Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

These Boots Were Made for Walkin’…. to Pittsburgh?

netroots1

A couple Mudflatters over at the Mudflats Forum made a suggestion that your humble Muckraker apply for a scholarship to attend this year’s Netroots Nation conference. Formerly known as Yearly Kos, this year’s NN will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the very first Mudstock meetup! So I did some thinking and planning and decided to submit my application for a scholarship which will cover the cost of registration, and hotel accommodations.

So, if you want to vote, you can click HERE and look for the yellow boots! I got a nice email encouraging me to post a photo so I seemed more “real”. So I may post something else, but for now, it’s the boots. I have   110  224 supporters so far!

You can read on my application all the reasons I would love to do this, and know that if I do win a scholarship, I’ll be taking all of you with me and filling you in on all the goings on as they happen.   I’m sure it would be an amazing experience!

For those of you not familiar with NN, here’s what they say on their website:

netrootsnation-front

Netroots Nation amplifies progressive voices by providing an online and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more effective in using technology to influence the public debate. Through our annual convention and a series of regional salons held throughout the year, we strengthen our community, inspire action and serve as an incubator for ideas that challenge the status quo and ultimately affect change in the public sphere.

The fourth annual gathering of the Netroots (formerly known as the YearlyKos Convention) will be held August 13–16 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Netroots Nation 2009 will include panels led by national and international experts; a progressive film screening series; practical training sessions and workshops; and the most concentrated gathering of progressive bloggers to date.

The origin of Netroots Nation is traced to a time when a tremendous and growing number of citizens gathered every day in the virtual world to raise their collective voice and proactively influence their government. That group is broadly called the Netroots and has since grown to include progressive organizations and politicians who use new media technologies to communicate with their constituents.

The convention rebranded to Netroots Nation in 2007 in an effort to more accurately reflect the makeup of its audience and mission of implementing programs that teach and empower Netroots communities to affect change in the public sphere. Past gatherings have included a Presidential Leadership Forum that drew seven Democratic candidates, a surprise visit from Al Gore; an interactive Ask the Speaker session with Nancy Pelosi; and hundreds of panels, roundtables, training sessions, workshops and keynotes.

UPDATE:  Thank you all so much!!  I am completely overwhelmed!  We went from 3 votes to 224 votes in 8 hours, and we’re #2 as I write this.  Absolutely amazing.  Thank you all for taking the time to vote!  I’m not entirely sure when the cutoff is or when I’ll hear anything, but you all will be the first to know when I hear something.

UPDATE II:  WOW!  I just checked in to see the yellow boots in the top spot!  Amazing!  You guys made me feel like the longshot Derby winner Mine That Bird!! (except for the whole “being owned by a member of the Corrupt Bastards Club thing)  Hooray!  I will keep everyone posted when I know something.  You guys are the best.  :-)

Easy to find. You can search by state and our muckraker is the only one from Alaska!. Speaking of which, only 3 out of the 11 supporters are from Alaska as of a minute ago. I’m thinking it’s a time zone thing at this point…waiting for the West Coast to get off work….

We can’t all be lurking from the lower 48, can we?

Wow – I voted for Mudflats when it only had maybe two votes. Why? Because I love Mudflats – and now Mudflats just passed me on the voting. Who say’s payback is hell? Maybe I said it – several times over the last few minutes. No, really, I DO LOVE MUDFLATS and share it with my friends all the time.

Now I have to contemplate being left in the dirt by Mudflats. Other than Linus I can’t think of a better honor of who to be left in the mud by. Though I would like to attend the convention and I will have some more supporters help get BOTH of us there I laugh at the irony of my vote for MUDFLATS possibly being the determiner of who goes. Once you get up in the hundreds of votes – maybe your friends can think to send some my way too….not too many – but enough to keep me in the bottom half.

Whatever. Long live MUDFLATS! Heck I would even argue that you are more deserving than I am.

