Open Thread – NASA TV!
I think this is one of the greatest pictures ever taken. It was captured by the Hubble Telescope back in early 1995. It’s called “The Hubble Deep Field.” Yes, this is a picture of the night sky, but it’s much more than that. Scientists decided that they wanted to point the Hubble at a portion of the sky that looked unusually empty. They picked the dullest, most boring little spot, without much of anything that could be detected by Earth telescopes, and they decided to take a picture. So they pointed Hubble’s great eye at that little spot.
To get a sense of scale, do the following. Go find a penny, and hold it between your fingers at arm’s length. Make sure Lincoln is facing you. Then look at the size of Lincoln’s eyeball. That’s the size of the spot of night sky that Hubble looked at. And what you see above is what they found in that spot. Hundreds of galaxies and billions of stars, and a window into the formation of the early universe. This shot contains a small red dot, which is actually the farthest known thing in the universe. The light from that dot that hit the lens of the Hubble Telescope began its journey long before our Sun, or our solar system even existed.
No wonder people love the Hubble. Sitting here on our little blue dot, looking at that little red dot, and contemplating all that lies between gives us a sense of perspective, and a sense of awe that deflates the hubris to which our species is inclined.
Now, thanks to the crew of the Atlantis who upgraded the scope, Hubble’s eye, and thus the eye of humankind will be able to see farther than it ever has before.
Today the Space Shuttle and its weary crew return home. You can catch it live by tuning in to NASA TV!

Cool…I love the Hubble photos. I have the Eskimo Nebula poster on my fridge:)

I started out my academic life as a physics major and was going to become an astrophysicist, but fell in love with the earth when I took a geology course with a friend, and majored in geology instead.
But here’s a thing I’ve never figured out. Some of these stars in the picture look back nearly 11 billion years (if I remember correctly), and the light has traveled for 11 billion years toward us. But 11 billion years ago when the light started out, we (our region of the universe – the solar system didn’t exist) were a lot closer to those galaxies. So I can’t figure the geometry out – can’t figure out why the light didn’t pass us by as the light moved faster than we moved away from the galaxies, and why we can still see 11 billion years back in time. Any takers?
Aussie Blue Sky –
And I think of these verses from Psalm 8:
4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *
the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
5 What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
the son of man that you should seek him out?
And this passage from Job 38:
1: Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
2: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3: Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
4: “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
5: Who determined its measurements — surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?
6: On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,
7: when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Snoskred haz a sad.
Well sort of. You kinda wonder whether the astronauts are cheering about getting to stay in space longer!
The shuttle has officially been waved off from landing today due to bad weather. They will try again tomorrow, and in that case there are landing opportunities both in Florida and California.
I have to wonder if President Obama was channeling Sarah Palin while talking to the Astronauts –
President Obama: I do have to just, by the way, say, Captain, that you and Dr. Grunsfeld as Illinoisans, you know I’ve gotta give you a special shout out.
Atlantis: Well, thanks very much, my sister was just asking today to take a picture of Chicago as we went by. We were able to see it in the distance and take a picture so we can send that along as well.
President Obama: Outstanding. We’ll I’ve gotta get a copy of that picture. Maybe I … did you guys see my house? I’m trying to figure out if my lawn is getting mowed there. I haven’t been back for a couple of months.
Perhaps he should call Sarah. I am sure she can see his lawn from her house.
Aussie – I’m not on facebook, but it would almost be worth it to join this group. He is infuriating. nauseating. I had been so looking forward to getting rid of him. I saw a headline this morning that Bush says it’s “liberating” to be retired. No wonder – he’s out of Cheney’s grasp.
Thanks for the link. I’ll send it on to others.

Dear lemonfair;
You made my brain hurt. Between throbs of deep thinking pain, it dawned on me that none of the process was tidy. This just happens to be the one we can see. There were probably billions that went by several billion years ago when we were still babies. Since the shape isn’t a perfect circle, some still get to be seen since they’re traveling from a further spot in the misshapen universe. Or at least that’s the story I’m going with for now.
How do you think people read about this and then try to claim this all happened in 7 days — including the day of rest? And that it was, what, 5,000 years ago?

I might be a bit biased and hope for Edwards Air Force Base, just so the shuttle can fly across the country on the 747 thingy.. In case you haven’t seen it –
Link to see shuttle piggybacking on a 747
Oh, and I should alsomention – they have heaps of supplies and could hold out until Sunday or even Monday for the landing if they need to..
Seeing as the shuttle will be there for at least another 24 hours, if you don’t have any clouds in your sky why not see if there is a viewing opportunity as it flies over?
http://www.heavens-above.com/
Yeah it’s kinda neat to watch the shuttle piggyback on the 747. . .it’s also very very very expensive and dangerous. . . to the 747 crew and to the shuttle itself.
We always know when the shuttle returns home – the sonic booms shake rattle and roll the place. . . and invariably someone smiles and says “honey, I’m home!” Even the dogs aren’t freaked out by the booms anymore.

