Boots on the Ground on Long Island – Palin & Hannity

Mudflatter Merry Prankster was our boots on the ground at the Sarah Palin appearance on Long Island yesterday, including the IGHL (Independent Group Home Living) fundraiser, and the Sean Hannity interview.  Many thanks to Merry Prankster for this entertaining and interesting report!

************************************************************

by Merry Prankster

The fundraiser included three events – the actual fundraiser, a meet and greet for SarahPAC, and an interview with Sean Hannitiy that will appear Monday on his show. The first two events where held at a separate cottage on the grounds and were obviously politically sensitive. Here is a breakdown.

4:30 – 4:50pm
I am actually impressed with Sarah’s advance man Tim (?).  In a previous life I worked for rock bands and he reminds me of a good band manager – calm on the outside but aware of every detail and treats everyone nice. Local donors that paid $5,000 a ticket start showing up. Don’t worry, if you did not pay in advance. Sarah PAC has donation sheets and they do take all major credit cards.

4:50 -
Everyone is a-flutter when Hannity shows up with the Fox News team. Hannity is obviously ecstatic about interviewing the Governor, but bitching about the “visceral” reaction the governor received on the campaign trial. I guess he missed how visceral her tone was (“palling around with terrorists”). The local donors are star struck when they see Hannity.  He is just as much of an ass in person as he is on TV.

palinli3

5:10 – Team Sarah arrives. Todd is first out of the car and gets the low-down. He seems very protective. Once he is clear about the arrangements, the governor gets out. Being a man, I am not very observant about clothes, but the one thing I notice is the shoes! Sarah is wearing red sandals whose heels are 5” tall… She has trouble navigating the uneven walkway. She reminds me of the ditzy aunt at the barbeque with the crazy shoes and the loud outfit. At a barbeque we would just roll our eyes, but she could have been a heartbeat away from the presidency. Fifteen minutes later Willow comes out – short denim shorts & tank top and baby on her arm.  Can’t figure out who the baby was.  Definitely too big to be Tripp, but Sarah said that Trig did not make the trip.  Being a former soccer coach, I can’t help noticing her legs.  She looks like she could kick a soccer ball through a wall.

5:25 – Sarah comes back out for an outdoor interview with Hannity – black dress, shirt with a button-up sweater over it.. Again, she has 5” heels on. How can she stay upright? Instead of a sit-down, they do a strolling interview.  Before the interview, Sarah asks many questions about the camera angles and marks, definitely a beauty show contestant.  I can’t catch all the words, but it is a love fest. They are running late – but the love fest continues. Get a room for god sakes! The Fox News producer and Meg Stapleton try to give the “hi” sign. Todd walks over and finally gives the signal and they are done

5:45 – Sarah does a very quick meet and greet (and photo-op) with the local donors. She does not have time for all the photos so they arrange for a separate photo shoot in the “chocolate room” at the IGHL fundraiser All the donors seemed to be Sarahsized!  I am not as interested in meeting the governor as finding out where the chocalate room is!

6:30 – Sarah makes her appearance at the IGHL event. She does a quick photo opportunity for those in the cheap seats (separate rooms) and on to the main hall. I am interested to see what local politicians show up. Congressman King, one of the two remaining NY congressman (and possible Senate candidate) is the most visible. He has a seat at Sarah’s table and does an interview for CNN. In the main hall I see NY State Senator Flanagan, Assemblyman Fitzpatrick and former County Executive Gaffney. An uninspiring turn-out, but thanks to Sarah, Rush and Sean, the northeast Republicans are a dying breed.

palinli1

7:30 – Sarah goes on – Christ, didn’t one of the five colleges teach her how to use verbs and pronouns?! She begins the speech with a bizarre story about blue star families and gold star families. Since Track is serving in Iraq , the Palins are a blue star family. She was very fortunate to meet a gold star family member, whose son paid the ultimate sacrifice. She almost sounded envious! Sarah then proceeds to a word salad that included precious in sanctity in every sentence. She was careful to make sure she thanked the important people and said serving children with special needs could be a non-partisan issue that the country could rally around. If she only used verbs and pronouns it would have been a fine speech for this audience; something you might expect from a small town mayor.

palinli2

8:00- Hannity is back in the building! He comes up and promises to give a non-partisan speech and then immediately points out that Sarah does not use a teleprompter. What is it with the wingnuts?  They would be better off attacking Obama’s policies, the guy can give a speech, teleprompter or not! Hannity then tells an unfunny story about giving Colmes a free hunting trip with Cheney. He wraps telling everyone about growing up on Long Island (don’t remind us) and thanking what’s left of the Republican Party (don’t let the door hit you in the ass). He closes on how he always support pro-life issues.

