Open Thread – Reminder About Meeting Tonight!
9 06 2009For those in Anchorage, or within driving distance, please don’t forget to come to the Assembly meeting today, Tuesday, June 9 at 5pm at the Assembly Chambers in the Loussac Library. If you want to give public testimony supporting the non-discrimination ordinance, come EARLY. Jerry Prevo and his supporters will be there in force. I’m hopeful that the ordinance will pass, but I’m also hopeful that supporters of the ordinance will be there to bear witness. This is a historic moment for our city. If it passes, it will be a milestone for which we should be proud.

Thanks to Jackie (who actually braved being a guest on the Eddie Burke Shor!) and everyone at equality works, and in the blogosphere and the mainstream media who has supported this issue, and eloquently stood up for basic human rights.

You make an excellent point! I haven’t read all the comments, I’m doing a fly by – but your post caught my eye because it’s good advice no matter what the venue. The fluffy gov makes it so easy to WANT TO you know what – but I pride myself on remaining civil at least 50 percent of the time so it’s only my closest friends and hubby who hear the really awful jokes I make.
Just like the slogans and bumper stickers I designed during the pre-election time – they were funnier (or meaner) than hell and served their purpose by busting up everyone I shared them with. But… I decided to talk rationally to strangers instead about what a twit she is. And that works pretty darn well. My hubby is even better at it! He gets in some really good zingers that don’t sound partisan or biased while he chats with folks all over the country over poker or a myriad of other hobbies. Perspective and humor can save the day.

Keep up the good fight, Andree! I know it’s tough but you are making a difference in Alaska.
I too have noticed that the ADN has displayed a true lack of hard cutting journalism when it comes to Sarah’s antics (not to mention their lack of vetting her in the 2006 state election). The ADN was put in a pivotal role in September or 2008 and instead of acting like a first class, objective new source they got the deer in the headlights look and fawned over Sarah. And people call the ADN a liberal rag.

‘For those who think that Sarah’s wardrobe mishaps aren’t relevant, I recommend Regina’s current post at Palingates where she sees the poor wardrobe choices are examples of poor judgment. Many women have long memories, going back to the days when they were “honey” and “get me another coffee.” In the struggle for equality, women realized that they had to look professional, not suggestive, to be taken seriously in the workplace. A clothing resale shop in my area carries beautiful designer suits, the kind that run $150,000. on a Republican credit card. The owner explained that her best customers were women lawyers who had to look their best in court. What they wore influenced how the jury looked at them in deciding the case and how they would be treated by the judge. Most of all, if the woman wore a designer label, the other lawyer, usually male, backed off a little, wondering how successful she might be.
In today’s electronic world, stories spread like wildfire. If they can write anything about you (assuming that you want publicity), why would you want them to be writing about the cute nail polish designs on your toe nails and your open toe sandals instead of your achievements in office??

My comment that she was behaving like a “spoiled brat” during the whole “lets not let the Ds use the same process the Rs use to fill empty legislative seats” debacle got deleted and they wouldn’t let me post any more for “name calling.”
Andree, did they give you a reason for deleting your comment? I wrote the ADN editor, and after an email exchange in which he allowed that in retrospect he probably should have let it go, and I promised to behave myself better in future, I’m now back on.
What’s really ironic is that they would delete your comment, but post Letterman’s top ten list, complete with “…flight attendant” item.

mae, that’s a very good piece.
My guy has a bimbo in his office that slept her way to her position. No one respects her, including the boss she’s sleeping with. It’s likely he will soon be forced out for incompetence, and she will be out on the street looking for a job she’s qualified for. She has done herself no favors.
Smart women want their audience thinking about their message and looking at their face, not their cleavage, legs or feet, when they speak.
Smart women appreciate and show respect for women who have actually earned their place at the table with hard work and perseverance, and who, as noted, remember when women were only allowed in board rooms to bring coffee or deliver messages.
Palin knows she is not one of those women and is using every distraction tactic she can think of to keep the rest of the nation from figuring it out. I have news for her: It’s not working. She needs to go find some of those women (believe me, there are plenty of them right here at home in the Mat-Su) and beg them to be her mentors.

As a political comedian, I was thrilled that Sarah Palin was in New York over the weekend. But not as thrilled as the owners of the New York Yankees. Palin was at Yankee Stadium with Rudy Giuliani on Sunday, making them the first people to actually sit in those $2600 seats behind home plate. Not that they paid for the tickets. Palin may not like accepting federal stimulus money to help Alaskans, but she’s happy to say “you betcha!” when offered free first row Yankees tickets.

I agree with you guys, totally……..on some damaged level she knows the sexy or unprofessional thing is a good distraction strategy, it throws people off the trail, to not talk about FACTS. If she’s going to spout off she needs to back up her BS but no one requires that of her.
Where are her hard questions, they keep candy coating……NO ONE is digging for in depth proof she knows what the heck she’s talking about…….and I’m quite sure she likes it like that, thank you very much, don’t pick on me or ask hard questions cuz that “proves” to me you are not on my side, therefore the enemy. She can’t EVEN respect people seeking clarity, or more of her deep wisdom.

David Letterman contributed to the defeat of the McCain/Palin ticket. Sorry, but….he did. (Stewart, Colbert and a whole mess of others helped, also, too.)
David Letterman will not only *not* apologize….he’ll twist and and add salt. And it will be highly entertaining. I can’t wait.

McCain DID crawl back to Letterman, but the respect he once had will never be the same (and you can only play the POW card so much) …when McCain showed his true colors (including choosing palin), he lost more than just the election. palin has already reached that pivotol moment, but unlike McCain, she will NOT stay quiet and in the background, nor will she become smarter anytime soon. she’s an embarrassment to AK. jmo

The other day I was looking for who was commenting on the plagiarism stories and I got a breaking story from ‘texasforpalin’… as they were trashing Dunn.
I wondered if they were an exact copy of of the pe-ers. I just visited there because Texas is her next stop. I couldn’t help but notice….a Mr. josh painter.
He seems to post most of the stories and all the stories have ‘ Zero’ comments..?
Well OK… there were two or three with ‘ 2 comments’.
I had to ask myself… ” Is he writing them for Himself?”
Because he does seem very popular with His opinion… no one is listening.
I did find this little tidbit though… written by Mr painter.
Somebody else looks like they are trying out for John Zieglers job.
Same story… been told already. Bad reviews the first time it played though.

Weekly Standard editor working on Palin biography
Weekly Standard associate editor Matthew Continetti is writing a biography of Gov. Sarah Palin to be published by Penguin’s conservative Sentinel imprint in 2010.
Titled The Persecution of Sarah Palin, the book will be, according to WritersReps.com, “a defense of the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate who became an inspirational sensation for her party, only to be unfairly demonized by the media, the Democrats, and her own campaign.”