Yup – Just like I said – Rex had ‘em by the short hairs. There was too much dirt that would’ve come out at a trial. I hope Sherry gets the help she needs and stays on the straight and narrow. And gets to see her grandchild.
There’s some great shots on airliners.net of the shuttle Enterprise (the one that never flew in space and only did test gliding in the early years – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Enterprise – ) piggybacking to various airshows around the world in 1983..
Many shuttle and 747 pics
I don’t think it ever made it out here to Australia, but it certainly toured Europe by the look of things.
BJA – that’s another thing I can’t figure out – how people think the Bible is a science textbook. Makes me wonder if they ever actually read it.
Some have described the universe as like the surface of a balloon, rather than as a sphere, which we would intuitively think it was. On the surface of a balloon every point moves away from every other point as the balloon expands (you can try this with magic marker, but it probably works in your head, too).
So one of the things that makes my brain hurts is that space is created as the universe expands. What does the space expand in to if there’s no space. My little time-bound, space-bound head can’t deal with that.

I forgot to add this site, where you can actually contribute to science! The idea is that there are so many galaxies (duh) that it takes a lot of people to categorize them, and it turns out us ordinary people can do just as good a job as the professionals, if they take our answers in aggregate. OT, even for an open thread, but here is another title, using the K.I.S.S. principle, for Sarah’s upcoming book: “Duh!”
I am so hoping to be flying around the universe after I die. There is such a big lovely world out there! I am not religious but I am in awe of mother nature and I believe that love is the creative energy of the universe and that, as Kurt Vonnegut said, music is all the evidence we have of God. I mention music because the universe has music. Black holes give off a very low B flat.
It is photos like this and contemplating the universe that convinces me that the fundie version of God, the vengeful, petty, “choose the right religion or go to hell” just cannot be true. Thinking like that makes the creator of this lovely universe into a petty tyrant.
lilybart—you and i share similar belief systems. we live in a universe that can not be codified by anyone and to allow ones self to persuaded to religious norms cheapens and leads us along paths to madness and delusion…b
When you ponder on the infinity of the infinite infinite-yes, our very finite brains aren’t really up to the task-you might wonder, “why would the Creator be so obsessed with gays, on our puny tiny little speck of a planet”?

We in the Tucson area secretly hope for California shuttle landings. While carrying the weight of the shuttle, the 747 is forced to carry a light fuel load, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson is their first refueling stop. Twice I’ve gotten to see the shuttle piggy-backing, and it’s an amazing sight. If a California landing happens, I’ll be camera-ready for the return flight to FL.

A magnificent picture, the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field is. It is, without a doubt one of the most scientifically important observations that we’ve made. One of my professors from this past semester has done a lot of work on large-scale cosmology with Hubble and is helping with the development of the James Webb Space Telescope that’s replacing it in a few years.
This picture is not, however, the Hubble Deep Field, as I noted above. It is the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (in the constellation Fornax). This picture had 11 days worth of exposure and we can see about 13BLY into the past. There are to Hubble Deep Fields, the Northern (in Ursa Major) and Southern (in Tucana) Deep Fields that both look back between 10-12BLY.

the answer is: light-years is not the same as time
The Hubble Space Telescope can see out to a distance of several billions of light-years. A light-year is the distance that light travels in 1 year. Since light has a speed of 186,000 miles per second (light can travel about 7 times around the entire earth in 1 second!), light travels about 5,865,696,000,000 miles in just one year. You can attach 9 more zeros to the end of this to get 1 billion light-years and another one for 10 billion light-years. The farthest that Hubble has seen so far is about 10-15 billion light-years away. The farthest area looked at is called the Hubble Deep Field.
Cheney had his puppet on CNN Anderson Cooper last night. IMO Cheney himself seems to have freely discussed far too much with regard to intelligence/security and memos and briefings with her just by the way she talks. I would think that’s illegal.
As much as I don’t like Cooper as his “keeping them honest” is bullcrap (he never follows up – it’s just as story), I found Liz very condescending.

