Open Thread – Reminder About Meeting Tonight!

For those in Anchorage, or within driving distance, please don’t forget to come to the Assembly meeting today, Tuesday, June 9 at 5pm at the Assembly Chambers in the Loussac Library.  If you want to give public testimony supporting the non-discrimination ordinance, come EARLY.  Jerry Prevo and his supporters will be there in force.  I’m hopeful that the ordinance will pass, but I’m also hopeful that supporters of the ordinance will be there to bear witness.  This is a historic moment for our city.  If it passes, it will be a milestone for which we should be proud.

Here’s an unfortunately blurry picture of Jackie Buckley from Equality Works with the Mudflats blog mascot Brian the Moose.  Thanks to Jackie (who actually braved being a guest on the Eddie Burke Shor!) and everyone at equality works, and in the blogosphere and the mainstream media who has supported this issue, and eloquently stood up for basic human rights.

The inspection uncovered serious deviations from FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practice requirements, the agency said.

Lots of comments this morning on “Morning Joe” regarding GINO’s interview w/ Hannity and shout out from Newt yesterday.

I found it interesting that Mika kept saying that GINO needs to do some real interviews in order to basically reinvent herself.

A few thoughts on that…first, Mika pushes that “the Media” doesn’t ask alot of politicians “the tough questions”. Aren’t you part of “the Media” Mika and why aren’t you asking the tough questions? Would you ask GINO the tough questions? And good luck on getting anything close to an answer that would make sense from GINO.

Now austintx! You have the Brits all wrong. Just because something is spelt rudely it doesn’t mean that’s how we say it.

For instance there are places near me that are spelt quite differently to how they are pronounced – Cogenhoe is pronounced Cook-know, Towcester is pronounced Toaster.

Therefore on your list No 1 would be Bootle Rd, No 3 would be Co-bun St, No 5 would be Sluttle Lane -

Gah!, who am I kidding!, and who put that picture up of my Lane, No 4?

    This from WaPo:
    ad_icon

Boston: After seeing Palin again on clips from Fox, I was reminded why the nation reacted so negatively towards her in the election (besides the hardcore Republicans). Does the Republican party seriously consider her as a party leader heading into the 2010 and 2012 elections? That would seem a stretch outside any very right leaning Congressional district or state which doesn’t get the Republican party very far in 2010 or 2012.

Ben Pershing: Palin remains very popular with the activist base. The Republican party elite has mixed feelings toward her, which were in evidence during the bungled run-up to last night’s NRSC/NRCC fundraising dinner. Party leaders see Palin as a very good draw, someone who can drive excitement and raise a lot of money. But privately most Republican leaders and members of Congress don’t necessarily think she would do well as the nominee in 2012. She just brings a lot of baggage at this point.

Prevo is a fraud. He doesn’t even attempt to live up to the basic foundations and principles of the Baptist Church. The Baptist Church believes that there is no authority figure except God. That all can become church members and they are considered a community of priests, searching for their own unique relationship with and understanding of God.

Mans’ understanding of the world was incredibly different when Holy Scripture and the Bible was written. It is therefore all a matter of interpretation which is different for every person due to there unique life experiences. Prevo’s interpretation is only valid for himself and not something he should force on others.

Prevo also has an ignorant and perverse understanding of gay people. The vast majority of them are not pedophiles, cross-dressers, or transvestites. The ordinance in question does not eliminate any laws.

Prevo should lose his tax-exempt status as he violates the separation of Church and State and tries to force his warped sense of reality on everyone, even though his church members make up less than 1/3 of 1 percent of Alaska’s population.

Thought you guys might be interested in signing:

Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, has been an Air Force aviator for the past 18 years. He’s flown 400 combat hours, served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and won nine air medals.

So why did the Air Force serve him with a discharge notice last fall – two years before he’s eligible to retire?

Just one reason: Victor happens to be gay. Therefore, under the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, he’s not free to serve his country.

