Monday Oyster Roundup
As Alaskans took a breather this weekend to enjoy the lovely weather, which seems to be fading fast, a whole bunch of little potential blog posts were drifting by on the lazy river. So now it’s time to round them all up with a big net, and have a little Monday Morning Super Caffeinated Speed Blogging! Hang on!
Don Gets a Refund
CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) reports that Don Young, for reasons unknown, is no longer paying his legal team from his legal defense fund. One of his attorneys even gave him a refund. What’s up with THAT?
CC is back on Local Radio Today at 5!
A little bird (and no, it’s not the one on Twitter) says that it may be worth listening to KWMD (104.5FM and 87.7FM in Anchorage, 90.7FM in Kasilof, and 107.9FM in the Mat-Su) today at around 5:00pm Alaska time. CC will be on talking about some kind of virtual, organic radio thing. (scratches head) Tune in to hear CC. For those who can’t, I will keep you posted.
Swine Flu Update
I know, we’re not supposed to call it swine flu. That implies that you get it from pork, or bacon, yada yada yada. Considering what happened in Canada, I wonder if swine call it the Human Flu? Either way, Alaska is preparing for the inevitable. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (I think they let him off just so they wouldn’t have to chisel off the sign) is a major hub, and Alaskans are fond of their travel “Outside,” so announcements were made to let everyone know that preparations are underway. And Alaska Airlines won’t be handing out those little germ-infested pillows, or paper thin blankets anymore. And when they bring them back? I don’t think I’ll ever be using them again.
Early Vote With Eric Croft!
Eric Croft will be casting his vote early today at the Loussac Library at 2:15pm. Perfect time to go cast your vote too, and wish Eric well. Bring friends! Remember this is a special election, which usually has a lower voter turnout than the scheduled ones. Since we only had a 25% turnout last time, this means we could be letting only 12.5% of Anchorage’s registered voters decide this election! Make it YOUR 12.5%!
Why is There Always a Down Side?
All the beautiful warm weather up in Fairbanks has not come without a price. Flooding. The more rapid than usual break-up means fivers are overflowing their banks. 8000 cubic feet of water per second is barreling down the Chena River. Looks like the floodgates will be closed earlier than any year since 1981.
Thanks Anonymous Donor!
Wow. An anonymous donor has given $7 million to the University of Alaska! Whoever this wonderful benefactor is, s/he has donated more than $80 million to schools run by women. The bulk of the money will be used for scholarships for women and minority students, and the rest will go to the new science center. This is the largest private donation in the university’s history.
“We have no idea who this person is,” Ulmer said. “It may have been somebody that I met along the way. It may have been someone who went to school here. It may have been somebody who’s traveled through Alaska a dozen times and they love to go fishing here. I mean, who knows?”
One of the stipulations? That the university not try to find out who the anonymous source is. Shhhhh…..nobody tell Mike Doogan!
Thunder Dome
Looks like our old friend Mt. Redoubt is getting grumbly again. Reports Sunday were indicating increased rumblings as the lava dome has been building in size. Back in 1989 the volcano stayed active for 4 months, with 36 the longest period between eruptions. Today marks Day 30 since April 4th, the day of the last big explosion.
OK….(wipes brow)….now that we’ve rounded up all the little oysters, back to the regularly scheduled blogging.

Short , sweet , and to the point. Thanks for all you do.
Take a look at this. Note the Palin/Bachmann 2012 sign at the rally. Listen to this loon. She is nuckin’ futs.
http://wonkette.com/408314/bachmann-the-government-has-blown-its-load-all-over-us
If you guys promise to keep Redoubt quiet until I get home on Thursday, I promise not to bring the flu back from California. Deal?
That reminds me of a sign at a local Esquire Mag-listed resataurant (if I remember correctly)that says “Coffee: Doing stupid things faster with more energy.” (SP and twitter is my guess.)
There was an eruption in Kamchatka–could you see it from AK?
I came back up from the archives and it was deja vu…I’ve seen this pic before.
I’m heading down again…it is a blast revisiting the comments and the names!
OT just saw SP on MSNBC….she will soon be presented with a white rifle with her name on it (yawn).
AKM, you will kill me…but I’m willing to take the chance.

Mudpuppies, what posts were important to you?
WOW the anonymoose donor strikes again… We cherish your anonymoosity and big, big thanks (Right now a lot of universities are wishing they were run by women).
Good Morning Alaska as I hit the feathers (really! I will detach myself now…)
Snorkeling at this stage!!
Hooray for anonymity. That is quite a gift.
Sorry, the Problem Child was once called Shove Maggot! I had to share that!
LOL–Thunder Dome–I love it!
And, our sunshine is trying to reappear, after one day of serious rain to remind us where we live (rain forest and all that!). It’s loverly out there, and I’m super annoyed that I have to be inside…
Anonymous sources…………..the operative continues!
waves.
If I had to choose who I thought was this donor it would be Oprah . Makes perfect sense to me,she has this kind of money, she is big time for teachers & education. Also why not be anonymous , she has gave & to many charities. Last but not least it was just Taxes due time.
Breaking News:
The piggies in Canada have stopped eating humans!!
Huh?
I must have missed this one — From 05/04 Politico
” Instead, GOP officials typically strive to ignore Palin, routinely leaving her off lists of the party’s rising stars even though she still retains a significant following among grass-roots conservatives and may run for president in 2012.
The euphemistic mantra is that the party has to rebuild based on policy solutions — not the “personalities” the media insists on focusing their attention on. ”
Maybe the Repubs are beginning to get it — we want someone intelligent – that can adequately represent the US to the world. Willing to listen and speak coherently, understand that there are complex problems and one dimentional / simple answer will not resolve the issues facing the world today