As others have said that composite photo is actually the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) taken in 2003-2004 – not the Hubble Deep Field taken in 1995.
The photo is WAY MORE impressive than you may think. There are just a few stars from our galaxy in the pic. You are looking at about 10,000 GALAXIES! And this is just a random speck of the darkest most empty sky. It would take 50 of these photos just to cover up the moon.
So, 10,000 galaxies each with 100,000,000,000 or more stars and who knows how many planets… the mind reels!
The universe is not only stranger than we imagine but also stranger than we CAN imagine.
I love the Hubble.
I visit astronomy picture of the day ever once in a while, then play catch-up from my last visit.
I’ve got a series of 5 photos of V838Mon that I use as a slide show desktop picture. Shows it expanding and dissipating. Love it.
What I love most about astronomy picture of the day is the descriptions, written by actual scientists and the links provided in the text. And you know these guys have a sense of humor.
I’m glad they’ve repaired Hubble and given it a little more time. We’ve certainly gotten our money’s worth and it has certainly lived a long and fruitful life. I will be sad when it is finally laid to rest.
I truly hope there are plans in the works now to replace it with Hubble II, bigger, better, longer lasting.
We shouldn’t have to justify the dollars and cents of a quest for knowledge.

But there is no information about when that red spot (red dwarf?) was formed. There was no matter at the Big Bang only energy, not even photons. I believe. So the red star, as did all matter, formed at some time later.
The energy of the original blast has had to decrease in order for mass to form to the red dot star; though probably much older than our solar system, it would not have been born at the Big Bang.
There is nothing, I believe, in the epicenter of the Big Bang, just radio waves that still echo around the universe.
Canadian Neighbour–Awww, those are cute. I esp. love photo #6; the look on that cub’s face as it’s lifted out of the basket for weighing is priceless!
I have to wonder after reading Les Gara’ statement – if Sarah assumed that the legislature (without really checking it out) would over ride her veto, and is now stuck with her nasty minded veto.
If she assumed they could legally override and then didn’t she could try to pass all the negative PR on to them. Either way she gets her RepoTaliban merit points.
At at guess, that’s the game she’s playing and once again has been caught out not knowing Alaska’s laws and regulations and not caring enough to find out.

- Good for you! Read, Read, Read! The best Vitamin D I have found is in drop form. (Also, get some sun! – without chemical coating your body in sunscreen) You can probably get it at any naturalpathic clinic or online. Biotics research is the one I use. Remember not all supplements are created equal. It’s like anything else. There is good quality and bad quality. Some work better than others. The best are are from natural sources not synthetic. i think when we put synthetic/manmade stuff on/in our bodies it is nothing more than pollution that our bodies than have to deal with.
Ripley – have you looked into systemic enzyme therapy? I don’t know a lot about hypothyroidism (though I keep mine monitored as a lot of my problems seem to relate) This is my latest area of research and amazement. I think thyroid people are Amylase deficient? Enzymes have done wonders for me (I have bad bad Lyme).
Anyway, I just wanted to put that out there without hopefully getting to soap boxy! I have found that by reading others experiences and what works/ doesn’t work and then researching has been the best tool.

Remember, we are all made out of Stardust, and to the Stars we will return one day.
Blessings to All.

I have Hasimoto’s Disease (hypothyroidism), Fibromyalgia, and chemical sensitivities–Vitamin D is awesome; if you can’t take the drops, make sure your supplement is D3. Read, read is right- I spread my Vitamin D out over the day, as 400mg is all you can absorb at one time. At night: Calcium/Magnesium/D- really helps. I also suggest trying an elimination diet. Not fun for the first 10-14 days (stayed away from knives in the kitchen, heh heh), but I discovered no sugar, yeast, and wheat really helps.
I heart the Hubble; the photos are awe-inspiring.

This was an awe-inspiring post, here’s what I wrote about it on my blog:
Thank you Mudflats for a wonderful blog that reminds me of how puny we are, and how glorious and vast the universe.
http://www.themudflats.net/2009/05/22/open-thread-nasa-tv/
It is so enormous, there must be other planets with more intelligent life forms, and that gives me comfort.
I have come across many people who talk about their discovery of the drastically different future we have assured with our reckless squandering of fuel. It seems universal that we feel like we are living in a parallel universe with all those who surround us that remain oblivious. I have even read comments from people whose spouse is a denier, which must be especially painful.
I have been thinking a lot lately about the inexorable nature of extinction and the very real possibility that we have already assured the destruction of a habitable environment – not just for trees but eventually, us too. Reading the geological history of prior extinctions as recounted in “With Fear and Violence” has been quite useful in helping me to put this 6th Great Extinction in perspective.
For me there have been two major components to the process of realizing the inevitability of ecosystem collapse. The first concern is the almost certain breakdown of civilized society and a culture that is governed by laws. Even if it does not happen soon – and I think we are close to a tipping point – it will definitely happen in my children’s lifetime. And I am helpless to spare them the ravages, deprevations and dislocations and quite likely, violence that will ensue.
The second concern is the soul-crushing notion that all the beauty that humans have created, all the art, music, theater, dance, will be lost forever.
Of course, think of all the beautiful flora and fauna that humans have driven to extinction and perhaps it’s only fair.

