The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Boots on the Ground in Auburn, NY – A Report.

Gov. Sarah Palin Leads Auburn’s Founders Day Parade
It turns out there was a Mudflatter on the ground in Auburn, New York for the Founder’s Day celebration, where Sarah Palin made an appearance.  Please welcome Mudflatter MemphisNY with this commentary from her day at the event.
******************************
I took the short drive into Auburn, found a parking spot a short distance from the parade route, hid my sign in a trusty Kohl’s Shopping bag. Wanted to check out the landscape before I jumped into the muck.  I walked almost the entire parade route and took a stroll around the area in front of City Hall where she was going to speak.  Not many signs visible.  Finally, pay dirt!  Two young guys with Obama signs.
palinny5
I said, “Hey, guys!  Mind if I hang out here?” and pulled out my sign.
palinny3
All of a sudden, people are coming over and questioning the two Obama guys. Not a single word to me, which was fine because I was a little nervous.  Then the parade arrived, and I happened to be right where she and Dude got out of the car!

palinny

She definitely saw me, and got  a deer in the headlights look.  So Obama guys and I go off to the speaking area to get a good spot.
palinny2
Unfortunately, we had a guy behind us making wise (stupid) cracks but I kept silent. Several women standing near me asked what my sign meant and I explained the rejection of the stimulus money for weatherization (of course they didn’t know about that), and we discussed SC Governor Mark Sanford’s rejection of the education monies, and other intelligent topics (they weren’t supporters of HER).  The guy continues to make LOUD  rude comments about me and the Obama guys. He drove in all the way from Rochester to se HER!  The best part was, he was keeping people from getting too close to me. “Don’t get near her! That’s insulation on her sign. You touch that and you’re gonna be itching!”
Finally after all the politicians speeches and presentation of gifts to the gov she began her word salad.  Russia, pitbulls, lipstick …when she got to “hockey Mom” I had to leave.
saladweek
I have come to the conclusion that my sign was way too erudite for the likes of a Palin supporter.  They don’t know about the disastrous things that she is doing.
palinny6
There was a crowd, but I think they get a bigger crowd for the Memorial Day Parade and Duck Derby.  They had several streets closed off with arts and crafts, and food vendors which was pretty nice, and even ice carving demonstrations!  All in all, it would have been a great day without HER!
On the way out I was informed (by a T-shirt) that “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.”  Please send wine so that I may medicate myself.

Wait, there is no “real” Sarah Palin? And is the Truth Squadder attached to her? Even when Tawd isn’t with Sarah, Meg still is, like at the Alfalfa dinner. Meg likes people to know that she went to Georgetown, and the Hoyas must be real proud of her being a toady to Miss Congeniality. And while some people think that Sarah is style over substance, I disagree. The way that she has acted makes me believe she has neither. And I saw some pictures of her at the Women’s Rights Museum on one of her adoring websites. Elizabeth Cady Stanton is making like a category five tornado in her grave.

Re-posting from my entry in the Open Thread:

Someone (you, MemphisNY?) in that Open Thread mentioned that today’s speech by Palin resembled the Wednesday “introduction” (but all-about-me-me-me) speech.

Read what Geoffrey Dunn has to say about that earlier speech. Her grasp of economics has already been shredded by that libertarian lawyer; now Dunn is accusing her of PLAGARISM! HA!

    Go to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey-dunn/palin-plagiarizes-gingric_b_212228.html

If Palin put this speech together herself, as we all suspect she did, it ranks doubly as one of her worst.

Another ethics violation, this time one that doesn’t involve governance and shouldn’t be pursued within the state of Alaska — but just plain ol’ ethical stupidity for which she should be drummed off the national stage. Newt Gingrich already has pretty much repudiated her; this ought to nail the lid down.

That all depends on how much $$$ the Palin Trust Fund is bringing in with their “we-need-more-money-to-fight-these-frivolous-ethics-complaints” advertising campaign that provides food and sustenance to Van Flein and the Palins. Her strategy now seems to be to taunt and shock others with her conduct and words in order to get national attention…and any misconduct along the way, like not claiming baseball tickets, means more $$$ and free publicity. I can see the official press release. “Alaskans are trying to stop me from taking Todd and Bristol to a NY Yankees ball game for a free hot dog and pop. Help me fight these bad people and send more money.”

Something is causing her to do that annoying as hell “t” sound from her tongue hitting the back of her front teeth at the end of every sentence more often. Does anyone else know what I mean? It’s a cross between a condescending cluck and a speech impediment which should have been rectified when she was a kid.

Question: Palin is required to disclose her gifts within a certain amount of time, correct?

She claims to not have opened hundreds of boxes or whatever. Is that a defense to non-disclosure?

I would think that’s an ethics violation right there. She has received them. Not opening them is a way to circumvent the system.

