for his show “TCOT on PJTV”. I’ve never asked for a cut of Mike’s PJTV profits, but I have asked to simply understand what his agreement is with PJTV for the show that bears our group’s name — a request which Mike has also ignored.”

AKM did you see this one? From the Spectator blog

…”A woman who ran a popular anonymous blog bashing Sarah Palin, The Mudflats, was outed in an email newsletter by Alaska Democratic Rep. Mike Doogan. Doogan was irked that she had posted a piece critical of an email he’d sent constituents. Local newspaper Anchorage Daily News had protected her identity. Doogan defended his outing of the blogger, who went by the pseudonym “Alaska Muckraker,” by comparing her anonymous attacks to the Ku Klux Klan’s ability to hide in their pointy-white hats and sheets.”

Hi guys, I am a little late to the party today but I have to tell you all to go to collegeconfidential dot com for a good laugh. If you go their forum under the parent tab go to parent cafe & then click on election & politics. The hysterical thread is under Brisol Palin’s mother in law buster for selling drugs. Do not start at the beginning go to the end & read backwards. They are coming up with names of shows and songs that fit SP & her gang.

One that I really loved was “You ain’t nothing but a pit bull” by Elvis. It will be worth your time. It is hysterical!!!!!

Sounds like a new version of the Contract ON America. If it involves Palin that’s exactly what will spew from that group. New America, WTH is that anyway? A narcissistic, theocratic, intolerant, mostly white people, fear mongering group is what is sounds like to me. Gah.

They don’t need immunity. They are being given the authority to request that a judge grant it.

AS 12.50.101 deals with immunity of witnesses. It’s just an administrative procedure to get people who would otherwise be incriminating themselves by testifying (and would have the right to refuse, but for this procedure).

They, being McLean and McConnell. They are being delegated powers that otherwise only the Acting AG would have. Essentially, it’s to let more than one person sign the paperwork needed.

New on the Sarah front: we received a fundraiser letter from the “Claire Booth Luce Policy Institute” in Virginia with a photo of Failin’ Palin on the envelope and the statement “A note of support to Sarah Palin enclosed”. The letter rants about why Sarah has the liberals all in a twitter (had to toss in a pun), and includes this note:

    To Governor Sarah Palin:

Congratulations on your historic accomplishments! [sic] Please don’t give up or get discouraged in the face of bitter and mean-spirited criticism from radical politicians and the liberal media.

You have my support, as well as the support of countless other patriotic and concerned Americans. We are grateful for all you have done to advance our conservative ideas.

Thank you for all your hard work. God bless you, and God bless America.”

The lower part of the letter is addressed to the Honorable Michelle Easton, who serves as president of the institute. It asks for donations to support Sarah Palin, and offering that your donation will be tax deductible. whaa????? The letter says the institute is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt EDUCATIONAL organization. They hope to write op-ed pieces, discuss public policy on radio, television and “train tomorrow’s conservative leaders.”

I’m wondering if it’s ok just to send cookies.

re: the Attorney General delegating powers regarding immunity — I’m wondering if they are finally deciding someone needs to deal with the backlog of ethics complaints … would kinda make sense …

re: Claire Booth Luce 501(c)3 — they are really pushing it here. I work for a 501(c)3, and we have to be exceedingly careful about even the *appearance* of political leanings/urgings. My prediction is that eventually someone will get their tax-exempt status pulled. Sure sounds like it should be, and it’s definitely shaky.

  99. 102
    PalimoniumNo Gravatar says:

Thanks, yukonbushgrma! I just visited the IRS site and found this nugget under the non-profit area:

“Depending upon the nature of its exemption, a tax-exempt organization may jeopardize its tax-exempt status if it engages in certain activities. For example, section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations may not intervene in political campaigns or conduct substantial lobbying activities. ”

So if Ess Pee willingly lent her name and support to this group, and if they are raising money on her behalf, does that make a potential ethics complaint #14?

  100. 103
    yukonbushgrmaNo Gravatar says:

    @ Palimonium:

Yeah, I think it should be looked into. There are different types of 501(c)3′s, so I can’t unequivocally state that they are violating the law ……. but on the other hand, it sure sounds like they are pushing it.

We’d have to look at their Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws to see what they have to say.

Their statement that their purpose is “educational” just sounds like a bunch of HOOEY to me!

For what it’s worth, I notice Rep. Mike Doogan is misrepresenting himself as a Pulitzer recipient, of a sort.

    From his website:

“… for most of his adult life [Mike] was a journalist, including nearly 14 years as a columnist for the Anchorage Daily News where he shared in a Pulitzer Prize for Journalism in 1989.”

    http://www.akdemocrats.org/index.php?con_id=28

Actually. he didn’t “share” in it at all. He wasn’t entitled to.

The ADN did indeed win the Pulitzer Public Service Award in 1989:

    http://www.akdemocrats.org/index.php?con_id=28

However, according to the Pulitzer folks:

“The Public Service prize is always awarded to a newspaper, not an individual, although an individual may be named in the citation.”

  102. 105
    ZuzuNo Gravatar says:

Darn, my prior posted before I was done. To continue …

Let’s repeat the Pulitzer rule: Although an individual may be mentioned in the Public Service prize citation, the award is ALWAYS awarded to a newspaper for meritorious service in the use of its resources, and NEVER to an individual.

    http://www.answers.com/topic/pulitzer-prize-for-public-service

This is distinguished from the the award of a journalism Pulitzer to a group of journalists, or even the staff of a newspaper. Those are the only cases where an individual journalist may honestly say he or she “shared” in a Pulitzer.

Doogan exaggerating his resume? Nah….couldn’t happen.
