Don’t give them any ideas. If they get away with this, there will be no bounds regarding their efforts to impose biblical law. The American Taliban is here, hiding their bigotry, hatred, and violence behind a cross. Needs to be Federal laws in place to protect the LGBT persons.

    @ CO almost native,

If they started stoning adulterers, they would lose at least one of their 2012 Presidential front runners.

Newtie is a 2x breaker of the 7th Commandment. Funny how the Catholic Church was happy to overlook that fact and went ahead and let him convert recently (at the behest of his 2nd mistress/3rd wife– an apparently very ‘pious’ woman.) ***puke***

The hypocrisy is almost too much to believe, isn’t it?

GDI, Ripley, austintx, when is the next fricken flight? I/We need to make it up there in time for Babble Service on Sunday!

On a serious note, I hope that the silent (immoral) majority will prevail. I’m pretty sure the council people have for the most part already decided.

It’s odd how people pick out a group to hate and blame all ills on. Now that it isn’t PC to do it to minorities, they’ve made a new minority. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind if they held this view and were consistent, but they’re not. Yes, the Bible states that homosexuality is wrong. But I haven’t noticed them stoning adulterers and there’s a commandment against adultery. They aren’t falling apart about people using God’s name as a swear word, since that’s a commandment, too. Wonder how many of them have been envious, covetous, or lied abut someone else or advocated killing someone via the death penalty? You don’t get to choose one of the minor rules to enforce and prove that you’re a “real” Christian.

And it was as if the more illogical, crazy, inconsistent, non-sequitur the louder they were. I heard nothing that resembled intelligent discourse.

The closest argument to resemble reasonableness was the ordinance was unnecessary because nobody is being discriminated against. So hundreds of people came out waiving, making statements, and over-cheering for hours to prevent something that would do nothing. Don’t pass this because if you do nothing will happen!

Just a remark about CA Prop 8 and AA voters — this has been pretty extensively analyzed, and while it is probably true that a higher percentage of AA voters supported the measure than did the general population, the difference was not that large. Remember that any analysis of this relies on exit polling, and the sample size of AA voters was not very large. And the percentage of AA voters in the electorate is about 10%.

Prop 8 passed because the opponents were unable to muster a sufficient turnout of white liberals.

BTW, I am a straight white liberal Californian. And I voted no, but I always vote.

@strangelet: I do not think it is your fault. I think it is the faults of fear mongering people (in the red) like we saw in Anchorage tonight that are homophobic and will never change. And yes there are homophobic people in the African American population too. I just don’t associate with them. So, it takes all of us to fight this intolerance and get civil and human rights for all.

I have very little tolerance for intolerance – isn’t that ironic! ;)

Plus, I don’t have much tolerance for the religious wingnuts, which is also ironic. ;)

I could have sworn some guy got up there and claimed America is a great country, except for the GAYS (and muslins).

I do not envy AKM having to sit in that room with so much emotion swirling around – and now this evening we have a community meeting here which will have just as much emotion.. except it is about something being built in the community that people do not want.

@califpat — What you said. There are homophobes everywhere, and I think most of them just suffer from fear of the unknown. Shortly, we should see fairly widespread progress. The world won’t end, and in another decade or so, legal equality will be commonplace and unquestioned.

Of course, just as with racial equality, it will take generations to achieve true psychological change. But legal equality is the critical first step.

That was a fascinating experience. I was so hoping to get into the main assembly room to take pictures — I had my good gear with me — but ended up in Wilda Marston with Cosmic Diva, which was just as good. :) Some of the speakers were eloquent or poignant, others were incomprehensible, many were fearful, and a few were downright hateful. I thought Sheila did a good job of following up with questions, trying to point out the inconsistencies in their arguments. I don’t know if any of them “got it” or not, but at least she tried.

Then, the last person of the day had his say. There were over 300 more names on that list, and I think they’re going to take it up again on the 16th (?).

why do the afro americans take such umbrage at the gay groups
    ____________

I asked a similar question years ago. The answer went along this line: a black man in a crowd remains a black man to anyone who looks at him. A gay man in a crowd need only hold the hand of a woman and to anyone who looks, he is heterosexual. In addition, there is a much more visceral and cultural reaction among blacks to homosexuality. But why that is was not explained.

I just gotta say this about that one woman who was apparently afraid of the lesbian wimmins. I can assure you, lady, that none of us lesbian wimmins would want anything to do with your parts. I think she’s just jealous.

And why is every red-wearer there afraid that if they protect basic civil rights, that the gay people will suddenly run amok and “turn” everyone queer? People DON’T get TURNED into gay people. If someone wants to “play gay”, then so be it. But it’s no game to me. Nobody turned me gay. I knew when I was in the third grade, for God’s sake, that I was different.

Actually, califpat, if you’re talking about Rebecca Mansour (aka RAMrocks aka R.A. Mansour), she IS pretty intelligent. She graduated with honors from a college (university?) in Detroit in 1996, and she’s had one (1) screenplay made into a movie. She’s a writer (screenwriter, too) in L.A.

Her problem is that she has no sense of humor, has a hairtrigger temper, and is possibly loonier than her idol.

I saw the pictures of Prevo’s picketers.

Didn’t look like many of them were old enough to vote. Nothing like brainwashing the young into bigotry. Catch them at an early age.

And “Mrs. Alaska” was there too. If beauty queens are now free to butt into politics with their personal views on “company time”, it’s yet another reason to do away with the institution.

Meanwhile, I wonder how they’d feel with some signs saying “No apartments for blondes”, “Blue eyes have no right to marry”, and “White men need not apply”?

Bigots are always clueless. Too bad Darwinism can’t take care of that.