Irishgirl,
In Alberta, we have a situation where “the virus may have jumped from a farm worker to the animals, in what could be the first case of human-to-animal transmission of the virus”. That was AKM’s reference to Human Flu above and my post that piggies have stopped eating humans!
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090502/swineflu_pigs_090502/20090502/
IrishGirl–it was reported on the news this morning (at least on NPR) that a Canadian pig farm worker went to Mexico and then when he returned to Canada and went back to work a bunch of the pigs got sick. They were tested and found to have the strain of H1N1 flu that is spreading out from Mexico. The best guess is that he brought back the virus and infected the pigs. Hence, the Canadian pigs have stopped eating humans so they don’t get the “swine” flu! (you know, because all the wingnuts are claiming we’re getting swine flu from eating pork…)
Canadian Neighbor–thanks for that link!
Palin is joining the National Council for a New America, will the real Americans like that?
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/05/04/limbaugh-jeb-bush-and-the-anti-nostalgists-hate-palin/
Ugh. The ‘liberal rag’ ADN has an opinion piece up thrashing those who seek to hold GINO accountable for her unethical activities.
While I do agree with their argument that citizens should make ethics complaints only when it is crystal clear that a violation has occurred, they totally miss the mark in their defining what makes a complaint justifiable in the first place.
For instance, they think that Palin posting ‘political boilerplate’ messages on the governor’s website during the 08′ presidential campaign was OK, even though they admitted that the pro Palin/McCain messages on the site were questionable.
As one commenter put it, “The ADN has officially jumped the shark with this column!”

THE WRECK OF THE SARAH L. PALIN
(sung to the Gordon Lightfoot song “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald ”)
The legend lives on from the North Slope on down
To the town they call Sandpoint, Idaho
The Heath’s one would say, had a daughter that day
Why they kept her, I must say, “I don’t know”
They loaded up the truck and they tested their luck
When they moved to Wasilla, Alaska
Sarah enrolled in school and was nobody’s fool
On the court they called her “Barracuda”.
In 1982 she left for Honolulu
Off to Hawaii Pacific College
She did not last long there nor at anywhere
In her quest for some meaningful knowledge.
She finally did see a journalism degree
After stints at 5 or 6 safety schools
Sometime in between she was a pageant queen
Then she worked in TV for KTUU.
She met up with her fate sometime in ’88
When her TV career was a failin’
And everyone knew, as her parents did too
She would soon be the Bride of Todd Palin.
Long before she did wed, she conceived in his bed
That was the end of her abstinency
While laid out on her back, she gave birth to Lil’ Track
The result of an unwed pregnancy.
She was now in a lurch cuz of her right wing church
But she carried on without a care
She had a beehive hairdo, but had nothing to do
That all changed when she became the Mayor.
She appointed some crooks then she banned some good books
No one lasted if they weren’t on her team
Wasilla’s deficit grew, kids fired-up on homebrew
The town became a year-round Halloween.
She became the next Guv and to show the state love
She proposed to unite remote shore banks
But once in a bind she politely declined
To the bridge she said,”Thanks but no thanks”.
John McCain now you see had to choose a VP
His campaign was certainly failin’
He wanted a she that was tres “mavericky”
So he chose Alaska’s Sarah Palin.
But poor press reviews of her live interviews
With Couric and Gibson oft replayed
Showed she could not spar with the nightly news stars
Let alone outperform Tina Fey
The election was lost and poor Sarah was tossed
From her seat on “The Straight Talk Express”
She went home and did pose in her new store-bought clothes
But Alaskans were not now impressed
She’s no longer a saint due to ethics complaints
She has nobody left now to wink at
Her appointees ignored and her actions abhorred
She’s reduced to shilling for “Arctic Cat”
She gave Levi some lip about visiting Tripp
And Todd’s sister is facing some jailin’
But paternity laws might be the final straw
For the wreck known as Sarah L. Palin
It’s not all bad folks. Here’s a little hope…
REVOLUTION
(sung to the Beatles song “Revolution”)
Aaaahhh!!!
You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to lose the girl
You tell her about evolution
Well, you know
She won’t give that thought a whirl
But she knows about reproduction
She and her daughter can spit ‘em out
Pretty soon we will be free, all right
All right, all right.
You say we need a real solution
Well, you know
Sarah’s days are nearly done
She’s lookin’ for some contributions
As you know
For her Legal Defense Fund
But when you want money
To spread politics of hate
Sarah’s giving us reason to investigate
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
All right, all right
Ahh
She may want to change the Constitution
Well, you know
Her chances there are pretty nil
And her position on the air’s pollution
Well, you know
Even more questionable still
And if she keeps pandering to all the Joe Sixpacks
She’ll never earn most of the population’s votes back
So, don’t you see it’s gonna be all right
All right, allright
All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right,
ALL RIGHT!
lynnrockets – Back in the saddle !! Aerosmith.
Great one, lynnrockets!
Ok Thanks all!
OUR SARAH SHOULD KNOW
(sung to the Beatles song “Your Mother Should Know”)
Let’s all get up and dance to a song
That was a hit before Sarah Palin was born
Though we all wish that she’d just up and go
She really does blow (she really does)
She really does blow
Sing it again
Let’s all get up and dance to a song
That was a hit before Sarah Palin was born
Though we all wish that she’d just up and go
She really does blow (she really does)
She really does blow
Give her a wink and pass her the bong
That Todd’s sister fired-up real early this morn
Sarah Palin should learn to “Just Say No”
Our Sarah should know (our Sarah should)
Our Sarah should know
Our Sarah should know (our Sarah should)
Our Sarah should know
Sing it again
Da da dada da da da dada dada dada da da
Da dada da da
Though we all wish that she’d just up and go
She really does blow (she really does)
She really does blow
She really does blow (she really does)
She really does blow
She really does blow (she really does)
She really does blow
Ye-ah
As for the ‘Down Side’ of spring, we are also on a flood watch in the Yukon River area. Eagle is already flooding, Circle is next, Fort Yukon and so forth. The weather service website said that this could be the worse in our lifetime. They already called Eagle the worse in 70 years. I’m keeping fingers crossed the flood by passes us. (fingers crossed tight).
On the positive side, the 7 million is a great blessing and surprise. Humanity at it’s best.
Nite all
Good one, Canadian Neighbor. Chuckle. Chuckle.
Nite, Irish Girl.
Oh lynnrockets, we could go on and on with that revolution….
Gino and Todd are off to D.C.?

