Socialist Whiplash with Hannity and Palin

collar

There are times when commentary just seems unnecessary.

(From Sean Hannity’s interview on Fox News tonight with Sarah Palin)

Hannity:  By the way for all of us in New York, where we are now, where we pay 10% income tax, you actually give every citizen in Alaska a check back.

Palin: We are the only state with a negative tax rate (Hannity looks at the camera in disbelief and envy mouthing “I’m so envious(?)”)  where we don’t have any income, sales or property tax statewide, and yes we have a share of our oil resource revenue that goes back to the people that own the resources.  Imagine that.

Hannity:  And it went up higher since you’ve been the governor and you negotiated with the oil companies.  That all went up so people get a bigger check.

Palin:  There was a corrupt tax system up there and we had a couple of lawmakers end up in jail because of the tax system that was adopted so we cleaned it up and said we wanted a fair and equitable share of the resources that we own, and the people will share in those resource revenues that are derived.

********************************

5 minutes, and one wormhole into another dimension later…..

********************************

Palin:  If Americans aren’t paying attention, unfortunately our country could evolve into something that we do not even recognize.  Certainly that is so far from what the founders of our country had in mind for us.

Hannity:  Socialism?

Palin: Well….that is where we are headed.

Well, I guess the lesson here is that when we as US citizens own an asset or use tax money to improve our infrastructure and civic life, apparently that must count as Socialism (tsk tsk, Bad Feds!) But when we as Alaska citizens own an asset, or use oil tax money to pay our way, we’re just being good stewards of what Wally Hickel called the Owner State (three cheers for us lucky Alaskans and our free ride!)

So that’s OK, then. No contradiction there. Phew! Glad to get that all straightened out.

Sarah also said the transcontinental gas line would be built by private industry. She left out the part about who would finance it. The Federal government is expected to provide $ 40 billion. And very likely Alaska and the Federal Gov would have to guarantee profitability.

  7. 7
    Aussie Blue SkyNo Gravatar says:

“resource revenues that are derived” ….. Mrs Palin just doesn’t know how say what she needs in plain English and so uses the terminology from the many budget reports she’s forced to scrutinise with red pen and black heart poised.

Accounting language will certainly go down well at her next stump speech for her ignorant racist rabble ….. (I can see them now, poring over spreadsheets together before yelling, “Kill him!”).

It is amazing how accessible Palin is to east coast neocons like Hannity while being totally unavailable to her own constituents in places like Anchorage. Alaskans would have an easier time finding a rattlesnake in the woods.

or perhaps she was saying, “something so far from what our corporate leaders (and my pastor) think is good for America. ” Hurumph. Nader’s comments about how our power (we the people – not the corps) is in the Congress are insightful. But then, Ralph is always insightful.

    SteveNo Gravatar says:

Did Hannity happen to mention that she was able to increase the socialist payout due to the fact that oil was well over $100 a barrel resulting in gas prices over $4/gallon? All of the extra money she paid out probably ended up back in Exxon’s pockets…

She also neglects to mention (although I haven’t seen the show yet… it’s on DVR, waiting for cocktail hour so I can get through it while not having liquor for breakfast, which is frowned upon in most circles) that Alaska gets more tax cash per capita back from “the feds” than any other state and that they are NOT shy about accepting fed funds for everything from disaster relief to bridges. I think the last figure I saw was that for every $1.00 they pay in fed taxes, they get $1.84 back. Insane!

No wonder they don’t have income, property or sales taxes! If she wants something, she just runs to “the feds” for the money!

  17. 17
    va_soccer_momNo Gravatar says:

Then there’s the part of the interview where she goes on and on (and on) about the “strings” attached to the stimulus money, still insisting that the government would mandate building codes for all Alaskans.

And when Hannity asks her about the legislature overriding her veto? SP: “It’s cool. You know, checks and balances…” Are we sure that she’s not still in high school?

His wife went on to say, “In a burqua, if a woman has brains, it shows. She obviously has no brains. And her cute is getting old. She is like yesterday’s dessert.”

So, how does a state get along without a major resource to sell? How would she propose we raise revenue in NYC?

Should Montana take over the lumber and tourist industries? Why not? The trees and natural beauty belong to the people of Montana, they should get the money instead of whatever private industry is running it now.

  28. 28
    Gindy51No Gravatar says:

    “sheesh she is stupid”

Biggest understatement ever uttered in regard to this idiot.
I think she should also have pointed out that the cost of living in Alaska is many times higher than where ever Hannity lives. He should thank his lucky stars he does have to pay taxes as opposed to worrying about choosing between heating his home or eating.

  29. 29
    LilybartNo Gravatar says:

Had to bring this over from a previous thread: “Thank god it’s not at $140 [a barrel]. You know people say, “Hey, Alaska, 85 percent of your state budget is based on the price of a barrel of oil. Aren’t you glad the price is going up?. I say no! The fewer dollars that the state of Alaska government has, the fewer dollars we spent. And that’s good for our families and for the private sector.” Sarah Palin

she thinks it’s GOOD for Alaska not to make too much money on oil, so she can spend LESS on services for the people and that’s good for Alaska’s families.

What is the Econ Dept like at Idaho State?

  30. 30
    EyeOnYouNo Gravatar says:

Talking about growing government, isn’t she the one who just opened up a job for Bill McAllister, one which her administration had previously eliminated, so now there is another job, costing the state about $90,000.00 yearly (plus benefits) that wasn’t there before.