I really am laughing – but I wouldn’t change a thing and would vote for Mudflats again.

GO VOTE, FOLKS. AKM is currently 4th, but she needs to be number 1on DFA as she is in our hearts.

AKM, I don’t want to tell you what to do, but after visiting some of the other blogs, I noticed that had links up on their webpages in prominent places. Maybe, you should put one up on the right side of the page as well as in the article.

For those having problems…To vote, click on the link provided by Mudflats. Once there click on the boots. Under the heading Grassroot Support click Add Your Support to vote. To view those who have already voted, click Supporters.

To find out how the contest works, click on Rules. There will be 3 rounds with 10 applicants chosen from each round. There are rounds in May, June, and July. Can you enter more than one round? Not sure when the final recipients will be announced.

In the rules section under Who Chooses Who Earns a Scholarship, it says that the applicant with the highest amount of support voiced on the application page by the DFA community will earn a scholarshp in each of the 3 nomination rounds. The other winners will be chosen by a board made up of DFA folks, prominent bloggers, etc. So it looks like you have to be the top vote getter to automatically win a scholarship.

    Let’s ramp it up…

    @ #178 John;
    Hey, thanks for askin’.

Late-night Mudflats is my therapy. Don’t know what I’d do without it. Suffered major withdrawal after the flood/ice when we didn’t know whether the computer lived or died.

Just tonight some of us were gathered at the school (disaster center), having supper. The talk turned a bit philosophical, and someone said, “you know, this thing has really brought people together who never even spoke to each other before.” And it’s true! It has turned our community upside down, in so many ways. There are some good things coming out of this horrible disaster, and all of us here just have to focus on that. There’s no point in looking back and crying over what you’ve lost.

We’ve got each other, we’ve got our dogs, cats, fish and guinea pigs — and we’re still a whole family. Everyone will be fine, but it will just take some time.

    Thanks, John ……

It only takes a minute and we really want AKM to outshine that Kinkaid Guy.

    VOTE VOTE VOTE!

But only one per person, please, in keeping with the Democracy of our great land… One person, One vote.

We are already in Round Two of voting, with the first ending yesterday.

This round ends on June 15th. At that point, the count goes back to Zero for Round Three. That is, if I’m reading this correctly after only limited caffeine so far today!

AKM: Maybe you should keep the post active and “on top” so as many as possible see it between now and then?

If you click on the grey HERE in AKM’s post and get a listing of the top standings, click on AKM’s picture, and then click on “show all” under grassroots supports, you can see if you are being counted. As I read the rules, they will pick 10 people from each of the three groups for a total of 30. I assume that AKM would be in the second group, because to be in the first group, the scholarship application had to be in by May 11. If she is in the second group, we have to be vigilant and keep her at #1 until the middle of June, when the deadline for the votes for second group occurs.

I just cast my vote! I cannot wait to read AKM’s blog about Pittsburgh when she returns from the convention. I hope while AKM is here, we can hold Pittsburgh Mudstock lll.

Meanwhile, my family and I are preparing for our trek (via cruise ship) to Alaska next month. We have plans to meet Bear Woman and InJuneau when we dock in Juneau. Today, I prebooked a summer dogsled adventure in Seward. I also booked a car to rent when we are in Anchorage just so we can drive to Wasilla and gawk out the car windows at the Palins spawning grounds.

Bob Kincaid will, I’m sure, be delighted to be in the same company with AKM. I say that as a fellow Appalachian who is familiar with his blog (as a lurker). Mountaintop removal coal mining is a horrific mining technique in our region and he has been a real voice and personal force fighting that.
For those who are not familiar with mountaintop removal, the mining companies literally remove the top of a mountain and throw the tailings into the valleys and hollers. It destroys our natural streams and groundwater, and generally just flattens the land.
Not to mention taking away forever our natural flora and fauna.
    sigh

386 votes for AKM. Still #1 and #2 is biting your dust at 343. Bob Kinkaid and AKM can schmooze about mines, Sarah Palin and oil spills, huh? Sounds like we need both of them there, but AKM is #1, always and forever!!