Let’s assume a scenario where a box is received, the return address is plainly visible, and she has some idea that the sender has something valuable, but does not open the box until she’s out of office or she claims to not have opened the box. Let’s assume the box is full of money. Let’s, also, assume she notified the box was coming.

You see Palin has several full-time aides at her disposal and so this is a clear intention to not disclose in my opinion.

I could see her having been given an extra 30 days to disclose, but it has been more than 6 months. And so, what is the justification for not doing it? Lack of time? Lack of resources? Lack of will? Just plain not going to do it?

F to the fourth power, not only did she except all that stimulus money, but almost a year since she ran around telling the nation how she said no thanks to the bridge to nowhere money, she still hasn’t given back the bridge to nowhere money. And Memphis, first of all, that wasn’t a deer in the headlights look, it was a moose in the headlights look. And secondly she was probably wondering why someone would want to veto cotton candy. And I want to see a breakdown of all the costs of this trip to New York which included the stop in Auburn and Long Island to receive the award for her support for families with children with special needs (I guess that doesn’t include providing proper funding for programs aiding special needs kids). Who payed for Todd, who paid for Willow (Willow? for while she was like Chuck the older brother in happy days who only lasted one season) and the Jim Henson to Sarah’s Miss Piggy, Meg Stapleton. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, I guess if she mentions Alaska in her speech, the state gets to pay for everything.

What are her standards in accepting appearances? Well, we know that they have to pay for the whole family, provide the car and corsage (corsage! Does anyone still wear a corsage?) But, judging just from my narrow TV viewing that Letterman, Olbermann, Matthews, Maddow, Stewart, maybe even Colbert would all love to have Sarah as a guest. Oh, I forgot the most important qualification: No hard questions, in fact, no question from no one at all! The ENTIRE population of Auburn is only 27,000 more or less. It hardly seems likely the entire town turned out for GINO even as conservative as it is. I read that too and believe it is a typo – 2000 seems more likely from the pictures.

I’m not good at crowd estimation but like I said I’ve seen the sidewalks of Auburn packed much tighter for the Memorial Day Parade and Lion’s Club Duck Derby. There were a lot of out of towner’s there (me included) I saw comments from Ithaca, Syracuse, Rochester etc. a lot of those people said they were Dems just out to see her (watch the train wreck). It was a bright sunny day and a parade, art show, food, music and as someone (Sauerkraut) comment she was just the side show.

I used to wear corsages. When we were little (like 5 & 7 years old), Daddy would buy me, mom and sister corsages to wear to church on Easter.

When I went to Prom and Homecoming (16 & 17 years old), my wonderful boyfriend was smart enough to have his mom tag along to get really nice ones that matched my dresses.

Never once were the bigger than my head and seemingly nailed into my neck.

And I don’t think I’ve worn one since Jr. year at boyfriend’s Senior Prom. We didn’t go to my prom… he was a big shot college guy at that point and I was done with classes in January, so Prom wasn’t that big a deal Senior year.

    Now… I have to ask…

Am I the weird one for not wearing a corsage at least every six months out in public as a 45 year old?

Sauerkraut: I laughed until I pee’d at the Bon photo. HILARIOUS! Thank God the ’80’s are over. That gal must have bought a 6-pack of hairspray a week to keep those ‘do’s’ in line!

Why does she keep wearing ugly shoes? And no hose? Disgraceful! My mom would NEVER have allowed us out bare-legged for an “event”. I still don’t, unless it’s a PICNIC.

Anyone notice how she just blathers on and on and just kind of inserts hot button words like “bold”, “liberty”, “freedom”, etc. whether they have any meaning or not? I think she’s just counting on folks only hearing those key words and not what surrounds them.

    BOLD! I’m for BOLD!
    FREEDOM! I’m for FREEDOM!
    LIBERTY! I’m for LIBERTY!

Living in Western NY, I was subjected to far too many reminders in the media over the past few days that she had invaded my safe little GINO-free haven. I’ve been carefully avoiding the news coverage, grabbing for my remote the moment the town of Auburn was mentioned, but could not miss an article in this morning’s paper about the big event. While carefully avoiding a glance at the accompanying photo (guaranteed to give me indigestion), I scanned the article to see how many people were there. There was no specific number quoted, only “a few thousand”. I then turned the page to find another article about Fairport Canal Days, an annual festival in a town about 60 miles from Auburn. THEIR attendance estimate was 100,000! No big fancy parade, no famous corsagged guests riding in antique cars. Just a canal…and they STILL beat out Palin!

