Open Thread – Forget Me Not

forgetmenot

It’s that time of year, and the official state flower of Alaska is in bloom.  Here is the humble, but beautiful forget-me-not.  It was officially adopted way back in 1917 by the Territorial Legislature.  They are blooming a bit early this year.

We were staying at a hotel last week, which provides lots of little perks, like water in the lobby. The first day they had cucumber/mint. Slices of cucumbers with sprigs of mint, ice, water, deliciously refreshing. Next day, Orange with candied ginger.

Thought I would share. As the heat is starting up maybe others can share favorite beverages for the summer!?!

BTW, we got an outrageously good price on a waterfront room in Portland, Oregon with Marriott. We had stayed with them for several months in Alaska. Really, like the chain. Our room, was only $79. Still amazing deals.

The subtle color variation is beautiful.

Completely frustrating to me. Pet peeve. State calendars of scenic land with pictures taken that have been chopped or blocked so when you go to find the scene you end up with a little bit of beauty, surrounded by a bunch of power lines or some other distraction.

The funny thing is that she said in the press release that the armistice ‘ended’ the war… Ohhh not quite right.. its been a simmering truce for over 50 years. They failed to get a peace treaty. Tensions at the DMZ is still pretty high…

I didn’t realize the Forget-Me-Not was the state flower of Alaska. Here in Northwestern Washington they are beautiful along the highways, but a WEED in home gardens. Every Spring I let them bloom because they are pretty. Then I pull them before they go to seed. That leaves just the right number already seeded for the next year. Otherwise they take over the place. (There is one of us negative folks in every group–right?)

Have you heard about the new suggestion for stimulus money for green energy construction? Mother Jones has an excellent article about architect Ed Mazria’s proposal to aid homeowners and governments with green construction using stimulus money. Mazria has vetted the plan with banks and spoken to Teamsters who were enthusiastic about jobs in construction.

From the article in Mother Jones:

“Mazria was in Washington, D.C., last week pitching his plan to senators, administration officials, and perhaps more importantly, to a luncheon crowd of about 250 mayors, council members, and county commissioners at a national climate change summit hosted by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).”

“Since late March, state and local officials have scrambled to secure their share of $6.3 billion in energy-efficiency grants offered by the federal stimulus package. (They have until June 25 to apply to the Department of Energy, which decides who gets what.) The politicians were riveted by Mazria’s talk, says Michelle Wyman, ICLEI’s executive director. They even stopped eating to pay closer attention, and when Mazria finished his spiel, they gave him standing ovation.”

    http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2009/05/what-one-stimulus-buck-could-do

gmoke at Daily Kos writes that a contact of his says Mazria has a presentation he can give to interested organizations. Daily Kos post

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/29/19558/9238

I don’t know if GINO’s rejection of the energy section of stimulus money would affect this or if these are separate grants. I was thinking of Eagle and other Alaskan communities that might benefit, as well as homeowners.

If you know any legislators or organizations that might be interested, please pass it on. The deadline June 25 deadline to apply is coming up soon, but there is time.

“I see your bet. And I raise your crazy-ass hobgoblin with our crazy-ass wicked ice witch!” Sarah then comes out and cackles while Fred Armisen cowers and then runs away.

    Now, to get serious.

Sarah, this is not a Yu-gi-oh or Pokemon game!

Last I heard, all public officials are supposed to coordinate with the Office of the President in advance of making statements that can be construed by other governments (especially crazy-ass rogue nations) as official foreign policy statements of the US Government.

Mr. Obama should send her a public message demanding she stand down. I am sure Mr. Obama would kindly explain that Hillary is Sec. of State, not Sarah, since she doesn’t seem to understand how things are organized.

There should be consequences if Sarah doesn’t stand down. We voted NOT to have her make any National Security decisions and the timing of this statement of hers is way out of line. Perhaps she’d like to remodel a new office in Leavenworth?

Thank you everyone for sharing your beautiful images of your state flowers. What incredible diversity – just like all of us here really.

I don’t know something special is stirred within when I see our state flower. For me it is a sense of pride, or ownership, or belonging – all of those really. So this is my state flower. It is very difficult to cultivate in the garden, but simply beautiful in the wild. The flower is the waratah, and here is the link to take a look at it (just scroll down the right hand side: http://www.waratahsoftware.com.au

I consider it a beautiful and benign weed, don’t you? If you want to get rid of it, it’s pretty easy. Now take the other Alaskan weeds, and pulling your hair out is easier than getting them out! I finally agreed to live with some plantain, though since it has wonderful healing properties.

Thanks for the tip. I read it and how bizarre. The other day I went to her twitter and wondered how far apart all those places were that she was signing those bills. I thought that all she does is race around and hop out of the SUV. Obviously not at the tea party.

Yea, she reminds me of someone running for president of the student council in high school. Shows up, doesn’t participate and then blows her own horn on being there and how great it was. Pathetic.

I agree, weeds are in the mind of the beholder. I don’t believe that any plant so beautiful could be regarded as a “weed”. Heck, I don’t think anything as a “weed”. Plants are what they are. Beautiful. I hike every morning with my dog and all the wild stuff is in bloom and the delicate little flowers on the “weeds” are so incredibly beautiful. I am always in awe of nature in the spring.

Austin…I know! That is why I said she is such a phony. She probably said hi to the organizer from the car and then sped off and did a twit or tweet, not sure of the right word. It is so laughable. So sad that she made Piper get out and be there. I would not subject my 9 year old daughter to that kind of thing.

When you go to Portland, you should be sure to check out the the “Smallest Park in the World”, Mill Ends Park. Not far from many other attractions & quick stop, but at least you can say you’ve ‘been there’. Whimsical and fun, they used to have a Leprechaun’s ferris wheel (delivered by a full sized crane).

Injuneau, we have plantain here but it is thinner leafs, I don’t know what they look like there and I missed Martha UYS post somehow. Here is a pic and some info Its usually used for skin stuff. (this is the broadleaf one)