Here is an op-ed in todays NYT that mentions Bristol and Meghan McCain.

I read that link to the huffington post about the son, wow. I hope my son doesnt still live with us. He told me , he wont move out till hes like 40. I hope not. But, I hope he at least goes to college.
That is really amazing, the pictures of the stars! We dont see stars as bright down here in Washington. I know, in Southeast, its always breathtaking to see the stars.
To those who are taking vitamin D supplements. Please be careful. Excessive amounts are stored in the body and can be fatal. Be sure to check with your physician on your dosages to be sure you are doing it right. I happen to have a PhD in nutrition and am a Registered Dietitian, so I hear alarm bells when people self medicate with fat soluble vitamins.
so I wonder if all the previous talk about Bristol “working her butt off going to school and parenting” way back when Levi lost his job was all preparation for the people magazine article and the gretta interview conveniently was “supposed” to lead up to the Candi spokesperson.
People magazine has Bristol in her grad gown, holding her baby and in the article speaking of how hard she’s working to parent and supply the baby’s needs.
What next, after they build up Bristol’s celeb image will she also, too, write a book? lol, it wouldn’t surpise me that this is part of their unfolding “plan”.
I would also assume they’re trying to “hide” any big money Bristol is making because wouldn’t she get less child support from Levi if she made more than he? or even have to pay him child support? (I don’t have any experience with it myself, so I have no clue).
I just get the sense they are doing all they can to “make it up” to Bristol for using her pregnancy during the campaign and throwing her into the media eye. So I look for “Gods” unfolding plan in Bristol’s life, which is really Meg and Scarah and whoever plotting in the background, they are very good plotters.
It also makes me wonder if the break up with Levi wasn’t encouraged to happen. Hey, Scarah didn’t win VP so it’s safe to dump Levi, his mother’s drug troubled tie, she can’t be called mother in law and Mercede who Bristol doesn’t like anyway.
It all has a weird planned out PR feel to it.
The baby is born
They break up

People Mag exclusives

More People Mag exclusive
All of a sudden she has a team of lawyers
What next a publicist?
Public speeches across the nation, youth group gigs?
Her own column in teen mags? lol
I do believe there is more to come in this little campaign to create a career and bring about financial support for Bristol. You know dang well Scarah doesn’t intend to support her, which is right, but it’s weird how all this is craftily spun and planned, I suppose who ever is the think tank behind this is doing it for free?
Did anyone see that post by Greg Mitchell on HuffPo about the woman who will “collaborate” with Scarah on her memoir? Apparently she has also co-written a book called Donkey Cons with a guy who belonged to a white supremacy group. So now Scarah is “pallin around with domestic terrorist” types also too!

Speaking of whiny, spineless GOP ‘ talking mouths’… did everyone see the story on HuffPo that Glenn Beck once he made it back to the safety of his dungeon/studio he found the nerve to speak up..?
He wants an apology from The View.

@lemonfair: Why didn’t the light already pass us?
————–
Very crude explanation follows: Hubble’s Law says that the speed at which distant astronomical objects appear to move away from us (and us from them) is proportional to their distance from us. As someone above observed, the way to visualize this in two dimensions is to put some dots on a balloon, and then blow it up at a constant rate. All the dots move apart from each other, and the dots that are further apart (as measured on the surface of the balloon) move apart faster.
Now, the tricky bit here is that the dots aren’t actually moving with respect to the surface of the balloon. They are painted on, after all. What is happening is that new space (balloon surface) is appearing between the dots. Now, all you have to do is visualize this as happening to our three-dimensional universe as a hyper-surface on an expanding hyperspherical balloon. (That’s a joke. Nobody can visualize that, but you can write math to express it).
As it happens, the expansion rate of the universe is such that things that are very far away from us are getting farther away at almost the speed of light. Remember, this is because space is being added between us. So, think about that object that is 11 billion light years away. 10 billion years ago, maybe it was 2 billion LY away, and some light started out towards us at, of course, the speed of light. But the distance between us increased at almost the speed of light, because of the creation of new space, so the light is only now reaching us. Visualize the dots on the balloon, and something (light) moving between them at a speed (referred to the balloon surface) that is just slightly faster than the rate at which balloon surface distance appears between them.
As I said, this is a very crude picture. BTW, Hubble’s Law was proposed in 1929, by Edwin Hubble, and was pretty much the first cosmological concept of the modern era. Hubble was able to make distance estimates of galaxies because of about twenty years of prior work by Henrietta Swan Levitt, who doesn’t have any telescopes named after her.

