Open Thread – The Legend of Sleeping Lady

sleepinglady

Good morning Mudflatters!  Here’s an open thread to use throughout the day for whatever you like.  It will stay active throughout the day, even when other posts are up.  That way comments on regular posts can stay on topic, and this open thread can serve as a landing pad for all the random thoughts, creative expression, breaking news links, and other things that come up.

It may be helpful to leave this post open and just minimize it.  That way it can stay there as an active tab at the bottom of your screen that you can refer to quickly and easily.

I’ll be posting open threads to pop up at about 7am Eastern time.  I’m not actually up at that ungodly hour (3am in Alaska) but through the magic of the WordPress posting feature, I can set them to “robo post” at that time.  This way, East Coasters will have a shiny new thread for the early news cycle, and won’t have to wait for me to stumble around and clear my head.  And, West Coasters will wake to a bunch of goodies waiting in the thread.  For those of you Alaskaphiles elsewhere on the globe…you can just jump in whenever you like!

******************************************************

The photo above is a shot I took last weekend of the sun setting behind the mountains on the other side of Cook Inlet.  The mountain to the right, as all Anchorage residents know, is Mt. Susitna, also known as the Sleeping Lady.  You can see why.  There’s a beautiful legend about how the Sleeping Lady came to be.  A young woman named Susitna, waiting for her lover Nekatla to return from bringing gifts of peace to an invading army, got tired and went to sleep.  The gifts did not appease the warriors as he had hoped, and Nekatla and many others were killed.  The women of the village pity her and decide to let her sleep in peace.  Why wake her just to break her heart?

Today, Susitna still sleeps peacefully. You can look across Cook Inlet from Anchorage and see her lying gracefully and peacefully asleep. In the winter she is covered by a lovely blanket of white snow. In the summer, her blanket is soft grasses and wildflowers.

It is said when people of war change their ways, peace will rule the earth. Then Nekatla will return. Then, Susitna, the Sleeping Lady will awaken!

The embedded link will take you to the whole story of the Sleeping Lady.  May she awaken soon.  And may I have a camera.

    Mo’ Bristoal Palin opinion here
I noticed she looked awful thin/bobble head like… like the whole Candie’s opportunity may of got her all giddy thinking woah! I can mingle with real celebrities and models of cool clothes. She always looked a little chunky the past few years (even before Tripp) Is it just me, or did it look like she did some serious dieting to fit in with what she thinks is her new “Hollywood Crowd”? Like maybe.. Hey Levi, you mentioned your quest for modeling/acting well look at me!

I am glad people are poking at her “hole filled story” .. I got thinking about the whole Abstinence thing. Being raised heavily in the church I was always told Abstinence before marriage wasn’t about preventing pregnancy but rather you are only supposed to have sex with one person.. your husband/wife.. not about preventing having babies. If that were the case, it should be Abstinence before you want kids period (married or not).

And yes..she looks awfully happy and true mommy star struck (which is good !!) over Tripp… so how does this truly send a message that getting pregnant is a bad thing? Now it would be different if she had given that little baby up for adoption or fine! be the spokes person but don’t bring that baby with you! If you turned the sound off while she spoke you’d think Oh here is a teenage mother that is so proud and happy and looks pretty well adjusted.

I still think her Candie’s choice is more centered around the whole fame and hollywood thing. Her being strangely thin for the first time ever (cept in young teen photos of her) .. looked alot like she’s trimming down to enter her new glamorous career.

ELLEN RATNER: The Rebranding of Bristol Palin

In a clear bid to help Mama rise higher in the Republican Party, Bristol Palin spent yesterday in New York City to help promote Teen Pregnancy Awareness Day. I would not have such a jaundiced eye about her proclamation had she not been singing a different tune just last February when she said that abstinence was “not realistic at all.” Yesterday, a different songbook was invoked as she was saying that “abstinence is the only way you can effectively, 100 percent foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy”. There is also a fool-proof way to lose weight and that is not to eat — but it is also not realistic.

Good Morning! Well, grades all in, now I can goof off, and where better to do that than in the Flats?