8:30 – On to the bar for some serious sedation!

*****************************************
Great report!

Hannity’s glowing orange eyes…..a trick of the camera, or a window into his soul?

Here’s a little sneak peek at the interview which will air tonight on Fox.

HANNITY: What do you make of – look at the state of the economy now…

PALIN: Well, when you consider that the federal government is about eleven trillion dollars in debt, and we’re borrowing more to spend more.. it defies any sensible economic policy that any of us ever learned through college. It defies economy practices and principles that tell ya ‘you gotta quit digging that hole when you are in that financial hole’

Palin continues:

“America is digging a deeper hole and how are we paying for this government largesse. We’re borrowing. We’re borrowing from China and we consider that now we own sixty percent of GENERAL MOTORS – or the U.S. government does… But who is the U.S. government becoming more indebted to? It’s China. So that leads you to have to ask who is really going to own our car industry than in America.”

HANNITY: You know but it goes back – It does go back a little to the campaign. I mean, ‘spread the wealth, patriotic duty…’

PALIN: Kind of a ‘we told ya so’.

HANNITY: Well, is that how you feel?

PALIN: That’s how I feel! I feel like… and I think that more and more constituents are going to open their eyes now and open their ears to hear what is really going on and realize ok… Maybe we didn’t have a good way of expressing that, or articulating that message of ‘here is what America could potentially become if we grow government to such a degree that we cannot pay for it and we have to borrow money from other countries, some countries that don’t necessarily like America.

And this many months into the new administration, quite disappointed, quite frustrated with not seeing those actions to rein in spending, slow down the growth of government. Instead Sean it is the complete opposite. It’s expanding at such a large degree that if Americans aren’t paying attention, unfortunately our country could evolve into something that we do not even recognize.

HANNITY: Socialism?

PALIN: Well, that is where we are headed. That is where we have to be blunt enough and candid enough and honest enough with Americans to let them know that if we keep going down these roads… nationalizing many of our services, our projects, our businesses, yes that is where we would head. And that is why Americans have to be paying attention. And we have to have our voices heard. And ultimately it need to be our will, the American people’s will imposed on Washington, instead of the other way around.

So, go back to the first answer up there, where Palin says, “it defies any sensible economic policy that any of us ever learned through college.”  So sayeth the woman who got a “D” in Economics in college.

[REMINDER - The open thread remains active all day for o/t comments. Thanks!]

Yes Lilubart – It is with dismay that all I hear from the Repukes are harsh criticisms of the spending/stimulus. Do they think ANY of us like this? Have they ever considered WHY the Govt. MUST step up to provide funds when the private sector no longer can/will? Have any of them studied basic Keynesian economics? Worst of all, I have not seen ANY of them offer an alternative solution to the mess that their Party got us into (with de-regulation and unbridled capitalism). NOT ONE of them has offered up a viable, alternative plan to fix the economy. I read much of the transcript of GINO’s interview with Hannity, and much of it is focused on the economy – of all the issues for SP to pretend to be an expert on! Her simplistic critique of the spending is making me want a drink – and I have not had one in 17 years.

Compared to last year when you can practically taste the depression, the disillusionment and general heart dropping worry for our country, today there is hope, some sun through the clouds, a possibility that WE can succeed but it will be hard. THAT is what Palin doesn’t get.

We still have a hard road to go and there are tons of people out of work and struggling but there is hope. Palin’s hate and stirring up trouble doesn’t help anyone. The other question that nags me is the whole “giving people the opportunity to succeed or fail” idea. Who among us relishes the opportunity to fail? Too also, success or failure is not totally up to the individual. Many factors play into a person’s success or failure. There is inherited wealth. There is disease. There is accident. There is an economy that tanks. There is inherited smarts, or not. I guess this might be OT, so I’ll quit now.

And so what’s with Willow wearing shorts to something like that? Isn’t she a bit old to show up dressed that way? And who was the baby? I wish Palin would get a clue about what is appropriate dress for herself and her family.

Trust me Doggonit, IGHL would not her endorse her … Suffolk county is not really home to that many conservative Republicans. In fact only two of NY States 31 congressional seats is held by a Republican. With the exception of Congressman King, NY Republicans have stayed away from the National Party and the National Party was the reason that the Republicans lost the special election for Gillderbrand’s seat. Rumors have it King is going to run for Senator because he doesn’t like the odds for being re-elected in his district. If he is going to lose, he rather lose going for the Senate seat.