Say no to Palin: You say it’s right that Palin not support Bristol, but I disagree.
It is Sarah’s fault that Bristol was brought up to pretend she won’t have sex, not get birth control because that would be admitting intent, and then doing it anyway.
I hold Sarah Liable for this and she owes her.
Strangelet – Thanks for the great explanation. makes sense to me (it was I who offered the balloon analogy, but I didn’t put the rest of it together). I’ve wondered if space didn’t expand at greater than the speed of light initially, as the size of the universe at a fraction of a second is much greater than 186,000miles. So I wasn’t sure if space was expanding at a greater speed, or if the big bang involved some simultaneous creation over a greater area than the unit point of a big bang as it’s sometimes presented. (Those physics classes were a very, very long time ago).
So what’s the explanation for the initial size of the cosmos so soon after the big bang?
bubbles aka grasshopper,
I was less than 6 months away from a wheel chair (arthritis) when I discovered something called “CMO” (Cetyl Myristoleate – sp?). Sooo much improvement, no wheelchair for me, no sirree! Google it! Really.

Well, yeah. That’s why I mentioned it. I want to be clear that I’m not dissing Hubble. He (and his team) did years of observations, and Hubble’s Law was more than a little controversial when first proposed. They used Levitt’s discovery of the periodicity-brightness relation of Cepheid variables to estimate galactic distances, but that is how science works.
Unfortunately, another way science worked before (at least) the latter part of the 20th century is if you were a female scientist not named Marie Curie, nobody’s ever heard of you.

What’s this about hypothyroidism and vitamin D? I’ve taken synthroid for 15 years or so, and have have had SAD since I was 12 or so. Have tried Rx antidepressants and St. Johnswort for it, but this last winter took vitamin D, and it revolutionized my life. My doctor says she used to work for a guy who thought vitamin D was the answer to everything. But I didn’t realize there was a connection to the hypothyroidism.
My naturapath thought some neurological symptoms were Mg deficiency, though that seems not to have been entirely the case.

Yeah…. it was nothing personal against the poor sea urchin…. but the analogy seemed to fit.
And I would never compare Beck to a snake. I ‘love’ snakes. As a kid growing up in So. Florida ,before it got developed, we could catch and collect our own ‘pets’ for free. we caught them all. Garter snakes, ribbon snakes, water snakes, black racers, corn snakes, tiny little ring necks (no more than 6 inches long) and my favorite a Yellow Rat Snake (about 3 foot long) that was the same vibrant yellow as as AKM’s mudboots. Being a boa constrictor he would just wrap around your arm and you could ride your bike all over town. Seeing as he never moved… many people wouldn’t notice till they got reeeeeeal close.
Kept them all in a big long looking coffin shaped box that sat along the side of the house.
I’m sure my Mom loved it too.

Vitamin D3 is what my endocrinologist proscribes and prescribes. He’s the top in his field: other endocrinologists go to HIM. He’s well versed in all things and very much ahead of the curve for new stuff. SAD will be affected positively by proper D3 supplementation. The current blood tests are inaccurate, but at least they tell you if your levels are going up or down. They ALWAYS go down in the winter if you don’t live in the tropics. I’m on 4000mg a day in the winter and 2000 mg a day when the days lengthen. The research is catching up with this line of thinking. Finally. And they are finally bringing down the TSH “normal” value after years of too high being ok. If I’m above 1.5 on my TSH, I feel rotten. My thyroid kicks in once in a while and then I’m too low. But I regulate my medication with monthly bloodwork! I hate it, but it helps keep track. There is new information about Mg and Calcuim together, too. Mostly, there is new stuff coming out all the time. Read. Educate yourself so that when you see the doctor, you can have intelligent conversation about your health. Never self-medicate, especially with a diagnosed condition. BUT, if you’re not happy with your doc, then change. Find someone who is learning the new stuff. Avoid the ones stuck in what they “know”. Because more and more, it’s what they “KNEW”.