I was thinking, my mind always on the tax angle for some reason:

IF Bristol is getting paid any sum over $600, she’ll absolutely have to file a 2009 tax return (Anything amount you make you are supposed to declare, but less than $600 and the people paying don’t have to report it in most circumstances). If she is still being claimed as a dependent on her parents tax return, she cannot take herself as a deduction on hers and will get to pay a nice goodly portion of tax on it.

Plus, still can’t wait to see whose tax return Tripp is on as a deduction for tax year 2008.

There is a blog that covers the missile stuff well, I’ll try to find it. found it

    http://kodiaklaunchcomplex.blogspot.com/

“These budget cuts add up to about half of 1 percent,” Governor Palin said. “But while they do little to put brakes on the exploding federal deficit, they hit Alaska hard. I join our congressional delegation in their determination to see that Alaska’s unique challenges and its key role in national defense are not overlooked.”

“This is an outrageous move at a time when North Korea has shown its willingness to flout international sentiments and conduct missile tests,” Governor Palin said. “America needs a strong missile defense, and Alaska’s strategic location is invaluable in protecting the nation.”

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell expressed concern about the Obama administration’s proposed reduction in oil and gas exploration incentives. “That would have the effect of maintaining our dependence on foreign sources of energy, which is contrary to the president’s stated objective. The higher energy costs for every citizen amounts to a tax on everyone. I hope the president will reconsider.”

Bubbles, they are using UCSB campus as an evacuation center, so that area seems safe. Hope your daughter is doing OK. Hope the other SB mudflatters are doing OK, too.

On a different note, I was reading about Eagle flooding last night on the Fairbanks paper site and was struck by the keep the Feds out attitude to aid. I’m not saying FEMA rocks or anything, but the incongruity of Uncle Ted, “bring us Federal money from the Lower 48″ and giving the rest of us the middle finger is something I’ve not figured out. It almost sounds like they are worried their drug den is about to be found out by the cops. Like a marijuana growing operation in the national forest or something and a brushfire is approaching. What is up with that?

My son freaked out completely, and basically raced us back to the car. The fire problem didn’t used to be year round. It used to be mostly LA and Ventura counties, which really work well together with all areas providing mutual aid. When I was a kid, it seemed like every year in the fall, a fire burned near the county line all the way to Malibu.

The cops from other counties are helping to get people evacuated.

Our local NPR station has won numerous awards for its reporting of these emergencies–it was reporting on this SB fire within 20 minutes of when it started. Where I am, there is barely a breeze now, but last night the sunset was through an amazing amount of smoke over the ocean and islands.

(This response is probably why I’m seemingly obssessed with the flood help or lack thereof. Sometimes you can do it on your own, other times you help others and the next time they help you.)

I am sometimes having communications problems which may be fire/power related even though I’m about 30 miles south.

News Miner has a decent article today about AK Div of Homeland Security assessments of immediate needs in Eagle area. Those folks really do plan…

A major difference here and where you are lies in distance and numbers of people affected but folks do step right up here too… getting news and real information is the toughest part. There’s a Red Cross contact number in Fairbanks now that disaster has been declared. No mention of ability to accept $ donations but gonna give em a ring today and find out.

How do you folks there stay in touch for news and info there?

Traditional news sources employ a series of series of style devices which don’t help a lot in disasters. I would love to see a map with all villages listed along the affected rivers, squibs of info for each from contacts within, and overall assessment info by knowledgable science types and emergency response officials.
I have a friend in San Francisco from university days… News coverage of that huge quake ,centered in the Santa Cruz area a number of years ago, which did so much damage to the Bay Area would have been completely unintelligible if I did not have a passing familiarity of the area from visits… looked like the whole place burned up or fell down from the news .
Sure would like us all to push MSM into practical news reporting …
    Think we can do it?

“Hey Alaskans, what are your feelings with the possible 23 millions federal cuts to your state?”

Can I comment? We had to move from, Alaska, a couple years ago for medical. My husband was born and raised near, Homer, still works in A.K., do I qualify?