Got my vote in last night and my Sister did it today. Sounds like AKM and Bob Kinkaid BOTH deserve to be there and would have a heck of a chance to interact, with much to ‘bring to the table’, totally opposite sides of this big country. I’m rooting for both, although we only voted for AKM.

Glad AKM stuck to the yellow boots, it’s the avatar of the blog and didn’t get lost in a sea of faces.

That’s the spirit, Kath!! Count me in. Bob’s will be less expensive, but I’d like to see those two get together. Appalachia and Alaska, fighting indifference and exploitation together. Aren’t the issues quite similar in many ways? You really have to love the power of this gaggle of mudpuppies.

Eyes and everyone here on the Netroots Nation vote thread, I just opened a thread in the Mudflats Forums for everyone in the Lower 48 (and anyone who wants to fly in from the global Worldwide Mudflats Community) to begin to consult on this topic.

Pittsburgh August 2009 AKM Mudstock Planning (Pittsburgh Mudstock III)

    http://www.themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,7283.msg70204.html#msg70204

Please all Mudpuppies start to comment there so we can begin some kind of three month planning process for this potentially amazing Pittsburgh AKM Mudstock (Pittsburgh Mudstock III) event if AKM can indeed get the scholarship!

I’m concerned that come Monday Kinkaid may have a surge
He has an XM Radio Host backing him
I checked out his supporters and alot don’t even know who he is just that Mike (think that was the first name) Molloy sent them to vote

I’m thinking that Bob Kincaid will/can go (if he wants to) regardless if he is the winner. AKM needs the win to afford the trip.

My daughter in law is sending out emails tomorrow w/links to Mudflats posts and requests for votes (and link) if they like what they read.

It’s Monday morning ( and AK is at 402).

There needs to be another post for people to see on the “front” page linked to this post so the Monday people will be able to see. Or a new one needs to be posted periodically just so the weekday people will see it.

A reminder every once in a while until the voting ends would be a good thing, just in case everyone has not seen it.

    Check their profiles.

    It’s because they’ve been chosen.

I’ve found 8 winners of round 1 so far. But AKM isn’t one of them.

    Deaniac83, Sunnyvale, CA
    mrsjdaniels, Charlotte, NC
    Janice, Los Angeles, CA
    Jim Nichols, Stockbridge, GA
    Mike Nellis, Omaha, NE
    Pam Pohly, Hays, KS
    Bob Kincaid, Beckley, WV
    Slinkerwink, Austin, TX

The application deadline was May 11 and the announcements were supposed to be May 15. So I’m thinking…we all voted too late. Although I can still find only 8 winners. I stopped looking on page 3 when there were 0 supporters.

So….maybe round 2? I hope the votes carry over. And I wish they’d just remove the winners to make it easier to see the competition. I hope they don’t wipe the slate clean and make AKM apply again and all of us vote again.

AKM really needs to put a banner and link to the voting in the right link sidebar.

    #9 Shanthe Gonzales, Oakland, CA

    #10 Rick Cofer, Austin, TX

One set of rules says 10 winners each round, but the voting page says 9.

I’m thinking we may have to bypass Netroots altogether and create our own AKM scholarship fund direct.

  331. 334
    GramiamNo Gravatar says:

mlaiuppa, both are correct. In each round, the applicant with the most supporters is automatically in. The other nine are chosen by a combination of factors, only one of which is # of supporters. I suspect that AKMs application was not received by the deadline for round 1, so she is off to a great start for Round 2. Remember how far ahead of her everybody was when she put up the thread? I say we keep getting those #’s growing just to make sure that there is no doubt that she has the highest support of any blogger in the nation. It is far too soon to raise funds. Besides, as fast as we can do it, if it becomes necessary, we can raise it in a few days. LOL!