Aha! You have discovered “inflation”. This supposes that for some relatively short period after the Big Bang, space did expand very, very rapidly, such that things got farther apart as if they were moving much, much faster than the speed of light. Even though, strictly speaking, they weren’t exactly “moving”.
Something like inflation is needed to explain the observed uniformity of the “cosmic microwave background radiation”. It turns out that wherever you point a radiotelescope, it detects (among other things) a background level of radiation in the microwave range that is believed to be the very first radiation in the universe the leftovers of the Big Bang). It’s microwaves when it reaches us because the source is receding at very near the speed of light, so the radiation is shifted down in frequency by the Doppler effect (why the train whistle going away goes down in tone).
Problem: the background is extremely uniform — it looks exactly the same everywhere in the sky. If space has been expanding uniformly since the big bang, parts of it are farther apart from each other than the distance that light could have crossed during the time since the BB. These parts can’t have “communicated” with each other, so they should have evolved separately, and the CMB shouldn’t be homogeneous.
Possible solution: “Inflation”. At the BB, everything is in the same place, so homogeneous. For a while, space expands at an even more inconceivable rate than the speed of light — inflation. At the end of the inflationary period, the universe is already pretty big, and parts of it will never be able to communicate with other parts, but it is still very homogeneous because not enough time has elapsed for the different bits to evolve separately. The radiation from that period, just after inflation, is what we see as the CMB.
Further problems: well, there are some, but let’s not go there right now.

Strangelet –
This has been great fun, and I haven’t ever had an easily understood answer to these questions before. Just one more, if you can stand it.
How good is the “balloon” analogy, in this respect: If my universe is like the skin of a balloon then there are dots on the opposite side of the balloon I can’t see from my dot, because of the curvature of the balloon – whereas that wouldn’t be a problem if we were all inside a sphere. Is that a compounding issue, or do we have access in all directions to information that isn’t too “far” away from us in the way you mentioned above. (Or is this why it’s too far away from us)
Ripley: Are you sure you are taking 2000 to 4000 mg of Vitamin D daily? 25 micrograms is considered toxic and requires close monitoring. Perhaps you are taking 2000 to 4000 IU daily. Check your label.
Bubbles – I don’t see an endocrinologist, just my internist. She generally sends me to specialists at the drop of a hat, but hasn’t ever seen the need to send me to an endocrinologist. (But it was the neurologist who sent me to a naturopath!) I just started getting acute vertigo a couple of months ago and am waiting to see a specialist for that, too – so let me know if you know there’s a connection there. That would be a big surprise.

@lemonfair: When you are doing the balloon analogy, you have to remember that the two dimensional surface of the balloon IS your two dimensional space. (You are a really flat two-dimensional person on the surface).
So light, and anything else, moves on the surface, and you can see the “other side” of the balloon — draw a line on the surface of the balloon, that’s how the light goes. Except, of course, that the balloon is too big for light to have gotten here yet, but that’s a detail.
This of course leads to the idea that if you had a big enough telescope, you could see the back of your own head. That’s not quite true, since light only moves at the speed of light. Possibly, if someone is standing in the same spot with a big enough telescope 25 or 30 billion years from now, they will be able to see the back of your head as it is now. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Re: Waterboarding Mancow.
Mancow used to be on the air here in the Bay Area, and as I recall — never actually having listened to him — he was mostly a rude-boy Howard Stern wannabe at the time, rather than a “right-wing” jock.
I wanna see a real winger do it (hello, Sean; hello, Glenn — is Mancow braver than you).
Watched the Mancow video, but still holding out for Hannity. Done by Jesse Ventura.
I saw an endocrinologist. Who then told me natural thyroid was unreliable, yadda yadda, doesn’t prescribe it, blah blah.

While it is true that Crick and Watson basically stole Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray crystallographic work to come up with the double-helix, her contribution is actually pretty well known. ROFL Canadian Neighbour (remembering “u” lol)
Why, thank you for noticing… I’ve been studying obfuscation from hubby and from SP’s speeches (not!)
It is possible (I think – and only barely) to follow that sentence, but it’s so not worth the effort!
Hey, glad it brought some giggles to your day, we need all of those we can get, eh?
Nan
I haven’t had a chance to read yet all these comments….has anyone seen the inside pictures & quotes of Bristol’s, People Magazine exclusive?
DAYMN, they hate Palin!!!!
The only picture of her is a profile adjusting Bristol’s, graduation cap & gown. Looking, haggard, old, with four chins and way to much clown make up. The inside story, Bristol, says her FATHER is the one who taught her how to swaddle a baby & babysits (Hilariously this quote is right after Palin claims she sits listening to the baby scream at night & holding herself back from “Rescuing”, Bristol.) Then there is a subtle disclaimer Bristol, claims her GPA is 2 points from honors of a 4.0 but that it is not verified.
I am loving the pictures of Bristol on the floor carefree watching television holding Tripp, while, Todd, is on the chair behind her holding, Trigg and they are smiling/laughing. Hard life much? Do not think so. This tabloid stunt is so backfiring. I asked someone what they thought of the spread while in line at Safeway. The lady said despicable flaunting.
re: dress………No offense UK Lady , but don’t the gal’s wear stuff like that at the horse races in England ??
austintx,
Just think, there is some bozo designed making mega bucks for that as it is Cindy McCain who prances around in multi thousand $$$ dresses. You can be sure there is no clothing with the label from the online store Michelle Obama shops at — which outfits I like what Michelle has worn!!
I became attached to this blog, not only because of akm’s writing styles, the comments, but the Categories: eyerollery, numbskullery, and tomfoollery. lol. I love those categories, they crack me up every time, and I look forward everyday to see what categories are used.
Brava AKM!!!
Hmmm, and you thought AK had some of the looniest GOP’ers. Take a read of this guy from GA (yeah…my personal NON-redneck area of the woods).

