The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Dangerous Mud Flats!

~~Photos by Clark Yerrington~~

Got these lovely photos in my inbox the other day, and they gave me a great smile. The mudflats along Cook Inlet can be very goopy and dangerous. There are several horrible stories of people getting stuck there, which I won’t repeat. These signs are posted for the benefit of those who may not know of the hazard. The mudflats you see is where I think of when I need to fling the occasional troll that visits us on the blog. I imagine an actual troll, gripping it by the ankle, and a sort of discus-like flinging maneuver that lands it out somewhere far out on the flats with a resounding and satisfying splat.

And also, of course, they remind me of the quagmire that is Alaskan politics. There are a few good intrepid souls out there, who have mastered the art of staying on top and not allowing the muck to suck them in, but it’s always a challenge. So enjoy the open thread, and remember. Don’t stand still for too long!

***************************************************

A quick note regarding blog comment moderation. After the infamous “outing” six weeks ago, Snoskred and Char, two of our forum administrators galloped to the rescue and were on call to help me moderate the blog comments that get stuck in the queue. We know of course that our semi-beloved spam filter is far from foolproof and it tends err on the side of thinking everything is spam. This may be a bit annoying for those of you who have your comments hijacked, but it’s better than being knee-deep in trolls and Viagra. That’s a nasty combination, believe you me.

So, now that things have settled down a bit, and normalcy has returned, I have freed my two friends from their extra duties. (You can imagine both of them doing the happy dance) But, this means that now you’re once again dependent on just me. So it may take a little longer than usual to liberate your stuck comments, but I promise to check multiple times a day….at least when I’m awake.

Also, please be aware that in matters of “high level moderation” situations both here and on the forums, I’m always the one who makes the final call. So please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or concerns about how moderation happens. If another member contacts you with concerns, please forward them on to me. I’m happy to explain it all in detail to anyone who wants to email me at akmuckraker(at)yahoo(dot)com.

    (Hi Letters, waving wildly)

I think we have mudflats here on Penns Creek. If you step on them you sink ankle deep and when you put your foot out it sucks your shoe off. No major life danger… maybe mudsuckers? Not mudflats?

I missed the former swaps, so when they happen, let us know, sounds like a real fun time, I’d love to join in!

Wondering if we need to vote (rather than bet) to see how long it will take until the book ethics compalint is filed???

    SHE’S COMING HOME
(sung to the Beatles song “She’s Leaving Home”)

Thursday morning at ten o’clock as her day begins
    Silently pacing her hotel floor
Wishing and praying that Todd would not snore
She goes down to the lobby and buys the ADN newspaper
She sees she’s facing some scrutiny
With trouble at home, she did flee

She (We’re fearing for all our lives)
Is coming (We hope she’s feeling our vibes)
Home ( We’re hoping no one as yet may have died)
She’s coming home to occupy her throne
Though she’s hearing jeers. Lies, lies

Bristol awakes and equivocates about abstinence
Did she contradict what she said on Fox?
Should she even be giving these talks?
She breaks down and cries to her Daddy, “can we get out of here?”
Why did I not use some birth control?
What’s to become of my soul?

She (Should not have listened to Mom)
Is coming (Should not have had sex with that bum)
Home (Family Planning would have helped her get by)
She’s coming home now to whine and to moan
For so many years. Cry, cry

Friday morning at nine Sarah has a photo – op
While looking at ice dams from a hill-top
When she leaves there she’ll be free to go shop

She (She must go buy a new thong)
Is having (She must try Sherry’s new bong)
Fun (Fun is the one thing that she loves to buy)
Something inside that she’s never denied
All these many years. Buy, buy
She’s on the phone. Bye, bye

    Hey guys,

The really cool thing about AKMuckraker letting us get out of the blog moderation cage extra duties is that it gives us more time to do some of the things which we have wanted to do for a while now. The to do list is long but there’s some heaps cool stuff on it. :) Plus now I can un-handcuff the laptop from my wrist! :D

One of the first things on our to do list is to put together a swap in memory of Kenny. We’re getting in touch with Tiredmom to find out what he might have liked us to swap next, and once we know that we’ll put a post on the forums with all the info you need to sign up and get involved in the swap.

