This was the gorgeous sunset on Thursday night.  It was taken in the last few seconds before the sun dipped behind the mountains across Cook Inlet.  Most sunsets are lovely here, but this one took my breath away.

Just this letter about health director firing last week. THIS is why she left Alaska–to get out of the hot seat for a bit. This was on “Progressive Alaska “blog.
from Department of Public Health Director Beverly Wooley’s resignation letter, dated Friday, June 5, 2009:

Dear DPH Team – You are an incredible group of individuals whose efforts make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of Alaskans every day. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Director these past 20 months, but the time has come for me to move on. I’m sorry I was not able to personally convey this news to many of you, but time did not allow.

I will be leaving state government service, effective July 1, 2009, per Governor Palin’s request.

It has been a blessing to work with such a diverse array of talented people – the DPH Team! Your compassion and commitment to public health is remarkable. I am thankful for the time we have shared in service to the people of Alaska, helping to inspire and shape public health practices and policies for the benefit of all people.

Even though your deeds to protect and promote the health and safety of our residents aren’t always acknowledged, they are appreciated. Thanks to all of you for helping to make our communities great places to live, work and play. Keep up the strong work.

I’d also especially like to thank Dr. Butler for his strong leadership, immense knowledge and unwavering support. He is undoubtedly one of the best Chief Medical Officers I have ever had an opportunity to work for.

I will miss all of you, but I leave you with a very competent and committed DPH Leadership Team. Working collaboratively, I am confident you will continue to provide Alaska residents with the excellent public health services they have come to rely on.

I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Until then, I wish you peace and good health. Take care of yourself and of each other. Please keep in touch. Beginning in July, my new contact information is:

    [Deleted for privacy]

    With warm regards,

    Beverly K. Wooley

It is probably one of the worst written things i have ever read, not to mention i had to open 17 separate tabs to read it all in little chunks. And it truly contains precious little information about Levi – it says much more about the writer, Alaska, hunting, Rex and Tank than Levi.. out of the 17 pages, maybe 3 were Levi Related. :(

Pretty average piece of journalism, if you ask me. Our AKM could have done a much better job, plus it would have been a coherent story from start to finish instead of jumping about all over the place like a demented frog.

    Beautiful picture AKM!
I am sitting this morning in my pickup camper, in a nice little campground in Fairbanks. I have been here a few days now and will be leaving tomorrow to head south. I am on a little adventure this summer and will be looking for land in Palmer area. Spouse has been asked to join his company year round instead of being just a seasonal employee. The jobs have been getting bigger and he has been gone from home longer and longer. He was gone for 10 months last year all together. Financially that has been great for us, but being on my own so much and off the grid has been getting more difficult for me.
I have never spent more than a few days in the south central area and usually don’t leave home at all in the summer. This is the first year in many many years I am not growing a garden.
I plan on spending the summer in the area (with a few side trips to Kenai and other points).
I am not traveling alone I have 4 dogs with me and after 4 days I am glad to say they are very well behaved for “bush dogs” though there noses are a little out of joint at being tied up all the time.
I hope maybe to get a chance to meet a few mudpuppies on my adventure.
I will continue to post my progress on the open threads if that is OK with AKM.
    Sooooo my adventure begins.

Egan wins seat on finance committee
Southeast legislators now hold two seats on powerful seven-member committee

Egan joined the coalition after his appointment to the Senate on the last day of the legislative session in April. That followed a drawn-out battle between Gov. Sarah Palin and Senate Democrats over the vacancy.

Rep. Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, was the first pick for the Senate seat by Juneau Democratic leaders. She praised the Senate leadership Friday for appointing Egan to the Finance Committee.

“I’m really pleased the Senate voted to keep the Finance seat with Juneau, Dennis will do a great job with it,” she said.

Senate Majority Leader Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage, called Friday’s appointment “fantastic.”

I do believe Scarah owes Lisa a big thank you, we know an apology for the DC smackdown would be stretching it.