It’s okay if she grows “government”, but not when she thinks someone else might be doing it.

  31. 31
    samperNo Gravatar says:

So, what she’s saying is that “If we have it, we spend it, and if we don’t have it, we spend less, and that’s GOOD for Alaskans”?

What about SAVING the surplus for a rainy day (like the many rainy days to come in Eagle?).

Or what about using the surplus to, oh I don’t know, PAVE A ROAD, IMPROVE THE SCHOOLS, SET UP FOOD BANKS, ETC.?

God, she’s stupid. Higher oil prices means GOOD for Alaskans, if not necessarily for the rest of us (Gas in Detroit is desperately close to $3/gallon, but luckily not the outrageous $4.50 of last summer!).

Why doesn’t she just demand that oil go down to $1 per barrel so she doesn’t have to spend ANY money… not even on her own SALARY!

    What a nitwit!

With 3:38 left in the Hannity Fox interview, she talks about how it would be bad if the price of gas went to $140, and how if the state had it, the government would just spend it.

As our governor, has this woman never heard of the Constitutional Budget Reserve or the Permanent Fund? There is clearly precedent in Alaska for saving for a rainy day.

Does she not realize that if we invested it wisely now in weatherization and alternative energy it would have lasting benefits for those having to choose between food and fuel? (Let me give you a hint, governor, that’s not just people in the remote areas of the state, though they have been hardest hit.)

Does she not understand that we have communities in our state that are still in need of rebuilding their homes and basics items, like toilet paper and pilot bread? (It doesn’t get much more basic than that.)

How about a little money for Veterans Aviation Outreach for aircraft repairs and maintenance so they can reach a few more veterans in our outlying communities? If you are truly a supporter of our military, then how about a little money to support those veterans that don’t live right next door to the VA in Anchorage?

I’m so disgusted by her preference for political pandering on the national stage over governing here wisely, a job we pay her a very handsome salary to do (and let’s not forget the benefits, including her excessive per diem claims).

But the dollars that we have, of course, we have to be prudent and wise with.”

Off topic a bit, but still on topic as far as yesterday’s events are concerned:

I was also at HuffPo reading the excerpt from TheHill where some anonymous GOP congressmen were criticizing Palin over her ditzy behavior since the GOP loss in the election.

As they do in so many other instances where they detect negative reactions to Palin’s behavior, the see2pee’ers have been busy trying to pin the tail on that elephant — they’re determined to IDENTIFY and PUNISH the mean ol’ GOP’ers who asked for anonymity in that article.

If you read what one of the Chief Dementors over there has written, they’re judging and condemning several prominent GOP’ers based on far, far less evidence than what Palin’s Deceptions has unveiled in their investigations this last 9 months.

I guess the funniest thing about most of their windmill-tilting is that they don’t know which way to aim the lance: should Palin snub the GOP and repudiate the powers-that-be, or suck up to them and try to be nicey-nice, wedging her way into a position of power?

    ———-

Oh, and in their laugh-a-day pantheon of blog posts, they are saying that David Letterman is a “sexist pervert”. Someone apparently felt the need to don sackcloth and ashes, and watch the Letterman show, and was offended by #2 on Letterman’s Top 10 list for the evening:

“2. Bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her “slutty flight attendant” look.”

Seems someone on Letterman’s writing team noticed that Palin has been caking on the makeup somewhat heavily, lately, and I suppose that last reference may have something to do with the miniskirts — but they didn’t mention the toenails!. The toenails should have been in the Top 10 list, too!

Even IF she understood economics enough to understand how Alaska works, there is no other state or this country, that could be run the way Alaska is. How could Minnesota not have taxes? Take over the tourist industry and run it for the state?

You have to understand the righties’ Truth Rule – A grain of truth in a bucket of BS equals a bucket of truth.

Palin’s grain of truth is that the sales tax and property taxes in Wasilla are not statewide taxes. Never mind that it was Palin who manipulated the property tax to favor her fellow Republican (and probably fellow spritual warrior, witch-hunting, Dominionist) land owners, or that it was Palin who implemented the regressive sales tax (which includes food purchases). Also never mind that under her tenure as mayor, revenues rose 39% while expenditures rose 33%. Also never mind that she drove the town’s debt from less than a $1M to $22M+. Don’t you bother with those things, and remember what’s far more important – she’s a fiscal conservative, dammit! lol

Posted by Alaska_Politics Posted: June 2, 2009 From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage —Gov. Sarah Palin will show up for conservative talk radio host Michael Reagan’s speech in Anchorage tomorrow (it’s7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Center for Performing Acts – tickets are $34.50). Reagan’s topic: “What Would Ronald Reagan Do Today?” I spoke to Reagan on the phone today from the Seattle airport. Here are excerpts:

What role do you think Sarah Palin might play in bringing the party back?

Sarah Palin’s going to play a role mainly because of the position she had in the last campaign. She excited a lot of women within the party, they were excited about the fact that a woman in the Republican Party was actually in the position that could have been vice president of the United States…

If I had to say anything about the whole thing with Sarah Palin, is that the last thing she needs is to be in a fight with her daughter’s boyfriend on talk television and talk radio. I think that’s not good for her now or in the future. Sometimes you just need to shut up.” “”