Swaps are so great. Long before I did one here, I was involved in a secret santa at work. Someone gave me the most awesome coffee mug. Every time I use it I think of them. I’ve had it for years now. :) A mail swap is even better, because it means mail comes to you as a surprise, also too!

I’m sure AKM will announce it in a night thread once we have it all set up, so ya’all can join in. ;)

I’d like to thank everyone for their kindness to me during my time as a comment assistant here. ;) even when I had the “moderating q-tip” pointed in their direction. :)

It’s based on the life of a political hack
And I take a few shots at old Johnny Mac as a paperback writer,

A book of topics that I want a say on,
Which I wrote with finger-paints and a crayon.
It was edited by Todd the school drop-out,
He can’t read too well but he wants to be a paperback writer

Anything that echo’s your sentiments or is in lock step with your thoughts, gets published.

Pretty easy formula if you ask me.

That’s the problem with “progressive” blogs.

There is no debate, there is no other point of view, it’s just a support group for like-minded individuals.

Kind of boring if you ask me.

I used to live in Clam Gulch and Clam Gulch has mudflats too.
There were big signs warning the tourists not to go there.
But they always did, in their Winnebagos, because the beach looked so nice and firm and endless and the tide was WAY out . . .
And they’d get stuck, and people with winch trucks made their livelihood pulling them out. But not right away, because the Winnebagoers always thought that they could get themselves unstuck. And the tide was still WAY out . . .
The thing is, the tide comes in ALL AT ONCE. By the time the Winnebagoers realized that, the winch truckers were right there. But by now their fee had doubled . . .

This reminds me of a great book I read last summer called “The Highest Tide” by Jim Lynch. It’s kind of a coming-of-age story set on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. They have mudflats there, too, and the author does a great job describing those hazardous tides when people get stuck. Also great stuff on the local biology. Glad this is an open thread, as I’m not good navigating the forums… I’d highly recommend this read for adults to teenagers.

Here in Oregon, we mostly just let our feet sink in the sand as the ocean waves ebb and flow–that is if you can stand the cold long enough for you feet to go numb so you can’t feel the cold anymore {{{shivers just thinking about it}}}.

Without decisive action, America’s polar bears could face extinction in the wild by the end of the century.
Yet, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is fighting tooth and nail to remove even more vital protections for these majestic animals. In April, she secured $1.25 million that will help pay for her legal efforts to fight federal protections for polar bears and the rare Cook Inlet beluga whale. [1]
Please help save polar bears from Governor Palin’s deadly assault with your compassionate donation of $25.00, $50.00, $100.00 or another amount to help support our Polar Bear Defense Fund. Your support is critical in our fight in Congress, in the courts and in the media to save the lives of polar bears and other wildlife.
Most know about Governor Palin’s cruel aerial slaughter of wolves. Now Palin has polar bears in her cross hairs.
Palin is actually fighting in court to block life-saving protections for America’s polar bears. [2] Her lawsuit could derail efforts to save our polar bears from global warming, habitat loss, trophy hunting and other dire threats.
Palin buried findings from her own scientists to silence efforts to address global warming that is already causing polar bears to die from starvation. [3]
Palin is helping Big Oil push for more toxic drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Chukchi Sea, vital habitat for these arctic ice kings. [4]

Palin’s last trip to D.C. was January 30 and 31. Friday, private dinner with Fred Malek, and Saturday, Alfalfa Club gathering.

Her lawyer maybe was there , or she whipped by his office to sign a power of attorney to negotiate the book deal in her behalf. And of course she used state phones and computers to stay in touch as details were ironed out. Let’s see the e-mails sarah. Phone logs while you are at it.

Will Palin’s mega-million book deal have a negative impact on the donation income for her legal defense fund? Or, was a decision made to hold off on the book signing announcement until the level of donations slowed down to a trickle?

    Speaking of Trolls….

