Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread

I haven’t mentioned it until now, but I enjoyed attending the Democratic fundraiser last week over at Cafe del Mundo.  There were lots of people in attendence, and great fun was had by all.  I got some nice shots to add to the “Brian the Moose Wall of Fame.”  I’ll post them up here as I have an opportunity, and copy them over in the gallery. Love those pictures of Brian with friends. He should throw in his antlers as nominee for Governor 2010.

Just a thought. This past week, several tragedies in the news. Two soldiers, I believe, and the abortion doctor. Gov P. quickly makes a PAC statement. I can’t understand the lack of discretion of doing that when the victim’s families haven’t even yet buried their loved ones. Shouldn’t she wait until the grieving is over? She tends to jump in with her “voice” for her base, but uses no thought of the community nor family members during this grieving time. Seems she’s so eager to show off her journalistic political points no matter what. Do Alaskans want to be representative of their Governor’s points of view on these matters, when the dead are barely cold?

This is too good not to share:

I belong to a “knitter’s group” (ravelry-dot-com) and when I went to the home page the other day I got a real jolt when I saw the news about who they were adding to the staff (they’d asked for applications a couple of weeks earler).

“We are pleased to announce the newest addition to our little team!

    …drum roll please…

    onestitchshort Sarah!”

No, not *that* Sarah! “onestitchshort” is simply her screen name.

But it was definitely a jolt to see!

Although in the photo, his antlers look a little bit off-kilter. Is he partying perhaps a little too energetically or is it that he’s at an unfortunate angle in the photo?

Either way, it’s always nice to see Brian. lol

Administration to Reveal Plans for Katrina Housing Transition

The Obama administration will announce plans today to virtually give away roughly 1,800 mobile homes to 3,400 families displaced by Hurricane Katrina who are living in government-provided housing along the Gulf Coast, officials said

The administration also will make available $50 million in rental vouchers to income-eligible trailer occupants who move to targeted housing projects, and take over from Louisiana the job of helping residents find permanent homes, said a senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity before the formal announcement.

“We knew we needed to bring this program to a close,” the official said. “We also want to ensure a humane and secure transition for all of them.”

“She also criticized Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the ranking Republican on the committee, who questioned McChrystal on Tuesday, for “playing dumb” by not following up on McChrystal’s explanation.

“If the Army chain of command didn’t know what happened to Pat, why did it present us with a false story” at the memorial service? Tillman asked. “That is not an error; that is not a misstep; that is deliberate deception. McCain was at Pat’s service. He was read a false narrative like the rest of us. Where is his outrage? Did he know all along?”

Investigations by the Army’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Defense Department’s inspector general concluded that officers in Tillman’s chain of command knew almost immediately that he had been killed by fire from his own platoon. That information, however, was withheld from his family for more than a month, in violation of Army regulations.

First things first: Lynnrockets is the master of song parody, no question about it. But in deference to Lynnrockets, and inspired by the winning book title, “My Book about Me”, I would like to offer another song, this one sung to the tune of “It Ain’t Me Babe”.

    It’s About Me, Babe

    Go away from my office,
Leave at your own chosen speed.
I don’t care what you want, babe,
I don’t care what you need.
You say you’re looking for someone
Who will guide the state along
A path that serves the greater good,
And who knows what’s right or wrong.
Someone who will protect all that is yours.
    But it’s about me, babe.
Don’t you know, it’s about me, babe.
It’s about me and nothing more, babe.

Go ahead and plan your party,
Who knows if I’ll be around.
I don’t care what you want, babe,
I don’t care if I let you down.
You say you’re looking for someone
Who will live where they should work,
    Who won’t be grabbing constantly
    For each and every perk.
Someone who will respect the law and more.
    But it’s about me, babe.
Don’t you know, it’s about me, babe.
It’s about me and nothing more, babe.

    Go jump into the river,
Try not to make a sound.
I don’t care what you want, babe,
I don’t care if you drown.
You say you’re looking for someone
Who will act in times of need,
Who will offer more than sugar snacks
When there are mouths to feed.
Someone who will care for you and yours.
    But it’s about me, babe.
Don’t you know, it’s about me, babe.
It’s about me, and nothing more babe.

Purported bin Laden tape slams U.S. role in Pakistan

“The message comes as Obama begins his trip to the Middle East, visiting Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and, in Egypt on Thursday, making a major speech to the Muslim world.

Al-Jazeera aired three separate segments totaling just over four minutes from what it said is a new bin Laden audiotape aired over an old still picture of the terrorist leader. The network’s anchors took part in describing each of the segments before they ran them.