OT– Late night reading… The entire GQ July Issue, – Levi Johnston interview is online: http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_9497
    ————————————-
I read the whole thing, and out of it all you get a feel for who Levi is. There’s an honesty in his comments, that speaks volumes. I have family who live in a small town in Idaho, the free time activities on a whole are Snow mobiling (during winter, I refuse to call it machining, that’s what you do to metals in a machine shop…), hunting early spring and late fall, and spending lazy afternoons out on a like fishing in the hot summers.

People who live that kind of life style are laid back, and honest to a fault. They are less tainted by the hustle and bustle of a city folk kind of life. The rush to be in a office, or the need to text and be online are less invasive an exhibited. It’s a great place for me to regather my thoughts as I float lazily on a lake absorbing the rare sunlight I get. (No sunlight here in the basement in my PJ’s).

It is heart breaking that Levi and bristol self destructed in the way and shape they did. It is truly difficult to be a father from “Afar” … Spending your time with your child in short little spurts, 4 hours here, a night there.. Supervised visits the rest of the time. Hard to establish a bond, hard to ingrain the core values you need to in a growing child.

Out of this whole Palin mess that I hear about on a weekly basis, Levi has ringed true the most. The palins flip flop from one issue to the next, Accept the stimuls/refuse it. Getting married/not getting married. Abstinence/no abstinence. Levi has remained consistently levi, enjoying the simple things in life and not milking the limelight for all the money he can. Simply using it to advocate his rights and responsibilities as a parent, and a unwilling role model.

Keep strong Levi, Life gets better. You’ll find someone in your life who will accept you for being you and wont give into the pressures of some political hack job telling her what to do.

Please do not think I’ve “lost it,” but I am going to write something nice, sweet, and sappy about the Palins (one of them anyway). WHO would buy Sarah a corsage for all of her important appearances? Who? My guess – her husband. I picture Todd pinning the first corsage on SP in high-school, and like any girl, Sarah gushed. Todd just wants to re-live that special moment.
I don’t expect Todd to be sophisticated. To be honest, he seems likable enough – maybe not the brightest bulb in the box, and maybe still enamored with his beauty-queen/Gov. wife (he probably thinks she is the best catch in the State of AK). I would like to think that his wife reciprocates his affection in kind, but my imagination cannot conjure that up (not after witnessing her mean-girl speecehes, her glee when her supporters screamed “kill him’ (of Obama) at her hate rallies, her throwing of her own daughter under the bus re Trig, and her total lack of empathy in general). So, I do have some sympathy for Todd, as he tries to please his wife and elicit that smile he got from the teen beauty queen, so long ago – as he pinned on her first corsage. I know, I am hopeless.

I was going over the 1930’s on in American history recently. The depression, railriders, wow, what an extraordinary life we lead today communicating news and pleasure.

Hmmmm…..I was wondering how Palin’s plagiarizing was going over in Newt’s camp. Guess we have the answer with this Politico article.

Newt’s quote in Dunn’s post: “Is she (Palin) willing to do the kind of development of national issues and development of a national profile that would be required?….[B]ecoming a national leader would take a significant amount of work.”

I thought it was curious that Palin lifted Newt’s words for her speech in light of his obvious dismissal of her in his quote in April……Was the Anchorage speech an”Imitation is the highest form of flattery” strategy from Palin? Trying to curry favor with the old bull of the GOP by using his own words of “wisdom?”

As usual….Palin’s “stratergery” backfires. Imitation and plagiarism are separated by a very fine line when it comes to writing or speaking….and certainly doesn’t represent the “significant work’ needed to which Uncle Newt was referring. Realistically speaking, an intellectually incurious lightweight like Palin has no chance of mastering national or international issues.

It appears Newt didn’t want to perform the role of ventriloquist with li’l Sarah sitting on his knee mouthing his own words at this dinner. Haha. This soap opera just rolls on…..

Apparently SP showed up at the Autism Walk in a tight suit with short skirt, spoke a few words, put on sneakers, walked less than 1/4 mile and then got the heck out of there and headed for the Yankee game! So much for supporting Autism!

I think the corsage thing is related to the 20 points teabagger/Joel’s Army/let’s take the wayback to June Cleaver good ol’ days thing. I think she wants it to be 1930 when women wore corsages to church and for every little thing. Aside from prom and the occasional anniversary or Mother’s day, corsages just aren’t real big anymore. Especially the big cattelya orchids. To me it’s Palins keep them barefoot and in the kitchen magical thinking. Which is totally at odds with her desire to be the first female president. But I guess she is the exception and all of the *other* women need to take their shoes off and get back into the kitchen.

They are just like her. High spikes with platform, black patent leather and…buckles and rivets. They don’t come in red but I am so surprised she didn’t buy them in the faux snakeskin.

I think it would be so fun to have an open thread for people to post shoes they think Palin would buy. I’ve seen quite a few that are so….her. Sometimes I think there is a fine line between the fashions of the beauty queen and the drag queen. Or hooker.