Very few people at the IGHL function were hard core Palin fans and most would have come regardless of the speaker. Palin was invited to draw curiosity seekers, which it did. The Sarah PAC event was added later and was in a different building organized by the Sarah PAC staff. While Sarah’s speech to IGHL certianely was confusing, it really was not a political speech.

Please understand, folks, this is TEMPORARY. If GM takes the LOAN $$ to re-tool, it only stands to reason that the Gov’t should have a stake in the situation.

Who loans without collateral? Certainly not banks!

    Nor should the government.

Sarah has accomplished what few others can do. She has managed to keep her name in the press (media) and people talking about her all day without having to pay a high powered team of publicists to do it. The latest version of the Sarah’s Going To The Dinner/No She’s Not Story is that she was simply asked not to speak, but she took it to mean that the invitation was withdrawn. Maybe she just got in a snit; maybe she did it for the attention that it seems to have generated. Seems to be an internal GOP thing between Sessions and Cornyn, and the reports go back and forth between two credible sources in Washington DC: Politico and The Hill. Sarah will no doubt play the victim, wear another pair of outlandish shoes and the party will talk about party unity when they must be thinking to themselves, “Gee, I gotta talk to some of the McCain people and see what we are getting ourselves into with this girl.” Good Luck, GOP, she’s all yours!

Do we own sixty percent of GM or does the Government? And which of the two cases would be preferable?

Although China is the largest foreign holder of US debt it currently accounts for 24% of foreign ownership. So it’s a bit premature for Palin to go all “racist Pat Buchanan” on those infernal foreign orientals. And, as someone who took three universities and two colleges and 12 years to get my BA in media communications/journalism (and then another 4 years to get my MA plus 32 hours in English & American lit) because I paid for my education myself when ever I could afford classes (and I moved through three states during that timeframe), I would appreciate not snarking people who take a long time and several institutions of higher learning. It is the will of the people that has been imposed on Washington.

The will of the people said “Change We Can Believe In” is better than a continuation of the fear-mongering, word salads, and mindless exploitation of dirty un-renewable resources as proposed by McCain/GINO.

President Obama won by a wide margin, the widest of any first-term President in the modern age of elections. The will of the people is abundantly clear – and there will soon be a complete mandate when Al Franken is sworn in.

We must not fear the GINOs of the GOP, but we must remain diligent and assist President Obama, the Administration, and the new Congress to work together while they have this mandate to enact The Change We Believe in and Now Expect.

justafarmer, it is particularly commendable when someone who can’t just drop everything and plunk down the cash to enroll full-time to get a degree perseveres and does what it takes to earn one, however long it takes. Good for you!

Canadian Neighbour has pointed out the key issue, which is that while SP has a degree, she doesn’t seem to have picked up commensurate knowledge along the way. That brings up the “why” question, which makes people curious about whether the frequent transfers had something to do with it.
Palin’s circumstances while going to college would seem to be fairly fortunate, but maybe looks are deceiving. I am curious as to whether she has ever directly addressed the reasons why she transferred so much.

In any case, please don’t take it personally. It is clear you put your education to good use.

justafarmer, your posts and your thoughtfulness indicate that higher education was not “wasted” on you. I certainly recognize that GINO may have had to work her way through, as you did, and as probably most students do (I had p/t jobs all the way through, including teaching undergraduates, but scholarships were what made it possible for me to finish three degrees in the “normal” timeframe.) That does not mean that the extra time was spent wisely or productively in her case. The results speak for themselves.

    Just my perspective:

    1) Even without knowing you or your background, your posts are always articulate, educated, and intelligent….unlike Palin who sounds inarticulate, uneducated, and mediocre. Various educational pathways can be taken but it’s the student’s passion and dedication for learning that makes the difference….and it shows, either impressively or not.

    2) Palin is aspiring to the top leadership positions in the country. Her educational background is entirely fair game for scrutiny and, even, criticism.

    3) Palin clearly has the very unprofessional habit of padding her resume and credentials ( such as her foreign policy experience or economics acumen) which is an additional reason to challenge her credentials and educational claims.

    4) The modern world is so complex socially and politically. Most people don’t want a President of this country who has the academic background and, maybe more importantly, the obvious lack of continuing intellectual pursuits, discipline, and curiosity, that Palin has thus far demonstrated.