Alaska, has an extraordinary, child medical program, Denali kid Care. The guidelines for income eligibility are very generous & extremely, forgiving if you are over the limit yet have deductibles to qualify.

The abuse of this program is overwhelming. The costs associated with misuse and irresponsibility of funds is insane.

Obama cutting monies, may very well, create a meaningful dialog to reevaluate how and to whom the program distributes resources to.

Example, many parents, use the emergency room, instead of a primary physician knowing, all costs will be paid.

Some use emergency services (Life Flight in particular) for transportation from outlining areas to gain free flight travel to “Metro”, Anchorage to shop.

Once in Anchorage, Denali pays for hotel, food, transportation. We were at, Providence Hospital in Anchorage for 3 months. There were 5 families who called in red flag symptoms of their child (Who had none) to guarantee a flight to the city, then abandoned their children, at the hospital, went shopping, movie watching, out to eat, then returned the next morning with Wal Mart bags galore & were flown home.

Many more book specialist visits in Anchorage from places like the, Kenai, to get the per diems, as well. I know, I saw them.

The meals, loading, taxi service are very costly and add up quick.

Knowing Denali will cover all costs of prenatal & birth, more babies are made then would have if the costs were laid on the individual.

Life, for many, in Alaska, is a gravy train.

Free medial, free housing, free schooling, free childcare, free food and money to families. I was blown away volunteering during holidays at food banks and gift giving how many people use their pfd’s against sensibility then come asking for donations.

Please do not flame me, not all Alaskan are this but the way the system is set up for those who do, can easily take advantage of services.

I do think, in a considerable sum, people move to Alaska, especially like, Kenai Peninsula not realizing thee is not a public transportation system and get stranded. The peeve of mine was, they get the above benefits but do not utilize them toward a future, they are just wasted.

Tripp gets a check in 2009 – who are these checks legally made out to? Where does the money go? Bristol, Levi, or split?

So many questions. So fascinating, as Mr. Spock would say ….

Presidency 2012: The Invisible Primary Begins
A Commentary By Larry J. Sabato

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/political_commentary/commentary_by_larry_j_sabato/presidency_2012_the_invisible_primary_begins

*******Another potential 2012 GOP candidate is much better known than Romney: 2008 Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. There is no question that the Alaska Governor is interested in the next round. First, though, she has to get reelected to her current post in the Frontier State in 2010–and the gloves are off in Alaska as other politicians go after Palin and her national ambitions. It is possible, though improbable, that she will shock everyone, decline reelection, and run flat-out for the White House. A third option, running for the U.S. Senate seat of fellow Republican Lisa Murkowski in 2010, is not considered likely. This is despite the fact that Palin defeated Murkowski’s father, Frank, in his 2006 gubernatorial reelection bid and there is no love lost between the Palins and the Murkowskis.

Palin brings to the table high name identification, an intensely loyal base of the most conservative GOP activists, and the diversity element of her gender. More than balancing these positive attributes is that much of her non-GOP name ID is negative, given her poor performance in media interviews on the campaign trail in 2008. It’s a rare McCain staffer who has much good to say about her privately, and one can only imagine the information dump coming if she runs for President. Independent swing voters have been so unimpressed with Palin that, were she to get the Republican Party nomination in 2012, a Democratic landslide would be a live possibility. However, the GOP base, ever eager to make a principled statement, may not care. **************

Bill O calls Gino a “blowfish”!

Bill O’Reilly and Dennis Miller were discussing possible Republican challengers to Obama in 2012, and Miller threw out a Gingrich-Palin ticket, christening it “Newty and the Beauty.” Showing a rare burst of creativity, O’Reilly immediately called them “Newty and the Blowfish.”

Now, putting aside the shocking relevance of a Hooty and the Blowfish reference say 10 years ago, could this have been a slam at Palin? I’m pretty sure he was just trying to make a joke, but still, not a good idea to refer to the potential hope of your party (and that makes me smile..) as “the blowfish..”

This doesn’t even get to the funniest part of the conversation, the idea of Newt “Hospital bed Divorce” Gingrich running for President.

RE: Piper’s lemonade stand… Pardon Me?