There is an old Nursery rhyme of Grimm’s fairy tale where there is ‘ a troll under the bridge’ in the story. I was going to ask Who might remember the story…,But I did a Goggle search… Magic !!
    “3 Billy Goats Gruff”
I’ll bet there are some great ‘troll pics’ related to this story that could prove to be useful in a future ‘story-telling adventure’ by AKM.
How about it AKM…? (or Flyinureye could make one up)

I’m not sure how it would fit in but between all the other nursery rhyme characters AKM uses but I think this would would fit right in.

And according to the story the troll lived under the bridge. Are there any bridges in Alaska…. besides the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’?

Sarah could play the part of the Troll maybe…. asking for a ‘fee’ to allow something to happen or take place…. and ” who will play the part of the 3 Billy goats”..? Could be endless possibilities for the role of the 3 goats.
    AKM could think of something……

Here is a snipet of the story if you want to fill in your own ‘ characters’.

Rumor Central: Big story still heading towards the S.S. Palin
A deal-breaker is heading toward the Palins. Can it be stopped? I don’t think so. Will it topple the house of cards, all signs say yes. Stay tuned…

Methinks IMO It could be Gino has signed that book deal before s**t hits the ceiling, i would imagine the Palin clan could live a comfortable life between the book deal & the Alaska fund trust, also in her mind she’ll have told ( the truth LOL ) her side of the story. The End.

    “Why should you attend?

Ethics Camp builds on your personal understanding of ethics and values and provides tools for leadership in public life. Ethics Camp gives you the tools to improve your city’s efforts. At Ethics Camp, you will work with the staff and scholars of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University to explore the most common ethical dilemmas facing public officials and learn best practices for leadership in everyday decision making.

    What will you learn?

Workshops will cover a “Framework for Ethical Decision Making” and topics of particular interest to local officials such as codes of ethics and values, conflicts of interest, campaign ethics and lobbying.

The theme for the camp is “Building Public Confidence” with an emphasis on transparency and leadership. On Wednesday, two media experts will discuss the public’s right to know, sunshine laws, and the role the media plays in government. Thursday’s agenda will be devoted to developing personal and professional leadership in order to best govern in today’s challenging environment. “

this is a good article…..I still shake my head at the appointment of Joe Schmidt.

    http://www.scu.edu/ethics/practicing/focusareas/government_ethics/introduction/cronyism.html

What do favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism have to do with ethics?

One of the most basic themes in ethics is fairness, stated this way by Artistotle: “Equals should be treated equally and unequals unequally.” Favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism all interfere with fairness because they give undue advantage to someone who does not necessarily merit this treatment.

“In the public sphere, favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism also undermine the common good. When someone is granted a position because of connections rather than because he or she has the best credentials and experience, the service that person renders to the public may be inferior.

Also, because favoritism is often covert (few elected officials are foolish enough to show open partiality to friends, and family), this practice undercuts the transparency that should be part of governmental hiring and contracting processes.”

Hey Mudpuppies ~~ I feel like a real live muckraker. Ever heard of the website wowOwow ~ a new way for women? You may not have run into it – it’s not very old. It was growing a community of folks on the comment boards and then along came that little event known as Obama’s election and suddenly the comment boards were flooded with right wing Obama haters (and GINO lovers). The news and political threads have been trashed. I’ve spent some time there and it’s disturbing, if it’s real.
But – is it? If so, these posters must not have a life, because they post constantly, they lie, they smear, they congratulate each other, they complain to the manager and get posts removed, and they get members bumped. I have now been bumped 4 times, but 2 of those I was flaming the boards on a couple of stories to see the pattern.
Friends, it’s ugly. Not only are they shutting out moderate and lefty voices, but they are doctoring the boards to edit the narrative. Now I don’t know what the “rules” are but it just ain’t right.
Go and take a look if you have time. Since one of my flamer personas was nailing and needling about the difference between fact and opinion and being very …well….GINO…..and it is fun when you know they’re fake – and I was bumped for being “nasty” for calling Cheney Dickco – the tone is changing.
I wonder if they thought Hillary would be president?
This is bigger than me, folks. This smacks of a vast right wing conspiracy to create and manage a site aimed at women to prop up the failed republican philosophy. Mudflats is one of the greatest examples of organic community building on the web. wowOwow is a fraud.