Lawmaker wants to make 2010 ‘Year of the Bible’
When the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, 2009, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) hopes you’ll be ringing in “the Year of the Bible.”
It’s probably just wishful thinking.
Broun’s simple congressional resolution aimed at honoring the Good Book has produced a push-back of biblical proportion in the blogosphere, with critics dismissing it as either unconstitutional or a waste of time. Jews in Congress and atheist activists are dismissing the resolution, while none of the many Democrats in Congress who are Christian have bothered to sign on as co-sponsors.
119 honestyinGov Says: May 22nd, 2009 at 1:50 PM
…year of the Bible.
Whoops, I see someone already did a post on this Broun fellow, but didn’t link to the full Politico article, just the HP short article with comments…
A caution to everyone involved in the medical/vitamin D/thyroid discussions.
Before you do anything, please have your dr. run these 2 blood tests:
cortisol (stress levels) and A1C (diabetes).
Trust me on this….my cortisol stress level created havoc with my entire endocrine system (which includes not only the thyroid, but also the pancreas and adrenal glands), and after receiving synthroid to elevate my thyroid function, it turns out that that medicine did far more harm than good. While my body was demanding a reduction in stress and an increase in rest, the synthroid was trying to perk me up thru an increased in thyroid function. B-A-D N-E-W-S!
It was only after passing out while driving (no one was hurt, not even my CRV – don’t ask me how that was avoided!), that someone decided to run those 2 tests after listening to what I was saying on behalf of my body.
Have had 3 years of my life disrupted because something that should have been done upfront but wasn’t – cortisol & A1C – could have helped resolve my problem. The stress has gone away (of course, quitting the job that led to the stress problems did help significantly), and my A1C has dropped down low enough that I no longer am on an active watch for diabetes (was diagnosed as pre-diabetic).
Get those tests done. Even if you don’t think you have stress, stress factors are hammering away at you.
Good luck!
I just wanted to say what a great picture and comment posted. It inspired me to go to the internets tonight and find all kinds of beautiful pictures and informative “stuff”. I love this site. You never know where it might send your curiosity and sense of adventure. That picture is mind blowing both in beauty and introspection.
pepperzmom- thank you. yes i will be very careful. will see an endocrinologist before i take any action. i wouldn’t want to skew blood tests by self medicating….much love..b
@UKLady:
Sort of a late reply, but if you see this — I’m not surprised if Mancow insisted waterboarding wasn’t torture, because that would be in line with his anti-PC shtick. I’m also not surprised that he went through with it, because he also showed “Jackass” tendencies.
I just don’t want the winger-media to be able to claim that one of them got waterboarded. I wanna see Hannity and Beck and Limbo.
Hell, I’ll be gender-neutral: waterboard Malkin and Coulter and get their reaction.
BTW, I appreciate the sub-thread on thyroid/Vitamin D/cortisol/etc.
I, too, have autoimmune hypothyroidism (well, really zero-thyroidism). I’ve just been taking my levothyroxine for fifteen years or so. I had no idea there were so many potential interactions. I did start 1000 IU of D during the winter a couple of years ago (being that I’m reluctantly turning into a senior citizen).
After reading these comments, I plan to do a bit of research before my next physical. I like to give my doc a surprise question when I can, although I have to admit that so far he’s been able to demonstrate that he already knew about my concern and explain why it didn’t actually apply to me. Actually, I think he looks forward to it.
Hey, when you’re old you take what entertainment you can get.
As I have posted, please see a doctor if you have any questions. There is new information coming out all the time, and the link someone posted to Harvard is right on track. Especially the stuff in the box to the right.
A good endocrinologist will check cortisol levels as a matter of course (adrenal function), as well as the proper function of the parathyroid glands. They will also send you to an ultrasound specialist, one who reads the thyroid with precision. Not just the tech at the local hospital. A good doctor will rule out all things. They will also have you get the bloodtest for the antibodies your body might be producing against your own thyroid. To see if it’s autoimmune. There is no reason for people to be in the dark here. Read. Read, then read some more. The internet is at your disposal. Be cautious, however, and don’t scare yourself into thinking that you have every disease they talk about! Just know what tests exist and what changes you can make in your lifestyle to improve your health. I can tell you from experience that changing to a more vegetarian diet can change your life. There is not one cure-all for Thyroid disease. But it is very interesting that it is becoming nearly epidemic. Makes me wonder what we are doing to ourselves that is causing our collective thyroids to fail. I blame fast food, too many x-rays (ie: dental), and processed food. But that’s just my opinion, so I avoid as many of them as I can.