    5) Criticisms of Palin’s academic record are valid within the framework of all the points elucidated above…. but would not necessarily be valid if extended to others simply because they share a superficial commonality with her (such as the period of study to attain a degree).

    1. Her syntax and grammar. I can’t see how she could have received a degree in journalism. She has similar language deficits that I see in my special education students.

    2. None of the students or professors at her last college remember her at all. She’s not the type to hang out in the back of the room!

    3. All of her current buddies are from High School. While you might remain friends with some from HS, most people who have college degrees have at least a few friends from college.

    4. Wouldn’t the school she graduated from ask her to be a commencement speaker? Or in some way use her for PR for the college?

I always wondered if there wasn’t some college-gate around the corner. Maybe that’s the iceberg?

The objection to Sarah’s educational background is that it stopped someplace around high school. She may have complete college, but none of it shows. My husband made the same observation about GWBush, who had the luxury of Ivy League Top School undergrad and graduate schools. None of it seemed to rub off on him except for the partying. My husband’s theory is that although Bush claimed to have read almost a book a week while he was in office, just his manner of speech showed that the books had no effect on him. One of Bush’s great faults was that he was incurious. He didn’t want to hear any ideas that didn’t agree with his own. And, he excused it all as being directed by a “higher power.” Sarah balked at Katie Couric’s question, “What do you read to inform your world opinion etc.” but it clear that it was Sarah’s lack of reading that was the problem. It showed in her poor speech, her defensive reaction to any criticism, and lack of curiosity about the world. (No jokes about Russia!) Someone once pointed out that when Sarah learned that there would be a Downs Syndrome child in the family, she had no idea what to expect. She didn’t even read about something so close to home. So, Dear JustaFarmer, it’s not where you went to school nor how long. It’s that you continued learning and growing throughout your life, and you took advantage of whatever education had to offer you. Not to put your comment down, Priceless, but AKM didn’t write that Palin plagiarized from Gingrich. Her headline “Pailn Pals Around With Plagiarists?” contains a question mark. So does Shannyn Moore’s on the same subject. Gryph’s post at his place starts by asking a question, but answers with a “You betcha!”

My only post at PA on this doesn’t state that she plagiarized from NG, but my DailyKos diary clearly headlines her as a plagiarist.

I can’t wait to see What Do I Know? weigh in on this. We’ll all learn from Steve. The reality, though, seems to be to me, that had she done this the way she did in some circumstances (as a student, academic, author or technical writer), it would have clearly qualified as plagiarism.

Apparently, though, politicians are held to a far, far lower standard than others in this regard.

I say no! The fewer dollars that the state of Alaska government has, the fewer dollars we spent. And that’s good for our families and for the private sector.”

I notice that Eddie is repeating the LIE that Palin has been cleared of all ethics charges, but that is not true and everyone knows it. She is REQUIRED to pay back the State nearly TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS for trips she charged for her kids that she shouldn’t have.

Just curious, why does this report say the fundraiser was for SarahPAC? It was for IGHL.

You need to read the first sentence. Just the very first sentence.

Perhaps your omnia needs a trifle more vid.

    heres the thing.
BHO has speech writers..and has had praise from everyone for his speaking ability..

G.W. was not a great talker, but you know when he said something important..oh like keeping the United States safe from terrorist attacks..He meant it.

People will complain about the Iraq war with regards to the GWOT (Global War on Terrorism) and how we didn’t need to blah blah blah.Saddam was captured and killed and we’re making small inroads in Pakistan..

What they don’t complain about is how Freddic Mac and Fannie Mae have almost gone under, but heavily supported BHO.
“A review of Federal Election Commission records back to 1989 reveals Obama in his three complete years in the Senate is the second largest recipient of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae campaign contributions, behind only Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., the powerful chairman of the Senate banking committee. Dodd was first elected to the Senate in 1980.”

“In contrast, McCain warned of the coming mortgage crisis as he pressed in 2005 for regulatory reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

    _____________

Do not make me spit my coffee all over you. Bush kept us safe from terrorists.

    Right.

Tell that to Rob Schlegel and Candy Williams and Billy Kelly and Chuck Jones and John Jenkins and CeeCee Lyles and Mark Bingham and Tom Burnett and Todd Beamer and Steven Bates and Mike Horrocks and Ace the hockey player and nearly 3000 others who died on 9/11.

Fact is, Lyles, Bingham, Burnett and Beamer did much more to protect our country from terrorists on board Flight 93 than Bush did during his entire 8-year term.