This the daughter of a famous and none-too-well appreciated woman. Noone should have to point out that a recognizable child being out by the street isn’t a good idea. Even if the nanny is staying within arms’ length, unless she’s sporting an AK-47, it takes one, at most two men to pick that child up. I’m sure there are police or agents stationed nearby — how thrilled are they that a child is being needlessly exposed to danger?

Palin is a terrible mother. Children pulled out of school for showboating, pre-teens and teenagers left without supervision, infants taken on and off planes, suffering daily the pain of adjusting to atmospheric changes. And honestly, I have always believed that that baby was drugged during the campaign. On stage, he never cried, barely moved. Slept, no matter what the noise level was. Nothing startled him, ever. Tell me that is normal for any child.

And Bristol must have learned from the best, because her child slept through sudden audience participation, despite the lights and noise of a television studio. A normal child reacts to the mother’s emotions — Bristol was nervous and jumpy, and the child didn’t react.

I think the Palin infants are being dosed with cold & flue medication prior to being displayed. Drugging your child is illegal, and beyond that, extremely dangerous.

Someone from CPS should look into it — I’m amazed noone has yet.

Yes I agree! Most babies at that age might have a pacifier in their mouth but are looking around taking in the world and especially looking at their moms. From what Bristol says the kid never sleeps yet there he was out like a light.
Someone should look into this. But who will????? I will be swept under the rug along with everything else gino does that is illegal.

Palin, left the national campaign with bitter feelings leftover. How many times have we seen some lunatic, arriving in Alaska, believing they are incognito and untouchable by their thoughts of a hillbilly police force?

As for Tripp. That baby is HUGE for a four month old. Did you see how long he is? Bristol, had her hand around his little guy one calming him. He looked zonked out but I did not get he was drugged. Someone posted yesterday, he was dragged all over, thousandths of miles, he was probably exhausted. He sure is a cutie.

I wish Palin had gone to the Ak Seafood Highlight and Corespondent dinner.

For one thing, did she give any “credit” to the legislators going? or just that Toad would represent “her”. I think she was trying to hijack this whole event from the legs. Just to make herself look like she was actually doing something solely for Alaska plus get to mingle and get big press.

It didn’t sound like the legs knew of her agenda to ALSO “promote and raise awareness” for the gas pipeline, which the legs saw as a political move on Palins part, I see it as taking advantage or trying to possibly milk some big dollar people or at the very least a try to get some east coast influential support to save her butt as a gov not pulling off her brag lies.

If you look at the foundations web site, this whole foundation was set up by a person (well to do) that fell in love with AK and especially wants to support the Native side of AK. Their whole deal is to promote AK to benefit the native side. So it would be another “feather” in Scarahs hat to be seen promoting native issues, like she really cares, eh. So now Toad the 1/8 Native Ak will still try to fill in for her while she covers her butt looking like a good gov in AK.

AGH………….and it would have been SO fun to watch what happened at the dinner. A comedian host that can’t stand Palin?? and so did not want her to win?? oh, to have Palin in the room with her.

Plus one of the awards is going to media coverage of the skin staff infection that was basically ignored in prisons in AK, which drummed up criticism towards Palin, gov in charge with high school buddy Schmidt running the AK prison show, who is now in line to step into Palins shoes if need be.

LOL…..I’m sure when she got a feel for the weekend picture’s negatives she really didn’t want to go after all. Plus, now TOAD gets to have the state cover expenses don’t ya know, for all 3 palins. GASH

Politically speaking, the only reason I can think on as to why Palin would have wanted to fake the pregnancy would be so as not to damage her political viability as a VP candidate. If the right would have got wind of the fact that her daughter had had a child out of wedlock they would have taken her off the short list.

I don’t want to go too far down conspiracy lane, but I’m just trying to see how this makes sense politically.

I’m late to the thread, as usual. Down here in the Bay Area, we’ve also got a Sleeping Lady, Mt. Tamalpais. There’s a family resemblance. Unfortunately, my photos are from the 70′s, when I lived in Mill Valley, so they are .. um .. somewhere.