Keystone Progress and the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network are partnering on a campaign to help Victor keep his job – and his pension. Can you sign our petition to Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley to let Victor continue to serve?

    http://sldn.org/fehrenbach

Unfortunately, Victor is only one of the latest in a long line of service members whose careers have been threatened or ended by “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Since the law first took effect 16 years ago, nearly 13,000 service members have been discharged because of their sexual orientation.

It’s not just unfair. It’s also nonsensical. Like Victor, many of these service members have skills and training the military can’t afford to lose.

Their ranks include highly trained aviators, experts on intelligence, and linguists who speak Arabic, Urdu, and Pashto.

The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a Keystone Progress ally, is working to pressure Congress and President Obama to replace “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with a law that doesn’t discriminate. That way, all qualified Americans will be free to serve their country.

You can help by signing the petition urging Air Force secretary to reconsider Victor’s case – and the larger absurdity of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

    Sign now:

    http://sldn.org/fehrenbach

A law that leads to the discharge of highly skilled, highly decorated veterans like my brother is a law that’s not fair to our service members, not fair to our military, and not fair to our country.

If you ever wonder how Sarah got to where she is: the AK media is the first place to look consider. This is a comment that was deleted in the Anchorage Daily News this morning under their “It was Sarah Palin who stole the show” in their political blog. And the coddling continues as they delete comments like mine:

It was Sarah Palin who stole the show.
    Sounds about right.
    Collets per diem (income) for sleeping at home thereby giving herself a raise that runs counter to state mandated $125K salary for all services rendered;
    State pays for family travel;
Uses state time, staff and resources for personal and political interests although the personnel board excuses every glaring appearance of impropriety…
    Yep…the title sounds about right.

They delete this comment but publish false slanderous statements about me and my motives for:
holding Palin’s feet to the fire because they haven’t; and,
for filing ethics complaints as the law allows; and,
for going to court to sue Palin for official state emails she and Todd have hidden from public view…

If the Alaska media had done even a spackling of investigative reporting on Sarah Palin these last couple of years…McCain would have never selected her as his VP.

I too have noticed that the ADN has displayed a true lack of hard cutting journalism when it comes to Sarah’s antics (not to mention their lack of vetting her in the 2006 state election). The ADN was put in a pivotal role in September or 2008 and instead of acting like a first class, objective new source they got the deer in the headlights look and fawned over Sarah. And people call the ADN a liberal rag.

P: That’s a gooooood question, John, no one has asked me that. Yeah, there are some days that I’ve asked myself that. Others have ticked off the list of things that have been said, relishing bringing it up, “beautiful children, son is safe, we are a family doing things together — I don’t want anybody who has a love for America to sit down and shut up! I’m going to continue to speak up for national security, for energy, etc. etc.”

Z: re: HAnnity, “I told you so” re” socialism in a short period of time — maybe the messaging wasn’t all that good — media coverage? portions of Americans don’t fear socialism?

P: Let’s hope Americans don’t become comfortable with those ideas, because our country will crumble under socialism. Our children must learn the value of working hard, we are the greatest country on earth, we must be proud of our country.

Z: Chime in on Sonya Sotomayor? Can you name any other candidates you’d name if you had the responsibility?

P: Gender, race should not be any kind of test to pass. Wants the best == in Alaska she doesn’t look through a gender-race agenda. I’m sure there are many qualified candidates considered….I don’t know.

Z: What’s it like to fly commercial.

P: Will be picking up Piper and Trig on last leg of the trip.

Z: When are we going to see you in L.A.?

P: Never been to Disneyland… (never answered the L.A. question)

‘For those who think that Sarah’s wardrobe mishaps aren’t relevant, I recommend Regina’s current post at Palingates where she sees the poor wardrobe choices are examples of poor judgment. Many women have long memories, going back to the days when they were “honey” and “get me another coffee.” In the struggle for equality, women realized that they had to look professional, not suggestive, to be taken seriously in the workplace. A clothing resale shop in my area carries beautiful designer suits, the kind that run $150,000. on a Republican credit card. The owner explained that her best customers were women lawyers who had to look their best in court. What they wore influenced how the jury looked at them in deciding the case and how they would be treated by the judge. Most of all, if the woman wore a designer label, the other lawyer, usually male, backed off a little, wondering how successful she might be.

