Open Thread – Creepy Moose Art

4 06 2009

It’s been a long night.  Still awake as I type this at 3:15am Alaska time.  I’ll post on my evening’s activities tomorrow, but for now I thought I’d share this little bit of oddity in art.

reagan6

I remember a few years ago when these (there are more of different species) popped up downtown in a little plaza outside a coffee shop.  Fortunately I was in the passenger side of a car when I first spotted them, because had I been driving, there very well could have been a wreck.  These sculptures appear to be made out of bronze, and are slightly larger than life-sized on a human scale.  It’s the sort of thing I’m wondering if I ought to be looking at just before bedtime…  I wonder if this is what comes to haunt moose hunters in their dreams?

If any Alaskan Mudflatter can tell me some terrific story behind them or what they symbolize, or some kind of meaning that will make me like them, please do.  Because deep down, I want to find a way to love them.  But for now….they’re just plain creepy.

Everybody was reading AKM’s story here on Mudflats and was making comments. It is also posted on HuffPo as well. Take a moment to chat it up over there as well. Huffpo readers want your opinions or insights as well.

113 Say NO to Palin in Politics Says: June 4th, 2009 at 11:53 AM

did you guys notice how Davis covered his rear by telling the investigator he was “unaware” if Palin benifited by wearing the AC gear……..I do hope he and the gov realize they were under oath to tell the truth.

    ________

    He’s unaware?

It’s his job to become aware, ain’t it? Perhaps he ought not try to hard to give Palin a pass. Makes him look like a downright incompetent “investigator.”

Time for someone to review his “work” on this particular matter.

I am too lazy to take the time to see if someone provided an answer to your question, but I have it. The strange moose (and other wildlife) art was donated to the city of Anchorage in 2005 by The WILD Foundation. It was a gift to the city for hosting the 8th World Wilderness Congress, which is held every four years throughout the globe, and this was the second time it was held in the United States. Unless you were involved in it – I was the official photographer for the event – you would not have known of it. Despite it lasting eight days and having well over a thousand attendees from all over the world, it was ignored by the Anchorage Daily News. I never saw any other press coverage of it, print or electronic, in the local media.

    Aussie Blue Sky Says:

South Carolina’s Supreme Court ordered Gov. Mark Sanford on Thursday to request $700 million in federal stimulus money aimed at struggling schools.

    from Yahoo:

The governor said Thursday he will not appeal the Supreme Court ruling and plans to sign paperwork to request the money Monday. [Casey Edwards] beamed as she told reporters she “was very excited that our schools and our teachers and our education system will be getting the funds that are so desperately needed here in South Carolina.”

Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., the No. 3 House Democrat, inserted an amendment in the federal law with Sanford’s anti-bailout stance in mind, saying legislators could go around a governor’s refusal. While the legality of that was questioned, U.S. District Judge Joseph Anderson on Monday cited it in saying it was clear Congress intended to allow legislators to get around governors who didn’t want the money. :)

That evolution of the SP wikipedia pages that were edited are some interesting little tidbits. Too bad they can’t be updated with her latest BS.

Okay, that only sort of made sense. How about this:

Even if it is a repeat, it’s such good news that it’s fine if we see it twice. (how’s that?)

Alaska Report was having ‘issues’ it said, and wouldn’t load for me.

How many more Republican votes would be needed than those already declared? And will the drama queen go to court?

    UK Lady Says:

TBNT Judy – Tony Blair was generally thought of as a bit of a self serving showman. For instance the Labour Party are generally anti-royalist, but when Princess Di was killed, his eulogy was sychophantic and hammy.
The description of him as Bush’s poodle was in no way meant to cast aspersions on poodles (I think they are brilliant dogs), more a way of saying he was unquestioningly loyal. There were many, many cartoons in our papers with Blair depicted as a poodle.

Although it is thought in the US that Democratics equate to Labour and Republicans to the Conservatives, that doesn’t really translate so easily. To me it seems more like Labour are very left leaning D’s and Conservatives are more like what you call RINO’s or Blue Dogs. The conservative wing of the R’s are more like our fringe parties, not really taken too seriously so far, thank heavens.

And finally, austintx, Danny La Rue was much loved, a wonderful showman who’s ‘Audience with Danny La Rue’ shows were a must see. He will be missed.

Just for the info of all –

Open threads are open for discussion about anything, anywhere. If you do not live in Alaska and there is something local going on which you want to discuss you can feel more than free to do so. :) Nothing is considered off topic.

Thankyou Snoskred – duly noted. Thanks for editing my post, I didn’t want to bother AKM, am probably just being over sensitive. Maybe.

    TBNTJudy Says:

Thank you, UK Lady, for that education. When you say that Labour are similar to very left-leaning Dems, do you mean the fringe Dems? Still trying to understand. So, it seems that your Conservatives are equivalent to what I consider moderates, including both Dems and Reps. Is that a fair assessment? If so, I’ve been rooting for the wrong party over there.

As for the poodle thing, no worries. I was just teasing you ;-) . I knew you would not cast aspersions on them.

  15. 165
    UK Lady Says:

TBNT Judy – Not so much fringe dems, it is more like our two main parties seem to start somewhere around left leaning dems (labour) and finish with Blue dog Dems to Moderate R’s, RINO’s? (Conservative). The likes of the BNP (British Nationalist Party) are like your Beck/Hannity/Coulter R’s, they stand no chance thank heavens . I personally voted Liberal Democrat (third biggest party) this time, as they seem the best of a bad bunch, they are probably nearest to moderate Dems.

    TBNTJudy Says:

Okay, UK Lady. Now I get it. I’m going to display my ignorance once again when I tell you I didn’t even know there was a Liberal Democrat party in England. I don’t think I’m listening to the BBC enough. I used to catch it on early morning radio, but I don’t anymore. What I found so interesting is that the news is world news, rather than the narrow segment we get on most of our news programs. PBS stations tend to do a much better job, but we still don’t hear the kinds of things you do.