Since the message was not posted on the radical Islamist Web sites that usually carry statements from al Qaeda, it is believed that this latest message was hand-delivered to the TV network, based in Doha, Qatar.”

I know that this is OT and belong with the Stimulus Money discussion, but I am a slow reader. An article at Think Progress points to both Palin and Sanford as refusing money to help state education, although 46 of 50 governors are agreeing to national standards.

Alaska can be as independent as it wants, but not participating in national standards harms every kid in Alaska who might apply to college in any of the other 49 states, (OK, except South Carolina). I’ll offer an example. Some time ago, a very conservation faction took over the state board of education (I think it was Kansas), and demanded that Intelligent Design replace Evolution in the science program. They almost did it until someone pointed out that every kid in Kansas, taking the national SAT’s and other exams would be short changed by not having been taught the theory of evolution. They would be at a disadvantage compared to student from other states in the competitive business of college applications. It’s nice to trot out that old line, “I said Thanks-but-no-Thanks” which Palin may think boosts her resume but she is doing at the cost of every kid in Alaska who has to compete against college applicants from 49 other states.

No worries, Mae. There is no such thing as off-topic in an Open Thread! :-) AKM

Sixth board member resigns Wasilla Chamber of Commerce
WASILLA, Alaska — There was more shake up from the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday: board member Chas St. George resigned.

Last week five other board members resigned after the executive director, Cheryl Metiva, came under fire for allegedly misusing chamber money for manicures, massages and other personal items.

Metiva issued a statement Monday night saying, in part, that the credit card charges in question have already been addressed and resolved.

There was a new seven-member board in place Tuesday after an impromptu meeting where six new board members were chosen and sworn in.

Quentin Allgood, who owns a computer company in the Valley is the only remaining original board member.

In an article published by the Boston Herald on September 2, 2008, WHS principal Dwight Probasco stated that, while Levi did play for the Wasilla Warriors hockey team during the 2007-08 season, he was not attending classes that year–instead, he was homeschooled via the Mat-Su Correspondence Study School. Here’s the exact quote:

Principal Dwight Probasco explained Levi’s decision to drop out: “School might have interfered with Levi’s moose-hunting, so he did a home school course. He continued to play on the ice hockey team, even though he stopped coming to classes two years ago. I understand he is now out of work.”

Why is Governor Palin hiding Bristol Palin’s homeschooling?

“Since Levi Johnston revealed that he and Bristol were homeschooled in the fall of 2007 behind the big wall on Lake Lucille, there is NOT A WORD from the Gov. Her recent press releases are not in her particular tongue. She is already employing a ghost writer to present a new syntax. In hopes that when Lynn Vincent pens for Palin the transition won’t be noticed? It’s a nice change on the surface but the same disaster lurks beneath. Among the least of her concerns is education. She doesn’t want Alaska to be compared to other states in her own country, the United States of America. Her ties with the Alaskan Independence Party are showing.”

Nothing wrong with a home-schooler or cyber-schooler participating in the school sports of the school district in which they live. Afterall, their parents have to pay school taxes. The problem with the arrangement is the lack of accountability as to educational progress.

Here in pennsyltucky, the legislature and governor finally passed a bill a couple of years ago that allows home and cyber schoolers to participate in the local district’s extra-curricular offerings. But there’s nothing which allows school districts to ensure that those students meet the same educational eligibility requirements as the public school students. So a public school student could be ruled ineligible based on grades whereas there is no similar or equivalent mechanism for the home or cyber schooled.

Seems Levi had a problem keeping up his studies while he played hockey.

Palin, Romney, Huckabee Already Locked In Death-Match For 2012

Don’t bring a knife to a catfight.Have you ever gone to a buffet and seen, say, three dishes such as lobster, chocolate cake, and cocaine, and wondered which of these delights to sample first? That is precisely the dilemma facing Republican voters as they ponder the upcoming 2012 general election….

A NEW POLL shows respondents pretty much evenly split among Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, genital-free android Mitt Romney, and the depraved lasso fetishist Mike Huckabee. Each of them has something wonderful to offer. But which of these buffet dishes will win the big prize?….

It is interesting that Bristol and Levi were using the Mormon home schooling materials. I wonder how that choice was made, perhaps maybe because they take education seriously? and have high expectations?

this is from Bill M………hmmm, now why did Scarah do away with the job in the first place? what is she admitting she made a mistake? because now the COMPELLING need is obvious? lol she’s worried about media from a dept that has no confirmed leadership? good grief, what’s going to happen that she needs extra guns for that dept and the media. has she hit the ice berg? or maybe the judge just gave her more time by canceling the hearing against her today.

“McAllister said media relations will be a part of his new job. He said it’s a position that was eliminated early in the Palin administration “and the decision has been made that there’s a compelling need for it.”