Dr. Patois,
Did Dude get security clearance??? LOL
LOL at Shove Maggot! I remember that one! I used to go by Copper Catfish…and a few variations of that, by adding P. at the end, or adding Hussein in the middle…. you know, silly stuff.
I’m trying to stream KWMD online, but keep getting this message.
This site has been temporarily disabled due to a problem.

Anybody else find a link that works?
And then there’s the pearl–the gift of the assault rifle. flyinureye, where are you?
Here’s an interesting tidbit I discoverd today. Is Sarah going for ethics complaint #14 with her ballot iniative regarding parental notification for teen abortion?

Definitely worth going and voicing your opinion. People are really angry. Andree McLeod even had a comment on this. The “most recommended” comments are very much against ADN. They not only jumped the shark on this one but they lost any sliver of journalistic “soul” that they had left.
Does anyone know if ” The Twit “… has twittered anything today….?
tweet…. tweet….

sarah , give it up. You are P.A.T.H.E.T.I.C.
Rachel just kicked off her show connecting Uncle Ted and the” winner of the Kentucky Derby”
Oh AK. , you are in my bedtime prayers. Vote “NO” on Dan.
Off topic, but not by much…
Late on this one—we were away…..
So now I understand the reticence of the jockey—who was SOOOOO exuberant after the race— in the press conference today. Does the Alaska wind blow cold, even in Kentucky, at this time of year—or were they trying to minimize their win?
I LOVE horses, and have “crewed” endurance horses for years on several continents. Horses are purely honest. It’s either their day or it’s not.
Their owners….not so much.
Mine that Bird is a noble animal. I wish him well, his owner: not so much….his owner should “fess up” or get out of the limelight.
There are many honorable folks who would buy him.
Just sayin”….

I tried to log out and look and they were still there? One of my post are right next to Andree. I was crictical of GINO and ADN…of course.

Eagle is under water. It looks like the ARR between Talkeetna and Hurricane is going to need major repairs from the flooding on the Susitna. The Chena is fairly stable for now – thanks to the Corps of Engineer’s flood plan of 1970′s near North Pole. However, the lower-lying areas (Rosie Creek, etc.) were under water last year, and that was a fairly slow breakup. We’ll all be sandbagging – and NOT Doogan-style – this year!
Please post village reports, AKM, so that we’ll all know where and if to direct efforts to help those who’ve gotten to MUCH of a good thing (springtime).
Swine flu: yes, the pigs call it “human flu”. You’ve GOT to listen to Garrison Keillor interview a pig re this very question:

@The problem child,
I knew it was a Palin generated baby-name…but had forgotten it was you. And it was one of the more memorable ones!!!