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/vitamin-d/
for those who missed it.
Ripley, as you probably already know, there is significant interest in the role that low Vitamin D status might play in autoimmune diseases, as well as cancer. There is also some evidence that low Vitamin D status might be the result of these conditions rather than the cause, and D supplements might exacerbate them. Thus far, I think the body of evidence supports the first premise. Only time and corroborating research will tell.
I think that the role of diet in these diseases (and many others) will continue to be elucidated as we go forward. Sometimes it is hard for people to grasp that something seemingly as simple as good nutrition, or lack thereof, may play a significant role in our health.
I posted that link to the Harvard site because I like their no-nonsense approach to nutrition and other health issues. I also like the fact that they do not buy into the USDA Food Pyramid Guide, and like Marion Nestle of New York University, they clearly state the reasons they find fault with the pyramid.
Well said Ripley – Thanks!
I’ll second that! What we eat is of utmost importance for our health. We’re all different but I can say that 15 years ago I would have laughed at you if you told me that one day I would be advocating for a mostly raw/vegetarian lifestyle! I would just love it if when people went to the doctor the first part of any treatment would be with a nutritionist (I’m not one – I just think it’s that important) The complexities of vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, minerals and all that stuff is amazing! My opinion is that if things go wrong in our bodies somewhere along the line it has to do with what we have or have not put in our bodies (from nutrients to toxic chemicals). We need to do all we can to help it heal and keep ourselves healthy (and yes to me that means includung the occasional “indulgences”!) Best Advice – Read, Read, Read!!! Is everyone getting tired of hearing that yet?
My motto – read it somewhere and I don’t know who to atribute it to- If you don’t take care if your body where else are you going to live!
Nan – Thanks! CMO looks very promising – still reading, though!
Good point TBNT Judy!
I’m getting dangerously close to the soap box so I’ll back away now!
@QuiltAK, Thanks! You probably cannot tell that I am standing on my box
In relation to the original topic of this post. I have a daughter (11) who is an absolute space nut! I think it is absolutely amazing and beautiful and it reminds of how complex everything is. But you lose me when you start talking about all the physics and stuff. The night before this post we were watching the Universe and talking about Hubble. I got to witness a lightbulb go off in her head. She never had an interest to grow up and be an Astronaut or Astronomer (she was going to be a pastry chef). During our conversation I (without realizing it) mentioned the magic word – Astrophysicist! The past few days have been nothing but “Mom, I just don’t know if I should be an astrophycist or pastry chef!” Of course, the correct answer is you’ve got a lot of time yet to explore your options and be what you want to be. But to her this is pressing! Forgive me a little parental bragging but since she is already doing high school algebra (quadratic equations are really, really fun, mom!) I think she could really do it and love it. But she’s got lots of time. Anyway, it’s just a lot of fun to watch her be so excited! She was going to set her alarm and watch the landing. She’s not up yet so I don’t know if she did or not but I’m sure I’m probably in for another day of pulsar and quasar discussions and endless space facts!
TBNTJudy,
LOL. They’re good boxes to be on though! at least I think!
QuiltAK, what a great post about your daughter. Imagine the possibilities: pastry chef….astrophysicist. I think she could be the astrophysicist and in her spare time, she could make pastries for YOU, mom!
I really have enjoyed the discussions about the physics, but my understanding is just rudimentary. Since my little brain seems to be finite, it is quite hard to get my mind around the concept of the universe as something expanding into nothing.
“Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy”
Albert Einstein
TBNTJudy,
Thanks! Love the Einstein quote. Almost makes my head hurt!