A trivial memory: Back in, 74(?), I was driving home from San Rafael in the winter rain, and just at the top of the last freeway grade before the exit, there was a big slow-up in traffic. When I crested the hill, I saw it was because it was snowing [AK link, eh?] on that side. This is, how you say, really unusual in Marin County. It took almost a half hour to get off the freeway and onto the city street, and the whole way I was thinking “Jeez, it’s just a little snow, what is holding these people up?”

Then I came around the last turn and saw that Mt Tam had snow down almost to the mudflats [yeah, they have them in CA too]. It was surreal and beautiful, and folks were just sitting in their cars looking at it until they remembered to move. Mt Tam is a small mountain, but it comes right down into Mill Valley.

Anyhow, the trivia part is, that snowfall (only one I ever saw in Marin) was the inspiration for the Van Morrison tune “Snow in San Anselmo”. I think Van actually lived in Fairfax at the time, but that wouldn’t have scanned nearly as well.

Nice pictures, AKM. You have another talent there.

Now on to GINO. I am not surprised that she cancelled out the East Coast trip. There were two good reasons to do so: (1) There actually is a disaster happening in AK. Despite her usual I-can-do-it-by-phone approach, it was actually sort of gubanatorial to cancel; (2) PR, also, of course. She’s already taken major hits for her lack of response to the winter disaster in the bush. and this is even a photogenic disaster — icebergs smashing houses as opposed to people freezing so their kids can eat something.

Remember, she’s not stupid, just an inarticulate sociopath.

As to Dudd filling in — well, the WHCD is just a celeb-fest, and presumably he was going to escort her anyhow, so having him carry on doesn’t strike me as wrong, although there might be some question about whether the state should reimburse any expenses.

On the other hand, if he “fills in” as the state’s representative at any business meeting, I’m expecting Ethics Complaint Number Whatever shortly. NOBODY does that.

Well, since this appears to be the Palin Pregnancy Thread, I’ll insert my centime.

I think Trig is her kid, for three main reasons. First, statistics. The probability of Sarah having a DS baby is very much larger than the probability of Bristol doing so. I know this is not conclusive, but it is a really strong point.

Second, motivation (or absence of). Trig was born long before GINO emerged on the national scene. In April 08, she was a very popular Governor with well-advertised anti-birth-control credentials. The likely impact of her 17-year-old daughter turning up pregnant on her political ambitions (which, at that point, I estimate were: get reelected and then appoint myself Senator when Ted finally falls over) would have been negligible. It’s manifestly evident that she cannot be embarrassed. She had no motivation to pretend.

Third, behavior. The official version of the story — my water broke, and I embarked on a 12-hour journey involving two long plane flights, without a thought for the possible danger to my child, or the possible inconvenience to my fellow passengers if I went into labor en route — is completely consistent with Palin’s demonstrated I’m-more-important-than-you attitude.

Actually, there’s a fourth reason, which is that Bristol doesn’t really seem stupid enough to have gotten pregnant again so quickly. I mean, we know for sure that she knows contraception exists.

I’ll add quick, however… with very, very, few exceptions (And, Bristol, just doesn’t seem like a deviate), she is young, she can outlive & survive bad choices…even should they hit CNN.

She needs to focus on today. She has a little guy who by all accounts needs her to grow up. Not blame others or dwell on what was or should be.

Palin, she should be burned at the stake for allowing her children to be vulnerable, without guidance or supervision & moreover, exposing her children.

The lies, the threats, the coercions, the very likely criminal acts, Palin, instigated/participated with to cover up her lack of parenting should be known or she should step down, pay her fines and shut up.

This woman seems to have deep pockets and sincere love for AK natives.

When I was a little kid, my uncle served in Vietnam and on a lay-over he spent some time in AK and he bought me the most beautiful, handmade little Eskimo doll. I cherished that doll and took very good care of her. I slept with her soft fur next to my face every night and my mom bought me a little chair for her to sit in when I went to school.

A few years later, we adopted a dog from a shelter and he snuck into my room and chewed off one of her feet. I was devastated! My mom did her best to repair the damage and we moved the little gal’s chair up on my dresser to keep her safe.