“There have been a number of high-profile issues involving the Department of Law… but there has been no one whose primary function was to communicate with the media and the public.” McAllister said.”

I am amazed that when someone mentions Mitt Romney, it’s the Dog Story that comes to mind. I read the original seven-part series on line: “The Making of Mitt Romney,” published by the Boston Globe during the 2008 campaign season. It is still available on line when you Google the title. The full description of the incident is even more hilarious. Romney, wife and four sons filled up the family station wagon when they were heading out for vacation, so the dog – in an open wire dog carrier – was tied to the roof (no space inside). Romney had a strict schedule to stick to, including (and haven’t we all been through this), no unnecessary toilet stops. As awful-looking brown stuff ran down the back window, the kids began shouting for their dad to stop. No, he had a schedule. Finally, he relented, stopping at a gas station, Mitt pulled up to the water hose, sprayed off the mess and the dog, hopped in the station wagon and they were off, still (remarkably) staying on schedule, which was the most important thing at the time. The Time Magazine article (cited by London Bridges) added to Romney’s troubles by quoting state animal abuse laws! Even a year later, the story still sticks to him.

So now the interesting political question is this: considering that the leading Republican candidates for 2012 include Sarah Palin, which of her famous exploits will be her “dog story?”

and yes, of course every chance you get keep reminding the world of how poor Scarah was abused by the media, I’m sure you and Ziegler will work that angle to death trying to brainwash the world into believing it’s the truth.

from Bill with love for all things Scarah………..

“It has been a privilege to work for a leader who has accomplished so much and inspired so many. The demand for Governor Palin continues unabated. Even today, I have been in touch with a handful of major national news organizations hoping for some time with the governor, not to mention the numerous regional and international journalists who write or call every day. While the governor grants very, very few of these requests, focusing instead on Alaska media, the fact that these inquiries keep on coming anyway demonstrates that there is a great interest in knowing more about Alaska and her governorship, and of course, about her personally. It has been a phenomenon, and a fascinating series of events to witness up close – even if I have at times been disappointed with the members of my former profession.”

I came across the link that someone posted either here or maybe one of the other AK blogs recently. It’s to an article by Christopher Hutchins from 2008 regarding the election, McCain and Palin. Re-read it again and just can’t get over how well he described GINO. I’ve pasted below as a refresher for all.

    —————————
The most insulting thing that a politician can do is to compel you to ask yourself: “What does he take me for?”

Precisely this question is provoked by the selection of Gov. Sarah Palin.

I wrote not long ago that it was not right to condescend to her just because of her provincial roots or her piety, let alone her slight flirtatiousness, but really her conduct since then has been a national disgrace. It turns out that none of her early claims to political courage was founded in fact, and it further turns out that some of the untested rumors about her—her vindictiveness in local quarrels, her bizarre religious and political affiliations—were very well-founded, indeed. Moreover, given the nasty and lowly task of stirring up the whack-job fringe of the party’s right wing and of recycling patent falsehoods about Obama’s position on Afghanistan, she has drawn upon the only talent that she apparently possesses.

It therefore seems to me that the Republican Party has invited not just defeat but discredit this year, and that both its nominees for the highest offices in the land should be decisively repudiated, along with any senators, congressmen, and governors who endorse them.

I used to call myself a single-issue voter on the essential question of defending civilization against its terrorist enemies and their totalitarian protectors, and on that “issue” I hope I can continue to expose and oppose any ambiguity. Obama is greatly overrated in my opinion, but the Obama-Biden ticket is not a capitulationist one, even if it does accept the support of the surrender faction, and it does show some signs of being able and willing to profit from experience.

With McCain, the “experience” is subject to sharply diminishing returns, as is the rest of him, and with Palin the very word itself is a sick joke. One only wishes that the election could be over now and a proper and dignified verdict rendered, so as to spare democracy and civility the degradation to which they look like being subjected in the remaining days of a low, dishonest campaign.

It seems the same with Palin, nothing sticks to her…well almost nothing.

Gotti was eventually charged and died in prison. But only because “Sammy the Bull” ratted him out. It would be nice if someone in Palins inner circle would do the same and we could finally be rid of her.

Why only on Dr. Tiller? Then even THE GOV. had to pipe up on the same meme. Well I’ll tell you why the Dr. Tiller murder was #1 and the other story wasn’t. It’s because Dr. Tiller was so WELL KNOWN. Why? Because Bill O’Reilly talked about him all the time. Because Operation Rescue had a “Tiller Watch” link on their blog. Because someone tried to kill him before. He was well known because of the misguided Right to Life’s MISSION to stop him. The are just trying to covering their arses.