I didn’t know Frank Murkowski wrote a recent opin on Palin. I’ll have to dig that up.

The story writer would fit in with the Palins — self-absorbed.
Checked his Wiki page. IMO shows you QC was only interested in having Levi story to get into the media frenzy of having the Palin name attached to it. Had nothing to do with Levi’s story — that was secondary. The writer they sent — I would say isn’t. He has no credibility in the journalism world. IMO, QC played Levi. Only wish Butler/Tank could see it as I think there was some blinding complimentary commentary in the way.

“It does not matter to the listeners that they are unable to repeat even the main theme of the sermon five minutes later; the important thing is the comforting emotion of familiarity and belonging which swept over them as they were listening.”

Second, his lawyers may try “to prove that those on the prosecution are complete idiots for even bringing the case.” (good luck with that… not)

    And the kicker:
“O’Reilly refused comment but sent his producer Jesse Waters out to ambush Tiller’s widow.

” ‘Why didn’t she stop her husband from murdering all those kids?” said Waters. ‘The Folks want to know.’ ”

That just reeks of the (so-called) church bunch that would picket fallen soldiers’ funerals.

Another topic: the Newt. Who called Sotomayor a racist, then backtracked, now calls her “a racialist.” WHAT?? A rose by any other name and all that. He didn’t backtrack a smitch, just substituted a fake word for what he really meant.

I finally figured out what Sarah Palin speeches remind me of. Long, long ago when I was a young and terrified farm kid grad student teaching a comp class of LA inner city college kids, I had a problem with lectures. I would write out my notes, but in front of the class I was not only too scared to stand (I lectured sitting down in those fraught days) but I was literally scared blind–I couldn’t read the notes I had written. Since I had practiced and practiced I would have a vague recollection of a few word groupings, but no real idea of how to fit them together to make sense. So I would sit in front of my class, my hands knottin in my lap so my students couldn’t see how badly I was shaking, open my mouth, and hope sound emerged. More often than not, it did–random phrases, disjointed words, peculiar half jokes–very much like Palin’s less scripted performances.

The difference is that I quickly got acclimated to the point where I could stand up so the tall obnoxious older student could no longer take advantage of my fear by looking down the front of my blouse. My comments became rational, cogent, and on occasion funny. I was bad, but I got better…

Bet she’s a surprise show up at Malek’s table. Her way of making this about her. In reality, the joke is on her for what really is her and a small staff that can’t get their act together. If she can’t co-ordinate a dinner attendance not once but twice — she’s the laughing stock once again.

I want Roeder to say how often he listened, I want the attorney to play the clips over and over, I want the books Roeder owned entered into evidence and read aloud to the jury. I want it all over the media. I want O’Reilly supoenaed and forced to testify. Because this may be the only way to nail O’Reilly for what he is. A hate monger, a terrorist inciting the violence of others.

Palin’s lawyer says proper credit given in speech

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been accused of paraphrasing at length from an article co-written by Newt Gingrich when she gave a speech, but her lawyer says proper credit was given to the former House speaker.

(but what about “Craig Shirley” or whatever the co-author was?)

Dangit. It doesn’t want to post the link – just google “palin” – it’s about the third link (within the first ‘hit’)

GINO is doing damage control – Van Flein has already issued a statement assuring all that SP DID attribute the quotes in her speech to Newt.
Van Flein must be thrilled with his job as GINO’s personal attorney with access to $$$$$ of the AK Fund Trust.

“It is abundantly clear in context, and even in subcontext, that the overview of President Reagan’s legacy was attributed to Newt Gingrich,” Palin’s lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, said.

“Far from ‘lifting’ or plagiary, this is proper attribution in a political speech,” Van Flein said. “The audience was made aware that Mr. Gingrich wrote about President Reagan’s legacy, and Gov. Palin attributed her paraphrasing to Mr. Gingrich expressly and did so at the beginning and at the end of the paraphrasing.”