Now flash forward to 12 years ago when I was gifted with my dopey Golden Retreiver… I don’t know how the little puppy grabbed by beloved doll, still sitting on her little chair, off of much taller dresser, but he did. And he completely destroyed her. I have never been so mad at an animal in my entire life.

My point being: It would be so wonderful if I could find a facimile replacement for a doll that meant so much to me and maybe the woman running Alaska House can make it possible! I see this as nothing but a win-win for the natives to have a place to sell their crafts for a profit.

It does sound like it was a close call and the Commission decided to err on the side of freedom of expression, which I can respect.

Still, I wonder how forthcoming the AG’s office was in providing all the information they may have had. It doesn’t sound like Kraft ever did a freedom of information (or whatever you call it) request, and as this wasn’t a matter before the courts, I’m not sure what the state’s disclosure requirements might be for an adminstrative matter.

YES , DC was highly intoxicated. That is why the local sheriff was not even allowed on the ranch until 8am the following morning.Incident/accident happened late afternoon. Harry Whittington had long been taken to the hospital. There were a lot of people who had to be “schooled” on what happened. Plus , they had to sober up the VP. The sheriff was kept at the front gate of the ranch until the Secret Service let him in. Then the story was broken to the Corpus Christi paper. My source is connected to one of the people who was in the field hunting quail with the party of 7 people.

Has anyone else here read Sherry Simpson’s book “An Accidental Explorer: Wayfinding in Alaska”?

There is a chapter near the end where she researches local Den’aina Alaskan lore and finds out that the Sleeping Lady story is most likely one hatched by white settlers to Southcentral Alaska as she did not meet one native that knew of that tale.

Not to find fault w/your posting regarding the legend but from a multitude of sources I’ve found that it most likely was a legend created by settlers in the Anchorage bowl in the 1930′s.

Still beautiful, and still poignant, but mostly the native place names and stories were related to where to fish or find game or find places to rest, not romantic tales of lost love or heartache.

Ah, heck, you know the Seven Sacred Pools over by Hana Maui? That was invented (in the 30′s?) by a tourism group.

Still beautiful though, just like AK’s Sleeping Lady.

Can do…squeezes limes, pours tequila, adds triplesec, NO SUGAR, on rocks, or strained….I don’t blend. Me, I like salt on the rim also, too. y usted?

    Hi strangelet,
we were in Maui a few years ago and skipped the 7 sacred pools because they were over run by loud tourist types on that particular day. They were beautiful though, but we decided to take the small road down further and found a wonderful beach where there were no other people.

We have a house on the No.shore of Kauai but we did go to Maui once because we knew someone w/a condo there and it was nice and we went to Haleakala and drove the North shore and camped for a few days there.

The Io (sp) valley was awesome as was the town of Haiku.

If you live there you certainly are lucky!

austintx – don’t know if you’ll see this, but this is the url for an Australian blues singer – he has an American father and lived much of his young life in and around the centre of Australia near Alice Springs and has the strangest accent – which is American mixed with an Australian aboriginal accent. I don’t know UK Lady, you might like him too. Three of my boys have seen him live and said he was great. Anyway any blues fans out there might enjoy this.

Sadly, I do not live in Hana, but rather in pedestrian San Jose CA, soon to move to Groveland in Red Cali.

But the Oheo pools (I can’t manage the Hawaiian accent marks) are pretty cool, allowing for tourists. Hmm, I guess that includes me, but trust me I’m not loud.

On Kau’ai, I’ve always stayed in Poipu, but the north shore is awesome. Good on ya for having a house there. Personally, I like Kau’ai best.

. . . . . . Myself and the Primitive Horn Orchestra will be joined by Mamie Minch from Brooklyn, New York, she’s a singer songwriter in the old-time blues style vein who plays a mean fingerpicking National steel guitar.

This is the last chance to catch us in Australia until much later in the year (probably not til round the end of 2009), so I hope plenty of people make it out to the shows. After this tour I’ll be off overseas for a few months and then doing some US dates with The Primitive Horn Orchestra. C.W.