In today’s electronic world, stories spread like wildfire. If they can write anything about you (assuming that you want publicity), why would you want them to be writing about the cute nail polish designs on your toe nails and your open toe sandals instead of your achievements in office??

Andree, did they give you a reason for deleting your comment? I wrote the ADN editor, and after an email exchange in which he allowed that in retrospect he probably should have let it go, and I promised to behave myself better in future, I’m now back on.

What’s really ironic is that they would delete your comment, but post Letterman’s top ten list, complete with “…flight attendant” item.

I liked this item they posted:

In related news, Paris Hilton continues to rake in the cash as well. Which is probably appropriate, as her energy policies have resulted in as much natural gas flowing through a pipeline as have the policies of Palin: a big fat zero gallons so far.

Paris did it without handing away 500 million of Alaska’s money to a Canadian company in an attempt to preserve the illusion of something viable being done.

Paris and Palin: the illusion of something good without any substance at all or any accomplishments to their names. Both just interested in themselves and nothing else.

It must be one of those “state secrets” Palin and Stapleton are not talking about. Maybe some crazed right-winger tinfoil-hat wearer was taking a swipe at a protester at a Palin rally or at one of those events Palin attends, and he got the Guv on the backswing….

mae, that’s a very good piece.

My guy has a bimbo in his office that slept her way to her position. No one respects her, including the boss she’s sleeping with. It’s likely he will soon be forced out for incompetence, and she will be out on the street looking for a job she’s qualified for. She has done herself no favors.

Smart women want their audience thinking about their message and looking at their face, not their cleavage, legs or feet, when they speak.

Smart women appreciate and show respect for women who have actually earned their place at the table with hard work and perseverance, and who, as noted, remember when women were only allowed in board rooms to bring coffee or deliver messages.

Palin knows she is not one of those women and is using every distraction tactic she can think of to keep the rest of the nation from figuring it out. I have news for her: It’s not working. She needs to go find some of those women (believe me, there are plenty of them right here at home in the Mat-Su) and beg them to be her mentors.

    A fun read:

As a political comedian, I was thrilled that Sarah Palin was in New York over the weekend. But not as thrilled as the owners of the New York Yankees. Palin was at Yankee Stadium with Rudy Giuliani on Sunday, making them the first people to actually sit in those $2600 seats behind home plate. Not that they paid for the tickets. Palin may not like accepting federal stimulus money to help Alaskans, but she’s happy to say “you betcha!” when offered free first row Yankees tickets.

I agree with you guys, totally……..on some damaged level she knows the sexy or unprofessional thing is a good distraction strategy, it throws people off the trail, to not talk about FACTS. If she’s going to spout off she needs to back up her BS but no one requires that of her.

Where are her hard questions, they keep candy coating……NO ONE is digging for in depth proof she knows what the heck she’s talking about…….and I’m quite sure she likes it like that, thank you very much, don’t pick on me or ask hard questions cuz that “proves” to me you are not on my side, therefore the enemy. She can’t EVEN respect people seeking clarity, or more of her deep wisdom.

He seems to post most of the stories and all the stories have ‘ Zero’ comments..?
Well OK… there were two or three with ‘ 2 comments’.
I had to ask myself… ” Is he writing them for Himself?”
Because he does seem very popular with His opinion… no one is listening.

Weekly Standard editor working on Palin biography
Weekly Standard associate editor Matthew Continetti is writing a biography of Gov. Sarah Palin to be published by Penguin’s conservative Sentinel imprint in 2010.

Titled The Persecution of Sarah Palin, the book will be, according to WritersReps.com, “a defense of the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate who became an inspirational sensation for her party, only to be unfairly demonized by the media, the Democrats, and her own campaign.”
